-Well, you guys, between the Super Bowl

and the State of the Union, that's six hours of our lives

we'll never get back.

That's right. The State of the Union was tonight.

And I want to wish a speedy recovery to Nancy Pelosi,

who is recovering from biting her tongue all night.

But it was an historic night.

Trump gave his speech

in front of the most diverse Congress ever.

[ Cheers and applause ]

It was so diverse, Trump was like, "Oh, God.

The caravan is coming from inside the House!"

[ Laughter ]

Of course, Trump's State of the Union

was broadcast on every major network,

but a lot of other networks didn't air it at all.

Actually, some of the channels that didn't air the speech

released statements explaining their decision.

For example, HGTV released a statement saying,

"We didn't air the President's address because

we already know how to build walls."

[ Laughter ]

Up next, Bravo. They said they didn't air the address

because even the Real Housewives think that's too much drama.

The History Channel said, "We didn't air it because we aired

something more factual -- 'Ancient Aliens.'"

Nickelodeon said, "We didn't air the President's address

because we oppose his position on immigration.

We stand with Dora."

[ Cheers and applause ]

And finally MTV said, "We didn't air the President's address,

but we did air a 'Jersey Shore' marathon,

which is just as loud and just as orange."

[ Cheers and applause ]

When Trump showed up in the House and walked up the aisle,

one lawmaker tried to get him to autograph his hat.

Did you see that? Take a look at this.

-He's got people in that room who have already called for...

-He's got his Sharpie there.

Yeah, yeah, no.

Trump was like, "The only thing I'm stopping to sign are boobs."

What?

And for almost all of Trump's speech,

you could see House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Mike Pence.

Check these guys out. Yeah.

They look like two siblings

watching "Fifty Shades of Grey" together.

[ Laughter ]

And this went viral.

Check out the photo of Nancy Pelosi clapping at Trump.

[ Laughter ]

Pelosi was like, "You're never getting your wall!"

[ Cheers and applause ]

But while Trump spoke, one side of the aisle kept applauding

while the other side sat in silence.

Trump was thinking, "Well, it reminds me of my wedding day."

And listen to this. Since his last State of the Union,

eight members of Trump's cabinet have either quit or been fired.

And six more went out for cigarettes and never came back.

A lot of people are talking about this.

At one point, Trump criticized the Russia investigation.

He even used a rhyme. Listen to this.

-If there is going to be peace and legislation,

there cannot be war and investigation.

[ Laughter ]

-And he was like,

"If you want a President with orange color,

we must get rid of Robert Mueller.

[ Applause ]

I do not like green eggs and ham.

I do not like the Mexi-cans."

[ Laughter ]

I saw that pretty much all

of the Congressional Democratic women

wore white head to toe.

Take a look at that. Yeah.

In response, the governor of Virginia was like,

"Oh, sure, when they do it, it's okay."

[ Audience groans ]

[ Laughter ]

Even Trump's daughter Tiffany wore white.

The President was shocked. He was like,

"I can't believe she was invited."

And Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner was at the speech,

but when they showed him, he looked a little uncomfortable.

Watch this.

-...almost about 22 years... -Wow.

-...and had expected to be in prison...

-He looks like someone put their Ken doll in a sitting position.

[ Laughter and applause ]

It's nice to see the Elf on the Shelf

found a job in the off-season.

It's always interesting to see

who sits where during the State of the Union.

In case you missed it, during the broadcast,

we got a copy of the seating chart.

Take a look. First, here's the House Chamber. And here's Trump.

Next, here's where Nancy Pelosi sat.

And here's where Trump's Secret Service agent

to protect him from Nancy Pelosi.

Next, here are the leaders

of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

Here's an empty seat for the commander of the Space Force.

And finally here's where Trump sat Ivanka,

and here's where he sat Eric and Don Jr.

[ Laughter and applause ] Check this out.

"The Washington Post" reported that after he plays golf,

Trump likes to eat two chili dogs.

Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi were behind Trump thinking,

"Dear God, I hope he didn't golf today."

And, finally, the State of the Union

was supposed to be last week, but Nancy Pelosi stopped it

from happening during the shutdown.

Well, tonight you could tell that she wanted Trump

to know that the House is her domain.

Savannah Guthrie Gives Her Take on Donald Trump's State of the Union Address - Duration: 5:09.

-Wow. Wow. -What time is it right now?

-Oh, my Gosh. -I'm dying.

-You are breaking a record, I think.

-I am.

I didn't even know that this hour existed.

-Thank you so much for coming on.

-My pleasure.

-You're the expert.

I want your take on what we just saw.

-Well, what do you think? The State of the Union.

I mean, this is democracy in action.

Were you excited? Weren't you excited, everybody?

-I was excited, yeah. [ Cheers and applause ]

Like an hour into it, then I was less excited.

-Then you were like, "Mm..." -Okay, yeah.

-Well, you know, I mean, this is, like, one of the

great things that our country does.

And I think, you know, this year, we had a little suspense,

like a reality show.

We didn't know if we were going to have the State of the Union

because of the government shutdown.

We all know what happened there. It was a week delayed.

And this is the first time the president has addressed

Congress and it be a divided Congress.

And you really -- I mean, honestly,

everything was written all over the room,

because you had Nancy Pelosi

literally hovering over the president,

which is basically what's going to happen

for the next couple of years, with the Democrats

hovering over this administration --

not only in terms of investigations and legislation,

but also in terms of the 2020 election,

because, in Washington,

they're always running for the next election.

-Whoa. Interesting. Yeah, of course.

I thought -- What were the big takeaways?

-Well, I mean, the State of the Union

has a little something for everybody,

but I always I think of it like it's like you have a budget.

You know, you have a buck to spend.

How much do you spend on any given topic?

So, if you look at it like that, the president

spent a lot of his money on immigration tonight.

I mean, he talked about immigration, the wall.

He talked about a crisis at the border

is the way he portrayed it, for more than any other subject,

more than he talked about the economy, more than education,

more than healthcare.

And I think that really shows that

he's talking about being bipartisan,

he's talking about working together,

but when it came down to policy, he's sticking to his guns.

And that's the very thing

that, of course, our government just shut down over.

That's the fight that Congress is in right now.

So if you want to get to read the tea leaves a little bit

about what's going to happen in the next few days,

are we going to get a deal?

Are we going to have another shutdown?

Is he going to declare a national emergency?

There was nothing the president said tonight

that would make you think he's in the market for a deal

or to be conciliatory.

So, right now, it feels like

we might be headed for another big showdown.

-Like a stalemate again? -Yeah, it looks like it.

Isn't Washington great?

-Wow! It's just fascinating to me.

I thought the one thing I enjoyed

was when everyone started chanting "unity"

and they all stood up together, both sides of the room.

And I was like -- I thought that was a good America moment.

-You know what? There were a few grace notes.

I thought -- Well, first of all, you know,

the president always invites guests that are

always very moving, and he had Holocaust survivors

and some of our veterans from D-Day.

It's the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

And, I mean, how can you not look at our soldiers

and people freed from concentration camps

and not, you know, have that moment of patriotic pride.

that it was the Americans who liberated them.

So that was an incredible moment.

I thought it was great when -- It actually was a funny moment,

because you had all of these women

who are now serving in Congress, newly elected to Congress.

A lot of them chose to wear white,

so they really made an appearance there,

and you could really see them.

And there was a part where the president starts talking about

"Hey, you know, the unemployment rate

for women has really gone down."

And the women, the female members of Congress,

most of whom were Democrats, stand up and cheer,

because they're like, "Yeah, that's right.

We got jobs."

-That's right. -You know?

And the president looked --

It was funny, because he was like, "Wait.

That wasn't the part where you're supposed to stand up."

-Yeah, he actually said that.

He goes, "You're not supposed to do that."

-Yeah, he was like, "Wait."

-"You're not supposed to stand up."

-You say it just like him, too. -Thank you. Yeah, it's eerie.

Yeah, I know -- it's odd.

-No, but it was funny, because, actually,

a couple paragraphs later,

he was going to give them their moment.

He said, "Congratulations to all

the women who were elected to Congress."

So he was like, "You jumped the gun on me."

-Yeah. He was like, "Don't sit down yet."

-Yeah. But, you know, I think those are the moments

that so many Americans wish there were more of,

you know, rather than divisive topics.

There were a lot of hot-button topics.

I think they love when we act like Americans

and we don't act like we belong to any particular party.

-There's a couple of --

Nancy Pelosi gave us a couple of good faces.

-She did.

-Like, all of a sudden, she's like...

-I know.

We didn't want her to have a poker face.

I liked when she was, like, kind of telling the --

Because there were little moments

where people would grumble or boo, and she was like, "No,"

which reminds me of, like, when my kids are at church,

and I'm like, "Eh!

No. Keep it down."

Yeah, she was just -- And you could tell she wanted to --

She's an institutionalist.

I mean, it means something to her.

She doesn't want people to act like it's a wild party,

yelling and booing and that kind of thing.

She was trying to say to her members,

"Keep it cool, respect."

-Yeah. Speaking of respect, I respect you.
