Wait, wait-- you think you can judge me?
Ain't none of y'all better than me,
but you eat because of my dirty work, and then bitch about it.
I think Terrence is one of the finest actors I know.
When we first started off, I was like, OK, is he
a little bit like Sug Knight?
Is he a little bit like Puffy?
Is he a little bit like Jay-Z?
And it turns out, he's nothing like any of those men.
The choices that he's making, it's never the cause.
It's always the effect of something that
has transpired in his life.
One of the most beautiful things about the way
the Terrence plays Lucious, he's a master of this struggle.
Where some people would say, well he's back and forth,
because he's evil.
No, he's back and forth because he's struggling.
Very, very smart girl, But now you're cornered.
And so are you.
Terrence is always very aware of what
he's doing in the scene, what his activity is--
simple, subtle things.
And he has a way of forgetting that the camera is there.
He says that's his job.
Working with Terrence, we work very closely
in creating a lot of subtleties to who Lucious is,
and also unexpected moments and how he
could deal with the situation.
Sometimes we see him fly off the handle--
Hey, hey-- listen here, Opie Cunningham.
Then sometimes he deals with a issue with such grace.
So it's always surprising the audience.
The only preparation that you can do
is a little bit of meditation before the day
begins, and try and figure out what
is missing in this man's life.
It's Groundhog's Day every day for the character.
And you're going in there trying to get this one right.
The enormity of damage I've done to my soul.
For what?
I try and give him a hopeful beginning in the day,
but knowing that he's probably going
to have some schizophrenic also from some PTSD that's occurred.
And that's going to throw him off.
And try and remember to remain focused, remain focused.
Keep your anger under control, because Lucious
has somewhat of a temper.
And I try to live within that, which
is very difficult, because he's such a troubled,
troubled character.
All right, so y'all got a little power and you know
how to play a little hit back.
Y'all fancy.
But when we hit, we hit real hard.
When you look in his eyes, you see the myriad of thoughts that
pass through all that he gazes.
I have to shut down my own personal feelings
in order to accomplish the needs of the character.
So strange-- if I had known this was going to happen,
I swear I'd have done things differently.
I'm still struggling to figure out who and what he is.
And we're going into season 4.
But I guess that's the hardest thing for any man or woman
to find is themselves.
