-I know. I´m not stupid.
-I mean, I remember my talk that my dad gave me.
-[ Laughing ] Oh, God.
-And it was very much in line with how Jack approached Kevin.
-Yeah.
-I think, of course, listening to mom and whatnot,
it was just a quick conversation.
And I think it was inferred that you understand
what you need to do.
-Yeah.
-And I don´t know.
These are those moments where mom and dad just...
-Mom and dad need to be a united front
in these particular moments.
-Yeah, totally.
-And I think, you know,
although Rebecca finds out when Jack is not there.
-[ Laughs ]
Which is amazing, by the way,
with the three kids in there, talking about it.
And you just hear, "What?!" -"You´re having sex?!"
-Yeah, yeah.
-So, I think as soon as Jack gets home,
this is, like, Rebecca wants to put a plan in place
and immediately go down and make sure
that he knows what´s going on.
-Condoms and respect. -Yeah.

-The two most important pillars of that conversation.
-Yes. -Yeah.
-It´s not good enough.

and he´s gonna do better than me.

You´re putting too much pressure on yourself, son.
Everything´s gonna be fine. Just breathe.
-Here´s this moment with Randall,
where Randall, you´re starting to understand
that Randall has these panic attacks
and how it cripples him. -Yeah, crippling anxiety.
-My God, we use the same words.
-[ Laughs ]
-But it´s like this crippling anxiety,
and Mandy and I talked about this a bunch on set
was how do they deal with this as a couple, as parents?
This is the first time the audience has seen it,
but this is not the first time that they have understood this.
-And encountered it, yeah.
-Yeah, balance and trade-off and know what to do,
which was an important thing, I think,
for you and I to understand.
-Exactly, that although this is the first time you´re seeing it
on camera, these sorts of episodes with Randall
happen, you know, fairly frequently.
And I think we have our own way of sort of dealing with it.
And just in that particular moment,
Jack kind of steps up to the plate, like,
"I got it. I got it."
-For the past 16 years, I have put everything and everyone
ahead of myself -- you and the kids.
And I just knew that if I were ever to tell you
about this whole Ben thing, you would spin out about it
and I needed to have something for myself
without you getting in the way.
-I never thought of myself as being in your way, Rebecca.
-I think this sort of like beginnings of this fight --
these are issues that have been boiling for a while.
And Milo and I talked a lot about it.
I don´t think this is a couple that fights often at all.
-No.
-I think that they have a very open line of communication
with one another.
I can imagine that after 20 years of being together...
-Yeah, ´cause in ´96,
that puts them at almost a 20-year marker.
-Yeah, I think after 20 years together,
this is just a couple who maybe aren´t
obviously in the same place that they were
at the beginning of this relationship.
And I believe that there is a lot of resentment
that´s just been building for years
about, from my perspective, as a woman,
this is a woman who had a sort of trajectory
that she was on, that she saw for herself,
her life, and career.
She met Jack, fell in love, kind of tabled all of that,
tabled who she was fundamentally,
like, a huge piece of who she was, as an artist
and as a creative person.
Didn´t know whether or not she wanted to have kids.
Was sort of on the fence. That happened.
Cut to 16 years later.
The possibility of that entering her life again
is so equal parts exciting and thrilling
but also terrifying.
And I think the fact that it´s been sort of met
with some semblance of resistance from the beginning
from Jack, that he couldn´t let her have that,
is really disheartening.
-I feel like from Jack´s perspective,
he doesn´t like change, doesn´t care for change.
So, having a routine of so many years,
of having the kids and just the possible repetitive nature
of things, he enjoys it.
He loves it.
So, when there´s a stray from the path,
and things are just a little bit different,
even Miguel and Shelly getting a divorce --
-Yeah, really throws him for a loop.
-Yeah, shakes Jack up, to where, all of a sudden,
that constant is no longer constant.
It´s split and fractured and changed.
-Sure.
-Again, I always go back to Jack feels
like a very simple person --
-Yeah, I think they´re very black and white.
-Very black and white. -There´s not a lot of nuance.
-Yeah.
-Which I think Rebecca loves about him.
But in this particular situation,
it doesn´t work to his advantage.
-No, it doesn´t. It doesn´t.
-And this is a couple I feel like
that can normally talk through everything,
but they´ve never been here before.
-Yeah, no, and it´s a disconnect.
-[ Clears throat ]
Ahh.
-I think at that point Jack probably was hungry
and was like, "I´m gonna continue my evening,
even though I found this out about my wife."
Jack´s very black and white, easy wave
experiencing things and hearing things.
Those words do play for him,
and he does hear that he´s standing in the way
of something that his wife wanted.
And I think, also, in a very linear kind of way,
what his wife wanted was to spend time with another man.
You know? -But that --
-Listen, listen. -That´s not rational.
But yes. -Of course not!
But I´m trying to rationalize.
-But absolutely.
We´re exploring it from both sides of the coin, yes.
-Yeah.
-I think it is cruel that Jack leaves.
Clearly, like, they both needed to have a little bit of air.
That was where the conversation was gonna end
for the time being.
-I don´t feel that Jack was doing that in protest,
so much as, "I´m going because..."
-But it does feel self-destructive.
-Oh, yeah.
-Do you think he had the idea,
like, "I´m, gonna go, and I´m gonna get loaded now"?
-I don´t know about loaded, but "I´m gonna have a drink."
-Got it. -Yeah.
-Yeah. It´s interesting.
-Yeah, I don´t think the going to the restaurant
was in protest.
Maybe having a drink was. "I´m gonna do this.
You want to do that for you? I´m gonna go do this for me."
-Yeah.
