The Mngwa, legendary big cat of Tanzania Big cats existing where they should not has
been a story that is told in many regions of many countries a myriad of large felines
have been spotted and photographed.
Tracks found and hair samples collected, even the remains of animals on which they have
preyed upon found.
We took a look at a few of these sightings in the video ……… Cryptids.
"IF" These monsters live?
But a recent story out of England has shown that these cryptid cats could now pose a real
threat to people and while researching this incident I found a new big cat one that I
was unfamiliar with and thought I would share.
So first let's take a look at the unfortunate soul who was attacked by a mysterious beast
in his own home.
And a strange African cryptid cat that is also said to have attacked people.
The Nunda or Mngwa.

The
British man in his eighties was sleeping when an animal of some kind sneaked in through
an open bedroom window.
This incident took place Thurnbry lodge Leicester, this area has a long history of mysterious
big cat sightings.
A woman captured the creature on camera while she played a few rounds of golf early one
Saturday evening back in July of last year.
Local newspapers have often reported witness stories of large black cats in the surrounding
countryside.
A list of these many incidents can be found on bigcats.org.uk as there are too many for
me to list in this video.
So back to our victim and a turn of events which may force local authorities to take
these sighting a little more seriously? this unlucky old man who wishes to remain
anonymous, something which is common for big cat sighting witnesses, the fear of ridicule
having them keep their identities secret, this has the unwanted effect of making many
think they are less credible.
But the witness in this report is the evidence, his documented injuries could be used to identify
the cat or creature that caused the the wounds.
In a number of pictures, you can see the man's hands and arms have been torn open, deep lacerations
covering his limbs which he must have raised toward the animal to protect his face.
The animal had managed to climb in through an open window and this lead the local councilor
for the area to advise all people keep their windows closed at night.
The man's family were shaken by the incident and in comments to the local newspaper they
expressed their concern over the animal still being on the loose.
Asking what would happen if this was to happen again and if this time it was a child that
was attacked.
Indeed a scary thought.
People have suggested on social media that the creature could be a dog, a panther or
even a raccoon.
there has been much online speculation as to what attacked the man with people putting
forward the idea that it was a raccoon, a creature just as foreign to the area as anything
else proposed , a feral dog and of course the panther which is often reported.
the wounds are most definitely from some kind of feline, if that feline is a large cat or
just a domestic cat which wondered into the man's room and was startled when the man
awoke and attacked , is a debate that is still going on online.
I would say that if it were a panther I would think the wounds would be fatal rather than
the deep cuts the man has shown, but I could be wrong.
Local police sergeant rob Merrill, tried to reassure the public by confirming the attack
was thought to have been carried out by a feral cat.
So this story sent me on a search for big cat sightings and this is when I stumbled
into one I had never heard of and it is very interesting.
I see some similarities with other types of cryptid creature out there.
This big cat originates Tanzania and is known as the Nunda or Mngwa.
First mentioned in a Swahili song from the year 1150 which also mentions the Lion (Simba)
the Leopard (Nsui) and the Mngwa as three different creatures.
A traditional Tanzanian folktale gives us a story in which a Sultan's youngest son
was sent out to hunt for the murderous cat, this after the beast had already taken the
lives of his three brothers and many other people who were part of the sultan's court.
This is when the story takes a bit of a comic twist, as it would seem the son killed just
about every type of animal found in the Tanzanian bush.
Each time mistakenly presenting them to his father only to be sent out on the mission
to find hunt and kill the Nunda.
Eventually, he does encounter a Nunda.
The beast is discovered sleeping under the shade of a tree.
The tale goes on to describe an animal that is the size of a donkey, has distinctive brindled
fur with some striping, huge claws, and enormous teeth.
Eyewitnesses have claimed that despite its huge size, the Nunda does not roar like a
lion or leopard, but purrs, just like an overgrown domestic cat.
As is normally the case in these folk stories the son kills the animal and makes a triumphant
return to his father.
This tale does however have some compelling supporting evidence for such a creature existing
an as of yet to discovered species of big cat hidden in the bush.
During the early 1920s and 1930s, a Native Magistrate of a small Tanzanian coastal village
called Lindi, Captain William Hichens had heard the stories and thought this to be just
another local legend that was until he had a face to face encounter with the feline cryptid.
He described the cat as being bigger than a lion with a unique greyish striped coat
something similar to your house tabby.
He had always considered it a myth until 1922 and his first hand sighting, he recalled his
story in an article on the mystery beasts of Africa.
His story is as follows: "In those days it was a common tradition for
native traders to leave their belongings in the village market overnight, this so to be
ready for the morning's trade.
The Native constable took turns with two others to guard the market on a four-hour watch.
This is when he went to relieve the midnight watch, he found the guard he was meant to
replace missing.
After a long search he discovered him, the man was terribly mutilated, and his body had
been dragged underneath a stall.
A European officer, assisted the shocked man it was obvious that the guard had been attacked
and killed by some animal - a lion, it seemed.
Evidence did however point to a different animal, in the victim's hand was a matted
mass of greyish hair, long hair like that of a lion's mane.
This hair had been pulled from the beast during the violent fight.
However lions were known to give the town a wide berth out of fear of the villagers.
Hichens was both shocked and greatly confused as to what was responsible for the man's
death- the local people of Lindi were neither.
They were convinced that this attack was the work of a Nunda, the old native governor of
the district went on record confirming that it was a Nunda which had carried out this
attack and several other attacks in the area.
Moreover, shortly afterwards two men informed Hichens that they had been passing by the
market on the night in question, and had been horrified to see an enormous brindled cat
leap out of the shadows and pounce upon the unfortunate man.
This is not the end of the story.
A couple of nights later, a second man met his demise to the same animal, and once again
in one of his fists a strange, brindled grey fur was found.
Over the following month, there were several more killings but despite the local polices
best efforts, the beast that was responsible avoided capture.
Jumping to the 1930s, there were more killings in Hichens's district.
One lucky survivor was an old, extremely experienced hunter, to whom lions and leopards were very
familiar beasts.
He stated adamantly that his attacker had been neither of these, but had instead been
a Nunda.
Footprints found were said to be characteristic of the Nunda, these resembling a leopard's
in shape, but as large as a lion's.
The Nunda is also known as the Mngwa, and is thought to inhabit temperate coastal forests,
those that know the animal say that it can be readily distinguished from both the lion
and the leopard - the two known species of big cat inhabiting this region of Africa.
The name 'Nunda' in Swahili translates into English as 'strange one', and according to
the people of Lindi and elsewhere along the seaward edge of Tanzania, the feline monster
is no myth.
There is another story of the beast comes from a Westerner living in the country.
Patrick Bowen said a Mngwa (Nunda) had carried off a young boy, and that he and another man
followed the tracks of the animal.
"The spoor we were following appeared to be that of a leopard as large as the largest
lion."
Bowen also noted that it was possible that some of the attacks attributed to other animals
like bears were in fact the work of the Mngwa.
Patrick Bowen, managed to obtain some fur left behind by this feline fiend after it
had once again claimed a human victim.
This is the point when we can speculate on this strange animal's identity.
Research gives four explanations to these killings.
The most down to earth of these claims that there was no Nunda.
Information contained in the publication Wild Cats of the World (2002) by Mel and Fiona
Sunquist, has significant bearing on the case she writes:
• "...witch doctors in the Singida area, in what was at that time Tanganyika [now Tanzania],
ran a lucrative extortion business in the early twentieth century by threatening to
turn themselves into lions and kill people who did not pay them.
Many people were murdered by young men dressed as lions, wearing lion paws as gloves on their
hands and feet.
These mjobo, or "lion men," reappeared in the same area in 1946, some twenty-five years
later, and 103 deaths were attributed to their activities.
Murders were made to look like the work of man-killing lions, and the common belief in
were-lions was exploited by secret societies."
This idea of lion men really captured my imagination as this is a topic I looked into in the video
linked above.
Assuming that the Nundais are a real beast and not lion men, there are three more options
to explore.
The most obvious being that there is a truly unknown species hidden in Tanzania's dense
forests.
The next idea is that it may be a large form of oddly-patterned leopard.
Believe it or not on occasion there has been the discovery of striped leopards, and the
Nunda's prints are said to closely resemble those of a leopard's, although they are of
a larger size.
The final most intriguing theory, has been put forward by veteran cryptozoologist Dr
Bernard Heuvelmans.
Author of the book "On the Track of Unknown Animals".
has suggested that the Nunda may be an undiscovered giant version of the African golden cat Caracal.
Normally these cats measure around 4.5 feet in length, they are native to the East and
West of Africa.
One of Africa's most elusive creatures but it is known to be a morphologically versatile
species of cat.
Colorings range from gold, through a wide range of reds, browns, and greys, to a black.
