welcome to this week's movie math where
the martin luther king jr. holiday
weekend was a blood bath! and last
year things were perfectly
Pleasant look at this ride-along to
debut with 41 million the revenant
enjoyed a six percent old pulling in
another 37.5 million the force awakens
just a 22-percent dip are you know many
weekend weekend into its run with
another 3022 added look at that cop 341
37.5 and 33 and then I 13 hours the
Benghazi moving from michael bay
over with 19 points to you but that here
the top movie came in at 20 million
where is the word fairing one last year
came in at that number
what happened well I think this is a
perfect way to see how much the movie
industry has changed in just a year
oh it's so depressing ok alright so
we're very lackluster awards season this
year where it's really just the lala
land show very other very few other
fellows have gotten any kind of boost
and you know coming out of the Golden
Globes lot of land want every single
category was nominated in there really
what you know i would like a little bit
of action but they're holding their
holding the expansion of moonlight until
the Oscar nominations because they feel
they're going to get a little bit more
traction action will be a little bit of
a bigger deal so you'll see that allow
land business is doing well so that's
one problem the very bad awards season
this year that rotten tomatoes killed
movies did this year they're like one of
those pesticide ads stops moving from
their tracks and it's true I we're going
to look at the rotten committed scores
later or live by dying silence and blue
but I once did okay
not from martin scorsese film that live
by night who definitely spray with
rotten tomatoes then I know you guys
like to say a lot of you really don't
want to admit that movie star still
exist but as I always quote paulo minute
this is the second time today I've
quoted Paul Newman about this the right
actor in the right role is priceless and
last year you had
leonardo dicaprio and Kevin Hart doing
what they do best and they brought in
the money this year
you don't really have any star power in
play and that also TV has got very
aggressive this weekend we had efflux is
a series of unfortunate events you don't
drop the whole season me Pete over on
amazon and then also the young pop over
at HBO debuted on sunday night
ultimately it's been two days in a row
so did Sunday and Monday really taking
advantage of the holiday weekend so it
wasn't pretty but wait the top of the
box office does features three success
story so let's let's start out on a
positive note i have to pay his failures
this is the three-day top247 figured I
think that the four-day gets complicated
and not the percentages go artoo
inflated because you're comparing it to
three days the weekend prior so anyway
even though with a four-day holiday
weekend that supposed to make more
people want to go to the movie so anyone
who figures had an eight point six
percent hold oh my gosh that's amazing
last week we talked about that it would
be lucky to have someone from
twenty-five to thirty percent of hold
based on similar films to help the
butler and forty q had an eight percent
8.6 percent hold under can percent
that's amazing i think it benefited
partially from a lack of competition but
still this is really fantastic for
hidden figures it's already outgrowth
fences and it's also outgrowth speaking
of martin luther king jr selma ava
duvernay sound that also i think was not
quite the awards contended that many
hoped or thought it should be i haven't
figure he's getting non-peer in there
it's been very welcome sag awards so
that could meet speak well for Oscars
because the actors of the biggest group
of Academy voters itself is that quite
quite the awards contended I think and
many others think it should be but I
said I think well at wanna try to put
hopefully passing the century mark that
you know first test is successful first
badge of honor for a movie I'd also the
shows that like the help the butler and
42 always that one past the century mark
you know there's a certain type of
filming emerging i plug but you know I
wouldn't put the blind side in there
because the blind I really focus so much
on
sandra book but you know I felt that
appeal to both african-american
conversation audience says you know it's
a feel-good movie I mean you can
certainly see a certain type of movie
emerging their Hollywood does love it's
formulas and they're very good at
repeating them so you get seven figures
i think definitely fits in that category
but it's one of the stronger one of the
stronger of the group because of that
hole that host amazing
none of those three films enjoyed that
hold their law I'll and a huge golden
globes boots again won every single
category was nominated a number of
people watching or reading about the
awards ceremony today after said well I
got to see this thing now and see if
they get Lionsgate took advantage of the
heat and added 333 feeders putting an
almost 2,000 meters that's that's very
very solid it's almost time for a wide
release these days though anyway it's
awfully 3% jump man right
I have to talk about a catchy tune it's
up to 74 million domestic and a hundred
thirty two million worldwide now
ironically this could end up maybe
hurting wall and when it comes to the
best picture rates for the Oscars people
might feel well it has the Golden Globe
when it's got a wonderful box office a
hole that it can you know be proud of
and I'm sure it's gonna get some Oscars
I'm you know it's definitely make strong
contender for director for original
music right song
Ryan Gosling Emma Stone but picture more
light is a strong competitor with it and
the Academy might say well you know what
while and already had a in the Sun
moonlight needs boots
well I don't 14.6 million total yeah you
know historically the lower growth
movies have one of the day when it comes
to the best picture you know I'm there
exceptions of course but still this
works in moonlight favor so we'll see
what happens on lights going to again
expand after the Oscar nominations are
announced on Don week from today tuesday
January 24th so maybe it'll never gonna
catch up to lala land but still you know
that's an interesting thing to see all
the different factors that go into how
old r devotees decide where to cast
their vote then saying continues to do
very very well just a 33-percent drop
its fourth weekend it's actually passed
mawana domestically so that's a very big
12 moderate what actually for
illumination entertainment / universal
because well past my wanted domestically
it lags a hundred million behind wanna
overseas and the foreign box office so
marijuana is entire when it comes to
worldwide grossest for the year but
still that's an accomplishment for
saying and if any of you have been
pointing out to me it never reached
number one but it just hung in there at
number two and number three and it made
quite a bit of money now the horror
story is being of horror stories the
best performer amongst the new releases
was the by man never bet against or the
horror genre is incredibly potent it
almost always does well at the
box-office these movies are very
inexpensive to make just 7.4 million
dollar budget for the by man I and
people turn up there there are great but
I think Syfy's catching up in terms of
people's first movie and a break into
the biz but for another cabin in the
woods kind of sci-fi horror mix so I
guess that was like that
cutting-edge right up until 5i man if
it's a surprise but I choose surprising
that ended up being the best performer
of the new releases and then right after
that you can see the road one took a
little bit more of a tumble than the
force awakens at this stage of release a
world one is an expensive weekend and it
felt almost 40% but you know what
tomato tomahto i think that you know
world was going to get to be going to
join a billion dollars like literally
any day now and that's a success for
Disney and Lucasfilm why not a two
billion dollar movie watch that episode
you know it's a standalone to authorize
scandal but it says it's a prequel spin
off its not integral to the story going
forward it's not the first one back with
this new era of Star Wars and also i
think that there was no really strongly
you know they put out dinner so then
they took her back because they were
like that's not going over very well but
they never really i think if you were
pressed to say well who's the star of
one you have not only have a hard time
deciding who was fighting everybody
would give you a different
answer I think there are a number of
great performances there but it really
wasn't ensemble piece and ensemble
pieces are a little bit harder i think
of a wide so also i think there's a
little bit of a ball back from the force
awakens to some people think i'm not
going to fall for that twice and I think
that well hopefully number of people
discover how better how much better it
is in the force awakens on streaming and
patriots day I came in next
this is expected to be the best
performer of the new releases because I
don't know why because the Deepwater
Horizon be particularly well from the
same creative team mark wahlberg's
burning the camera peterburg behind it
but people felt patriots day was going
to hit this had a strange strange amount
of buzz you know when it first opened in
limited release always critics are like
always a big awards contender patriots
day behind best movies of the air i
think everybody was like what and it
never materialized in the bus just
couldn't get there so it didn't get
there with a warrant sweep and we'll see
what happens with the oscars and I
didn't get that with the box office
I think that mark wahlberg computer
bergen might want to consider stuff
working together they had with one
survivor financially didn't do well
awards season either even though it was
supposed to be a lone survivor forever
the movie where someone's girlfriend
watch step through the whole movie on
her giant iPad on facebook and he didn't
say anything to her but he was really
big scary guy so nobody said anything to
him
I alright so anyway I Deepwater Horizon
not a success in any capacity and even
though i like to all of these I haven't
seen pictures yet but i like both those
other movies I think although the
Patriots state subject matter might be a
tough sell that might be something that
you know something like slowly oh yeah
everything turned out great Patriots Day
of course is quite tragic and that might
be a movie that people just don't think
seems like a great night out and watch
their trucks this was really into
because paramount before 2016 ended
wrote off 415 million dollars to the
movie it couldn't possibly have ever
been as bad as that sent enough to be so
it ended up being like bad people got
monster trucks wasn't a total
embarrassment
even though it did open in seventh place
everybody should run up there who 450
million dollars to head off that
negative conversation then sleeveless
speaking of mega
conversation this is the lowest open for
jamie foxx's soloist back in 2009 that's
right the soloist the movie that you
forgot existed until i just mentioned it
so I been fortunate for Jamie Foxx boy
alright so i don't know how he's going
to recover from that I put on my I made
my green lantern less than Jamie Foxx's
I but now I think he'd be like I love to
do DC movie I mean I'm in the perfect
position to have to take that kind of
risk but I don't know if we can afford
the risk that underworld fell 55-percent
in its second weekend
oh that's that's bad and I know the
underworld awakening the previous
installments 51-percent next second
weekend but had a stronger starting
point so I think things do I look good
for the continuation of this franchise
for underworld six then rounding out the
top 10 is passengers which number of you
are very happy to see is doing nothing
worldwide I got a lot of tweets about
this over the weekend and even
domestically it's constantly close
catalyzing the close to the century mark
which again is that first badge of honor
the movie needs to succeed be seen as
the success of the box office but
worldwide 237 it costs 110 to make prior
to advertising because that doesn't
include advertising but just from a
budgetary perspective and had broken
even at this point so that's pretty good
and is often people over the weekend
some you know some article thing o
passengers is the most successful
original live-action film of the air
being a central intelligence and it's
like come on that's a lot of qualifiers
I don't think passengers anywhere what
it should have been but at least it's no
longer an embarrassment and I think that
so he can say that broke even
you know i think by the time everything
setting that will break even compare
totally including advertising and i
think it's going to do great on
streaming and I also think in like
hotels on airplanes who was going to
want to watch Chris Pratt and Jennifer
Lawrence I think sorry I'm sure is
contractually obligated jennifer
lawrence and chris pratt right she gets
top billing but I think that's where
they're going to really earn their money
they were painting seriously that was
discussed and so I think that's where
their star power will
payoff and I think eventually that film
will be a a moneymaker for sony then
oh we got to go outside of the top ten
for two of the other big movies of the
weekend and it's embarrassing live by
night couldn't even crack the top 10 and
that's playing in almost 3,000 meters
and had us really bad I that's a very
wide that's almost as wide as you can
get you know 4,000 is reserved for like
comic book movies and blockbusters and I
had a 33-percent of rotten tomatoes
which is just devastating now I do I
haven't seen the movie I don't know it's
really just that bad or if this is the
repercussions of being part of the BCE
you but you know Ben Affleck was you
know really a critical darling for quite
some time and all the sudden that has
evaporated
I also think part of the problem is the
the boardwalk empire effect you know you
know that kind of gangster in the 1920s
has already been very much put into pop
culture for years because the boardwalk
empire I think it's just really hard to
revisit that material because of that
then Martin Scorsese silence opened at
number 16 and this was an under thousand
meters really didn't go quite wide it
has an eighty-four percent on rotten
tomatoes for Scorsese that's pretty
damning i think the real problem here is
that it's a three-hour movie and it
didn't materialize during awards season
didn't get any nomination so you really
kinda need the golden globes etc of that
makes a go and your sag awards the
Writers Guild the directors or producers
guild nobody's vote batch for this movie
and I think that kind of three our
commitment you need someone to match
actually saw thousands thought I was
over the weekend
it's um it's like fun this it you got to
really commit you gotta really pay
attention but i found the film to
actually be pretty rewarding very very
interesting viewpoint on religion it's
been everything we can for religion but
with silence in the young poke
so anyway the young Pope jury's still
out on that as far as I'm concerned but
I think overall you take away here is
there are too many movies that are being
released
I think the media is no longer supported
the film media to work really hard i'm
not talking about movie critics and
talking about the articles written
about movies that are releasing and we
need to try to be like hey you should
see this movie and this is why maybe
this movie might be for you but I think
negative press rules these days role in
many different areas not just
entertainment but it's permeated the
entertainment media as well that also i
think movie theaters have become
increasingly a you know a bad experience
in terms of cleanliness the behavior of
other people in the audience and that's
a factor but also I think TV has become
extremely aggressive encounter
programming it used to be only small
movies counter program that TV has come
in they release it be released whole
seasons at once and they take out an
entire weekend and it's difficult out
there it's scary and this is I think
that's why I mean just think to yourself
and always will be coming out this
weekend that you didn't see how many
might have seen if it had been available
to you on streaming let's say two weeks
after release that would have been
probably for around fifty dollars but
think about it if you're a couple of
your family
I mean if you're just a couple or even
if you have some friends over you
already make your money back considering
you know the cost to get to the theaters
and also the time snacks all that stuff
I think people will really go for that
option thanks for this coming weekend
it's a tight race for number one between
the return of xander cage and the return
of my channel on who's going to see if
you can repeat his success that has
returned to form with the visit from
last year and this time with split with
james mcavoy so you can see it's a
neck-and-neck photo finish will be
looking at and then the fag and finally
comes out for Jeremy Renner i remember
reading an article just a couple of
weeks ago he was like everyone's being
promised me he was going to make the
founder awards contender and that did
not happen I don't know what's going on
Harvey Weinstein golden not materialise
awards contender why and got through the
cracks but Harvey Weinstein longer be
the heavyweight the Oscar heavyweight he
wants was the founder is expected open
with just six million so anyway that's
this week's movie math to thank you so
much for going over the box offices may
I hope you had as much fun as I did
I'm curious to hear your thoughts about
it down below as well as will you plan
to see this coming weekend and it
doesn't have to be one of the new ones
you can double back and save one of
these poor the suffering movies I feel
like one of those save that save the
whales you know
and like for just for just twenty
dollars you can say one of these movies
hey that's down below and you can check
out some other episodes right now
