Youtube daily Jan 23 2017

- Hey, hey! This is Conor the Language Tsar so

I'm back here my friend Tonya who is from Belarus and today we're going to talk about

the Belarusian language and ... Belarusian

is not exactly like Russian. It's pretty

close. It's kind of in between Ukrainian

and Russian and Polish a little bit and

I was recently in Belarus so that's why I'm so interested in learning a

little bit more about the language

because I went to Minsk and to Grodno. So Tonya I

noticed when I was in Minsk and in Grodno that while I can read and see a lot

of Belarusian you know on buses, on signs a little

bit, I didn't really hear very many

people speak it.

So in what social context in Belarus do

people actually speak in Belarusian?

- Ok first maybe when we go to the theater and feel closer to the actors. - So the

actual plays are in Belarusian or you speak to

other people in Belarusian? - Yes, they are.

- So it's really popular to go to the theater in

Belarusian as opposed to Russian?

-Yeah. Also I would speak Belarusian if I would date

an actor or a student of the philological department probably.

- Ok and does that happen very often?

- Not really! - You can transform your love life ...

Sid you have to learn before in order to

pick up the guys from the philological

department. It that a tactic? - That might be the key to his

heart actually. Why not? - Languages being the key to someone's heart.

Definitely a strategy that I've also implemented but not in Belarus. - I would also probably

use the Belarusian language when I go to

visit my grandma in the village.

- In the villages - is that because people are a little

more traditional? Is that sense? - Or maybe because

education is worse and they don't actually know proper Russian. It's a mixture of Belarusian and Russian.

- Is this similar to Surzhyk, like they have

between Ukrainian and Russian?

- Yes, we have a word for Surzhyk. It's more like 'Trasianka'. - Trasianka! Ok,

close enough - not really! So it has grammar from

one and words thrown in from the other and

endings ... - Or incorrect pronunciation!

- Because that's quite common in Ukraine along the linguistic border

between Russian and Ukrainian. You have this Surzhyk phenomenon. - It's also very popular in Belarus.

I know exactly one person who always uses Trasianka. - What are the other social

contexts do you use it in? For example if I'm

involved in the political opposition or I want to create my own opposition

party or I want to be elected. - It's an

idea to speak in Belarusian and if there is

a special day in the country that the language

is spoken on? - Yeah. There's a day of the native language or

the National Language Day. - So it's Родной Язык

in Russian? - Міжнародны дзень роднай мовы

- Роднай мовы, ok and then everybody just

suddenly switches from Russian to Belarusian

on that day? - Yeah they kind

of encourage you to do so. Most people just

put on their status on their

social networks. - Okay so for one day of the year

Belarusian is cool. - Yeah, okay and the

other 364 then not so cool.

Okay that's great. So they were the five social

contexts in Belarus that people normally

speak in Belarusian as opposed to

Russian now when I was there in

reality everybody spoke in Russian so

in the contexts I was in so this is

definitely a good informative video about

when you would actually use the language

and maybe maybe I'm going to go back to

Belarus and learn some

Belarusian. When I go back to Belarus I

know Belarusian is used for one day of the

year, if I went up in prison for being a

political opponent, if I want to pick up

the chicks philological department,

- Or the theater department. - Or if I want to go to the

theater and enjoy that you know very

rich Belarusian literature and culture, if I

happen to find my long-lost grandma

(бабулая) who lives in a village! - Да пабачэння! - Да пабачэння! (Goodbye in Belarusian)

Orwell Was Right – Kellyanne Conway and "Alternative Facts" - Duration: 3:42.

During his very first press conference as Press Secretary, Sean Spicer went on national

television and flat out lied about the size of Donald Trump's inauguration crowd.

Now, here's the thing: People lie.

We understand that.

They're politicians.

They're trying to cover themselves.

But this was a lie, as Chuck Todd pointed out, that was easily verifiably false.

We can look at pictures and see the difference between the size of Donald Trump's inauguration

crowd and the size of Barack Obama's inauguration crowd.

Nevertheless, Kellyanne Conway, Trump's spokeswoman, went on Chuck Todd's show and said, "Listen,

what he gave, what Sean Spicer gave us were alternative facts."

That specific phrase, "alternative facts," proves that the United States has now entered

the era of George Orwell.

That is almost verbatim what doublespeak is.

When you don't like the facts, you simply change them to fit your narrative and convince

everyone that what happened in the past is not true.

That's what George Orwell laid out for us in 1984 and that's what Kellyanne Conway,

Sean Spicer, and Donald Trump are doing to America today.

There is no such thing as alternative facts.

A fact is a fact.

It is something that's verifiable.

Something that we can check.

Something that we can make sure actually is the truth.

That's what a fact is.

An alternative fact is just another word for lying, but this is what the Trump administration

has been doing even before they took the White House, by claiming outlets like Washington

Post and CNN are fake news.

They take anything that they don't like, slap a new label on it to discredit it, and move

on with their lives.

Now, rational thinking people do not buy into this, but Trump voters are anything but rational.

They do, they look at an outlet like CNN and say that it is fake news.

"Don't believe anything that comes from that network."

They now look at this inauguration size kerfuffle and say, "Well, yeah, but I mean, my alternative

facts say that I'm right and you're wrong."

This is poisoning the well of public discourse right now.

We can't have intelligent conversations with Trump voters and Trump supporters or even

the Trump administration themselves, because they do not adhere to reality.

They're creating their own reality in their heads and trying to sell it to the American

public and those dumb enough to honestly believe it are buying it.

That's the problem with this alternative facts thing, because that's how it starts.

Mr. Spicer's very first press conference as Press Secretary, first one, and he comes out

of the gate lying.

The Trump administration tries to cover it up by saying that it's alternative facts.

We're in for a rough four years, if this is the path that they're setting out just a few

days into this administration.

Homemade Ungarian Lángos (Recipe) || [ENG SUBS] - Duration: 7:44.

Homemade Ungarian Lángos

All ingredients including quantities are listed and linked in the inbox below.

Welcome to a new video...

...in today's episode I show you a recipe for an Ungarian specialty...

...which is more and more found at various national festivals ...

...today we gonna make Langosch or Lángos...

...that's deep-fried yeast dough...

...topped with sour cream...

...onions, garlic, bacon and chopped parsley...

...for the yeast dough peel 200 grams potatoes...

...quarter them & bring to a boil in a bit salted water...

...cook for about 10 minutes with reduced heat and the lid closed until done...

...then crumble ½ cube of yeast into a high container...

...add 1 teaspoon of sugar...

...also pour in 300 milliliters of lukewarm milk...

...then stir together with a whisk or fork...

...until yeast and sugar have completely dissolved...

...pour off the potatoes...

...and then simply mash them with a fork...

...and allow to cool a bit...

...next, give 500 grams of flour...

...the milk-yeast-mixture...

...& 1 teaspoon of salt...

...into a mixing bowl...

...also add the mashed potatoes...

...and knead with a kitchen machine or mixer with dough hooks...

...for about 4 - 5 minutes until a smooth dough...

...the dough should be loosen almost completely from the bowl bottom...

...and should be a bit sticky after kneading...

...then form a ball...

...lay the dough back to the mixing bowl...

...and allow to rest for about 60 minutes covered with a kitchen towel in a warm place...

...next, we can prepare the topping...

...give 2 cups of sour cream into a small bowl...

...season well with salt & pepper...

...and stir together with a spoon...

...then set aside until serving...

...peel 2 onions and cut into thin strips...

...cut 1 - 2 cloves of garlic into thin slices...

...dice the bacon...

...and finely chop the parsley...

...then heat up a large pan adding a tablespoon of clarified butter...

...add bacon and onions...

...and sweat them for about 3 - 4 minutes over medium heat...

...stirring occasionally...

...now add the garlic slices...

...and sweat another 1 - 2 minutes...

...then remove the pan from the stove and set aside until serving...

...the dough should at least double its volume after the rest period...

...slightly flour the countertop...

...give the dough onto the floured surface...

...and briefly knead with your hands...

...then form a ball...

...and with a knife cut the dough into 6 equal sized pieces...

...slightly flour the dough pieces on the cutting sides...

...now flatten the dough piece with your hands...

...until a thickness of about 1 centimeter...

...next, heat up a large pot or wok adding about 1 liter of oil for frying...

...to check if the oil is hot enough...

...simply dip a wooden spoon into the oil...

...and once small bubbles arise...

...we can start deep-frying...

...slide the flattened dough sheets carefully into the hot oil...

... & first deep-fry from one side for about 2 – 3 minutes until golden brown...

...then carefully turn once using grill tongs ...

...& deep-fry from the other side for another 2 – 3 minutes until done...

...lift out the done Langosch...

...briefly drain on kitchen paper...

...and serve...

...spread the fried dough with some sour cream...

...top with some onions and bacon...

...and finally garnish with some chopped parsley...

...I wish you lots of fun cooking & see you next video!
