Hi I'm Donna Wolfe from naztazia.com Today I'm going
to show you how to crochet a solid
granny square hat. I'm collaborating
with my friend Crystal from the Bag O Day
Crochet and More channel. While my video
shows how to make the hat - Crystal's video
shows how to make the matching scarf. To
do this you'll need four colors of Red
Heart Super Saver yarn. And if you
crochet loosely, I would suggest a size
G hook. Otherwise use an H hook. We'll first
start off with the solid granny motif.
Make a slipknot, and chain 6. This is an
intermediate pattern, so check out my
Basics of Crochet if you need help. Slip
stitch to the first stitch. Chain 3 and
make two double crochet stitches in the
ring. Then chain 2. Make three double
crochet stitches in the ring.
Chain 2. Make three more double crochet
stitches in the ring. Chain 2. Make your
last set of 3 double crochet stitches. At
the end you can - Chain 2 and slip stitch - or I
like to make a half double crochet
stitch to the initial chain 3. You
can see what we did here. Cut your yarn.
For the next color round, I'm putting a
slip knot on my hook. Holding the end in
the back,
yarn over and make your double crochet
stitch in the space. And make one more
double crochet stitch. Next do 1 double
crochet in the next three stitches.
In the corner do 2 double crochet
stitches, Chain 2, and 2 double crochet
stitches.
Do 1 double crochet in the next three
stitches.
And in the corner do 2 double crochet,
Chain 2, and 2 double crochet. Go across
with three double crochet stitches.
In the corner do 2 double crochet, chain
2, and 2 double crochet.
And then work across with three double
crochet stitches.
In the last corner do 2 double crochet
stitches. And I like to do a half double
crochet. To close off the corner -
cut and knot your ends together so they
don't unravel.
Attach your green in the same way as we
did before and make two double crochet
stitches.
Crochet in each stitch across until you
reach the other corner.
Do 2 double crochet, chain 2, and 2
double crochet in the corner.
Crochet across this side, then do 2, 2,
and 2 in the corner.
And crochet across this side again. In the
last corner do 2 double crochet stitches
followed by a joining half double
crochet. Leave a long tail end for sewing.
And cut your yarn. You'll need to make a
total of six of these squares. Each
square should be around 4 inches or 10
centimeters. Six squares will total about
22 to 24 inches around. You'll need to
join the squares together by sewing them.
Take your long tail end and match up the
squares. You can use whatever sewing
method you wish. I like to weave the
needle under and out each of the
stitches on both squares.
When you get to the end push your yarn
through to the back side and weave in
your ends securely. Once you have the six
squares connected, match up both ends and
sew them together to form a ring.
Try it on at this point to ensure it
fits.
Moving on to the brim now - connect your
yarn in the back loops - and mark the
first stitch.
Do 1 double crochet in each stitch
around, using the back loops only.
When you get to the point where the
squares connect, do 1 double crochet and
mark it. Mark all the stitches around
where the squares connect. At the end,
slip stitch to the first stitch. For
round two, chain 3 for all of the marked
stitches. Do 2 double crochet stitches in
the same space. For all other stitches
just do 1 double crochet stitch.
At this marked space, I'll do 2 double
crochet stitches.
This increases the stitch count and
flares out the brim a bit.
All other stitches are just one double
crochet. At the end,
slip stitch to the initial chain 3. Try it
on again to see if you want to add
another round to the brim.
If you do just put two double crochet
stitches in each "clip" stitch and one
double crochet in the rest of the
stitches.
For the edging I like to do a reverse
single crochet stitch. To do this, work in
the opposite direction that you normally
do - making single crochet stitches.
Now for the top part of the hat, connect
your yarn, back loops only, and mark your
stitch. Make one double crochet in the
back loops only of each stitch.
Mark all of those stitches in between
squares with the paper clips.
For round two we're going to decrease at
each clip. Do a double crochet 2 together
here, and mark it.
Then do one double crochet stitch until
the next marked stitch.
At the next mark stitch do a double
crochet 2 together stitch - here and
mark it.
Do 1 double crochet stitch around until
the next marked stitch. Continue working in
this pattern making one double crochet
stitch in each stitch around - except at
the mark stitches - where you will do a
double crochet 2 together decrease
stitch. Once completed your hat will have
a total of seven rounds of white for the
top part -your six granny squares - and the
two or three rounds of brim - plus the
edging. Cut a 24 inch piece of yarn and
double it in your yarn needle. Using your
sewing needle, weave in and out along the
top edge.
And then pull the strands tightly to
close the top. Tie, knot, and weave in the
ends. And here is the granny square hat.
