you know it's crazy how much stuff you collect over what five and a half years
of doing this so this is like where everything that I've ever collected
through this Golficity venture has come to getting it on my wall I still haven't
put you know wrap this up up but of course this is probably my favorite
seventeen at Bay Hill it's great you know I got this blown up because here's
the ball everyone who sees its funny like dude you pulled it into the stands
and I said nah I play as les ended up in the bunker popped it out any bogey on
this hole before coming up on 18 so I have to get this blown and put on the
wall of course you got the Arnie wedge here it's part of the swag for the
pro-am participants and then who can forget the sign I was waving like a
lunatic in the streets of Manhattan when I won the prize to go to the Bay Hill
program I'm gonna come around here office it's actually pretty clean today
I came up on a good day actually let's do how let's do this one this is
actually interesting I yeah here's all the media badges when we started getting
credentials from the PGA Tour to cover going back to 2014 may remember this one
I think the park lays all the way through Northern Trust and this of
course pro-am media and Clubhouse and you have probably my favorite one this
is the Caddy veg that one's pretty cool birthday my 35th birthday everyone came
we had a golf theme party here's Frank's line when in doubt go
with the driver happy birthday it was pretty good uh hats I'm a big hat guy
love hats and I have a ton of hats I give away more than I have so I like to
just keep my favorites the ones I like to play and work out it here's for the
pro-am me and Moe Inari got my uh my glove side to FootJoy blob and he plays
Nike apparel so when I asked in this unlikely does I don't know if I could do
that split joy but then he laughed and he signed it Jordan speed he was only
signing for kids I asked him to sign it for my daughter my daughter doesn't mean
know who he is I own it got it Tiger Woods that was part of work
we did with Bridgestone on a collaboration and then when Jimmy Walker
came to town he won the PGA Championship at bold strong so this is it man this is
everything and of course everything else we've collected over the years just
little things you know it's been fun clubs old clubs new clubs and this is
where it goes to live ladies and gentlemen
you're a are we are we back he here we are here we are we're back hey hey hey
what's up all right man what do you say we get episode two for Dan let's get it
going yeah cheers let's do it all right got my
coffee here you ready all right everybody another huge milestone this is
episode number 250 years Mike can you believe it has been five years five
years man unbelievable I'll tell you what I I I want to have a
little fun with this episode we're gonna kind of celebrate a little bit of the
things that we've done we're going to talk about some things where we're going
we're gonna tell the story because we've got so many new listeners out there and
viewers on YouTube so I'm excited for this we are gonna we're gonna kind of
decompress all of that but first man cheers - cheers man I it's been a ride
it has been arrived and this for a lot of people who might not know this is one
of the only episodes I think maybe out of 250 maybe we've done ten episodes
physically in the same room can you name five of those real quick Pound Ridge yep
Eric Anders Lange most of them are interviews because we went on site to
see the different people the barclays two of those right - Barclays I don't I
can't think of many others pro-am in hotel I am in
the hotel room that's right that's true so maybe there's only fibers it might
have only been but but the fact is most times when we record we're not in the
same room we're not even in the same state mm-hmm
you know I'm usually in New York you're in New Jersey that's crazy but hey
that's what it takes to bring a show week in and week out for five years you
know we don't always get the chance to physically get together so we record it
each from our home offices remotely and then you know through the years we've
had some bumps here and there we do the best we can as we can sometimes you had
some audio issues but hey when you're recording and doing all of this
coordination over those distances things happen about what we're pretty dedicated
you know I mean we brought on a lot of help over the last couple years helping
us with with editing and in the website and you know and you know video editing
and but but I got a clap to Frank because he's edited all 250 episodes
he's the guy behind the guy behind the guy god you know so you know kudos to
you man it is a lot of work for you I mean we all have full-time jobs too we
have kids yeah you've got two daughters I've got two daughters and a lot has
changed over these five years speaking which can you remember the
first episode when was that August of 2013 I just went back the other day just
in preparation of this I wanted to listen to it and it's just it's funny
you know I mean there's it's it's ad free you know good we were so fresh up
we had those new radio voices sort of speak yeah we were a little nervous we
didn't know what we were doing and it's just great and and I recall
like right in the first minute you stated the mission of golf is City you
know the fact that we're not pros right and we just have this passion for this
game and if you guys and you even said it you're like hopefully you guys pick
up some tips to along the way that's it you know so the first minute of this
venture from five years ago and it's always been the same I always been the
same and we've kind of always kept that as our North Star for any decision we
made we always said back then we said let's create a golf media company that
creates the type of content that you and I would want to see yes or hear or read
or whatever at the time I started with a blog then it went to the podcast and
we've introduced video and now social media and stories and we've got a lot
more places we're gonna go with it but we've always said that same thing if
it's something that we would want to see or hear or whatever let's do it right
you know that we don't worry about anything else it's just our
own decision and then that's what's been so amazing to me as we've seen it
progress in over the years now people listen to and watch the show from all
over the world and when we hear from these people that is what really it
makes me happy really me endears me to this community because when I find that
people out there reaching out to us saying that they're enjoying the content
it tells me that we share a similarity you know no matter the distance I feel
like we're very similar because if it's content that we're creating that we
would want to hear and then other people are attaching to it it just tells me
that these people are you know we like I said we're we're endeared to each other
there's a way that there's a connection there even over that distance yep
so I think that's been that's been really great but yeah the show has
really evolved oh and speaking of which and you said there's no ads there's
nothing like that the first two years I would say of the
show I don't even think we had many listeners you know it was just like us
talking like handful we always look we started the show as an excuse to talk
off yeah a lot of people think we're brothers were cousins and so we we ran
to each other a lot and a lot of family functions and our wives would always
kind of like push us apart and say like enough talking about golf guys you know
cuz you know get other people in the conversation well it's your fault you
should be playing golf but but we said you know what the podcast is a good
excuse to just have a free hour a week is to talk golf so we just we just had
fun and then talked about it and and a lot of people have reached out to us one
way or another saying they want to start their own podcast a lot of people have
different passions whether it be fishing or whatever and they'll say you know how
do you guys do it and and can you give me any tips and the one big tip I always
tell them is like only do it if it's something that you love because you're
gonna have to really want to do it right commit to a for a long time and I said
commit to a minimum of probably two years of doing it every single week and
don't worry about the fact that in no one's listen listen no one may be
listening you know for the first two and I think a lot of people now they see the
podcasts are getting big and they want to start a show and all the sudden they
think they're just gonna have you know tons of people listening it just takes
time takes time to develop so I think those first two years what got us
through is just the idea that we just love song I think now you know if we
and have any listeners or any sponsors we would just still do this because we
love doing it so if you love doing it then do it if
you don't I think it's gonna be hard to sustain and keep that I'll totally agree
and we've always been worried that we're gonna run out of things to talk about
right but we never do now because especially with this game a game that
you can't master right you know we're always kind of talking about something
whether it's PG 8 or whether it's our own game whether it's equipment yeah I
mean you name it we're having fun with it so yeah couldn't agree more
exactly and speaking of those sponsors - we've always worked hard to bring
sponsors to the show that we feel like bring value back to the list yes that's
like kind of like one of our little are gonna work with somebody and a good
example is shot scope you know they the team has been so great working with them
that they've even developed custom leaderboards for our listeners because
we always kind of say that that's great you know people want to sponsor the show
we hear from people a lot who want to sponsor the show and we say what can you
you bring back to our listeners what can you offer them whether it be these
giveaways that we try to do or whatever it may be because we think that that
that creates a better relationship we want to be able to have stuff constantly
because we're so grateful for where this show is brought for us and the
experiences that we like being able to give back I mean we just launched the
vlog on YouTube specifically because we said this show is opening up huge doors
for the experiences for us let's bring people along with us what's the best way
to do it flog it mm-hmm you know and we did that all right so the show is
evolved we've both had two kids each since starting this shell-like
lives have changed a lot away we've moved many times yeah the other thing
too is it's it's really helped our game working on this every week where did you
start I was about a 22 23 I don't remember somewhere in the mid to low 20s
and now I'm down to 12 and a half just a huge change in my swing over five years
equipment working with different coaches meeting people like Kevin Sprecher and
yeah all the people we've met along the way it's just been great and and I've
kind of like worked my way the same way I I got back into the game after being
out of I played the game as junior golfer I played in high school good in
high school you know I was good at em but we're not that good like I had a lot
of fire memory game good in high school I was good for my age because not a lot
of people played so relatively but we had the on the high school team we had
like the starting crew and then you had the whole team and then what the dude
the coach would do is he would pick like the top six players to be in an event
right out of like I think there was fifteen of us so you could get benched
you could get benched okay most the time I was on the bench really most of that
okay there's a couple of strategic events he played me in but there were
some kids who were just incredibly talented right out the gate I mean these
kids are in high school they're shooting you know low 17 I at the time I'm more
so I had things that I struggled with things that were working on now like a
lot of things if I could go back and reteach myself especially with the
mental game I was a very frustrated golfer back then but I also I was more
of having fun with it a lot of my friends were on the team and it was just
a great way to go out three days a week we got to go out and just play nine
holes together yes practice rounds so I wasn't always
out there I was kind of like middle of the pack guy sometimes I would be in the
competition sometimes I wouldn't but I just like it was a cut on the fringe
just having fun with it um see what you did there
now I've yeah now on the fringe now I've since taken it much more
serious and I and I look back at some of the mistakes I made and I try to learn
from them but I had been away from the game I got back into it went around the
time we were starting the podcast I was about an 18 1/2 handicap and I've worked
my way down through 12 and a hammer right there with me we are now the same
and this is we know what they say but people spent too much time together that
they start to just do too many similar things
well yeah I'm on the way down here today and I and I call my mic mic you want me
to stop him getting I'm getting Starbucks you want anything he's like
yeah blonde blonde roast black Grande right on my call man dude that's the
same hair I order exactly we're just starting to think way too much like with
the same handicap we got the same coffee oh yeah just wait to be talk about the
shirt were wearing all right let's see we know you're absolutely right I love I
love that you came back into the game too and I kind of started to fall in
love with the game and it just happened at the perfect time and we're gonna go
back and tell that story but before we do that I want to what actually said
that forgot some of these interviews because we we've had a lot of people on
the show we have and I want to do more I want to make it a goal to do more
interviews definitely talking on people you know from dr. Joseph parent you know
to you know of course Gary Player episode
my favorite because the energy he brought like you always say he kind of
revitalized this show for us I think I was super excited after after talking
with him what about you well in Gary Player I feel like almost in a way kind
of kicked off your fitness thing the last years because like hearing a guy of
his age and how committed he was to a fitness just like he just oozes energy
and anybody we've talked to who've also talked to him feels that same way but
yeah dr. Joseph parent was a huge one for me because one of the first things I
did when I was getting back in this game was read sand golf yes it was a game
changer for me so being able to pick his brain was big I liked having Andy and
piers from me and my golf on because again going back five years ago when we
started we were learning and relearning the game and using them as a resource I
watched a lot of their videos anybody who's ever struggled with their golf
game you know has any issue has probably typed it into YouTube and found one of
their videos yes so that was great to get to speak with them
more recently Eric Anders Lange just a couple months ago we met up with him
great yes since absolutely exploded as he has car him yeah you hit that great
guy I mean super genuine the guy you see on YouTube and you see on Instagram is
the same guy you meet in real life right uh he is you know
just loves talking golf you can just go on and on about talking to him and his
stories are excellent and I've just enjoyed watching you know some of the
things he's doing and the similarities that we have like where we're not pros
he's not a pro he just enjoys the game that's it he came from like he said he
never wanted to play golf and then all of a sudden he got the bug and now he's
doing so I think that's been great watching him progress Austin cook was a
great one on the show he was he was fun to talk to
recent PGA Tour winner yup met him told him I would love to meet him at the
Northern Trust and went out so I'm walking with his caddy called his name
told him who I was said thanks again for coming on the show he came over shook my
hand great guy really cool fun having him on super down-to-earth if you follow
him on Instagram you see some of his stories in hannasseys that's the
down-to-earth guy and that was that was a great experience so we've kind of like
tried to have all aspects from from authors to coaches dr. Chuck Martin
Chuck vegans we have had some big introducing
came on he was great Peter Jacobsen David Ledbetter great yeah so it was
just you know we got to explore that side but then you get to explore the
side of like the PGA Tour and then just to some experienced guys like Eric it's
just been we trying to like work a little bit of everything in and again
following that same thing as like what content would we like to see like who
would we want to hear from it would we want to speak to and those are the
people we reach out to to get on the show but we always like suggestions you
guys want to hear from make sure you tweet us at kalfus city post to post a
comment below let us know who you want to have on the show and we're gonna
continue to work on getting some more interviews in the coming years my love
whatever we need more of those and I was about to grab one of my wedges cuz we
can't forget the VOC man himself yes you know Bob Pope he was on the show
this year too which was great and funny story about that we started the
interview it's via Skype and then all of a sudden he just stops talking because
someone came into his office and he's like the guy goes listen VOC we heard
yeah he's like the building next door is on fire and we need to evacuate and we
had about what like 15 minutes of the interview 10 minutes done done already
and and he's like again super nice guys who were down are these guys I apologize
I'd like they're making me leave he goes I'll call you right back
I'll call you right back he's like I don't live far from here ten minutes
later he must have flew home ten minutes later he calls us from his house and we
were able to finish the interview so that was really another down-to-earth
guy yeah really great and he makes some amazing clubs he does that's for sure so
I want to tell this story about gothis City how we got started and like I said
where we're going I want to get into that again we've hear that question a
lot now especially with a lot of new listeners and viewers so I think it's a
great time to go back and look back and talk about that what do you say we do a
word from our sponsors first yeah let's do it let's pay some bills here real
quick so this episode is sponsored by shot scope guys you know it's December
we're in New Jersey courses are closed we're not playing much so the stats
aren't building on the shot scope but we still love this the device we are going
to use it all next year we're gonna be working with shot scope through 2019
we're gonna be doing a lot of giveaways which shots go up in 2019 yes and you
know we're gonna come back strong we're gonna be in Orlando next month playing
three or for round so the stats segment is gonna
get live again in as well as the leaderboards as well right and I love in
the dashboard you can drop it down by season yeah so one big thing that we're
going to do in a future episode we do every year at the end of the year we do
our goals episode and this year we can do it really quantifiably yeah we're
gonna talk about what our goals are in hard numbers because with the shot scope
we can jump back season 2018 you know 2019 I do some comparisons but again
it's also a good time to thank them because I think they've been so great
the team working with them and the leaderboards that they've created just
just for golf the city we've seen a lot of guys in the Facebook group posting
that they've got it you know for the holidays and whatever it may be and we
just get that I think the leaderboard is just gonna explode in 2019 yeah and as
you said we're gonna do a lot of giveaways we're working with them on
some really excellent stuff but all that aside it is a revolutionary product 189
dollars and some people can't believe it that does not sell message me in there
but doesn't really keep all your stats and you know like everything you don't
have to do anything you just wear the watch and the watch itself you know you
get it's very light it's a little bit bigger but understand that everything is
in here the GPS ever you get used to it you get used to it really quick but then
it's so hands off everything is happening it's keeping your stats in the
background people like how does it how does it know when I took a practice
swing versus a real impact I'm like magic it knows I don't know I didn't
build the device but it works so now's the time to get it go to shot scope calm
such kalfa city or use coupon code all 50 to get our discount and you're not
gonna find a better price so it so definitely check that out
yeah for sure and of course Frank this episode is sponsored by Titleist as well
had a blast this year I mean you can see the clubs are behind us here we've done
the what's in the bags we've done the unboxing you guys have
seen the club's we are blessed you know to just to be able to work with Titleist
this year and hopefully through the rest of next year and I think you know the
big standout for me and this year my golf game was this switch over to
Titleist yeah and the ap3 is in the VOC he's in the TS driver which I didn't
even realize I can get more distance you know hitting 292 85 and you know getting
some over the 300 now I mean it's it's there so you know the it's been great I
can't wait for 2019 and seriously and and it's just been it's been such an
amazing progression to just go through this and it just
shows again talk about working with sponsors that add value back
it just shows because there's been so much interest in these clubs to the to
date our fitting video I think is our by far most watched video if you combine
both YouTube and Facebook views I think we're almost at a quarter million views
yes it just shows you that Titleist is doing the right thing there there's a
lot that they've done that that's gone into both the AP 3's and and the the
amount of attention that the TS drivers have gotten just kind of really shows me
that they're doing something right the Rd team is is hitting on what the market
is after right now and it just shows the amount of distance I've read so many
reviews about the TS I have not heard anything bad you know everybody's
getting more distance more forgiveness so guys you owe it to yourself to try it
out make sure you you check out Titleist comm look for like you said those
Titleist Thursdays because a lot of people say I don't want to do a fitting
they're so expensive they're free you can do a Titleist Thursday so it's the
best way to get out there try it you really owe it to yourselves guys check
it out for sure and lastly we just want to thank Peter
Millar this is funny this wasn't planned we're both wearing the same thing the
Peter Millar Perth pullover which I love this thing I did and look there was a
high chance we both be wearing this today because I think I wear this thing
every day yeah same I went to the office I've got
two of them and I just rotate them yeah you know they're awesome they're perfect
to wear on the course they're perfect to wear off the course
second skin movement which basically it feels super thin yeah you could swing a
golf club it moves right with you but you know like Frank said I wear it
often you could see it right here on the video it's super sleek head over to
Peter Miller comm slash golf to get yours and while you're there you know
use that code because you will get free shipping and a free hat from Peter
Millar which is pretty cool that's right so check it out the Peter Miller comm
slash golf that's Peter Millar comm slash golf
alright man so what do you say wanna hop right into the story a little bit story
let's go back in time way back yeah actually let's go back to is it April of
2012 okay we head out on a vacation you're what we were married at the time
your wife you and your wife remarried yes because this was only five years ago
does that make sense you and your wife me and my wife we went
on a cruise I forgot we go Jersey the Bahamas or something something like that
and if you want to take it even further back than that was there further back
there is further back because what had happened was it was just you know maybe
a couple months before that where you and I ran to each other at a family
event you had just started playing golf and I had just started taking it back up
so we just started chatting about it and then we said you know what you know we
didn't have kids at the time your you know your wife my wife we're like let's
just start getting together a little bit more once a week for dinners yes yeah
number that's yeah so we would get together once a week and then we'd be
chatting a little bit about golfing about your game like whatever yeah and
then as part of that progression again you know before kids the world is your
oyster absolutely it's like let's we book like like we had some time like
let's book a cruise let's all go away oh yeah so we all like the the you know
that's two couples we go away on this cruise mm-hm and that's where if you
want to pick it up yes what happened where's Oh golf is City
idea yeah so I remember we were up on the top deck and I think our wives were
with us we were drinking a beer and believe it was a red stripe this is how
much most of a red stripe yeah you remember that right the official beer of
golf yeah no so we girls were like we're gonna go get ready for dinner because
they take about three hours yep and we're see we're gonna hang out out here
up here we did we started talking I don't know how we got on the topic but
we said we got to do something we want to start something let's come up with an
idea so I think a round golf yep cuz that's where the press were always
talking about yeah and that's where our lives were at the moment really really
playing right and and you know we said all right let's do it and I believe I
don't think anything else happened on that trip that led us to and I think
everything happened after we got home yeah we started to talk about alright
what are we gonna do yeah the idea was fresh in our mind so we're like let's
follow up on it I'm going to the website now because
we I remember where I was I was I was in a one-bedroom condo with my wife and I
was sitting on the couch and I kept eating ur like alright dude what are we
gonna call this thing yes and that's where - it's kind of funny we had the
same conversation because now like you like to pick the brains of other people
in the industry so we had the same type of conversation when we were speaking
with peers and Andy and me and Mike alpha guys how'd you come up with me and
Mike off they're like well every domain on earth was taken exactly like Oh same
with us so I remember we're like okay let's
start a blog at the time it's like a blog you know we're talking about five
almost six years ago this is when you know kind of blogs and things like that
we're just starting to really take off and like let's it'll be a good place for
us to just kind of jot down our experiences you know and physically and
in writing right so we're like we need a domain name we tried everything we got
to the point we're like we're gonna have to make up a word you know and we said
like part of what we wanted to do was kind of simplify a very complex game by
talking about our own experiences with it so that's where golf this city came
from right like simplicity but to date a lot of people like to leave that little
eye out Mike's biggest pet peeve is when people call us golf City which I don't
blame people don't blame it it's a it's a quick miss it's a small I in the
middle our logo should be redone with an eye that's like twice as big anything
yeah but yeah so that's where it came from and like we had little fun with it
we thought it's a fun you know word you know like golf visited you know whatever
and we threw it out there now it's funny hearing our our daughters say it it's it
is funny that is always a fun thing but um we registered the domain and then
there - we kind of like picked around again always with the same theme like
what do we want to see what could we use and do you remember for a brief time
there were we had a directory yeah and I'm upset about that I mean we had
actually probably the first Golf Course Yelp ish style directory before golf
advisor right and there was thousands of courses yeah and it started to get a
little traction it got a little big we're leaving reviews yeah that's kind
of the direction we had go we had that idea too because again we're like you
know we were just starting to play like where do we want to play golf and
they're like I wish there was like a directory right now was a
around yet I don't remember honestly no and we weren't thinking about teachers
we just wanted a place you can go to rate a course yeah put some photos up
cuz we were big Yelpers could ever going out to dinner to dinner right so we were
into that and you know we kind of we mix that passion with golf and that's kind
of the direction we wanted to go but then it died but then yeah because you
know what we also we wanted to focus our attention on what we kind of liked best
because we only had so much time right you can put into something so we've kind
of done that and through the years we've kind of jettisoned things that we you
know we're taking away from our where we really want to put our time and around
about that same time is where we started the podcast maybe we were like five six
months into the website and I was like at the time I was doing a lot of
commuting I was commuting about an hour back and work right so I was listening
to a lot of podcasts and this is five years ago podcasts were very new there
wasn't a ton of of podcasts out there yet so I said to Mike I'm like listen
let's start a podcast you know and let's put that on the site it'll be a way for
us to talk all there were no other golf podcast other than golf smarter golf
smarter was out there yep and I don't remember a whole lot else there might
have been one or two other golf podcasts at the time so we started a weekly
podcast at times it actually became a biweekly podcast there was a couple
winters where you know not as much was going on and we were very busy so we did
that but I think at least for the last three years it's been weakly yeah and
when we go on vacation we batch him it's crazy I mean right we get it done we get
it done yeah sometimes we record one or two podcast before one of us goes away
sometimes we've done them remotely yep but we did that we said you know let's
let's do a podcast and commit to it and that's where like I've talked about this
before and I talked about earlier about a lot of people who start podcast they
ask me like what could what goes into and I'm like just be prepared to do
years of podcasting with no one listening because that's what we did for
the first two years it wasn't a whole lot of listeners now we do still have
shout out to the listeners whose contact doesn't big I've been listening since
episode one I love that I love that but because now when I put it in a playlist
on iTunes I think rooked like four days worth of audio if you put them all
together it's wild so yeah so that's been but you know you know sorry to cut
you up but one of the great things that's come out of the show and is this
podcast group I mean it's been probably my favorite thing this
alpha city army that we call it just the listeners going over to this free
Facebook group we could just continue the conversation we've actually have
taken stuff from that group and made a whole podcast episode out of it just
from the our feedback from the community it's just like a forum of just diehards
who just are sharing knowledge and one guy the other day said you know I stuck
one almost holed it out but I'm a god I almost got an albatross but I got an
eagle I'm like twenty people were all over like congratulations I mean that's
the stuff that is that I'd love to see you know the group it's so great because
of how much positivity is in there everybody's so supportive I we talked in
a previous episode about negativity in the game and like not being too negative
on yourself so it's just seeing that is so cool don't worry about the guy with
the golf clubs you don't have to shout them out but you know yeah we've been
beating like greats to protect the innocent right we've been kind of like
knocking this around like I want to say this on the podcast but then I'm like is
it gonna be a digital even name off it won't ruin the Christmas surprise
because I don't know if this particular listener listens with his kids and I
don't know if it's be ruining his surprise for Chris maybe we don't well
what I'll say is there was an individual in the group yes who I'd love to shout
your name out maybe you can let us know in the group if it's a shout yeah but he
had purchased some clubs for his kids for Christmas and he over purchased him
and his wife so there was an extra set of two and just out of the goodness of
his heart he jumps in the group and he's like listen I'm not gonna return these
just let me know anybody whose kids need clubs and I'll ship you want bread
holiday cheese yeah no no no shipping charge anything I'll just send them to
you yeah and I'm like that is what this is all about like getting kids in the
game sharing helping each other with the game I mean the game is something that
that's that common passion we all share but there's so much good that Golf
brings and that's why I love that we do this with this sport whether it be the
charity work that you see with that big golf golf is the number one sport for
raising money for charity number one right because you think about all the
different events that happen throughout the years and things like that
we've played plenty of charity events I want to continue to do that so that was
so cool and then that's what the group has really become in a lot of different
ways and and we appreciate everybody who's in there and everybody who helps
with that but I want to go back again telling the story and I think one
interesting thing I thought about this one when I was
driving down here today I think in a lot of ways we were kind of destined to it
because we've been surrounded by the game for a long time even before you
started playing I was playing a little bit at the time but if you remember we
come from from a big you know Italian family yeah right and a big part of our
our tradition was always getting together every Sunday and our
grandmother would make a big pot 2,000 pounds of pasta right you know we would
call it some people call it sauce we call it gravy and I mean that's probably
a lot it's a local thing but whatever so anyway she would make that pasta
meatballs the whole the whole nine yards and we have we come from a big family a
lot of cousins how many first cousins do we believe it's 19 yeah at least nine 19
right and now you expand that out we've all had kids it's just it's a huge I
just got to be like six team I said we can't even fit in the same room right
but we would all kind of pack into our grandmother's basement she'd have every
Sunday a long table we'd all sit there and we'd we'd eat dinner and if you
remember right behind grandpa's chair at the end of the table I remember that
little it was probably a 20 inch TV yeah okay and because we're always together
on Sunday what was always on it was a sporting event it was always golf yes
football random football scene but it was always God's time and everybody
would kind of like it would be kind of like always weaving its way in the
conversation when something big would happen everybody kind of paused look
over and we talk about it right and it was just kind of like seeping into the
conversation even at the time so I'd always to found that interesting that we
both shared that experience you know kind of growing up that is true it is a
cool thing so you know flash flash forward so we launched the podcast the
podcast slowly starts to gain more traction and as it does it opens up a
lot of doors and as these doors start to open we said they know these are a lot
of great experiences we're getting to do so just not long ago maybe twelve months
ago we said let's start videotaping this let's vlog it I remember I still
remember that I said Mike we got to turn the camera on yeah show people what
we're doing here so we were able to start to do that and then the vlog is
it's grown tremendously in the past year on YouTube and this is something that
we've only really taken seriously for the last four this year
right you know a lot of people I love that comment which I'm so grateful for
when people say how do you guys only have 8000 subscribers this stuff is
great well the reality is even though we've had the channel the YouTube
channel for five years just because we grabbed the name way back then I've only
been we've only been doing realistic yeah doing it for the last year or so
yeah but we've got big stuff coming big bit we're gonna announce it a little bit
yeah we are so that's kind of how we've we've kind of progressed through it and
and and the other thing too is don't forget the the linchpin that holds us
together I still feel like is the website yeah and as part of that has
been the app you know we released the app this year which is another big thing
it's free for Android and iOS but we've always wanted to create something that
was bigger than me and you mm-hmm you know we as we said we wanted to create
the content that we would want to read so we said let's create the resource to
hold that content and golf city has been that we've got so many voices on there
now yeah we've got probably 10 very active writers but we've had about 60
different people contribute content to this website over the past five years
and it's something that we want to continue to do but very similar to the
idea that we had where we said we're not pros in golf right and we wanted to
share experience we wanted to create a platform in the form of golf is City
comm and the golf is City app where other people who are not you know
trained in the traditional sense they're not journalists they're not trained
writers right but they're passionate about the game yeah and they want a
place where they can share it and we said let's create the home for that
mm-hmm and that's what we've done you know with golf isset ii and and we put
it out there often we're always looking for new contributors people like Eric
and and Chris yeah Eric Ben Zabur Chris McEwan guys who start off listening the
show and have since migrated to where they're they're actively contributing
some of the best content on golf acity some of the stuff that these guys put
the other with with Chris with the McEwin reviews it his reviews are
excellent same thing with Eric he's so in depth
with the way he he discussed some of the experiences that he's had
with with equipment and with lessons and things like that
and here's guys who don't have a writing background or anything like that but
they've got this great experience to share yeah and that's what we wanted to
put forward and we still get emails almost every single day and what the way
I qualify them if people who want to write you get basically to people who
just want to do like a one-and-done piece of content just for some exposure
I'll be honest with you guys those go in the trash right when I see people who
write to us and say guys I've got a huge passion for this game I'm just looking
for a place to share it like yeah that's that's exactly what we're looking for
that's us and that's what we you so so we're gonna continue to work on growing
alpha city with more voices more experiences hopefully more video more
more blogs more vlogs more podcasts even we had Caron Hart on for a little bit
while a little while she's been since you know taking on some other ventures
she's been very busy but just getting her experience as someone from from a
woman's standpoint playing the game and learning the game and the fitness stuff
that she does I found that to be very interesting you actually interviewed a
lot of her friend she's big in the in the Instagram world so a lot of the the
instagramers it was it was great so we're gonna continue to work on that
right yeah we're gonna do that we got a lot of other things and you know what's
interesting a full of fun fact about capacity you know looking back I mean
Golf is City pretty much almost died on the table two months in and I remember I
think I believe you were on a family vacation sorry I just moved my mic like
crazy you run a family vacation you were in the Jersey Shore and ever you called
me up and you said this exact line to me you're like so do you want to continue
doing this or not yeah and I remember where I was and I was like I don't know
I mean we're just putting out these articles about anything and just we had
204 people visit kalfa City and the whole month of May in 2012 a 201 looking
at the stats now fast-forward Frank we're closing in on 7 million all time
views over today we're averaging over a million views to the site over over the
years that we've been doing this because of the you know the growth so we you
know I'm going back to that phone call because that was like a turning point
they ever might for our lives I think yeah because I said to you it was like
yeah let's let's continue on let's do you motivated me yeah with that call to
say let's go and then you kind of revitalize me and then from
that point I'm looking at the numbers and I mean it's been a great run and
it's so true I think that's a large testament to why this has worked is that
you and I have picked up the reins when the other guy kind of feels like I mean
to five years of doing something and staying committed as often as we're
doing how many articles even are on Kalfas intimately there's over like
three thousand published article right so it's just like the time that it takes
to do that and there'll be times when would a band flow our lives would get
busy but we just use is that you know when one one one guys down on it the
other guy picks it back up that yeah let's keep doing away and we
reinvigorated with these new things like launching the blog and like whatever at
the time when we launch the podcast you didn't even listen to podcast I was just
like I was like what are we gonna do you're just like but that's a good thing
is like it's just be like you're just down you know you're down to do I'm like
listen we're gonna be like okay what is that and yeah alright yeah that's good
I'm in send them sending equipment my way right so I think that's been an
important part of why this has worked for so long as the fact that we just
keep motivating each other to do it now I feel very motivated by all of the
people who are you know um I'm getting a phone call there you said you said turn
off I did this I did tell you well unfortunately my my computer is
connected to my phone just rang on my computer but what was I saying there we
were talking about kind of firing each other up and you know what that's kind
of what we do we do you know we it what's great is a you and I would cup we
have very creative minds and we love this game so much so there will be times
where like we stumble with things and you're like him like I got a great idea
let's do this yeah and I'm like yeah I'd love that and then my mind starts going
and then we just keep bringing this stuff out and I just remembered - the
other thing I was saying is that now I feel even more motivated to buy the
other voices on golf yes and when you just hear like some of the exciting
parts that other people are doing and this year - when we travel down to the
Orlando show we're gonna have both Chris and Eric with us so the team is
expanding I love LA and I think that just serves a constant motivation to
keep doing it but for anybody who might just watch us on YouTube or just listen
to us ice highly encourage you to check out golf se comm check out the app
because like I said there's just so much more that we put there as well and I
just I want to be able to give like I said give a platform to so many
other voices out there who may not traditionally been able to have a
platform you know you you can't just email Golf Digest and say I want to
start writing for you it doesn't it doesn't happen that way but you can you
know come to golf is City and if we feel like you've got a compelling thing to
share and that that passion is really there we're gonna give you a spot to do
it yeah for sure and I think you know everybody has
something that they want to say and you know you know you take an article that
came out the other day on Golf Digest about you know Patrick Reed and
everybody who's hating on him and nobody's talking to him and there's
there's beef you may have an opinion on it you may want to write about it I mean
where the platform for it exactly and it doesn't have to go through a million
layers of like a prove oh sure we've got some editing process not everything
makes it onto the site but we're trying to kind of create a place where on you
know I'm kind of unfiltered doesn't go through a million different hands in
order to get out there and you could just put your voice out there all right
so what else Frank what talk about the future what's coming up for us I
definitely wanna talk about the future I think the future is going to include a
lot like I said a lot more of that trying to expand this platform to bring
more voices it might be more voices to the YouTube channel
it's definitely any more voices to the the app and to the to the website and I
think I'd like to continue to pursue finding a ways to put even more podcasts
under the golf acity platform leverage the experience we have of knowing how to
create distribute and run a podcast and for people who don't know but they've
got something to say I think we can kind of work with them on that yes I love it
and as long as we keep giving back to all of you yeah I'm gonna be happy I
want to just keep doing that I want to keep doing giveaways and giveaways and
giveaway I love this concept when we get something you again he's not something
we have I want to continue that I'm you know I want to be like the giveaway guys
right you know every time we get something that like we're gonna try to
just keep giving something back and that's been a big part of again when we
qualify people who want to work with the shell from a sponsor be like all right
you know people will say I want to send you this all right well then send us
extras because we want to also give them away right and then sometimes when we
only get one of something and there's two of us we'll just give it away
yeah it's go we don't fight over
so what else I want to talk about to some some kind of behind the scenes some
different things that have happened throughout the years that are kind of
funny that we didn't get to yeah talk about okay I think one of the big ones
was our first PGA Tour vogue yeah so speaking about like this idea of not
being conventional media you know we're new to this when you go to a PGA Tour
event as media you realize that there's a lot of guys who they do this for a
living they've been doing it for a long time and there's a lot of the names that
you're used to hearing but then you're starting to see some fresh faces some
new media in there us being one of them so we recorded a vlog we got media
credentials and we record a vlog at the Northern Trust two years ago and we
posted it and then we get an email from tap on the show the old tap on the
shoulder from PGA Tour like it has to be taken down and basically may go away
yeah it's such a good video because and it's on us it's not on that yeah all
right it's because of the fact that we didn't realize there was a completely
separate credentialing for video and what cameras you can use and what types
of cameras and all those times we can't film and what you can film and we told
them look it's a learning experience we want we're here for the long run we want
to learn more so we can do more and they've been very good at guiding us
since yeah they've been great you know and and and how helping us with how you
get the proper credentials and stuff like that but unfortunately we did
record a killer video that day and it had to go away unfortunately only Frank
and I can watch it with Tom Horn and yes we got to speak with Jimmy Walker yeah
yeah but and then we've been trying to work with the PGA Tour and - and saying
listen this is a it's a new media it's a new way of doing things it's a little
bit different from the Convention and and it brings more people into the game
because we've got a people who a lot of people follow us and they want to see
our take on it and that's where that led to things like when we did the profile
they let us fill Molinari but even there we had to learn there were certain
constraints like we were only permitted to film on our phone or phone we weren't
even allowed to use the camera there so all that it might look a little bit
different because I'm filming with our phones and there's a killer video it was
and even there we had like follow some very specific rules of tours very
specific rules we could not film any PGA Tour player
play right at all we could film some interaction with Molinari but we weren't
allowed to film we honor the request we did seconds only even with you it's
funny because it was your golf game but because it's out there on their thing
they own it right so we were only allowed to film I think it was 60
seconds of what they call golf action yes so you know again it's all there for
good reason they're working on different things that they're doing with it but
but we're learning as we go and we're hoping to do a lot more PGA Tour's
capture that experience and we have it for life now we have a flight awesome it
is you know and then they let us come back to Ridgewood and film that so
they've been great and we're gonna do more and more with them and it's just
like it's it's a learning experience on both ends it's them the growing and
working with new newer media less conventional media like ourselves and
also with us as being new not quite knowing the ropes and how this works and
learning the ropes so shout out to that whole PGA Tour team it's been great
working and learning with them alright before we wrap it up you want to talk
about our friends at shots go yeah what's gonna happen and we got a big
announcement so this announcement it it probably was launched already it's
probably out there ready because we're live segment happened to ready we
announced this but next year we're gonna be filming tons of vlogs a series of
vlogs and we're heading over to the Scotland to Scotland you know and it's
the birthplace of God yes I'm super excited this is so exciting I'll be
honest with you guys I have not ever even really traveled outside the country
I've never been to Europe you you recently been to Italy couple times I've
never been over there this is a first for me
we you know we got chills just talking about it because like every golfer it's
a dream to go over to Scotland and play we're gonna be playing some of the
biggest courses Carnoustie is gonna be worked in there there's gonna be some
scene engines as well it's gonna be the old course but we're gonna play at st.
Andrews and again it's gonna be we're gonna be going over there as guests of
shot scope they are over there that's so the base that's there hopefully one day
or the facility yeah so they you know reached out to us they invited us to
come over and hang out and play some golf with them like yeah
yeah I think it's six and a half so it's six right well according to the
preliminary itinerary we have about six full 18 whole rounds and then a nine
whole round in about a five-day trip yeah so it's a it's a bit busy it's
gonna be busy trip plus I think they were gonna throw in like a distillery
whisky tasting tour when you're in Scotland me do it you do it all you do
it all you go for the full experience I'm excited for the food I'm excited for
the culture I'm excited to to live like William Wallace for a week yeah and I'm
excited to share it so we're gonna log in we're gonna be doing all the
behind-the-scenes stuff on Instagram on the stories and as well as on snapchat
so make sure you guys follow that but that's gonna be the big guy but we've
got a lot of other stuff in 2019 we're gonna try to bring some some more course
vlogs a lot of guys have been asking for course vlogs we're gonna be doing that
we're gonna try to include video more in some of our podcasts and our interviews
so we're just gonna keep kind of doubling down on that stuff and we've
got a trip in a couple weeks or going down to Orlando we're gonna we're
working on planks with some big names while we're down there we're gonna have
fun we're gonna try to meet up with many of the the listeners and the viewers as
we can definite TopGolf meet up if you're in the area come on my land OC
and on our Instagram yeah it'll be fun so Scotland's gonna be the big one
that's the big announcement yeah man lots of giveaways in 2019 just more and
more of it so check it out but but I want to hear from you guys to like I

messaged us to invite us to play with them at different areas our schedule is

that stuff work as we can so a lot of great stuff this is fun it's just fun we
