7 THINGS IN GERMANY I Never Saw in the USA - Duration: 7:12.

What in the world is this?

Hey everyone! I'm Dana and you're watching Wanted Adventure Living Abroad.

I'm not saying that these things definitely don't exist at all in the U.S.

Maybe they do, I don't know.

But I lived for 22 years in America, and in all that time, I never once saw these things

or learned of their existence, but I have seen them here in Germany.

The first time that I ever saw an electric kettle, I actually had no idea

what I was even looking at.

What in the heck is this? I asked.

And when I found out that its sole purpose, the only thing that it was created to do was

heat up water; a whole electronic machine had been made just to heat water...and the

thing was sitting on the counter plugged in right there next to the stove,

I just found it really funny.

It's not like there wasn't a stove in the house.

In the U.S. I always just had a kettle that used to heat water on the stovetop and it

always worked just fine for me!

I actually only discovered this one quite recently.

This past summer, Mr. German Man and I went on a road trip around Germany, and while on

that trip, we saw a meat vending machine near Paderborn.

A vending machine for meat products.

Because you know, the stores are closed on Sunday in Germany, and what if you spontaneously

decide that you want to grill?

Well, there you go. Problem solved. Meat vending machine.

I don't know actually how common this really is in Germany, though, because it was the

first time that Mr. German Man ever saw a meat vending machine too.

But it was pretty cool.

And speaking of cool vending machines, in December we also spotted an egg vending machine

during our trip to the Chiemsee.

I really, really wanted to get a photo with it, but it was so cold that day that I think

my brain just completely froze, and I just forgot to stop on the way out and get a picture.

I guess we're just gonna have to go back there.

Of course, go back there for more than just the photo of the egg vending machine.

The Chiemsee is really beautiful too.

I made a whole video about this way back at the beginning of the Living Abroad series.

When I first moved to Germany, I saw something called a Nierenwärmer at markets and in pharmacies.

I was just starting to learn German so I assumed that I must have gotten the translation wrong.

So I said to Mr. German Man, what else does Nieren mean besides kidneys?

I don't think it means anything else, he answered.

Oh, so you mean, these things advertised for sale are really supposed to be kidney warmers?

Yep! Here in Germany kidney warmers are sold.

Some are thin cloths, and they basically look a little like a tube top meant to be warm slightly

lower down on the body, but others are thick and fluffy.

I had never in my life heard of a kidney warmer before moving to Germany, nor had I ever heard

in the U.S. any concern at all regarding the kidneys' temperature in particular.

Like, that it's somehow more important to keep the kidneys warm than, say, your stomach

or your small intestine.

I had just never heard about that concern regarding the kidneys until moving to Germany.

Back when I first moved to Germany, I went with Mr. German Man to celebrate Easter at

his parents' house, and I squealed with amusement when I came downstairs for breakfast, and

I saw that the hard boiled eggs on the table were sitting there, wearing little chicken

hats to keep warm.

It was so cute!

I had never seen anything like that before. So cute!

Little eggs wearing chicken hats!

While we're on eggs, I don't know what this thing is called.

Mr. German Man also couldn't think of a German name for it.

So if anyone knows, please let me know in the comments, but what it is, is it's a

great little tool for helping you crack open hard or soft boiled eggs.

You put the hard or soft boiled egg under here, and then you let the heavy ball fall,

and it makes a nice little crack around the shell, which you can then peel off or you

can slice it off with a knife, and then you can scoop out the egg with a spoon!

When I saw this in the store for the first time here in Germany I was super confused.

What are doll clothes randomly doing in the middle of a kitchen store?

But then I realized they're not doll clothes at all, it's clothes for the soap.

It's an apron for your soap bottle!

How adorable is that?

I love this so much.

And thank you so much to two of our viewers who gave us this soap apron, so that our soap

is never naked again. Thank you very much.

Orange juice, apple juice, grape juice...I've heard of many juices before moving to Germany.

But what I never, ever could have fathomed existed in this world was sauerkraut juice.

But it does here in Germany.

And here's the proof.

Okay, so Mr. German Man is already making faces about me trying the sauerkraut juice.

I'm a little nervous.

I feel like it's unfair though that he's swaying my opinion of it, so I'm gonna try to go into

it with an open mind, trying the sauerkraut juice, you know.

Give it a chance.

Oh!

Oh my God, I only smelled it and I'm, my eyes have teared up.

Okay, it smells so bad. Can I really hold my nose? - Yes.

That is horrible. I need some crackers. I need some chocolate.

Why is this a drink?

This is as horrible as it sounds: sauerkraut juice.

No offense to sauerkraut lovers out there, but the juice is not for me.

So my question for you is: Do you have these things where you live, and what other interesting

things have you discovered around the world that you hadn't seen in the country you

grew up in?

Please let me know in the comments below.

Thanks so much for watching and liking and commenting and subscribing.

I really hope that you enjoyed this video, and I also hope that you will enjoy the bloopers

that are coming up next.

Until next time, auf Wiedersehen!

It's so cute!

We also spotted an...

I actually only discovered this one quite, quite, quite, quite, quite recently.

I have lived is the present perfect.

That would assume that I am still living in America.

I have lived in Germany for seven years.

It is still on-going.

But I need to use the...whatever the past...simple past!

Regents Exam | Algebra I (Common Core) | August 2016 | Problem 20 - Duration: 3:57.

Regents Exam Algebra 1 August 2016 Problem number 20.

An online company lets you download songs for 99 cents each after you have paid a 5

dollar membership fee.

Which domain would be the most appropriate to calculate the cost to download songs?

In this problem we need to determine the type of numbers that our variable is allowed to

have in order to appropriately calculate the cost to download songs.

Let's first determine the variable expression that can be used to calculate the total cost

to download songs, and then we will systematically go through the given options to see which

one would be the most appropriate.

According to the problem there is an initial membership fee of 5 dollars which has to be

paid before you even start to download songs.

Once you pay the membership fee then you will be allowed to download songs for 99 cents

each, so if we let x represent the number of songs then the total cost for downloading

x number of songs will be given by the following expression 5 plus 0.99x.

This expression represents the total cost for downloading x number of songs.

Now let's systematically go through the given options and determine which one would

be the most appropriate.

Option 1 reads rational numbers greater than zero.

Recall that the set of rational numbers consist of all the numbers of the form A over B where

A and B are integers provided that B does not equal zero.

This set of numbers includes numbers such as 1, 2, 3 as well as fractions such as one

half, 3 halves and one eight.

If we allow the domain of x (the number of songs) to be the set of rational numbers greater

than zero then we would be able to purchase any multiple of a positive integer such as

1, 5, or 20.

This means that we can also purchase a fractional portion of a song such as one half, 3 halves

and one eight.

This is a problem since we do not usually buy half a song or an eight of a song so this

domain does not make sense.

Option 2 reads whole numbers greater than or equal to one this domain includes all the

whole numbers greater than or equal to 1 this includes numbers such as 1, 2, 10 and 20.

Since the domain consist entirely of whole numbers there shouldn't be a problem assigning

this domain to the possible values of x the number of songs bought since the whole numbers

represent the purchase of a complete song and not a fractional portion of it.

It seems that this is our answer just to make sure let's take a look at the remaining

options.

Option 3 reads integers less than or equal to zero.

This set will include numbers such as 0, negative 1, negative 5 and negative 20.

The number zero makes sense since you can decide not to buy a song, but the negative

integers means that the online company will actually pay us 99 cents when we decide to

purchase a song.

So this domain makes no sense, companies tend to take your money not give you money.

Option 4 reads whole numbers less than or equal to one this is very similar to the set

of numbers from option 3, as a result this option will also make no sense for the domain

of the variable x doing so would make the company pay us money for buying songs.

In the end the option that makes most sense is option 2 whole numbers greater than

or equal to one and this is our final answer.
