The last talk with Vlada was about North Korea
that time we mentioned Oman
Oman is today's topic
So welcome again Vláďa, ... Hi all :)
Oman as a traveller target,
is on fire.
Why do you think it happens? Your personal opinion?
In my opinion, the reason is safety.
It is Orient
Middle east and sultanate
and a really safe country for travelling
and it is an opportunity, to understand Orient culture
with safety and what's more, comfortable
So what you can tell us about Oman,
what are the best things to do there?
It is a safe country with very good roads and highways.
So friendyl people
culture oriental styled
it is really interesting, cause you can find there
places that are no elsewhere.
Best places - not to miss
are Vádýs
Vádýs are places regularly flooded every year
there are natural pools, palms .. an oasis
that is especially for Czech culture extremely catchy
another option is mountain trekking, treks to old villages
where you can discover old buildings, really old ones
abandoned, so it is like a labyrinth
so there is a lot of place for taking pictures, aren't there? Exactly!
What is a typical traveller profile that suits travelling in Oman best?
Truly, Oman is a country that requires little more money...
It is harder to travel there like a backpacker - on a bus (or train - and there are no trains)
You have to rent a car
Oman is, in that case, quite specific
you' ve better rent a car
and for best experiences
it is better to have 4x4 offroad
to be able to drive off the road
there are luxury highways
but the most interesting places are further from main highways
and then the offroad is a big advantage
so wanna or not, situation forces you, a little bit, into the luxury style of travelling
Travelling in offroad is very interesting.
Another info you can find in an article, link below the reportage.
There you can listen to the most important story.
Vláďo, you've rented a car
do you have some suggestions, hints?
for car renting? What not to forget or not to underestimate?
Internet booking is the best.
only that booking type gives you unlimited driving miles without another fee for driven miles
and not to forget rent 4x4 for best experiences
Best place for car rental and journey start is Maskat airport,
even if you enter Oman from different place/way
car rentals are together there and working well
It is important to have equipment in a car
especially for offroad
Im imnterested in equipment
what unusual to bring for a safe trip?
first of all, I can highly recommend
to buy the book guide Oman Offroad
there are best tips where to drive
where to turn off the road, which places to visit
excelent Oman drive guide
available at airport's bookstore on arrival
It is English written?
Yes, English. There are GPS coordinates, simply it is cool.
a blade / somethin for send raking
then some rope
and not to forget supplies
then bigger knife or something for cutting bush that helps a lot when you stack in the sand.
then read the articles about driving in a desert or sandy area
or read about handling the car in extreme conditions
They haven't explained you everything before rental?
Nooo :-D Just told you OK, Sir,
Everything OK, goodbye
and thats it
a for example when you've asked
how to turn to 4x4 drive mode
from standard drive mode, he replied just
THERE
and that was all of his response
So I have to google 'lever to a neutral position, switch and that's it'
you've mentioned Google.
Surprisingly, Oman is online, in the cities and along the roads
I bought a phone card directly at the airport - you can find there everything you need :)
and when it comes to a phone, when you are out of the cities or roads, a signal is poor
but when you need to be online
in 'civilization' everything works well
What do you recommend to do
before you ride into the desert?
A most important thing is
deflate (soften) the tires
this is one of the best advice
during the desert ride
half empty /deflated tires
are better for ride in send
you stuck less in a send
so don't be afraid to deflate a lot
but this is only for send driving
If you drive on stones
or anywhere
it is necessary to inflate them
so it's good to have an inflator/compressor?
sure, .. or there are available at a gas station
sometimes they are not working
but you can find it also behind stores
or at desert people's home
they have it
you've mentioned a gas station, how often they are along the road?
I mean not directly in the desert :)))
... there is old one in the desert, but, I wasn't there, unfortunately
anyway, gas stations are quite often
and generally, there is a marker with distance,
so no big deal to find it
there are not on each corner, but it is enough
However, it is good to have reserve fuel, if you travel further
especially if you do an offroad fun ride
simply backup fuel is always a good idea
how about water?
did you take lots of water barrels?
yes I always buy 5L barrels
almost full car of water:)
its useful for cleaning hands
drinking, whatever...
it is good to have enough water
that is a need
Forget for a moment nomads, deserts, oases,
How about accommodation, daily costs, food?
Oman has a higher cost of living
than others 'common' destination
1 Oman Rial is around 2Euro / 2,25 USD
It is confusing, sometimes look like cheep, but it isn't
for adventure lovers,
even if they have money, is allowed to sleep under the stars?
It is possible and allowed
but take care of bugs and wild animals
it is better to sleep in a tent
or a hamaka? Yes.. but...
there is no place to hang it
no trees
except for the oasis or Vádý
there are trees and there it is ok
Cuisine? Something unforgettable?
I love local cuisines - generally, a meal in the world...
it is challenging, to taste traditional Arabic - Oman cuisine, there
hard to find it
And what is on the menu?
Oman has a huge population of Indians and Pakistan workers
Oman natives invited them
to do some works in constructions
road fixing etc
but this cultures integrated a lot into daily life
really lot
there is an Indian or Pakistan restaurant on every corner
however to find Oman traditional cuisine
so most of your meal was Indian like?
yes, I generally eat the Indian cuisine
and back to topic the of local cuisine
I ve tasted once in a capital
'Traditional Oman Restaurant'
there was a chance
was it good?
nothing special but I can say ... interesting :-D
I was Ok with that
ok let's leave it with word 'interesting'
not to offend the Oman culture
It was INTERESTING
Desert drama? Camel attack? Lost in the middle of nowhere? Conclusion? .... to be continued
