ED: BETSY DEVOS IS KNOWN FOR HER

GENEROUS POLITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS

TO REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES.

APPROXIMATELY HOW MUCH HAS SHE

AND HER FAMILY CAN TO BEAT IT TO

REPUBLICANS?

$1 MILLION, $50 MILLION

OR $200

MILLION?

DR. CHANG: $50 MILLION HAS

SOUNDS RIGHT.

ED: $200 MILLION.

DR. CHANG: WOW.

ED: HER FATHER IN LAW MADE HIS

FORTUNE WITH CLEANING SUPPLIES.

WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE COMPANY?

AMWAY OR PROCTER & GAMBLE?

DR. CHANG: AMWAY.

ED: IT IS AMWAY.

YOU ARE ALL THE HOT SEAT -- OFF

THE HOT SEAT.

JANE WHO SHOULD BE WORRIED AND

WHEN WILL YOU HAVE MORE

DEFINITIVE INFORMATION FOR THEM?

DR. CHANG: AT THIS TIME, WE

DON'T HAVE PLANS TO CLOSE ANY

SCHOOLS.

THE WAY WE SHOULD THINK ABOUT

THIS, IT'S NOT ABOUT CLOSING THE

SCHOOL'S COMMENTS ABOUT

REBUILDING THE INFRASTRUCTURE.

A LOT OF OUR SCHOOLS ARE IN

BUILDINGS THAT ARE IN VERY POOR

CONDITION.

THE MAYOR HAS STATED PUBLICLY

THAT HE'S GOING TO PUT $1

BILLION TO BUILD OF

INFRASTRUCTURE.

THAT'S WHAT WE SHOULD BE TALKING

ABOUT.

JANET: YOU WILL HAVE TO MOVE THE

STUDENTS WHILE THOSE BUILDINGS

ARE BEING CONSOLIDATED OR

RENOVATED.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE STUDENTS?

IT WILL TAKE MORE THAN THE THREE

MONTHS DURING THE SUMMER.

JANET: WE ARE GOING TO ENGAGE IN

NEIGHBORHOOD CONVERSATIONS.

DR. CHANG: WHAT IMMEDIATE

UPGRADES NEED TO BE MADE IN

SCHOOL BUILDINGS AND WHAT NEW

SCHOOL BUILDINGS NEED TO BE

BUILT.

JANET:

NEXT YEAR, THERE WILL BE

NO STUDENTS IN SCHOOLS CURRENTLY

THAT WANT TO GO SOMEWHERE ELS

-- WILL HAVE TO GO SOMEWHERE

ELSE.

ED: I SPOKE TO SOMEONE THIS

MORNING WHO SAID ASK YOU ABOUT

THE WATER.

STILL COME I'M GETTING QUESTIONS

ABOUT THE WATER.

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS GOT A D

FOR WATER QUALITY.

THIS IS PART OF THE BIG PROBLEM,

RIGHT?

DR. CHANG: WE HAVE TO MAKE

IMMEDIATE UPGRADES TO ALL SCHOOL

BUILDINGS.

THERE'S EASY THINGS THAT CAN BE

DONE ACROSS THE BOARD.

SOME OF THE DEEPER THINGS THAT

NEED TO BE DONE SUCH AS CHANGE

IN HYPING IN OUR SCHOOLS --

CHANGING PIPING IN OUR SCHOOLS.

OUR WATER IS SAFE.

WE TEST OUR WATER TWICE A YEAR.

IF THERE'S ANY SORT OF READING

THAT CAUSES ALARM, WE SHUT IT

DOWN.

JANET: WHAT IS THE D FOR?

YOU ARE STRUCK BY THAT GREAT?

DR. CHANG: I DON'T KNOW WHERE

THAT LETTER GRADE CAME FROM.

WE HAVE THE RIGHT PROCESSES AND

WRITE PROCEDURES IN PLACE AND WE

ARE MAKING ADDITIONAL

INVESTMENTS TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE

UPGRADED ALL OF OUR WATER

FOUNTAINS.

WE NEED TO GET TO A POINT WHERE

WE HAVE CLEAN WATER FOR DRINKING

IN EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL.

ED: WE APPRECIATE YOUR TIME.

THANK YOU.

IT IS NOT BASEBALL SEASON OR I

WOULD HAVE ASKED YOU A RED SOX

QUESTION.

>> REACTIONS ON THE FIRST 30

DAYS OF PRESIDENT TRUMP.

ED: HE'S RESPONSIBLE FOR THE

EDUCATION OF KIDS IN BOSTON.

DR. TOMMY CHANG IS OUR GUEST.

>> THE INSIDE WORD FROM

WASHINGTON TO BEACON HILL.

TODAY'S NEWSMAKERS ARE GOING "ON

THE RECORD."

ED: GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US "ON THE

RECORD" THIS MORNING.

DR. TOMMY CHANG IS WITH US.

HE IS A LONG WAY FROM HOME.

CALIFORNIA IS WHERE HE WAS THE

CHARTER SCHOOL PRINCIPAL.

DR. CHANG IS A GRADUATE OF YOU

PEN -- 56,000 KIDS.

THAT IS QUITE A RESPONSIBILITY.

DR. CHANG: I LOVE THE WORK.

EVERY MINUTE OF IT.

JANET: THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH

US.

WE HAVE A NEW EDUCATION

SECRETARY IN WASHINGTON.

BETSY DEVOS

SQUEAKED AND AFTER

THE VICE PRESIDENT HAD TO VOTE.

WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST WORRIES

WITH HER AT THE HELM?

JANET: SHE IS OUR SECRETARY OF

EDUCATION.

DR. CHANG: MY HOPE IS WE CAN

WORK TOGETHER.

SHE NEEDS TO COME INTO THE

WONDERFUL WORK THAT IS HAPPENING

IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN BOSTON AND

ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

SHE NEEDS TO USE HER ROLE TO

MAKE SURE WE ARE DOING THE BEST

WE CAN FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE.

WE'VE MADE GAINS OVER THE LAST

DECADE AND SHE NEEDS TO PRESERVE

THOSE GAINS.

HOW WE MAKE SURE THAT

STUDENTS

ARE NOT DISCRIMINATED IN

SCHOOLS.

THAT THOSE STUDENTS WHO HAVE THE

MOST -- HAVE BEEN THE MOST

MARGINALIZED ARE CLOSING GAPS.

JANET: SHE IS A BIG PROPONENT OF

CHARTER SCHOOLS.

ANY FEARS ON YOUR PART THAT

THAT WILL BE AT THE TOP OF HER

AGENDA?

DR. CHANG: SHE NEEDS TO SERVE

ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS, WHETHER THEY

ARE CHARTER OR TRADITIONAL

PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

OR WHETHER THEY ARE MAGNETS.

THEY ARE ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND

WE HAVE TO HOLD HER ACCOUNTABLE

TO MAKE SURE SHE --

JANET: DOES THAT WERE YOU A BIT?

DR. CHANG: ABSOLUTELY.

ED: LET'S TALK ABOUT BOSTON

SCHOOL STUDENTS.

BOSTON KIDS COME FROM 139

COUNTRIES.

DR. CHANG: THERE'S ABOUT 80

DIFFERENT LANGUAGES BEING

SPOKEN.

ED: ONE OF EVERY TWO

STUDENTS

SPEAKS ANOTHER LEG WHICH --

ANOTHER LANGUAGE.

IS THIS THREATENING FEDERAL

FUNDING IN BOSTON AND DOES THAT

WORRY YOU?

DR. CHANG: YES.

WE SEE OVER $100 MILLION OF

FEDERAL FUNDING.

MANY OF THOSE FUNDS COME FROM

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

WE WELCOME EVERY YOUNG PERSON.

IT IS THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT

TO RECEIVE A FREE PUBLIC

EDUCATION IN THIS COUNTRY.

WE DO NOT ASK

FOR THE

IMMIGRATION STATUS OF ANY OF OUR

STUDENTS.

WE WELCOME EVERY STUDENT IN

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

I SPOKE TO OUR WELCOME CENTER.

OUR FAMILIES NEED TO FEEL

WELCOMED.

THEY SHOULD NOT BE GOING THROUGH

EXTREME BETTING IN BOSTON PUBLIC

SCHOOLS.

ED: HOW MUCH COULD IT COST

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS?

DR. CHANG:

WE GET OVER $100

MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING.

THOSE ARE BOUND BY STATUTES WE

WILL HAVE TO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON

IT.

I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE

FIRST PRIORITY IS MAKING EVERY

STUDENT FEEL WELCOME.

JANET: ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS

THAT HAPPENED AFTER YOU TOOK

OVER WAS THE EXTENDED THE SCHOOL

DAY BY 40 MINUTES.

AFTER THE UNIONS GOT ON BOARD

AND AGREE TO THIS.

AS IT MADE A DIFFERENCE?

DO YOU HAVE HARD NUMBERS TO BACK

THIS UP?

DR. CHANG: A THIRD OF OUR

SCHOOLS AT THIS POINT HAVE THE

ADDITIONAL 40 MINUTES.

THE REST WILL GET THE EXTRA 40

MINUTES NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.

THAT WILL GIVE US 20 ADDITIONAL

SCHOOL DAYS FOR THE YEAR.

AT THIS TIME, WE DON'T HAVE THE

HEART DATA -- HARD DATA.

THAT I SEE GREAT THINGS

HAPPENING IN OUR SCHOOLS.

THE EXTRA 40 MINUTES ARE BEING

USED FOR ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION,

DOING ROBOTICS, KIDS LEARNING

FOREIGN LANGUAGES -- IT'S A LOT

OF GREAT LEARNING GOING ON.

JANET: WHERE ARE THESE ONE THIRD

SCHOOLS?

MIDDLE SCHOOLS, ELEMENTARY

SCHOOLS, HIGH SCHOOLS?

DR. CHANG: THEY WILL BE EVERY

K-8 ACROSS BOSTON CITY.

IT IS BECAUSE OF AN ADDITIONAL

$40 MILLION THE MAYOR IS

CONSUMING.

-- CONTRIBUTING.

ED: HOW MANY DAYS ARE ADDED?

DR. CHANG: IT'S EQUIVALENT TO 20

ACTION DAYS ED: HAVE YOU DEAL

WITH THE DELICATE BALANCE OF

TEACHER COMPENSATION?

DR. CHANG: THE TEACHERS ARE

GETTING COMPENSATED FOR IT.

A LOT OF THAT TIME IS USED TO

HELP TEACHERS PLAN AS WELL.

THERE'S DOLLARS FOR PROFESSIONAL

DEVELOPMENT.

JANE DO YOU KNOW WHERE MOST OF

THE 40 MINUTES ARE GOING?

DOES IT HAVE TO GO TO MASCOMA

MUSIC, WHATEVER?

-- MATH, MUSIC, WHATEVER?

DR. CHANG: THERE IS NO EDICT.

EVERY SCHOOL MAKES THOSE

DECISIONS.

ED: WE ARE READY TO HIT THE POP

QUIZ.

ARE YOU READY?

DR. CHANG: ALWAYS.

ED:

WE WERE TALKING ABOUT BETSY

DEVOS.

WHAT IS HER HOME STATE?

DR. CHANG: I BELIEVE THAT IS

MICHIGAN.

ED: IT IS MICHIGAN.

EXCELLENT.

SECRETARY

EVOS RAISED SOME

EYEBROWS SUGGESTING WHAT

HAPPENED TO THE DETROIT SCHOOL

SYST

--

DR. CHANG: VOUCHERS ACROSS

SCHOOLS CAN MAKE IT ALL CHARTER.

ED: EVEN FURTHER.

This Powerful New Technology May Be The Only Way To Explore Venus - Duration: 4:08.

Imagine we've successfully landed a robot on Venus!

Nice job... [pause, checks watch] Annnd now it's dead.

Hello fellow carbon-based lifeforms, Ian here for DNews.

I want you to imagine building a robot that can land on the surface of Venus.

Actually, imagine building a robot that will land on the surface of HELL and you'll have

a better idea of what to expect.

Yes, Venus is a toxic hellhole that's not only hot enough on the surface to melt lead,

but the thick carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere has a pressure about 90 times greater than

Earth's.

This isn't very good news for any robots we want to send there to explore the planet

and do science.

But there IS hope.

NASA engineers at the Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, are developing a new kind

of integrated circuit that not only survives the rigors of being in space, it could also

allow the delicate electronics inside Venus landers to live 100 times longer than previous

efforts.

It's not like we haven't tried landing on Venus before.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, the Soviet Union tried to send a series of 16 spacecraft to

Venus as part of the Venera program — which included flybys, atmospheric probes and landers.

Of the early landing attempts, Venera 3 to Venera 6 either burned up, crashed or got

crushed by Venus' atmosphere.

Even though it got crushed before touchdown, Venera 4 has the historic distinction as being

the first probe to transmit data from another planet's atmosphere in 1967.

In 1970, Venera 7 made history as the first ever soft landing on another planet.

It sent back 23 minutes of data before dying.

After this, the Soviets had more success from Venera 8 — which landed in 1972, returning

50 minutes of data.

Venera 9 landed in 1975 and took the first ever black and white photos from another planet's

surface.

Venera 13, in 1981, and 14, in 1982, returned color panoramic views from Venus' surface,

revealing the alien geology and incredibly hazy atmosphere.

In 1984, Russia launched the two Vega missions that included landers and atmospheric balloons.

The US even gave Venus a go when they parachuted probes to the surface during the 1978 Pioneer

Venus mission.

One of the probes continued to transmit data an hour after landing on the surface.

But all Venus surface missions quickly succumbed to the extreme heat and pressure, most lasting

for less than a couple of hours.

Venera 13 holds the record, lasting 127 minutes before melting.

Although our technology has advanced since this exciting era of Venus exploration, we

still don't have the ability to protect them from the extreme environment for very

long.

Conventional silicon circuits stop working at high temperatures long before they start

to melt.

But now, NASA engineers are testing an extremely durable "silicon carbide semiconductor integrated

circuit" — it's a circuit made out of a new silicon mix that continues to function

as a circuit should, only at much higher temperatures.

It was originally being developed for use in hot sections of fuel-efficient aircraft.

Knowing that they could tolerate temperatures up to 900 degrees Fahrenheit, the NASA engineers

placed samples of the circuit into the Glenn Extreme Environments Rig (GEER).

This instrument not only replicates the temperatures found on Venus' surface, it also applies

the same pressures.

And after 521 hours of extreme testing, the integrated circuits continued to operate as

designed.

To use conventional electronics in space, heavy shielding is needed to protect delicate

components.

If this new circuit technology is used for space robots, I'd imagine that this shielding

may not be required, reducing weight, boosting electronics longevity in harsh environments,

reducing launch weight and ultimately costs.

But the thing that makes this kind of tech development REALLY interesting is the very

obvious applications a highly durable integrated circuit has on Earth.

Robotics are used in a range of industries and are increasingly being used in extremely

hazardous environments — building tougher electronics to boost their operational lives

would obviously be a bonus.

Kid Rock Floated as Potential GOP Senate Candidate - Duration: 1:52.

For Complex News, I'm Hanuman Welch. We all remember Kid Rock, right? As one of the vanguards

of the rap/rock movement that history would soon rather forget, Rock occasionally sticks

his head out of his Michigan bunker to drop knowledge pipe bombs like

"Beyoncé, to me, doesn't have a f**king 'Purple Rain,' but she's the biggest thing on Earth.

How can you be that big without at least one 'Sweet Home Alabama' or 'Old Time Rock & Roll'?

People are like, 'Beyoncé's hot. Got a nice f**king *ss.' I'm like, 'Cool, I like skinny

white chicks with big t*ts.' Doesn't really f**king do much for me."

Kid Rock is basically what Pixar would come up with if you asked them to create a cartoon

version of herpes who voted for Mitt Romney. Rock, who was once subpoenaed to produce a

glass dildo as evidence in a lawsuit with the insane clown posse, could be mulling a

political career all his own.

According to Roll Call, Kid Rock's name was mentioned at a Republican Party convention

in Michigan last weekend. To get a bead on where Rock's politics fall, he supported Ben

Carson in the 2016 presidential election and later switched to Donald Trump as he became

the party's nominee. If you're interested you can still pick up one of these gorgeous

Gods, guns, and Trump t-shirts off Kid Rock's website for $24.99 plus shipping alongside

this gem.

Rock is responsible for some of the worst music ever recorded and since this is 2017

and a pussy-groping reality tv star is somehow president, sure, why not, the honorable representative

bad-wit-da-bah should totally be elevated to state legislator.

Woof, that's still terrible.

Just a reminder that this is what Kid Rock used to look like before he rebranded himself

into some honky-tonk outlaw from Detroit

That's all for now but for everything else subscribe to complex on youtube, for complex

news I'm Hanuman Welch.

They're pushing off.

HOLDEN: Jam their comms and get 'em on tight beam.

Rocinante, what's the problem?

We're complying with your orders.

You lied to me, Doctor.

You hacked into Eros.

We found your dead colleague in the airlock.

I told Dr. Kane not to touch it,

but he never listens.

He tried to get a sample, but it attacked him.

Almost like it felt threatened.

I've never seen anything like it.

It was everywhere.

Holden, they're changing course,

heading back around Eros.

They're trying to use the asteroid to block our jamming.

You need to turn your ship around right now

and surrender to us.

All of you might be infected.

We have to be sure.

We swore an oath and have a duty to broadcast

the truth to the system.

Listen to me, Doctor,

you have no idea what you're dealing with here.

It's not a disease,

it's obviously some kind of weapon.

You Martians have been using these Belters as guinea pigs.

If any one of you are infected,

you could wipe out millions!

Turn your ship around.

I promise you'll not be harmed.

We won't let you silence us to protect your experiment.

If you broadcast, people will come here to investigate

and we won't be able to contain it.

This is not our experiment, we're not a military unit.

My name is James Holden,

I'm not your enemy.

NAOMI: We're out of time.

If they get the asteroid between our ships,

we lose our jamming signal

and they'll be able to broadcast everything

they saw inside Eros.

Alex, get a missile lock.

Release fire control to me.

-Are you serious? -(SHOUTS) Just do it!

You got less than a minute.

I'm trying to save your life.

I swear to you we want the same thing.

Please don't make me kill you.

If we truly want the same things,

then you know what you need to do.

You got thirty seconds.

AMOS: Ten seconds.

State Offers 'Do It Yourself' Death Row - Duration: 5:15.

THE DEATH PENALTY CONTINUES TO BE A CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE

WHEN YOU CONSIDER THE FACT THAT DANISH DRUGMAKERS THAT MAKE

THE LETHAL INJECTION USER EXECUTIONS HAVE NOW

ACTUALLY BANDED FOR EXECUTIONS.

AS A RESULT, STATES THAT HAVE LEGALIZED A DEATH PENALTY

ARE SCRAMBLING FOR A COCKTAIL OF DRUGS THAT ACTUALLY IN A

LOT OF CASES DON'T WORK AND COULD LEAD TO CRUEL AND

UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT OUT THERE BEEN CASES OF PEOPLE WHO

HAVE BEEN INJECTED WITH THESE DANGEROUS COCKTAILS AND

THEY LITERALLY SUFFERED FOR TWO HOURS BEFORE DYING.

AS A RESULT, ARIZONA IS UNVEILING A NEW DEATH

PENALTY PLAN.

THEY ARE ALLOWING DEFENSE LAWYERS TO PROVIDE THE

DRUGS NECESSARY TO EXECUTE THEIR CLIENTS.

OH MY GOD.

IT'S BANANAS.

LET ME GIVE YOU THE DETAILS ON IT.

WITH DRUGS THAT CAN LEGALLY BE USED FOR LETHAL INJECTION

IN SHORT SUPPLY, THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS

LATEST EXECUTION PROTOCOL STATES THAT ATTORNEYS FOR DEATH

ROW INMATES ARE WELCOME TO BRING ALONG THEIR OWN.

THE INMATES COUNSEL OR OTHER THIRD PARTIES ACTING ON

BEHALF OF THE INMATES COUNSEL MAY PROVIDE THE DEPARTMENT WITH

THE SEDATIVE, PENTOBARBITAL, THAT IS THE MAIN DRUG THAT

IS USED, OR AN ANESTHETIC, SODIUM PINTA THOUGHT IF THEY

CAN OBTAIN IT FROM A CERTIFIED OR LICENSED PHARMACIST,

PHARMACY, COMPOUND PHARMACY, MANUFACTURER, OR SUPPLIER.

THIS IS INSANE.

1ST OF ALL, IF THE STATE HAS A HARD TIME OBTAINING THE

DRUGS THAT THEY WANT, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT A DEFENSE

ATTORNEY OR ANOTHER THIRD-PARTY WOULD BE ABLE TO OBTAIN A?

SECONDLY, THIS IS AN ETHICAL AND UNLAWFUL.

LET ME GIVE YOU A STATEMENT FROM A LEGAL EXPERT THAT A

PRISONER A PRISONERS LAWYER SIMPLY CANNOT OBTAIN THESE

DRUGS LEGALLY OR ILLEGALLY TRANSFER THEM TO THE

DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS, SO IT'S HARD TO FATHOM WHAT

THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT WAS THINKING INCLUDING THIS

NONSENSICAL PROVISION AS PART OF ITS EXECUTION PROTOCOL.

THEY ARE KILLING THE GUY.

ITíS LIKE TELLING A DEFENSE

LAWYER, NO, IT'S OKAY.

YOU CAN BRING THE GUN AND SHOOT THEM IF YOU WANT.

NO, IT'S OKAY, YOU ARE HIS DEFENSE LAWYER, IT DIDN'T

WORK OUT LIKE YOU WANTED, YOU BRING THE ROPE AND STRANGLE

HIM YOURSELF.

THAT'S OKAY.

ARE WE NOT MERCIFUL?

WE ARE ALLOWING THAT AS WELL.

NO, THAT IS NOT HOW IT SHOULD WORK IN A HUMANE SOCIETY.

YOU KNOW THAT I WAS IN FAVOR OF THE DEATH PENALTY UNTIL I

FOUND OUT THAT WE WERE EXECUTING PEOPLE THAT WERE INNOCENT.

THE INNOCENCE PROJECT HAS RELEASED SO MANY PEOPLE

FROM DEATH ROW DNA APPROVED WERE INNOCENT.

4%

OF THE PEOPLE ON DEATH ROW ON AVERAGE ARE INNOCENT.

YOU SHOULD BE AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY ON THAT YOU WANT

JUSTICE?

IS INJUSTICE, IT'S A GROSS INJUSTICE TO KILL THE WRONG

PERSON THEN ON TOP OF THAT, NOT ONLY FOR THE REAGAN IS THE

SUM GOT SIGNS FOR THE WRONG GUYS, YOU WERE GOING TO

MAKE THEM SUFFER FOR HOURS AND HOURS AS YOU INJECT THE

WRONG DRUGS INTO THEM, BUT ARE YOU NOT KIND THAT YOU ALLOW

THEIR OWN DEFENSE ATTORNEYS TO MURDER THEM INSTEAD.

THAT IS THE KIND OF SOCIETY THAT WE ARE IN FAVOR OF?

YOU ARE GOING TO RAISE YOUR HAND AND SAY I REALLY LIKE THAT IDEA.

IT IS CRAZY.

OKAY, THAT IS ON YOU.

THE DRUG MANUFACTURER IN DENMARK FEELS THAT THEY

HAVE A MORAL OBLIGATION TO BAN THE DRUG THAT THEY

PREVIOUSLY SUPPLIED FOR EXECUTIONS.

THAT HAS LED TO A HUGE PROBLEM IN THE UNITED STATES AND SO

IT IS JUST INTERESTING BECAUSE VARIOUS STATES ARE COPING

WITHIN DIFFERENT WAYS.

IN THIS CASE, THEY WANT TO MAKE IT SO WITH DEFENSE ATTORNEY

CAN PROVIDE THE DRUG WHICH IS CRAZY BUT THEN THERE ARE

ALSO CRAZY LAWS PASSED IN OTHER RED STATES LIKE MISSISSIPPI.

MISSISSIPPI'S HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES THIS MONTH

ACTUALLY PASSED A BILL WHICH SHOULD BECOME LAW MEANS

THAT IF LETHAL INJECTIONS ARE UNAVAILABLE OR RULED

UNCONSTITUTIONAL, THEY CAN USE A GAS CHAMBER, A FIRING

SQUAD, OR AN ELECTRIC CHAIR.

ALSO IN 2015 UTAH APPROVED THE USE OF FIRING SQUADS IF DRUGS

ARE UNAVAILABLE, AND THE STATE IS THE MOST RECENT

CARRYOUT

EXECUTION BY THAT METHOD IN 2010.

THERE IS NO PRETTY WAY TO KILL SOMEONE.

I DIDN'T AGREE WITH THIS BACK WHEN I WAS IN FAVOR OF THE

DEATH PENALTY, BUT I HAVE BEEN MORE CONVINCED LATELY THAT

IF YOU WANT TO SEND A MESSAGE TO NOT KILL PEOPLE, DOING IT BY

KILLING THEM IS VERY IRONIC AND PERHAPS NOT THE RIGHT WAY TO GO.

BY THE WAY, WHY DID I CHANGE MY POSITION ON THIS?

BECAUSE I NOW HAVE KIDS.

SOME PEOPLE THINK YOU SHOULD HIT YOUR KIDS AND IF I DON'T

WANT THEM TO COMMIT ACTS OF VIOLENCE, HITTING THEM IS A VERY

IRONIC AND COUNTERPRODUCTIVE WAY TO DO THAT.

I THINK IT PALES IN COMPARISON TO THE DEATH PENALTY.

REALLY GUYS, WE'RE GOING TO PUT PEOPLE IN GAS CHAMBERS?

I HOPE WE'RE BETTER THAN THAT.

Interior Mapping: Drone Deliveries, Emergency Rescue, and Smart Homes | Avideh Zakhor - Duration: 3:49.

Avideh Zakhor: I live in Berkeley and I've been living there for 30 years and I know

all the streets and how to get to my home and my work.

But I still use Google Maps because at any point in time you don't know the amount

of traffic between where you are and where you want to go, and which one of the many

routes available to you has an accident or a slowdown or too many other people are going

on.

The value of exterior mapping is I think by now pretty well understood by the public.

Interiors you can argue less about people getting lost and traffic and stuff like that.

But imagine package delivery like Amazon going to deliver our packages through drones all

the way to the exterior of our building.

But then you wanted the last mile of delivering those same things into different offices or

apartments inside a building, and that would also require mapping.

So the idea is to make the interior mapping be seamlessly integrated with exterior mapping

so that you can have true end-to-end connectivity between different points.

All of us, through this amazing device we carry with ourselves, cell phones, are continuously

collecting signals and images and data about our surrounding.

Whether or not we know it and whether or not we like it we're doing that unconsciously

all the time.

Through crowdsourcing, so if you get the aggregate of all the people who are going into all these

indoor spaces you have the potential to map every indoor space.

The typical cell phone has over 40 sensors.

There's accelerometers, gyroscopes, barometers, thermometers, Wi-Fi signal, Bluetooth, all

kinds of RF signal gathering capability.

I hate to say it but a lot of it are being tracked because to use a lot of the applications

on your phone you allowed the company that sold you the phone to collect that information.

And that's almost synonymous with mapping.

So those could be used in order to map the interiors.

These very same people whose crowdsourced data you used to map, you can use that same

information to locate people.

When there is an emergency – either an earthquake, fire or anything like that the first responders

will have a lot easier time knowing where people are and knowing how to rescue people.

And just having more information is always useful.

The other positive thing in terms of knowing where you are iand how many people are where

and knowing the maps is this idea of smart buildings.

You can control the many, many sensors and actuators that are inside the building to

your liking.

So suppose that I like the temperature in my office to be no warmer than 64.

Just because there's a map and because they know where I am, that I'm not in my office,

there's not going to be any cold HVAC air being pumped into it.

That saves energy.

And when a day that I'm not working in my office but working in the conference room

across the hall from my office the same temperature preferences can be applied to that room.

Localizing people enables them to be more comfortable and more in tune with the environment

that they're in.

And it could result in potential energy savings inside buildings if that information is readily

available.

DIREWOLVES IN ASOIAF AND WOLVES IN SLAVIC FOLKLORE - Duration: 7:47.

Hello, my name is Goran and Welcome to another video segment that I like to call Lupus in

Fabula.

Today we are going to talk about similarities and differences between wolf (or direwolf)

warging in George RR Martin's series A Song Of Ice And Fire, or Game of Thrones series,

and wolf shapeshifting in mythologies, primarily in Slavic folklore.

So, don't go anywhere this is going to be interesting… hopefully.

In George RR Martin's series humans can shapeshift into other animals, but wolves

are, as it was mentioned in "Dance with dragons", different.

They are harder to slip into, but if you do, the bond between the two of you is stronger

then with any other animal.

As Haggon says in Prologue of Dance With Dragons: Wolves were harder.

A man might befriend a wolf, even break a wolf, but no man could truly tame a wolf.

"Wolves and women wed for life," Haggon often said.

"You take one, that's a marriage.

The wolf is part of you from that day on, and you're part of him.

Both of you will change."

In Bulgaria for instance, there is a belief which states that if wolf and man were born

on the same day, they will die at the same time as well.

Wolf always played significant role in Slavic mythology.

The magical practice of the Slavs is connected to wolves as well, whether it's about protection

rituals, astral or ethereal projection or rituals for the cult of the ancestors.

According to Veselin Čajkanović, the wolf is the mythical ancestor of the Serbian people.

The belief that the wolf is animalistic ancestor of Serbs manifested itself in many traditions

and ceremonies.

For instance, when a son is born, the announcement of his birth in the village would go like

this: "Of the she-wolf a wolf is borne!"

All of this goes to show how strong was (and maybe still is) connection between people

and wolves, and that connection, which I think is similar to the bond between direwolves

or any wolves and humans in ASOIAF, is something I will focuse on in this video.

In legends, and myths and tales often there are a lot of variations, a lot of overlapping

of stories, so in this case we must take into account that sometimes in some stories and

customs of Slavic people – wolves, warewolves and vampires were the same creature.

In Montenegro and Dalmacia they actually called vampires wolves.

They believed that when a person rises from the grave he or she turns into wolf.

In some cases just the soul of the deceist may enter wolf.

That part of the belief is more closer to the warging ability in ASOIF and Game of thrones,

where, as it seems, person only takes control of the mind of the direwolf while their body

remains the same.

Wolf is In slavic folklore, in some oral naratives, related to, or even identified with death.

There is one naration from the middle of the 19th century in Lonja (Croatian Posavlje)

that describes how death comes upon sinners

When a [sinful] man is dying, death rushes to him on dragon's

wings; following it permanently are six dire hounds, hungry

like the grey wolves in the woods (…). When it arrives at the

house, it sits down on the fence and gapes like a vainglorious

wolf.

(…). The man gasps, his soul appears [from his mouth],

the hounds grab it, and in the sack it goes

There is great article on associations of wolves with death and the world of the dead

by Pieter Plas.

I will put the link in the description if you want to read it.

You can (although this one is a bit of a stretch) connect this Slavic associations of wolves

with death, with wolf dreams in Martin's series.

There, we find, usually Starks having dreams in which they are direwolves.

So far we havent seen all the Stark children using the warg ability, although, according

to HIM all the children have it to one extent or

another.

"I don't think this is necessarily a 'Stark' ability, though all the children have it to

one extent or another."

Bran and Arya are said to be the strongest wargs, Jon with them there of course.

It is unclear from all versions of the belief in Slavic mythology whether all humans have

a potential to become wolves after death.

Or is it reserved specially for sinners, as we found out from that earlier mentioned narrative.

In that case turning into wolf, or appearance of wolf as the death itself, was considered

as a sort of a punishment.

Where as in Game of thrones, when Starks are warging they usually do it, as it seems, to

connect with one another… or try to anyway Take this part for example from Clash of Kings

where Jon has a wolf dream

When he closed his eyes, he dreamed of direwolves.

(…) The forest was vast and cold, and they were

so small, so lost.

His brothers were out there somewhere, and his sister, but he had lost their scent.

He sat on his haunches and lifted his head to the darkening sky, and his cry echoed through

the forest, a long lonely mournful sound.

A few chapters later, Arya when she was trying to figure out how to escape harenhall, heard

the howl far far off, beyond the godswood and the haunted

towers and the immense stone walls of Harrenhal, from somewhere out in the world, came the

long lonely howl of a wolf.

Not only bond between brothers and sisters in the Stark family is important in the context

of their warging abilities, but also, I think, connection to the Old gods.

As we saw from that previous quote, In the godswood she found her broomstick sword

where she had left it, and carried it to the heart tree.

There she knelt.

Red leaves rustled.

Red eyes peered inside her.

The eyes of the gods.

"Tell me what to do, you gods," she prayed She was asking guidence from the old gods,

and after that in her sleep that same night, she could warg Nymeria for the first time.

After slow fading of the magic in that world, and almost being completely forgotten, Martin

had put, I believe, warging, and direwolves in general, as a sort of guardians of the

border between Old and New ways In a similar way, as it was analyzed by Ljubinko

Radenković in his investigation of the symbolic world model of South Slavic folk magic, wolf

in the believes of South Slavs is linked to the border between two worlds (the human and

the wild).

And as Radenković points out „deviant individuals who did not succeed in making the transition

to the other world can turn into him, as can those who have the magical power of metamorphosis

(...)"

Although there is no doubt that there are some differences between the old believes

of Slavic people and the world that GRRM created - the importance of wolves or direwolves,

and their connection with humans, included in both worlds, is something I found interesting.

Hope you will too.

That's all for now, thank you for watching.
