How many of you have used an electronic spreadsheet,

like Microsoft Excel?

Very good.

Now, how many of you have run a business with a spreadsheet by hand,

like my dad did for his small printing business in Philadelphia?

A lot less.

Well, that's the way it was done for hundreds of years.

In early 1978, I started working on an idea

that eventually became VisiCalc.

And the next year it shipped

running on something new called an Apple II personal computer.

You could tell that things had really changed when, six years later,

the Wall Street Journal ran an editorial

that assumed you knew what VisiCalc was and maybe even were using it.

Steve Jobs back in 1990

said that "spreadsheets propelled the industry forward."

"VisiCalc propelled the success of Apple more than any other single event."

On a more personal note,

Steve said, "If VisiCalc had been written for some other computer,

you'd be interviewing somebody else right now."

So, VisiCalc was instrumental in getting personal computers on business desks.

How did it come about?

What was it? What did I go through to make it be what it was?

Well, I first learned to program back in 1966, when I was 15 --

just a couple months after this photo was taken.

Few high schoolers had access to computers in those days.

But through luck and an awful lot of perseverance,

I was able to get computer time around the city.

After sleeping in the mud at Woodstock, I went off to MIT to go to college,

where to make money, I worked on the Multics Project.

Multics was a trailblazing interactive time-sharing system.

Have you heard of the Linux and Unix operating systems?

They came from Multics.

I worked on the Multics versions

of what are known as interpreted computer languages,

that are used by people in noncomputer fields

to do their calculations while seated at a computer terminal.

After I graduated from MIT,

I went to work for Digital Equipment Corporation.

At DEC, I worked on software

for the new area of computerized typesetting.

I helped newspapers replace their reporters' typewriters

with computer terminals.

I'd write software

and then I'd go out in the field to places like the Kansas City Star,

where I would train users and get feedback.

This was real-world experience

that is quite different than what I saw in the lab at MIT.

After that, I was project leader

of the software for DEC's first word processor, again a new field.

Like with typesetting, the important thing was crafting a user interface

that was both natural and efficient for noncomputer people to use.

After I was at DEC, I went to work for a small company

that made microprocessor-based electronic cash registers for the fast-food industry.

But I had always wanted to start a company with my friend Bob Frankston

that I met on the Multics project at MIT.

So I decided to go back to school to learn as much as I could about business.

And in the fall of 1977,

I entered the MBA program at Harvard Business School.

I was one of the few percentage of students

who had a background in computer programming.

There's a picture of me from the yearbook sitting in the front row.

(Laughter)

Now, at Harvard, we learned by the case method.

We'd do about three cases a day.

Cases consist of up to a few dozen pages describing particular business situations.

They often have exhibits, and exhibits often have words and numbers

laid out in ways that make sense for the particular situation.

They're usually all somewhat different.

Here's my homework.

Again, numbers, words, laid out in ways that made sense.

Lots of calculations -- we got really close to our calculators.

In fact, here's my calculator.

For Halloween, I went dressed up as a calculator.

(Laughter)

At the beginning of each class, the professor would call on somebody

to present the case.

What they would do is they would explain what was going on

and then dictate information that the professor would transcribe

onto the many motorized blackboards in the front of the class,

and then we'd have a discussion.

One of the really frustrating things is when you've done all your homework,

you come in the next day only to find out that you made an error

and all of the other numbers you did were wrong.

And you couldn't participate as well.

And we were marked by class participation.

So, sitting there with 87 other people in the class, I got to daydream a lot.

Most programmers in those days worked on mainframes,

building things like inventory systems, payroll systems and bill-paying systems.

But I had worked on interactive word processing

and on-demand personal computation.

Instead of thinking about paper printouts and punch cards,

I imagined a magic blackboard

that if you erased one number and wrote a new thing in,

all of the other numbers would automatically change,

like word processing with numbers.

I imagined that my calculator had mouse hardware on the bottom of it

and a head-up display, like in a fighter plane.

And I could type some numbers in, and circle it, and press the sum button.

And right in the middle of a negotiation I'd be able to get the answer.

Now I just had to take my fantasy and turn it into reality.

My father taught me about prototyping.

He showed me mock-ups

that he'd make to figure out the placement on the page

for the things for brochures that he was printing.

And he'd use it to get feedback from customers

and OKs before he sent the job off to the presses.

The act of making a simple, working version of what you're trying to build

forces you to uncover key problems.

And it lets you find solutions to those problems much less expensively.

So I decided to build a prototype.

I went to a video terminal connected to Harvard's time-sharing system

and got to work.

One of the first problems that I ran into was:

How do you represent values in formulas?

Let me show you what I mean.

I thought that you would point somewhere,

type in some words, then type in some somewhere else,

put in some numbers and some more numbers, point where you want the answer.

And then point to the first, press minus, point to the second,

and get the result.

The problem was: What should I put in the formula?

It had to be something the computer knew what to put in.

And if you looked at the formula,

you needed to know where on the screen it referred to.

The first thing I thought was the programmer way of doing it.

The first time you pointed to somewhere,

the computer would ask you to type in a unique name.

It became pretty clear pretty fast that that was going to be too tedious.

The computer had to automatically make up the name and put it inside.

So I thought, why not make it be the order in which you create them?

I tried that. Value 1, value 2.

Pretty quickly I saw that if you had more than a few values

you'd never remember on the screen where things were.

Then I said, why not instead of allowing you to put values anywhere,

I'll restrict you to a grid?

Then when you pointed to a cell,

the computer could put the row and column in as a name.

And, if I did it like a map and put ABC across the top and numbers along the side,

if you saw B7 in a formula,

you'd know exactly where it was on the screen.

And if you had to type the formula in yourself, you'd know what to do.

Restricting you to a grid helped solve my problem.

It also opened up new capabilities, like the ability to have ranges of cells.

But it wasn't too restrictive --

you could still put any value, any formula, in any cell.

And that's the way we do it to this day, almost 40 years later.

My friend Bob and I decided that we were going to build this product together.

I did more work figuring out exactly how the program was supposed to behave.

I wrote a reference card to act as documentation.

It also helped me ensure that the user interface I was defining

could be explained concisely and clearly to regular people.

Bob worked in the attic of the apartment he rented in Arlington, Massachusetts.

This is the inside of the attic.

Bob bought time on the MIT Multics System

to write computer code on a terminal like this.

And then he would download test versions to a borrowed Apple II

over a phone line using an acoustic coupler,

and then we would test.

For one of these tests I prepared for this case about the Pepsi Challenge.

Print wasn't working yet, so I had to copy everything down.

Save wasn't working, so every time it crashed,

I had to type in all of the formulas again, over and over again.

The next day in class, I raised my hand; I got called on, and I presented the case.

I did five-year projections. I did all sorts of different scenarios.

I aced the case. VisiCalc was already useful.

The professor said, "How did you do it?"

Well, I didn't want to tell him about our secret program.

(Laughter)

So I said, "I took this and added this

and multiplied by this and subtracted that."

He said, "Well, why didn't you use a ratio?"

I said, "Hah! A ratio -- that wouldn't have been as exact!"

What I didn't say was, "Divide isn't working yet."

(Laughter)

Eventually, though, we did finish enough of VisiCalc

to be able to show it to the public.

My dad printed up a sample reference card

that we could use as marketing material.

In June of 1979, our publisher announced VisiCalc to the world,

in a small booth at the giant National Computer Conference in New York City.

The New York Times had a humorous article about the conference.

"The machines perform what seem religious rites ...

Even as the believers gather,

the painters in the Coliseum sign room are adding to the pantheon,

carefully lettering 'VISICALC' in giant black on yellow.

All hail VISICALC!"

(Gasp) New York Times: "All hail VISICALC."

That was the last mention of the electronic spreadsheet

in the popular business press for about two years.

Most people didn't get it yet.

But some did.

In October of 1979, we shipped VisiCalc.

It came in packaging that looked like this.

And it looked like this running on the Apple II.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Now, there's an awful lot more to this story,

but that'll have to wait for another day.

One thing, though, Harvard remembers.

Here's that classroom.

They put up a plaque to commemorate what happened there.

How To: Update Firmware for Stride SE Series Managed Switch - Duration: 2:54.

To update the firmware in a Stride SE Series Managed switch.

First, you will need to download the firmware file from our website.

When you are at our site, find the blue bar at the top of the page and hover over Downloads,

now select Firmware.

At the top of this page select Download Firmware Binaries.

You will find the Stride Managed switches under "Other hardware".

Select Download Now and store this file to your local PC.

This download will be in a zip file form.

The switch update utility will require this file to be extracted before installing.

Note that this file is a FWB file.

Now that we have the file we must gain access to the switch.

Here I am connecting to the switch over Ethernet by typing the IP address of the switch into

my web browser.

You will now be asked to enter the User name and password for the switch.

From the navigation pane on the left, expand the Managed switch Menu and then the Advanced

operations.

Here you will see the Update firmware option, select it.

Now if you read this note you will see that this page is for a tgz file.

We downloaded a fwb file, so you will need to need to select this option to install this

file.

Select this choose file button.

Now navigate to the file we downloaded and extracted earlier, select it and click on

open.

Now you will see your file name here.

Select Install from file.

Now you will now see the install from file button grey out and the upload progress will

be seen here.

Now you will see a message requiring a reboot of the switch.

This can be done by resetting power to the switch and waiting for the Status LED to stop

flashing.

Once the switch has rebooted, reconnect through the web browser.

Now we must select to run the new firmware.

Select Setup, then Main settings, now Manage firmware.

Now select the file we just loaded.

And now select Commit Changes.

It will now load the firmware, which will then require the switch to be rebooted.

Once the status LED stops flashing, reconnect through the web browser and verify the firmware

# is correct.

NASA Referees Test of Footballs vs. Webb Telescope - Duration: 4:37.

Here at the Goddard Space Flight

Center in Greenbelt Maryland, we are building the most advanced

and largest space telescope ever constructed

the James Webb Space Telescope. With the big game right around the

corner, we thought it'd be pretty cool to use a football to demonstrate

some of the testing we do here at Goddard to make sure that Webb is ready for

its mission. Launch is the most intense part

of any spacecraft's mission and we need to make sure Webb can survive

its ride on the very powerful Ariane V rocket.

Ben Lovera, 2016 Maryland High School Field

Goal leader will help us demonstrate.

Ben's kick imparts a force on the football

of slightly more than four Gs.

One G is the force you feel standing on Earth.

During launch, Webb telescope components can experience

forces up to 19 Gs or 19

times their weight. Imagine your legs holding up 19 times your

body weight - for humans, that's physically impossible.

Webb's composite structure and components

are built and tested to handle that. We put the Telescope, and

all of its components, through a series of tests to prove

that it can withstand the riggers of launch. These tests include:

vibration tests

centrifuge tests

and acoustic tests. We use this giant acoustic chamber

and its very powerful sound system to mimic the sound pressure and

frequencies we see on the Ariane V rocket during launch.

Sound pressure waves can cause vibrations

which may be very damaging. We test in this chamber

to make sure the rocket noise won't break anything.

We test every material used to build Webb

to make sure it can withstand the stresses of launch and properly function

in space.

Webb's instruments are designed to detect infrared

light from the farthest objects in the Universe. Our eyes can't detect infrared

light, but we can feel it as heat. Here's the heat where my hand

warmed up this football and left a heat print on it.

To perform its mission, Webb's instruments need to be

extremely cold - very near absolute zero

or minus 459 degrees Fahrenheit.

We don't want their own heat influencing the images so we test

everything cryogenically in large test chambers.

And make sure everything works as it should in the freezing environment of space.

Materials can change dramatically

at these cryogenic temperatures. Not always how you'd expect.

Let's see what happens to this football in Liquid Nitrogen, which is still

about 70 to 100 degree warmer than some of Webb's instruments.

The ball's inner rubber bladder shattered

at this temperature but, wow, the outer shell holds

together! Webb's instruments on the other hand are built to

withstand such extreme temperatures. Not the sledgehammer

by the way! Test, test and test

again is the key. We'd rather have something break during

a test on the ground where we can understand the problem and fix it, than

in space. Soon the telescope will be heading to Johnson Space Center

in Houston, Texas for some more testing before it heads to

to Northrop Grumman in California to be assembled and packed into a rocket.

The telescope will be launched from French Guiana in 2018.

This football may not be space worthy, but

it sure works well here on Earth! Check out

Wrangler Barricade Trailforce HD Front Bumper w/ LED Lights & Winch (2007-2017 JK) Review & Install - Duration: 8:26.

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation of the Barricade

Trailforce HD Front Bumper with LED Lights and Winch Combination, fitting all 2007 and

up JKs.

Today, we're gonna talk through the installation of this kit, which is going to be a fairly

simple one out of three wrenches.

Even though there are lights on this bumper and you have the winch, you're really only

making a couple of connections at your battery.

So again, one out of three wrenches for this install, but do give yourself around two hours

to get it done, maybe even a little bit more.

We'll talk more about the install in just a second.

We're also gonna talk through the construction and a few of the features of this kit.

This combination includes, of course, both your bumper and your winch.

You know that these two pieces are going to work together, you're gonna save a little

bit of money by buying them at the same time, and you're going to end up with a package

that is both very useful and will also drastically transform the look of the front of your Jeep.

Now, this kit is available with a couple of different bumpers, and this one, in particular,

has the LED lights built into it.

These lights are a little bit more of a marker light than they are an auxiliary light that's

actually gonna throw a lot of light in front of you on the road or on the trail.

But if you're looking for that, if you like that look of an integrated, built-in flush

mount light, and you want a winch that's gonna be very functional as well, all while saving

a little bit of money, buying them together in this combo pack is a really good option.

So obviously, there are two separate pieces here, and first we'll talk about the bumper.

This is the Barricade Trailforce HD Front Bumper with integrated LED lights.

This is going to be 5/32nds-inch steel covered in a textured black powder coat finish.

It does, of course, have the winch mount right up on top and your fair lead mount as well.

It has two D-ring mounts that are welded and bolt directly into your frame horns, giving

you a really solid connection for either a snatch strap recovery or using a snatch block

with your winch in order to double the pulling power of the winch.

And this does also come with the 3/4-inch D-rings as well, so it's not a piece that

you have to purchase separately, which is really nice, something you don't have to think

about.

This, of course, has a 2-inch hoop up on top of the bumper, which is going to offer a little

bit of protection to your winch from branches and brush.

And it also two light mount tabs up on the top, allowing you to mount any traditional

single post light.

Whether you're looking to mount some additional auxiliary lights or even a light bar up here,

you do have a couple of different options.

Now, this is a mid-width bumper from Barricade, so it is going to be slightly shorter than

that factory front bumper.

But even if you have a factory fender flare on your Jeep, I still think that this is going

to look pretty good.

Sometimes, when you go with a stubby bumper, you really want an aggressive fender flare

that jets in to give you a nice, clean look from the front.

With this, you can get away with running a bunch of different styles of fender flare

because it is a mid-width bumper, so you are going to get some protection and you're gonna

get those additional features that we just talked about.

Of course, this is the kit that comes with the winch as well, and this is Barricade's

9,500-Pound Winch with Synthetic Line.

Now, the general rule of thumb for the pulling capacity of a winch is that you want it to

be roughly double the loaded trail weight of your vehicle.

So if you have a really heavy, armored-up 4-door JK that you plan on burying up to the

axles in mud, maybe you wanna consider the 12,000-pound winch.

However, if you have a little bit of a lighter 4-door or certainly a light 2-door rig, 9,500

pounds is going to be more than enough for you.

Now, this is gonna be a 5.5 horsepower motor.

This does have a three-stage planetary gear set, so it is going to give you a good bit

of pulling power.

Now, in general, I really like a synthetic line.

It's going to be more expensive up front, you're going to have to replace it and maintain

it more often, and it is going to be more expensive every time you purchase a new one.

However, the benefit to a synthetic line is that it's lighter-weight, it's not going to

kink, it's easier to drag up those muddy hills, and it doesn't store energy like a steel cable

will.

This is going to stretch just like steel will, but when steel is under load and it breaks,

it snaps back.

It can hit somebody, causing an injury, or just some damage to your Jeep.

With the synthetic line, again, it doesn't store that energy, so if it were to break,

it falls directly to the ground fairly harmlessly.

You can mount your solenoid box right up on top here, or you could, of course, mount it

in back if you chose to.

Now, there are winches on the market that have some additional features, that if you're

gonna be doing some really long, hard pulls every single weekend, I might recommend spending

a little bit more on one of those other winches.

However, if you're going to be using this occasionally, this is going to be a really

nice winch that's gonna save you some money over those other options that are available.

This install is going to a one-out-of-three-wrench install that will probably take you right

around two hours, and the first step in getting this installed is going to be removing your

factory front bumper.

You'll do that by removing the splash shield on the bottom and the frame cover on the top,

removing the fog light sockets and the fog light wiring harness, and finally unbolting

that bumper and removing it from the Jeep.

Now, at this point, I would recommend installing the wiring harness for the lights on your

new bumper.

These are not going to plug directly into where your factory fog lights do, but this

does come with a really nice harness.

That includes the switch, the relay, the fuse and will plug directly into these lights,

so all you have to do is pick up power at the battery.

So you're gonna have to pull the switch wire through the firewall, get the switch mounted

inside the cab.

You're gonna run the two power wires, positive and negative, up to the battery where you'll

pick up power there.

And then you'll run the actual connection ends down to the front of the frame where

the bumper is going to be.

Once you get that into place, I would recommend bolting your winch up.

First, you're going to bolt the solenoid box on top of the winch if that's where you choose

to mount it, attach your wires from the box to the winch itself, so all you're going to

have are those two long leads that go to the battery, and finally bolt your winch onto

the bumper.

For that, you're gonna get your fair lead in place.

So once you have the winch bolted up to the bumper, you're gonna have a big, heavy package.

Why not install the bumper first and then the winch?

Well, it can be a little bit difficult to get to those winch mounting bolts if you do

it that way.

So again, I recommend the winch gets mounted to the bumper and the bumper and winch as

a package get mounted onto the Jeep.

Once you do have everything bolted up, you simply lift the bumper and winch onto the

frame rails and use the included hardware to get it bolted down tight.

Because you've already run all of the wiring for your lights, you simply plug those lights

in.

You'll want to stretch the two positive and negative wires from your winch through your

grille, up along the fender, and attach those to the battery as well as attaching the two

leads that you ran for your wiring harness to the battery as well.

And that's why I'm still giving this a one out of three wrenches.

Even though you do have the lights and the winch to wire up, it's really just four wires,

two that get attached to the positive terminal of your battery, two that get attached to

the negative terminal of your battery.

So even if you're not someone who's comfortable with automotive wiring, that's something that

really anybody can do.

As far as the tools necessary to get this installed, really just your traditional hand

tools.

No wiring tools or anything like that are necessary.

This is gonna be a pretty straightforward and a pretty easy install for anyone to do

in their driveway.

Overall, I think that this bumper and winch combination is fairly priced.

Of course, you're going to save some money over purchasing the winch and the bumper separately,

and if you're looking for the features that are offered in this kit, I do think this is

gonna be a really nice option for those of you who are going to be occasionally using

your winch.

This is gonna save you some money over those top-tier winches that are much more expensive

that has additional features, and of course, you're going to have the bumper for its features

and its protection.

Overall, these are gonna work really well together, they're gonna drastically change

the look of your Jeep, and I think that they're gonna be a pretty nice option for the price.

So if you're looking for a front bumper and winch combination for your Jeep to offer some

more function and drastically change the look of the front of your Jeep, I think this is

going to be a fairly-priced option.
