Youtube daily Feb 10 2017

The popular retail store Nordstrom's announced earlier this week they were going to be pulling

Ivanka Trump's merchandise from their shelves, saying that it, "Simply is not selling.

We want to make way for things people actually want to buy."

Obviously anytime you go after a Trump or say something negative or do something that

adversely impacts a Trump, Donald's going to get on Twitter and he's going to go after

you, which is exactly what he did to Nordstrom's.

Saying that, "They're being so mean to my daughter.

You got to stop this.

This isn't fair.

I thought we had a free society."

We do.

This is the free market speaking Republicans, because I've seen a lot of Republicans be

super pissed saying, "We're not going to shop at Nordstrom's anymore."

Okay, but you're the ones who say that we need to have a free market that makes all

the decisions.

You're perfectly fine with laws being passed at the state level saying that if you own

a shop and you don't want to serve gay people you don't have to, but suddenly you go against

one white woman and it's the end of the world because her stuff isn't selling because the

majority of the public hates her because her family is such a racist, bigoted, xenophobic,

horrendous mess?

That's what you have a problem with?

The story goes even deeper than that.

It's not just about Ivanka's stuff.

It's not about Donald Trump's tweets.

What really makes this story a story is the fact that after this was announced, Kellyanne

Conway goes on Fox News where she tells us, "Please go buy Ivanka's stuff.

Go buy Ivanka's stuff."

Kellyanne Conway spoke those four words.

"Go buy Ivanka's stuff."

Seems innocuous enough, but it's actually not.

Since Ivanka Trump is the daughter of the sitting president, since she has a direct

line to him and vise versa, and since Kellyanne Conway is paid as someone to go out and speak

on behalf of the President, essentially an ambassador for the President, she just advocated

buy stuff from Ivanka, which that money also goes back to the President, too, which creates

massive unethical conflict of interest that is more than likely completely illegal.

Kellyanne Conway very likely broke the law by telling people, "Go buy Ivanka's stuff."

Now, she is the target of several ethics complaints, not just from Democrats or democratic organizations,

Representative Jason Chaffetz have referred the case to the House Ethics Committee in

order for them to look into this, see if she broke the law, and if she did she's got to

go.

Kellyanne Conway has been in her position at the White House for three weeks now.

Three weeks she's had this official job.

It only took her three weeks to break the law.

This is exactly what everybody expected was going to happen.

We knew that Donald Trump was going to have some kind of conflict of interest with his

businesses, we knew that he couldn't keep out of it, and boom, it's already claiming

it's first victim of Kellyanne Conway.

It's going to take a bit.

We're going to see where this story goes.

Obviously, the greatest thing to happen would be to get her out of there because she is

a cancer in this administration, a cancer on the American society, but she's also been

the source of a lot of laughs.

At one part she needs to go because she's horrible, but on the other, kind of gonna

miss making fun of her sometimes.

The bottom line is that you cannot, as an ambassador to the White House, as an ambassador

for the President of the United States, you can't go tell people what to buy from where

and from whom.

That crosses a line that I thought Republicans were all in favor of keeping.

"Government, stay out of the issue of business."

Now we have a literal sitting Republican administration advocating you to buy one brand over another.

That's government overreach if I've ever seen it.

That's government interfering with the free market if we've ever seen it.

The moral of the story, to all media outlets out there, stop putting Kellyanne Conway on

the air.

When she's not making up phony massacres she's using the airtime as some kind of fake infomercial

pitch for a brand that American's don't even want to buy.

I'm sure you can probably find somebody much more interesting, much more intelligent to

talk to than Kellyanne Conway.

Here Are Complex's 2017 Grammy Predictions - Duration: 3:57.

What's up, guys?

For Complex News, I'm TK.

It's Grammy season again.

The time where everyone pretends not to care but secretly hopes that their fave takes home

a golden phonograph.

This year's slate is a doozy, with Adele and Beyoncé facing off for the major awards.

Chance the Rapper is ready to capitalize after changing the game in the streaming era.

Complex Music editors Ross Scarano and Brendan Klinkenberg took a look at the nominees and

came up with who's most likely to win, who would be winning in a better world, and the

dark horses to look out for.

Here are their 2017 Grammy predictions.

First up, Album of the Year.

It's no fun to admit, but Adele is going to win this, for her album 25.

See, regardless of the their genre of expertise, every member of the Recording Academy has

the opportunity to vote for four awards: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the

Year, and Best New Artist.

These are the categories, the thinking goes, dominated by the most popular of music.

In 2017, no one is more popular than Adele in terms of real sales.

In less than a calendar year, 25 was certified diamond.

Grammy voters skew older and when all else fails, history shows us that they will vote

for the popular, recognizable choice.

That's Adele.

Even though Beyonce should win this for Lemonade.

It's clearly the more impressive artistic achievement.

And then there's the dark horse, country singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson and his

album A Sailor's Guide to Earth.

In 2001, George W. Bush had just been inaugurated and Steely Dan won album of the year out of

the blue.

Keep your eyes on the white guys making guitar music.

Next is Record of the Year.

Here's where you'll start to notice the pattern.

It's not right, but Adele's got this for her Grammy-bait single, "Hello."

It's a sincere love ballad delivered by the strongest voice in contemporary pop.

But in terms of a sonic achievement with something powerful to say, Beyonce recorded hands down

the best song of the year with "Formation."

If all was right in the world, this would win Record of the Year.

And then the dark horse is Lukas Graham's "7 Years."

The Grammys love a slick storytelling song.

Speaking of songwriting, Song of the Year is award that focuses on just that, but, here,

the story remains the same: Adele is likely to sweep the hell out of the Grammys this

year.

"Hello" gets the trophy here.

And yes, as good as "Formation" is, Justin Bieber and company wrote a song that plays

by the rules of songwriting, and is filled with clever observational turns of phrase.

"My momma don't like you, and she likes everyone" was the most cutting line on pop radio last

year.

And then the Dark Horse is Mike Posner, and his song "I Took a Pill in Ibiza."

This is basically a Billy Joel song for the millenial set; it's corny as hell, but a case

could be made by a lot of Grammy voters that this is the song to take it.

Here's another prediction from Complex Music crew: Chance The Rapper is going to bring

home Best New Artist at the Grammys this year.

He just put out his best and biggest album to date, was performing on TV seemingly every

single week, and even threw his own festival—this is the rare situation where the person we

think should win has a pretty good shot.

Not to mention that he seemingly had a role in the Grammys letting online-only releases

into the running, not that the Grammys themselves will ever admit that.

Of course, there's always a chance for an upset, and there's a case to be made for

The Chainsmokers this year.

They're pretty insufferable, but they had a nearly unmatched year on the charts, and

"Closer" was at number one for an awfully long time for a new act.

Look out for them to rain on Chance's parade.

Next is Best Rap Song.

If we're being honest, the right choice here would definitely be "Ultralight Beam."

But, that's not how the Grammys work.

Drake is poised to sweep the rap categories this year, after his 2016 saw him dominate

the charts and reach new heights of popularity thanks to "One Dance" and, yes "Hotline

Bling."

His ode to late night phone calls was released back in 2015, but thanks to its sly addition

as a bonus track on Views, it's eligible for the award here.

Expect the song to win Drake two awards on Sunday: this, and best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

And, finally, we have Best Rap Album.

Again, Drake is the pick here.

Views was a monster success, and for specific genres, that's usually what wins you the

golden gramophone at the end of the night.

Drake had the biggest album in rap last year without any real competition: sometimes that

means it's the best.

If anyone can beat him, though, it'll be Chance The Rapper.

Chano put together the best album in hip-hop last year with Coloring Book, and he's coming

into the Grammys on a real hot streak.

It's possible he could knock the top dog off his spot, but it's unlikely.

So, there you have it, the 2017 Grammy winners according to Complex Music.

Tune in on Sunday night to find out if they got it right.

That's the news for now, but for more Grammy updates, subscribe to Complex on YouTube today.

- So, we got this wonderful character here.

- So, she is a vampire. - Mm-hmm.

- A lot of the bat wings

and a lot of, like, webs are really important.

Pink is her signature color.

- Okay. Okay. - Super-girly.

Like, frilly and lace. - Oh, you're gonna--

you're gonna do well. - I'm super excited.

- That's her. - Yeah.

Good luck. - Thank you.

- Thank you. - Thank you.

- Lagoona Blue. "My biggest pet peeve

"is anyone who treats the ocean

"like his or her own personal trash can.

Everyone's my best friend." - Aww.

She's a sweetheart. - She is.

I know nothing about "Monster High."

- Nor do I. - Yeah.

This is gonna be a tough one.

- We should definitely have,

like, gills on the side of the neck.

- I think so. - Hello.

I'm Becca. - Hi. Cig.

- Hi, Becca. - Nice to meet you.

- Nice to meet you. I'm George. - Nice to meet you.

- Nice to meet you. We were thinking keep

with the pretty face but sort of accentuate

the cheek bones,

do some scaling on the forehead,

and incorporate fin ears.

- That'd be pretty, yes.

And if you want to play this up, in the past

we added webbing detail in between her fingers.

- Yeah, we've got that. That's--that's something.

- I think it'll be great.

All right. Well, good luck to you guys.

both: Thank you. - Bye.

[upbeat music]

- What did you guys get?

both: We got Cleo de Nile.

- Daughter of the mummy. - Oh, fun.

- I am so excited for this challenge.

- I have to admit that I think

Keaghlan's probably more excited than I am,

and I'm very excited.

- "Cleo de Nile is the personification

"of a teenage girl with a pedigree.

"Her superiority is a birthright

"and preferential treatment is expected.

Just ask all 10,000 of her servants."

- I feel like Cleo's one of the harder dolls

to adapt because she is so human in her design.

- Really would love to incorporate kind of that,

you know, wrapped mummy texture.

She has bandages on one arm and on one leg,

so we want to do a character

that has them and make her a little more monster

than just, you know, a human wrapped up in bandages.

- Hi, ladies. both: Hi.

- Nice to meet you. I'm Becca. - Good to meet you, too.

- Keaghlan. Nice to meet you. - Hi.

- You got Cleo. - Yeah.

- I'm so excited. She's one of my favorites.

- Oh, she's your favorite? - Yeah.

- Awesome. - Okay, give us all the tips.

- All right.

So, if you notice where the wrappings are,

there's a little bit of gold shimmer.

- Mm-hmm. - Oh, cool.

- Do you think that Cleo would have Egyptian,

like, hieroglyphs or anything, like, on the wraps?

Like, we can incorporate that as a detail?

- Yes. - Okay, cool.

- It is a wrapping, but

we wanted to add that monstery detail,

so we did embed it into her skin a little bit.

- Just to say, we're both really huge Monster High fans.

- We're really, really big fans. - Yay. Thank you for being fans.

- So excited. - Okay. Good luck.

- Thank you so much for having us.

Could The Psychedelic Drug Ayahuasca Cure Depression? - Duration: 3:06.

Ayahuasca is hard to spell.

A-y-a-h... uasca?

Maybe I should go grab some, that might be easier.

Hey all, Trace here for DNews.

In 2015, the United States got its first legal ayahuasca church that promised to provide

"ayahuasca spiritual healings" to members...at a price.

It was quickly shut down a year later, with skeptics calling the church a cult and a scam.

But… is there an actual benefit to using ayahuasca, and what is it in the first place?

Ayahuasca is commonly used by indigenous communities in healing ceremonies in the Amazon rainforest.

It's a tea that produces hallucinatory effects after consumed.

But many consider it a miracle drug, treating a number of disorders, including depression.

But is this scientifically accurate or are we just drinking up some ancient placebo kool-aid?

Ayahuasca is traditionally made from the leaves of one shrub (Psychotria viridis) and the

stems of another vine (Diplopterys cabrerana).

When digested together, they introduce a fairly famous compound called DMT into the blood,

which eventually finds its way to the brain and causes hallucinations.

But DMT has a not so famous partner, harmine, which in addition to hallucinations, has antidepressant

qualities.

Harmine was first found in ayahuasca in 1996 in the plasma of volunteers who drank it.

According to botanist Dennis McKenna, "Most people seek ayahuasca with good intentions

- they are not thrill-seeking but are curious, serious - or have specific issues such as

depression."

There have been studies to back up ayahuasca as a treatment for depression.

Most recently, one study published in PeerJ exposed human neural progenitors — cells

that are capable of becoming neurons — to harmine, resulting in a 71.5% increase in

human neural cells.

This is similar to other antidepressants, which cause, what's called, neurogenesis.

But this isn't the first study of its kind.

There have been several studies done on ayahuasca usually with small a sample size...like really

small.

But because there aren't that many in the overall scientific literature, we thought

they were worth mentioning.

One study with 6 volunteers found improvements with their mood after drinking ayahuasca within

hours (typical antidepressants could take weeks).

Another study had 3 women with depression drink ayahuasca, and their symptoms decreased

for two weeks afterward!

And in a 2015 PLoS One study, they linked the ayahuasca's "altered state of consciousness"

to decreased activity in parts of the brain associated with depression.

There's even a meta-analysis of various studies on ayahuasca and its antidepressive

effects from the past 25 years.

They concluded that ayahuasca is a "useful pharmacological tools for the treatment of...mood

disorders."

It's actually pretty difficult to conduct studies on ayahuasca...considering DMT is

classified as a Schedule I substance by the US Drug Enforcement Agency, banning it from

medical use.

Many of the studies we mentioned here happened in countries where it's allowed for religious

purposes including Brazil and Peru.

In which case, researchers would have to wait for the perfect series of events: volunteers

who experience depression and are willing to drink ayahuasca.

As for larger controlled studies outside of religious exception, we may just have to wait

a bit longer.

As always, more research is needed.

What other psychedelic drugs do scientists think might have medicinal benefits?

Find out in this video here with my girl Cristen Conger. What other science questions do you

have about stuff like this?

Let us know down in the comments, make sure you subscribe for more DNews and thanks for

tuning in.
