How Should We Define Intelligent Life? - Duration: 4:21.
If you were to rank plants, whales, and humans based on their intelligence - who would win
the Most Intelligent Species on Earth Award?
One of the biggest questions humans have ever asked is: Are we alone in the universe?
There's a field of science dedicated to this question known as the Search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence - or SETI.
In order for SETI scientists to do their job they had to agree on what makes certain life
Intelligent, so they'd know what to look for.
SETI scientists came to the consensus that intelligence is associated with the ability
to create technology.
Some of our best technologies emit radio waves and so SETI has concentrated their work on
searching for radio waves in the universe.
But if we're only searching for life like us, we may be overlooking species that are
intelligent in other ways.
There are many different types of intelligent life on our own planet.
For example, plants.
That may sound ridiculous, but if you grade intelligence based on a species' communication
system and their ability to populate a planet, plants would be considered by many scientists
as an intelligent species.
Charles Darwin - who passionately studied plants for most of his life - thought of them
like upside-down animals where their thinking organ was at the root and their sexual organs
were on top.
And - he may have been more right than he realized.
Recent studies have shown that plant roots not only have the ability to sense soil characteristics
like water, nutrients, and the availability of oxygen, but they also change their behavior
based on this information.
Instead of just one big brain - or root - most plants have millions of individual roots,
each working together like a complex network - no one root necessary to survive.
Because of this, plants have a remarkable ability to survive catastrophic events.
Trees, for example, can live on even after losing 90% or more of their roots.
With this unique ability, it's no wonder why plants dominate animals on land with more
than 1,000 times the amount of biomass.
So - if world domination was a numbers game, plants would beat animals a thousand to one.
But animals eat plants so maybe there's more to intelligence.
Like brains, right?
Humans are known for their uniquely large brains.
To compare this to other species, scientists came up with something called the Encephalization
Quotient, or EQ.
An EQ for a given species is calculated using their average brain to body mass ratio compared
to other similarly sized animals.
It's thought of as sort of a proxy for intelligence.
On the higher end, humans have an EQ of around 7.8 - which means our brain is about 7.8 times
larger than would be expected for our body size - the bottlenose dolphin is at 5.3, chimpanzees
are at 2.5, and dogs are around 1.2.
And what about whales?
Whales are considered to be reasonably intelligent And certain species like the Sperm Whale the
heaviest brains in the animal kingdom.
But interestingly, the sperm whale has a measly EQ of 0.58That's because the EQ equation
doesn't work as well for animals that are extremely large or extremely small.
To get a more accurate understanding of whale's intelligence - we'd have to compare how
complex different species' communication systems are.
Humans are thought to dominate the animal kingdom in this category, but whales may not
be that far behind.
Humpback whales, for instance, are known for their remarkably complex songs - their mating
calls, for example, are the most complex acoustic displays in the entire animal kingdom.
And interestly enough, a recent study suggests that prairie dogs may have a communication
system that's even more complex than whales.
One researcher who studied the prairie dog for three decades found that their calls contained
different barks, squeals, squeaks,and frequency modulations, and each animal called out in
unique tones.
The prairie dogs had different calls for different predators and the same "words" could be
understood by all the members of the colony.
The universe just may be filled with intelligent prairie dogs, whales, and plants -andddd we'd
never know it.
SETI couldn't find them because they don't create radiowave emitting technology.
But maybe in the future we'll think of a better way to search for all possible forms
of intelligent life... for now we'll have to stick to the kinds of aliens that act like
us.

public that they're not going to want to
go against the will of the public about
the forces presented voters for Trump
and sisters not going to ice will cut
off their own supply of power by
impeaching their president so it's very
unlikely because of the bonds of power
the houses that any of them are going to
fight to you know push the process in
place that would need to transfer
impeachment and perhaps if public
opinion turned against him to such an
extent that maybe I wasn't
representative would feel that they were
representing the will of the people that
remains to be seen
similarly when I think maybe some of you
if not his and dealings with Russia and
his relationships of Russia if some of
those are revealed to be more devious
like a so we've already heard that like
I can imagine some of the old
Republicans like John McCain may turn
against him and see it as an impeachable
offense but at the moment he's going
nowhere and i think you know the fact
that lots of people don't like them and
I maybe having at a dislikable character
does not equal crimes commission that
are our haven't worthy of of impeachment
so I had 40 Romans I I can't imagine a
supplement that's gonna happen but it's
certainly something I think that people
are going to continue to talk of tips
for the next four years so i hope this

Jeep Wrangler Omix-ADA Fender Flare, OE Style (2007-2017 JK) Review & Install - Duration: 5:38.
I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation of the Omix-ADA
Fender Flare fitting all 2007 and up JKs.
These are available individually as you see here, you can get each one of the corners
separately, or you can get a kit of all four.
Today we're gonna talk through the installation of these fender flares which is a very simple
one out of three wrench installation.
If you're just installing one as you see here, it will take you a little bit less than an
hour, of course, the kit will be a little bit more, but we'll talk more about the install
in a second.
We're also gonna talk about the construction and a few of the features of these flares.
These are going to be for those of you who have broken a single flare either on the road
or off road, and are looking for a factory style replacement.
Or maybe you have aftermarket fender flares on your Jeep now, but you're looking to get
back to that factory style look.
That's another reason to purchase a full kit of all four of these flares.
These will look, feel, and fit just like a factory flare will.
The only difference is they don't have that OEM price tag on them.
These are going to be significantly less expensive than purchasing a set of four new flares from
Mopar.
However, they are still going to give you that factory style look and for all intents
and purposes, these are a factory style flare.
There is no difference to the naked eye.
These are going to accept all of your factory lighting, they're going to attach in all of
the same way as your factory flares, but again, just be less expensive.
These flares are made of a UV treated thermoplastic and as you can see, they look just like a
factory flare will.
They're going to resist the fading and cracking that you can get from UV rays beating down
on your flares constantly.
So, whether you're replacing your flares because they are faded or because they're cracked,
these are going to be an excellent option for you.
As I said before, they do attach in much the same way as your factory flares will.
However, these do not come with any hardware to attach them and chances are, when you remove
your factory flare, whether you're doing it to install this one, or it was forcefully
removed, the factory clips that hold the flare onto the body are not going to hold up.
Those clips are really more of a one-time use clip, they generally break whenever you
remove the flare.
So, I would recommend picking up a new set of hardware when installing these.
Now, those are the clips that go along the back side here.
There are also some clips that hold the inner fender liner onto the fender flares itself
across the front, and those are pins that can be re-used if you're careful when removing.
So, to get these installed all you need to do is first remove whatever flare you currently
have on the Jeep.
If you have factory flares, you wanna give your turn signal a quarter-turn, get the socket
out of the housing, unclip the wiring harness.
And then push those pins along the front side with an awl or a nail set or a very small
screwdriver.
If you push the center of those clips in, they'll release, and again, you can reuse
them.
Once you have all of those removed, it's really just a matter of pulling the fender flare
off again, you'll break some of those clips that hold it onto the body, but that's really
the best way to get it removed.
After that, you can remove any remnants of those clips that are in the body, install
your new clips onto your fender flare, and snap the flare into place.
Finally, you'll line up your inner fender liner with your new flare, and reuse those
push pins or if you purchased new ones, use the factory style pins to attach the inner
fender liner to your new fender flare.
Of course before you do that, you can go ahead and bolt your turn signal in place and you're
pretty much finished up.
Again, this is a very simple installation.
If you're not going from a factory flare, you're going from an aftermarket flare, the
removal process might be a little bit different, but once you get those flares removed the
installation is going to be just the same.
One flare can probably be installed in under an hour.
If you're doing a set of all four, it can probably take closer to two maybe a little
bit over.
But all you're going to need is traditional hand tools, maybe a trim removal tool to get
the remnants of those clips out of the body, and a little bit of patience.
This is something that anybody can do in their driveway.
These flares come in at right around $80 a piece or a little over $200 for a set of four,
which I think is an excellent price.
These are going to be significantly less expensive than if you went directly to a dealership
and tried to get an OEM set of fender flares.
But as I said before, these are going to look, function, and install just like a factory
set will, they'll just save you some money.
Now, all of that being said, you can get some aftermarket flare kits that may have pocket
style or a rivet style flare, they might be a flat flare.
There are some other options that are out there that are right around the same price.
So, if you're looking to upgrade your broken or faded flares and you want something that's
a little bit different, there are some other options in the same price range.
But, if you're looking for something that's going to be a factory style replacement, this
is definitely going to be a good option.
So, whether you're looking to replace a single factory flare that you broke either on the
road or off road, or you're looking to swap in a whole set of all four factory style fender
flares, either because yours are broken and cracked, or you're just looking to get back
to that factory styling, this is going to be an option that will save you a lot of money
off of going with an OEM fender flare.
But it still gives you the look and the feel.

Jeep Wrangler Barricade Roof Rack (2007-2017 JK 4 Door) Review & Install - Duration: 5:20.
I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review of the Barricade Roof Rack, fitting
your four-door 2007 and up JK.
Today, I'm gonna take you through the construction of this rack, the installation, and the pricing.
JKs had notoriously small interiors and there isn't a lot of cargo space.
So, if you're somebody who wants to be able to haul more gear, a roof rack like this might
be a nice option.
This roof rack isn't going to be nearly as expensive as some of the top roof racks on
the market.
However, it's also going to be a little less sleek-looking and you won't be able to get
quite as many accessories that bolt right onto it.
If you're looking for one of those other racks, we do have Gobi and a few other brands on
the site.
But if you're looking for one of the less expensive racks that will still get the job
done, this is a good one to take a look at.
This rack is built from two-inch round tubing that is 0.12-inch wall thickness, so, you're
going to have enough strength to carry up to 350 pounds up on the rack.
The whole thing is covered in a textured black powder coat finish, which will match a lot
of other off-road accessories, and also your factory black plastic accents on your Jeep.
The rack will mount to the windshield hinges in the front, and either to the frame or to
the body in the rear, so there isn't any drilling necessary.
If you have an after-market bumper, I would recommend using the frame mounts.
If you have a factory bumper that you're not willing to chop up, you will have to use the
body mounts, which do require some drilling into the body.
Once you have the rack installed, you'll be able to raise and lower your soft top by just
removing the crossbars of the rack.
However, you will not be able to install and uninstall your hard top with the rack in place.
Speaking of those removable crossbars, those are attached with large plastic thumb screws,
which make it very easy to remove and reinstall the crossbars.
However, sometimes those thumb screws like to strip out, so a lot of people have been
replacing them with a stainless steel wing nut set up, which is going to be a lot stronger
and hold up a lot better but still not require the use of any tools to get the crossbars
on and off.
This roof rack installs onto your Jeep really easily.
It's designed to be a bolt-on installation, unless you have a factory rear bumper that
you're not willing to cut up.
In that case, you have to use the body mounts in the rear of the rack, instead of the frame
mounts, and they do require you to drill into the body.
Those holes are going to be very visible if you were ever to remove the rack, so I definitely
recommend using the frame mounts instead.
If you have a factory rear bumper that you like, you can cut a hole in it or cut the
ends off of it in order to use those frame mounts.
And those of you with an after-market rear bumper won't have to worry about it.
You'll be able to use those frame mounts, and not drill the body, without a problem.
If you do end up using the body mounts, the installation becomes a little bit more difficult
because of the drilling you'll have to do.
To start this installation, you'll start at the front of the Jeep and remove the four
bolts in the windshield hinge to allow you to mount these two plates up on the hinges.
You'll start on one side, then put the crossbar across the front, which also has your lightened
up tabs on it, and finally, move along to the other side of the windshield.
From there, you have the bars that move toward the back of the Jeep, and finally, the bars
that attach to the back of the Jeep, down to the mounts.
At the same time you're installing those, you'll install the crossbar across the back
center of the Jeep, and finally, the mounts, whether you're using the body mounts or the
frame mounts.
After you have everything installed, you can go through and tighten down all the bolts.
As far as tools go for this installation, you won't need any specialty tools, however,
you will need a good set of Torx bits to remove the factory Torx bolts that are in your windshield
hinge.
As I mentioned before, this rack is toward the bottom of the price range, as far as roof
racks are concerned.
And really, the only reason for that is, one, that this isn't as sleek and stylish-looking
as some of the more expensive racks, but also, it doesn't have all of the bolt-on accessories
available for some of the other more well-known racks on the market.
For instance, the Gobi racks that we offer have everything from kayak and bike mounts,
to shovel and Hi-Lift jack mounts.
You could certainly get all those accessories bolted onto this roof rack, however, they're
going to require some modification and it's not going to be quite as simple.
So, if you're looking for an inexpensive rack, you like the way that this one looks, and
you don't need a lot of those bolt-on accessories, I would definitely recommend taking a look
at this one.
If you want a rack that's a little bit more sleek and stylish and has a lot more easy-to-add
accessory mounts, then we certainly have those options as well, for a little bit more money.
So, whether you have a two-door or a four-door JK and you're looking for a little bit of
additional cargo space, a roof rack is a really nice option.
Assuming you don't have any height restrictions, this rack will hold 350 pounds of additional
cargo and, as long as you like the look, this rack will save you a lot of money over those
top brands on the market.

HI! I had big plans to start making videos more regularly but everything is kind of garbage right now and so every time I started to do this it just felt silly.
BUT, the wonderful Taylor, inspired by the equally wonderful Rowan, decided to start a sort of tag video for resistance.
And I was not actually tagged, but I'm gonna do the thing anyway.
Taylor's video is, of course, lovely and insightful and better this is going to be,
so if you have not watched that yet, you should leave here and go watch that.
She lays out 5 things that you can mostly do in 5 minutes and it is fan-fucking-tastic.
OK, but maybe you've already seen that and now you're looking for 5 more things that you can do.
Because the instructions of the tag were not at all specific, mine is not 5 things you can do in under 5 minutes,
but just 5 more resources that you can check out if you're trying to figure out what to do.
Because sometimes it can feel really difficult to know where to get started or how to keep
up with all of the many things are constantly crying out for our attention.
I will say, for my own sake, making a point of engaging in some sort of direct action every day (or almost every day)
has been really good for me, and made these cold impersonal institutions feel less removed from my daily life.
I say that, of course, with the mountains of privilege that I possess.
My experiences are not universal.
Take care of yourself first, especially if your very existence is under attack right now.

or somebody knows what's what to guide you through all the machines and what you should be doing,
it's helpful to have somebody guiding you through activism and what kinds of things you can and should be doing.
But it's helpfully sort of compartmentalized in such a way that you can do what you can when you can.

I am hosting my friends for Solidarity Sunday this Sunday, the 12th,
date included because WHO KNOWS when I will actually edit and upload this.
I haven't actually done it yet so I can't speak with tremendous authority about this particular way of going about it,
but the general idea is about getting together with your friends, with other people to do the work.
I think it's really motivating and encouraging, partially because we can help each other,
but also because having this sense of community is a good reminder of the fact that this is all about people.
I will include a link Solidarity Sundays in the description,
but the basic idea is to just make a date with your friends and get together to write the letters, make the calls.
Just make the process feel a little less lonely and isolating.
