Good afternoon, my name is Kourtney and today I am going to be sharing with you how to build
the basic website through Google.
First off, you need to log into your google account.
As you can see, I have several.
Once you are logged in, you are going to see the waffle, or menu bar.
When you click on the menu bar here, you are going to see a whole bunch of applications.
You are going to choose "sites"- right here.
When I click on "sites", you're going to see a page that looks like this.
On the left hand side, you'll see "create".
So, you will click on that.
Now, Google Sites is a free and easy way to create and share webpages.
There are two different choices- there's the "classic Sites" and there are the
"new Sites".
I do know from training, being a google level 1 certified educator, that the classic sites
are going to be nonexistent in the very near future.
So, I would highly suggest that we start with "new Sites".
If not, then you might not have access to the old one, which would be defeating the
purpose right?
So here were go and we get to this page.
It doesn't look like so much fun yet, but there is so much you can do with it.
First, I would highly suggest that you name your site.
Let's call it "What's my name?" so you don't forget to name your site.
And then you can click where it says "Your page title."
I am going to call it "My name is…"
And that is up to you to name yours whatever you decide.
Now, behind here is gray, but if you look to the right hand side, you can see tabs that
are labeled "Insert", Pages", and "Themes."
Right now, we are in the "Simple" theme.
I would stick with that, Im just telling you it is so easy to manipulate.
That's what I have my site in.
There are other choices though, so if you decide you want to try something else go right
ahead.
But, at this point we are going to just stick with the "Simple" theme.
You can change the image in the background but right now I am just going to show you
how to add a logo in the back, because you maybe you want to add your own insignia or
have some thing on it that says "this is mine and nobody else has something exactly
like this."
You can select "photo", or you can upload a photo, or you can actually search on google
and you can download a picture of whatever you would like.
For me though, I am going to just choose a happy face, there we go!
Click open, once it gets it uploaded, you can choose the background.
I can choose white, or black.
I kind of like the black, I think that looks pretty cool.
Now, this is great it looks good, however I am going to need some text at some point.
So, how do I get the text on there?
If you would look right next to themes on the right hand side, it is to the left of
"themes".
You would see "Pages", and "Insert" tabs.
Let's go to "insert."
Click on text box.
And there you go, that's where you go to get text.
You can write whatever you would like, and you can even add links (hyperlinks), you can
have a list, you can add whatever you would like.
Write to your heart's content.
So, let's see.
I am going to say "This is my new site, but it isn't quite done yet."
"Please see my old site until this one is up and going."
My old site…let's see…instead of saying my old site, how about click on my old site.
So, I am going to highlight "my old site" and I'm going to click on this little chain
there, where it says "insert link"- That's the text I want them to click on, and it's
going to take them to my old site, so…http://www.greenlocalschools….tada!
Click on "apply" and everything is all good!
So let's say we have this whole page filled up, and we've added images, we've added
urls, we've added a whole bunch of stuff to this.
Eventually, you are going to end up needing another page- maybe to separate ideas, so
you are going to need to click on "pages" on the right hand side.
Again, we have those three tabs on the top right hand corner that says "insert",
"pages" or "themes."
This time click on pages.
When you click on pages, you are going to see "add page" with a little plus sign
on the bottom left hand side.
Click there, and name your page.
I'll write "student work samples."
Press done, and if you pay attention right here where it says "home" , ahhh now you
know you have your other page.
So you have your "home", and your "student work samples."
One more thing I want to show you- is that BEFORE you set up your website, you want to
check and see if it looks good.
I know I don't have a lot on here, but you would click "preview" -that little eyeball
from the top.
It shows you what your website looks like on a computer, on a tablet, or even on a smart
phone.
I can even see the other page too.
Home page, now let's just click to make sure this website still works- my old website.
Will it take us there?
There is is.
Alright!
I have a lot of things that I need to update and move over to my Google Site I'd say!
