Youtube daily Dec 23 2018

Hello tech lovers, if you've been a subscriber for a while you may have seen

my review of the Connexoon which is a little box she used to control blinds

the blinds are just behind me. At the time I was a little disappointed it

didn't quickly and easily integrate with things like Alexa and Google assistant

someone puts a comment on that to review recently to point out I can use 'if then

this that' to set up the integration so I just thought I'd do a quick video to

show how you do this and how well it works. If you know heard of if-then this

that it's a great website that allows developers to not bother integrating

with hundreds and hundreds of apps that are out there they just integrate with

this send this if they're missed that even! And that allows you to get things

working together very quickly and easily. It's a free service the, websites is iftt.com

or just search for IFTTT and that will come up, and you need to create an

account so to get this to work you're going to need to add a service,

it's the Safi Connexoon service, when you add it you'll need to grant it

access to your song fee account so here we have the options available so we can

control your home with smart home, let's have a look, so you can see they've

already got some preset up to do with thermostats and protection systems, open

things and close them when you when your phone gets on the Wi-Fi,

So here's one for Google assistant

now I'd like to see one with the Alexa but it doesn't look like they've got it

with Alexa at the moment, let's try let's try where's the Google system

let's try Google assistant. We can set this to launch a mode, you have to set

the mode up in the Connexoon app first and we can let's have a go at just

saying open blinds, you can have various other ways of saying it different

options we'll just say ok no and I want to launch open blinds save. OK it's now

active so in theory I've got Google assistant on my phone ok

Google open blinds...okay so that's caused it to search for open blinds I maybe

need to be a bit more specific in what I'm actually asking it to do.

Tell you what I'm going to try this upstairs I've got I've got an actual Google assistant thing

upstairs let's see if that will work so I've currently got it set to open house

blinds let's see if that works correctly.

ok Google open house blinds

it works so there you go after a few setbacks, namely thinking that I could

do it on my phone, you can set it up so it worked fine, gave the command, open the

blinds, but that was from a standard assistant as opposed to the one that's

on your phone but it's good to know that you can integrate it with Google and

therefore if you do have the little assistants dotted around you can just

tell it to open the blinds, close the blinds, and maybe even link it in with other

smart tech so that you could run it and say close the blinds activate the

lights if you wants to do that. If you're a Connexoon owner what kind of things

have you done with this have be really interested to know in the comments below

what tips, tricks and suggestions do you have for how you can use it with if then

this that what have you found to work what have you found that doesn't work.

I hope you found a short video useful if you have please consider hit subscribe

and joining my tech tribe and if you want to see more of my videos just click

this one next see what else I've been up to thanks for watching I'll see you in

the next video

Stories Of The South: The Thumper | Southern Living - Duration: 5:44.

This is in glorious memory of my grandparents,

James Clarence and Ida Pearl Boney,

who taught me about the beauty of growing things,

and about the poetry of good, simple people who

lived and worked under God's southern sun.

The Thumper, by Wanda Butler.

(inspirational music)

First, you find a grandfather.

That is a prerequisite for

locating a perfect watermelon.

If said grandfather is an old farmer type,

southern and cantankerous, all the better.

I happened to have one of those

so I didn't have to search for him.

He had many talents, but the most impressive

was the ability to pick an

absolutely magnificent watermelon.

This talent was displayed almost ritualistically,

only on special occasions,

and usually for an appreciative audience.

The end result was, after all,

an impressive sight.

The event usually took place on the

fourth of July.

My mother and grandmother would rise as one

and begin to make their plate and porcelain

sink noises after a large meal

of ham, potato salad, fresh rolls, and all

the other required feast items.

Grandaddy would then clear his throat.

"Ahem, Ida Pearl, is it time to pull a melon?"

My grandmother, after hearing this question

every fourth of July for the past forty years,

would sigh and answer, "Yes, Clarence.

"And take the granddaughter."

And as he did every year, he would grumble.

"She'll step on my vines with them

fancy tennis shoes."

But he'd motion to me, give a brief nod of the head,

and we'd set off around to the front of the house,

down the sidewalk by my grandmother's petunias,

and across the front yard to the road.

The field was on the other side of the two lane.

The acres where the corn threatened

to turn the sky gold with fringe,

where the tomatoes fairly burst

from well-staked plants.

We didn't talk much.

My grandfather was never much of a talker,

just a doer.

"I'll never rust out, just wear out," he'd say.

So the man would stride with purpose,

wearing his khaki shirt, old moth-eaten cap,

and Washington, D.C. overalls, with a Prince Albert

tobacco can poking out of a front pocket.

He pointed with his pipe at how high the corn was,

and how his pole beans were doing.

I couldn't have cared less.

I was four years old and the mission, the quest,

was the watermelon field.

We went over a little rise, and there it was:

a child's dream of heaven.

The Earth was so covered by snaking vines

and emerald melons that there was scarcely

a spot of bare ground as far as the eye could see!

"I'll tote ya now for a spell," he'd say.

He picked me up.

Held just about the waist, I dangled

like a disjointed marionette.

Somehow, his heavy Sears work boots

never stepped on a vine, never broke a twig.

He was Jason, searching for the fleece.

He was Don Quixote, veering toward the windmill.

The field was magic, and he was the magician.

Finally, he set me down in a clear spot

and began to look.

The true test began.

Leaning over, he clenched his pipe

between his teeth, his gnarled old hand caressing

a melon, feeling its vine, examining its color.

Then, with a smart popping noise, he thumped it,

dead center, with thumb and second finger.

"Not near ripe," he'd say.

"How can you tell, Grandaddy?" I'd ask.

"You've got to listen for that thump.

"That one there made a sort of plunking noise,

"so it ain't ripe."

He leaned over again and again,

listening for the resounding thump.

He always found it on the third or fourth try.

It would be a beauty, elegantly striped and shaped.

He'd pull it, put it under one arm,

me under the other, and we'd start back.

He had found his prize.

The finale was yet to come, however.

We would stride proudly to the sidewalk

behind the house, and he'd hold up the ripe fruit.

"Ida Pearl," he'd yell, "this is the best 'un!"

"Go ahead, Clarence, and cut it," she'd say,

looking out the back screen door.

Out would come the bone handled knife with two blades.

He'd pull out the longest one and

stab the watermelon right in the middle,

there on the sidewalk in the backyard.

Such a cracking noise, the splitting open of that melon

and what a sight!

A red that no color chart could ever match.

Dotted with exquisite curved rows of ebony seeds

that glistened, it was perfect.

Grandaddy would then cut the fruit

into long slices and pass them out.

Each slice would be devoured,

right down to the whitish inner rind,

then thrown over the barb wire fence,

into the chicken yard.

Soon, there would be no evidence

of the hunt, or subsequent feast.

The spectacle was over.

It was that way every year

until the ritual played itself out.

The magic and the magician left the field.

But at the farmer's market here in town,

I still look for a grandfather; preferably one

with arthritic hands and faded overalls.

I get a good melon every time.

Banking While Black Is Apparently Illegal Now - Duration: 4:34.

In the United States today, it is apparently now illegal to bank while black.

Here's a story that happened earlier this week.

African American man in the state of Ohio, man by the name of Paul McCown's, had a new

job.

He just started recently, walks into a bank with this paycheck, tries to cash the check,

provides them with the two forms of Id that they requested and gave them a fingerprint.

He just wanted to cash a check and they ran it through the system and said, you know what,

something doesn't smell right here.

We don't.

We don't like this.

This is too much money.

So they tried to call his employer and asked him if he was in fact paying this African

American man a little over a thousand dollars for work that he had done that that's not

that much in terms of a paycheck, but still they thought that was too much money for this

black man who walked into their bank to have so they believed after they were unable to

reach his employer, they thought it was fraudulent.

They thought he forged this check even though we'd given them the ID, the fingerprint did

everything right, and so he takes the check and says, okay, well I'm going to go.

Didn't cause a scene, didn't get upset, just walked out of the bank and when he got into

his vehicle, there was already a cop car there waiting for him because while the bank was

telling him they're not going to cash this check because it's too high for a black man.

They had called the cops.

The man was handcuffed, placed inside the cop car, and then thank God the cops were

able to reach his employer who verified, yeah, he works for me.

Yes, I pay him that much.

What's the problem?

So the cops let them go.

The next day he went to a different bank and was able to cash the check.

No problem.

This is racism.

You know the bank Papalo guys.

They said, Oh God, we're so, so sorry sir.

See what's happened is we've had 11 cases of fraud over the last few months and so we're

just hyper vigilant.

That was their excuse for hypervigilant because there's been so much fraud.

No, you have embedded racism in you.

That's what happened.

Now, I'm not saying that any of these tellers are overtly racists, that they're going out

on the weekends and putting all their white hoods and burning crosses.

I don't think that at all, but I do think that this story highlights a major problem

in the United States is that we have too many people who are racist and don't even know

it, and I think that's what happened with this bank tellers.

They are inherently racist people, but deep down, you know that's something they do hold.

They may not have known it was there, but they saw black men come in with a check for

a little over a thousand dollars.

I told him, this is too much money for a guy like you were the cops.

That is a deep seated, embedded racism that this country has to address.

You know, it's bad enough that we have the overt people out there that feel empowered

under this administration, but the rest of us have to look inside ourselves and realize

we're not that innocent either.

You know, maybe you've gone a little over to the side of the street one time while walking

because there was a black person coming the other way and maybe you thought a person looks

scary.

That's embedded racism.

You may not be a racist, but that's what that is.

It's that inherent bias that people unfortunately still hold and we have to move past that.

We have to get over it because if we don't, we're going to continue down this path to

where every time a black person in the United States tries to do something, whether it's

cash a check, whether it's sell lemonade, go to a community pool, we're going to end

up calling the cops on them every time ruining their lives, embarrassing them, terrifying

their children and proving to them that we're still horrible, racist people.

We're not.

We shouldn't be, but I still think too many of us are, and that's something we have to

work on.

It's not their fault.

It's not the fault of the African American community that is 100 percent on the rest

of us and we're the ones who have to address it and.

Correct it.

What Unai Emery has changed in the Arsenal attack to improve the team - Duration: 2:49.

Mick McCarthy believes Unai Emery has made a significant change to the Arsenal front-line

The Republic of Ireland boss felt that things had gone "sour" under Arsene Wenger and that it was a perfect time for the Spaniard to come in and take the club in a new direction

In the main, it has gone well.  Arsenal have lost just three league games this season, and only once since August

The Gunners were often criticised under Wenger for playing nice, attractive football, but all too often accused of trying to pass their way into the net

McCarthy, a guest on Sky Sports' Goals on Sunday show, believes Emery has changed that since he has come to the club

The former Ipswich boss said: "One thing I've seen about Arsenal is the centre-forwards following things in, getting into the box trying to score

"So often in the past they would be cutting it back to the edge of the box, but now they're getting bodies into the box and they look like they want to score

"They're passing it forward, players are running in behind, stretching defences, I think they've been brilliant, really exciting to watch

"Arsene brought that brand of football into the league some 25 years ago, he changed it with the players he brought in, the brand of football, he was brilliant for so many years and it just went sour towards the end

"I think after Arsene, he'd been there so long, people had become disenchanted with him, he was brilliant for the club, but there does come a time when you've got to leave

"Emery's not inherited a bad squad of players, it's a most magnificent stadium, it was a great time for him to take over, he's done very, very well, he's got them playing some brilliant football
