How to Hide Your YouTube Subscriber Count in 2019 [New Method] - Duration: 3:03.
- When you tell people you have a YouTube channel,
one of the most common questions asked is,
"Oh, how many subscribers do you have?"
And the answer may be, none of your flaming business!
VidIQ.
- [Woman] VidIQ.
- VidIQ.com.
When you are logged in to YouTube,
you should see your channel logo
in the top right-hand corner of most YouTube screens.
If you click on that,
you have the option to go to YouTube studio.
This is currently in beta,
but will become the standard as 2019 progresses.
This is your homepage, or dashboard,
on the new creator studio,
and in order to hide subscriber counts from the public,
you click on the settings button
in the bottom left-hand corner here.
From this pop-up, click on channel, followed by advanced,
and you should see a check box here that says
display the number of people subscribed to my channel.
So, this is what it currently looks like on a watch page.
And if I un-tick this box and save it,
this is what it looks like now.
Remember that hiding your subscriber count
will also affect your channel page
as well as search results, where your subscriber count
will no longer be shown to the public.
So, that is how you hide your subscriber count.
The burning question now is why would you do this?
The common opinion is that having a visible subscriber count
can either add or take away value from your channel.
A lot of video creators with smaller channels,
say, less than a hundred subscribers,
are worried that viewers will be
immediately switched off from their content
because they don't have a perceived audience
watching their content already.
And we can open up this question to you, the viewer.
When you watch a video,
and you see a channel with lots of subscribers,
would that convince you more to subscribe to their channel
than content from another video creator
which is just as good, but has a tiny number of subscribers?
Everybody, from an ego point of view,
could understand why, to begin with,
you might want to hide your subscriber count.
However, by default,
subscriber counts are displayed publicly on YouTube.
So, when that is hidden, that is a conscious decision
from the video creator to hide those stats from the public,
and that always raises suspicion.
From a personal point of view,
I've never been afraid of hiding my subscriber count,
whether it was zero, a hundred, a thousand,
or a hundred thousand.
After all, every video creator starts at zero
and ends up somewhere.
And after a few years of making videos,
and when you've built up your channel,
you'll realize what a immaterial number that was
when you were first starting out your channel.
It's all part of a YouTube journey.
I'd love to hear your general thoughts
on the subscriber count discussion, speaking of which,
it would be absolutely criminal
if you did not click on this button for vidIQ
because we've got a lot more beginner's tips just like this.
If you want to take your YouTube channel to the next level,
then make sure to download vidIQ.
It will help you research YouTube, analyze videos,
audit your own channel, and take actionable steps.

Becky G Chats Booty and Performs Sin Pijama LIVE #LostinMusic - Duration: 11:50.
Welcome to Sony's Lost In Music.
This week we're coming to you from the stunning Sony Hall right here in New York City.
That's right we're going to be joined by the incredible pop artist...
Becky G!
You know what time it is, it's time for your weekly news update.
That's right we got some big movie news for you today because actor Gina Rodriguez
is starring in her first ever leading lady role in the action-packed cross-border thriller,
Miss Bala.
Now the film made it a point to hire 95% Latin American and Mexican cast and crew
which is pretty awesome and it is in theaters now.
Yeah I can't wait to see that movie, I'm also super excited cuz it's about to be the Grammys.
Congrats to Mark Ronson, LSD and Travis Scott who've all been nominated.
Also congrats to Camila Cabello, Bring Me The Horizon and Miguel.
Also H.E.R has been nominated for not one or two or three or four but five nominations.
That's incredible, I love her music so much
I wish she could just come and perform on our show.
Er Will, guess what?
What's up?
She's gonna be on the show next week.
Oh my God, that's what's up.
That was your weekly news update.
Alright everybody let's make some noise for Becky G.
What a welcome!
How are you my girl?
I'm good, thank you so much.
Welcome to Lost In Music, our first one at Sony Hall.
Hey hey, I feel special, first one!
Now first of all I wanted to say congratulations on LBD.
Thank you.
Your latest single, which means...
Little black dress, yes.
Okay so talk to us a little bit about this little black dress song.
Little black dress is vibey it's very urban influenced it has a little bit of the Spanish
flavor that I kind of created...
I created this formula right, in my Spanish music and I was like, I gotta bring this over
to my English music. And so we kind of blurred the lines a little
and kind of did a little bit of this with the song.
Nice.
Yeah.
It's cool that you mention blurring the lines is there a certain vibe that you get when
you sing English versus a certain vibe that you get when you sing Spanish
and how do you bring those two things together?
I mean I always have considered myself 200% right?
I don't say I'm 50% Latina 50% American.
Like, I'm a 100% proud to be from Inglewood you know, born and raised here in the States
and obviously from LA which is a very mixed cultured place but also 100% proud to be Latina.
And so the culture in itself has always inspired me from a musical perspective especially.
And so I think that really comes through in my Spanish music because although I started
off not speaking it so well, it always was very natural for me to sing in Spanish and
the fact that I've had probably the biggest success that I've experienced in my career
in my Spanish music, it means so much to me and now that I get to bring that formula over
to my English music I just feel like my most authentic self now,
and so it's been an amazing journey for sure.
Yeah, it does feel like you been on such an evolution, especially from back in the day
to now seeing you doing a song like Booty which is like, pretty racy and hot and sexy.
Yes.
I watched that video and I was like "Oh my word!"
You're like, "Hey Becky!"
There she is all dipped in gold, shaking it!
Let's go!
Does it feel freeing to get up and just like, do your thing like that?
So my creative heart is the happiest it's ever been in a very long time and I haven't
been able to say that out loud so it feels really good to know I'm doing it and I'm on
my way back to it, so it is nice.
Sin Pijama is one of my favorites, just cuz it's so great to see you
with another Latin female
cuz you have done tons of collaborations with dudes.
Do you have your eye on any female singers for the future?
So many of them, there's so many of them and it's so amazing to me like, when you get to
work with other artists I think for me is what really inspires me to keep going because
I see that there are other people who are going through the same things who I can relate
with and when I met Natti, a fellow like, badass girl in this industry it was like,
the chemistry was instant.
Like we were on the same page from the moment we met, we actually met on the set of the
music video which not a lot of people know.
And that could have gone a lot of different ways like let's be honest because there's
not a lot of females in the industry, I think there's this perception
that a lot of women are pit against each other.
Right?
Cuz it's like, there's only room for one.
And I've never looked at it that way and when I met Natti and she had that same perspective
it was like, we're going to take over!
There's video, behind the scenes video of us just high-fiving we got so giddy
cuz we were like, this is it!
Like, we know something is going to happen with this song.
And it obviously went on to do amazing things and continues to grow every single day
so we're really proud of it.
Now it is almost Valentine's Day.
Ooh is it?
I'm like what day is it today?
I didn't even know.
It's next week. You got any plans?
You and your boo?
Me and my boo?
I mean, we both work so much and staying home and watching movies and eating chocolates,
which hopefully he lets me cuz you know he's an athlete, he's all about that healthy lifestyle.
But yeah, I think a day at home in our new place
and we'll just like watch movies, that sounds good.
Congratulations on your new spot.
Thank you, thank you so much.
That's exciting.
That's really really cool.
So we've done tons of Sony Lost in Music episodes in our pop-up space in New York City.
Yeah, we've had everybody from A$AP Ferg to CNCO to MØ to Tove Styrke, it's been crazy.
Hey. Let's go.
Yeah, but this is the first time that we've done it in Sony Hall
which is just off of Times Square in the heart of New York City.
Yeah, we're super happy you're here because this is a really dope venue.
This place was kind of a collaboration between Sony and Blue Note, they came together to
sort of really keep the classic look of the venue but Sony also added this super crazy
Hi-Tech audio equipment.
The 360 Reality Audio which is just like a complete immersive audio experience.
And this is the only place in the world that has his cool audio tech.
So what is it like for you, you know, being able to take the stage and engage with that?
In my experience of the 360 I got to hear every single part of this song whether it
was the beat broken down from different speakers and then being able to hear the background
vocals over here and then the ad libs over here and then the lead vocals over here
it was like, I couldn't escape it!
It was like literally it was all around me and it was like... it was kind of life changing,
I got goosebumps!
I was like this is amazing it's like when you're mixing and mastering a record for the
first time you want it to be perfect.
And the fact that fans can now literally get that exact experience direct to their ears
is the coolest thing ever.
Just like they've heard it like you heard it in the studio.
Right.
So you are going to reimagine a track on stage for us today.
What are you going to do?
I'm gonna do a little bit of an acoustic situation just because I feel like I don't get to do
that very often and I like breaking it down and I like being able to talk to everybody
and kind of gage them and look in their eyes and ask them how they're doing and then we
jump into a song that they are familiar with - but it's quiet enough to hear them
and how they're reacting.
And there's only a couple of instruments.
We're gonna have the cajón, we're gonna have the guitar, we're gonna have the vocal.
It's like the way it's going to be separated into the speaker system
is going to be pretty awesome.
That's awesome, we can't wait to see you do your thing on stage.
It's gonna be incredible.
Thank you so much for joining us.
Let's get it!
Are you ready?
Are you sure?
Well then let's go.
Thank you New York!
Shout out to Becky G for giving us a killer performance.
Join us next week at Sony Hall where it'll be our final show.
What better way to celebrate than a crazy performance by H.E.R.
Now the tickets are sold out, but if you want to check out her performance and our interview,
or in fact any of the Sony Lost in Music shows, then you know what to do.
Just hit up Sony.com/lostinmusic
See you next week.

Pomodoro Technique Explained: How to Stay Focused Using the Pomodoro Technique - Duration: 12:08.
Hey, everyone, Megan here from meganminns.com,
and today I'm gonna share with you
how to use the Pomodoro Technique
to stop procrastinating and stay focused.
(upbeat music)
I've been using the Pomodoro Technique
for several years and almost every single work day
because it really helps me avoid distractions,
stay focused, and also accurately assess
how much I can get done in a single day.
It also really helps me get started on a task
when I just feel a ton of resistance and don't wanna do it.
It helps me stop procrastinating and get some work done.
So what is the Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique is a productivity strategy
where you work for 25 minutes straight undisturbed
and even take a five minute break afterwards.
Each 25 minute session is called a Pomodoro.
So one 25 minute session equals one Pomodoro.
And after you've done four Pomodoros in a row,
so you've done 25 minutes
with a five minute break four times,
it's recommended that you take a little bit longer
of a break, maybe 15 minutes or 30 minutes,
and give yourself a little bit of a rest.
This is based around the idea that if you work
for 25 minutes straight without any distractions,
then you will actually end up getting work done faster
and more efficiently
even though you're taking those five minute breaks.
But now I wanna show you
how to actually use this simple technique in your day
to stop getting distracted and stay focused
so you can get more done.
I find that the Pomodoro Technique is the most powerful
when you actually plan out your Pomodoros in advance.
Now, I love to do this the night before,
and I actually have a whole video
on how I plan my day the night before,
and I talk about Pomodoros in that video as well.
But it can be the same day.
It can be right before you sit down to do a work session.
Either way, if you just take a few minutes
to plan in advance,
you are going to get the most bang for your buck
out of doing the Pomodoro Technique.
So what I like to do is look at my day on a calendar,
see what meetings and appointments
and events are already scheduled and committed to,
and then see how many Pomodoro sessions
I can actually fit in in my work day.
So I will really do this on Google Calendar.
I'll drop in Pomodoro 1, Pomodoro 2, Pomodoro 3
and really start to map out
where my longer breaks are gonna be,
but also how many Pomodoros does
that really leave me with in the day?
You might think you have 16 Pomodoros to do in a day,
but the reality is you probably don't have that many.
So this is a great first step
because I get to see really tangibly
how much time I have in the day
to get work done without distractions.
Then the next thing I do is I actually look at my task list,
my to-do list for the day,
and I start breaking those into the Pomodoros.
So if I have three Pomodoros in the morning for a meeting
and I pick out my most important tasks
and guess how long they're gonna take,
I will assign them Pomodoros.
So some tasks might take longer than one Pomodoro,
so I will actually block out
maybe three Pomodoros back to back,
all to work on creating a video script or recording a video.
Now, it's okay if you don't know
how long something is actually gonna take you to do.
That's one of the main reasons I love the Pomodoro Technique
is because you start to learn.
By using this technique and guessing
how long something is going to take you,
you'll actually very quickly see
if it takes you longer or less time.
And it really allows you to learn over time
how long things take you to complete.
So for now, just guess based on your experience,
based on how quickly you think you can work that day.
You might have historically just said you were gonna work
on your blog post for the whole day,
but instead you might say, okay,
I'm gonna try to get the entire blog post done
in three Pomodoros,
and you'll map it out and you'll base your day around that.
And then when you sit down to do it,
you'll either work a last faster (laughs)
because you have a time constraint,
or you'll realize it really takes four Pomodoros
or longer or less,
and then you can adjust your plan next time.
Either way, you're starting to learn
how long things take you,
which is just ultimately gonna make you better
at planning and using the Pomodoro Technique going forward.
I also love using the Pomodoro Technique
when I have a really full to-do list
because you can very quickly see
where you've overcommitted and what you need to change.
You might look at the day you have planned
and see that you can just not get all of your to-dos done,
and it gives you a chance to reorganize things in advance.
So either you realize you need
to work a little bit longer that day,
maybe you need to reschedule a meeting,
or maybe you just need to reprioritize your to-do list
and reset your expectations and let people know
if things need to be shuffled around.
One of the simplest and easiest ways
to actually do this planning besides Google Calendar,
which is why I do on a day-to-day basis,
I also use and love the Productivity Planner.
The Productivity Planner is based
around the Pomodoro method.
So what you'll see, let me flip to a day.
I'll have screenshots or a link to this planner
beneath this video if you wanna see better closeup shots.
But basically, see if this'll focus,
it allows you to pick your top priority tasks for the day
and then guess how long it's gonna take you.
I think it's right here.
You'll put in how many Pomodoros you think it's gonna take,
and then you'll fill in the circles
as you complete your Pomodoros,
and then you'll write down how long it actually took you.
So when I first started using the Pomodoro Technique,
this was a huge asset, because like we were talking about,
that reflection piece is so important
and valuable in this process
that I was really easily able to see on paper (laughs)
where I was off on how long I thought something would take
and how long it actually took.
So I love using the Pomodoro Planner,
and I still use it, especially on busy days.
So there will be more information on this
below this video if you're curious,
but it's one of my favorite resources
if you're using the Pomodoro Technique.
So those are the basics of how I like
to use the Pomodoro Technique to get more done,
but to really (laughs) do this well,
I have a few tips I wanna share with you
to making your Pomodoros the most effective
and actually getting the most out of this strategy.
So the first essential piece
of this puzzle is cutting out distractions.
If you sit down to work for 25 minutes
and allow yourself to get distracted,
you haven't really done a full Pomodoro
and you're going to see that in your outcome
in your results from the day.
Nothing should get in your way
and distract you from your work,
so definitely make sure you're on airplane mode
or do not disturb on your phone,
and also close any tabs and windows and applications
that you do not need open.
Only have up and open on your computer or on your table,
wherever you're working, what you need for the task at hand.
Another essential piece of cutting out distractions
for me is wearing noise-canceling headphones.
I actually have mine right here.
They are essential to staying focused for me
when I'm doing a Pomodoro Technique
because I can so easily get distracted
by the noises around me.
Since I work from home,
that could be dogs, that could be anything.
So by wearing those noise-canceling headphones,
I really easily zone out and get focused on my work,
and it kind of gives you a more holistic approach
to avoiding distractions besides just muting your phones.
Another tip is to have a place to capture ideas.
I don't know if you've ever been in this situation,
but you're really in the zone working on something
and out of the blue you get a question or an idea
or something you wanna research,
and it can totally throw you off
and send you down a rabbit hole if you're not careful.
So I actually like to have a journal next to me,
a notepad, a sticky note, preferably not a digital note,
because I find that's easier to get distracted.
But whatever works for you.
Either way, have a designated place
that while you're focused,
you can jot down any of those questions or action steps
or to-do items that pop up while you're working,
and you can tend to them later
when you're not trying to get this focused work done.
So definitely have a place to capture those ideas.
I want you to be able to reference them later,
but I don't want you to go down the rabbit hole
while you're trying to do this focused work.
Another key part of the Pomodoro Technique
is actually taking those breaks.
I have so often been in the zone for 25 minutes,
come up to a break, and skip it, which to each his own,
but in my experience that means
that the next 25 minutes are usually subpar work.
I maybe have five more minutes in me where I'm in the zone
and something happens and I fall prey to getting distracted
or I realize I need to go to the bathroom or get a drink.
And because I didn't take that five minute break
when I planned on it, I end up kind of trying
to do another 25 minute session
and usually peter out within a few minutes.
So in my experience at least, really taking those breaks.
Now, if you decide you wanna work in different increments,
totally make it your own.
But whenever you decide you are taking a break,
really stop what you're doing, move around.
Don't just sit at your desk and do other tasks.
Really take that full break
so that you can have a really productive
next 25 minute session.
This also goes for those longer breaks.
I really believe that
to be a happy, healthy, productive worker,
you need to take some longer breaks in your work day.
So even if you've got a jammed to-do list,
make sure you throw in at least a 30 minute break for lunch,
maybe a few 30 minute breaks throughout the day
to get some fresh air, to move around, to change locations,
because that is how you're going to stay healthy
and happy while you're working.
Another tip for you is to actually use a timer.
So I have totally been guilty of sitting down
to do a Pomodoro and making a note of what time it was
and then getting in the zone and working.
And not only do I have no idea how far I am in the Pomodoro,
I also forget what time I started,
and the whole thing loses its entire structure
and I have no idea how long I really worked on something.
And especially if you're new
to using the Pomodoro Technique,
you wanna leverage a timer to make it easier for you.
So you can definitely use the timer
on your phone if you want.
You can use an app, there's plenty.
I'll link to a few below this video that you can use,
either on your phone or on your desktop
to help log and track some of those Pomodoros.
Or you can use a physical timer,
which I don't have it with me,
but I used to use a physical kitchen timer all the time.
It very recently died, (laughs) so I haven't been using it.
I miss it.
But I found that using a physical timer,
it was really helpful and tangible
and made it where I didn't get distracted
checking on the time,
but I could kinda see where I was at at a glance.
After you've been using the Pomodoro Technique for awhile,
I want to encourage you to customize it.
So I mentioned this a minute ago,
and I actually still use and love the 25 minute
and five minute break increments,
but I have talked to several people
who really like longer sessions.
They can do 45 minutes with a 15 minute break,
or maybe they like 30 minutes with a 10 minute break
or still a five minute break.
I wanna encourage you to make it your own.
So if you've been trying the 25 minutes for awhile
and you're realizing that you are always in the zone
at 25 minutes and you feel like you're cutting yourself off,
then experiment with a different length Pomodoro.
I think it's more about the structure in place
than the actual time limits themselves
as long as you're still giving yourself a break.
So whatever your Pomodoro is,
make sure you have a break of some kind after each Pomodoro
and potentially a longer break
after a series of Pomodoros as well.
I wouldn't encourage doing this right out the gate.
I would love for you to try the 25 minutes at first.
But I want you to work in a way that works for you,
so I do believe the Pomodoro Technique structure can work,
even if you adjust the exact minute length of each Pomodoro.
So that is how you can use the Pomodoro Technique
to stay focused, stop procrastinating, and get more done.
I have mentioned a few different apps and resources
and some that I haven't specifically named in here
that I will link below this video.
So if you wanna know exactly what headphones I use
or get a link, I'm looking for them,
for my blue light blockers, which I think are essential
if you're doing a lot of computer work,
or any other of my favorite resources
for doing an effective Pomodoro,
just check the links below this video
and you will see them all there.
So now you understand how to use the Pomodoro Technique,
but if you want to get more done,
you really do need to have a plan for your day
like I mentioned at the beginning.
So that's why I wanna offer you guys
my free Daily Planner Printable.
You can enter your information in the link below this video
and get that straight to your inbox right now
and start using it to plan your day more effectively
and integrate it with your Pomodoros.
But now I wanna hear from you.
Have you ever use the Pomodoro Technique
or maybe another similar productivity strategy
to get more work done?
I'd love to hear from you in the comments below.
Share your experience or your best tips,
and I can't wait to chat with you down there.
And if you thought this video was helpful,
please be sure to hit the like button,

I'll see you in the next one.
Stop procrastinating.
Oh my God.
Oh no, the light's shifting.
Could you tell?
Why do I keep thinking that's gonna taste better?
I'm taking... (dog barking)
Cool, I love having a dog.
Ugh.
Ugh, this tastes so gross.
Do I look smart?

Jaw-dropping Thailand in 3D VR180! Ancient temples, markets and more - Justin's Journey's #04 - Duration: 11:16.
- Welcome to Justin's Journeys, Thailand.
Put on your Google Cardboard or VR headset
for the full 3D experience or just watch on your device
like you are anyways.
I've known Aaron since high school,
but this was our first international trip together.
Alright Aaron, what are you excited about for this trip?
- The food.
(laughter)
- Just the food?
- The food, the people, visiting friends.
- We disembarked via Delta,
from the Tom Bradley International Terminal in Los Angeles
and if anyone from Delta is watching, please sponsor me.
The 13 hour 13 minute flight actually went pretty quick
thanks to an impressive collection of new documentaries.
I liked the Mr. Rogers one.
Our transfer was in Shanghai.
This is a huge, spacious area here.
- This goes forever, holy crap.
- Yeah, it's pretty intense.
China Eastern had packed us into a tiny bus
since there was no jet way to speak of.
The orange sodium vapor lights and chilly weather
made the whole scene totally surreal.
- You walk like, close under the plane,
take a photo back home, you'd be going to jail.
- Yeah.
- Despite the lax rules around photography,
the flight was comfortable and the food,
simple, but decent.
- Welcome to Thailand.
- We arrived in Thailand about 5 hours later,
and met up with Videl, Aaron's buddy.
- Alright, it's day one, hour one
and now I'm going out into that.
I have no idea what to expect.
Walking outside was immediately overwhelming.
One of the first things I noticed was the organization
of the power lines of which
there seems to be very little.
How in the heck does this city function?
Well, they seem to make it work.
I wanted to avoid the roads as much as possible
since surprisingly, Thailand has the second highest
road traffic totality rate in the world,
second only to Libya.
So, we took the BTS, a sleek, fast, and modern
rail system in the city.
Our first day trip in Bangkok
was the Jatujak weekend market, also known as JJ Market.
It has more than 15,000 stalls and 11,500 vendors
selling just about anything you could imagine
including cool shirts like these and of course, food.
- What are some weird things you've already
seen at the market?
- Levi 501 jeans for 3 bucks.
- What are those normally, 501 jeans?
- When you get them at the Levi's store, what are they,
like 70-100 dollars a piece?
- So they're probably not legitimate.
- Oh, absolutely not.
It's all fake.
- What?
We followed the flat hustle and bustle of the market
with something a lot more vertical,
the Octave rooftop hotel and bar.
I got the Chiang Mai drink, sipped,
and sat to watch the sunset.
We are currently at Terminal 21,
which is one of the many malls here in Bangkok.
And they're not just like, normal malls
that you see in America where it's like one floor
and really sad and no one's there.
No, these malls are completely frigging insane.
The concept of Terminal 21 is market streets of the world.
It's decorated based on well known streets and cities
such as Rome, Paris, Tokyo, London, and Istanbul.
This mall is also really tall and has the longest
escalators in Thailand.
If you're scared of heights, don't look down.
After Terminal 21, we decided to make things weird
with NBK Center.
Less upscale, and more random.
- It's a ridiculous place full of knock off electronics
and it's amazing.
- Wait, this is a tiny phone?
- It actually has a screen?
Oh my gosh.
- And use a dual sim card, very nice phone, sir.
- Does it have apps?
- Not have apps, sir.
- Okay, okay. Okay, okay, that's cool though.
- We transfer malls yet again to Siam Discovery
so I could find my precious mango sticky rice.
Siam Discovery is certainly quite a bit more upscale
as you can see.
I love the Power Mall store.
So full of fancy electronics.
The top floor featured one of the nicest movie theaters
I've ever seen.
I mean, it just looks like a fake movie theater
you'd see in a VR loading screen.
I mean, just listen to the music.
That's totally loading screen music, right?
Comment below if you agree with me.
Another perk, the theaters are all quite different
and when you pick your showtime, you can also see
the different types of theaters on the screen.
Our next day, we got a little more cultural.
- Aaron and I are here, it's raining.
- Yeah it is.
- We're gonna see some, what is this?
Reclining Buddha?
- No that's the other one.
This is the Grand Palace.
- The Grand Palace is a complex of buildings
at the heart of Bangkok.
The palace has been the official residence of the kings
of Siam and later, Thailand, since 1782.
It's one of the most popular tourist attractions
in Thailand but I think the rainy weather
actually helped us quite a bit.
It was pretty chill.
Construction began in May of 1782.
Now these guys were actually pretty desperate for materials
and didn't have a lot of money
so the palace was initially built entirely out of wood.
Obviously, what you're seeing now is wood
because to find more material for these constructions,
the king at the time ordered his men to go
upstream, to the old capital,
we'll see that one in just a minute,
which was destroyed during the war a couple years before
so they dismantled those structures
and removed as many bricks as they could find.
All that stuff was then ferried down the river
by barges, where it was eventually built
into the walls of Bangkok and the Grand Palace itself.
And here's a big touristy Buddha.
Felt a lot to me like being at Notre Dame
- just too many people to really appreciate anything,
but hey, it's big and it looks cool in VR.
Shiny and stuff.
We wanted to make sure to take the local ferry
instead of one of the dumb tourist ones.
The local boats are a heck of a lot cheaper
and you don't need the whole spiel of the tourist ones.
Sweaty Justin here.
I'm about to take a train to ancient ruins
and if there's one thing I like, it's ancient ruins!
- The train ride from Bangkok to Ayutthaya,
according to several sites we found,
was considered a pretty adventurous choice
but I love mass transit and our second class seats
provided us a decent view
and most importantly, air conditioning.
- So we're at the back of this little tuktuk
and we got absolutely tiny compared to
the rest of these normal sized components.
I'm finally riding the tuktuk.
- Ayutthaya historical park was probably
my favorite thing I encountered on our trip,
and as you can see, it's just epic.
The Kingdom of Ayutthaya lasted from 1350 until 1767.
The ruler had the Ayutthaya temples built on an island
surrounded by three rivers
- this connected the city to the sea.
It was strategic since the water would protect the city
from both invaders, and also flooding.
It developed into one of the largest urban areas
in the world.
It became a hub of diplomacy and trade,
as merchants from all corners of the globe flocked here.
At its peak, Ayutthaya had around one million inhabitants.
When European traders returned home,
they described Ayutthaya as the grandest city
they had ever seen.
- It's a bunch of different little parks
and each one is a different temple area
out of a whole bunch of different things
and it is really cool.
Really overwhelming just how much is around here.
Just the pattern of it all, it's incredible.
These little bricks.
But unfortunately, the good times don't last forever.
I'm sure you can tell that a lot of areas
look badly scorched.
Well, the Burmese invaded Ayutthaya in 1765
and took the city over after two years of bloody fighting.
They stole the kingdom's treasures, enslaved the people,
and burned many of the temples to the ground.
The ruins of Ayutthaya temples were restored
centuries later and they received
UNESCO World Heritage status in 1991.
We took a scenic seat at a nearby cafe
and I had some of the best dang pad thai I've ever had
in my life.
Yeah, I know it's a pretty basic tourist thing to order,
but I hadn't had any yet, come on!
- There are few things I love as much in this world
and drinking out of a fresh coconut is one.
- As the city unfurled behind our tiny tuktuk,
I realized this would be one of my last looks at Thailand
- a moment worth savoring.
Even though we were only there a few days,
Thailand left an incredible impression on me.
It wasn't somewhere that I knew I needed in my life,
but now I absolutely need to go back.
Any parts of South East Asia you want to visit?
