The Real Reason You Didn't Get the Job (House Cleaning Bids) - Duration: 10:49.I'm licensed and bonded and insured and there are a whole bunch of other people that are
on social media, they keep undercutting my house cleaning prices, what on earth am I
supposed to do to compete?
Well, that's a great question, and we're going to talk about that today.
Hi there, I'm Angela Brown, and this is Ask A House Cleaner.
This is a show where you get to ask a house cleaning question
and I get to help you find an answer.
Now, today's show is brought to us by MyCleaningConnection.com
and that is a cleaning hub resource of a bunch
of different things that you can use as a house cleaner to help grow your business.
And there a bunch of books on there that will help you with word tracks and power talking,
and they will help re-frame the way that you present your ideas so that you can sell value,
not price.
All right, MyCleaningConnection.com
Right now, onto today's show, which is an exciting question and this comes up about
30 times a day in my personal life from all the different networks of house cleaners that
I get to talk to.
Now, there's a common thread that, "Oh no, everyone else is undercutting my price and
I don't even know how to compete in this marketplace."
Okay, let's back up a step.
I'm going to share with you a short story about the other night, I had a business meeting.
I went to a business meeting and part of it was at a restaurant.
When we went to this restaurant, I looked at the menu and I started laughing inside
my head, because the cheapest thing on the menu was about $20
and it was a little bowl of soup.
All of the entrées were $40 to $50 dollars apiece.
As I looked around at the table of people, I saw everyone scanning the menu and they
kept flipping from the beginning to the end, the beginning to the end.
We're already thinking the same thing: "What on earth can I eat on this menu
and get filled up?"
Because we're all hungry, it's been a long day, it's been a long training.
Here we are looking at the menu and everybody started making these weird excuses like, "You
know, I have dietary restrictions and I can only this light broth soup that's $20 for
a bowl of soup."
Everybody is looking for the cheapest thing on the menu, and then when the food does arrive,
it's this great, big, monster plate with this little, tiny portion of food right in the
middle of the plate.
Oh, it's decadent looking, right?
It's all designed and it has like these little capers on the side and there are some kind
of fancy glaze and there are a little droplets of stuff on the outside of the plate that
you can't eat.
They just look pretty.
That's your $50-plate of food.
So the reality is it was the wrong place to eat for the business meeting for the type
of people I was with.
They were all pretty much industrial blue collar workers that are working by the hour
or by the job and we're all penny-pinching and paying attention to our savings, and it's
the holiday season.
Nobody wants to spend $50 a plate on three bites of food.
You know what I mean?
It was one of those restaurants.
And I'm not knocking the restaurant because there's a place for that, but the reason I
shared this story with you is this: some of us going to the house cleaning business, thinking
that we are a $50 a plate service, but the customer is not buying a $50 a plate service.
So they kick you out the door and they say, "Your price is too high," or there are other
people in the neighborhood that come in and they go, "Hey, if you're hungry, we are a
hibachi grill where we have all sorts of fresh fruits and vegetables.
You can grill any of those at the grill and we have sushi on the side, and it's only going
to be $11.99 a plate."
So a lot of people go, "Oh well, I'm hungry.
I'm going to the all-you-can-eat buffet," and you're standing over here in the corner
going, "Well, I have the decadent-looking plate of food, why aren't they buying my thing?"
Okay, well, the reason they're not buying your thing, you might be in the wrong neighborhood.
I'll be honest with you, you just might be in the wrong neighborhood.
You wouldn't have the really high-end, fancy, aloof kind of restaurant in a lower part of
town where there are lots of Burger Kings and fast food places, and your hibachi grills
that are going to be the all-you-can-eat buffets for 10 bucks.
They're not going to be in the same place.
It's a different clientele.
So if you go into one market thinking, "Well, I know my worth and this is what I'm going
to charge," you might be outpricing yourself, okay?
I'm not trying to have you scrape the bottom of the barrel and go on and charge gas station
price for food.
There's food in every gas station, but that's not the high-end stuff.
So when somebody comes in and they undercut your price, they're not competing with you.
If you are the high-end service, you are the high-end service and that is your price, but
you have to sell your value.
You have to know why people will pay your price, and then you have to be able to justify
it to a customer that doesn't understand, okay?
So when you go to bid a job at a customer's house and the customer says, "Whoa!
That's way too much money," what you've done is you've gone into an all-you-can-eat buffet
type situation, offering the higher end value meal.
That might not be what they're buying at all, so yeah, you're never going to make that sale.
Now, the people that are undercutting you, what are they offering?
It's easy to say, "Well, they're not insured, and they're not bonded, and they're not licensed,
and they're not legitimate, and they don't have Social Security Numbers, and they're
not paying taxes and all these things."
The reality is they probably are.
They probably are.
They probably have discovered that they can go in and they can sell gas station price
food in any market because any market will buy an occasional soda or an occasional candy bar.
This is now a sit-down healthy meal that's vegan, that's gluten-free, that's all these
other things.
That's not what this is.
This is a sugar-laden quick snack that they're offering, right?
The reason I make the comparison is because
some of the cleaning services are a quick clean.
They're going to come in; for 50 bucks, they're going to come in, they're going to wipe everything
down, they're going to vacuum the floors, and they're gone.
There are other companies that are going to come in and do a top to bottom, left to right
floor sweep of every single room of the house and they're going to do everything every time
they come.
There are other services that do a rotation basis.
They're going to come in and do pretty much everything, pretty much all the time, and
then they will rotate special chores on occasion.
Then there are only companies that will come in and insist that they only do a deep cleaning
on the first time and that they have a high-end service after that.
Well, the reality is this.
If somebody calls you and they're asking for, "Hey, my relatives are coming to town for
the holidays, and I would like to have a quick clean of the guestrooms, I'd like the kitchen
and the bathrooms to be clean," and then you march in there and you sell them something
different, like, "I'm going to sell you a deep cleaning and it's going to be 650 bucks,
and I'm going to go through all these things that you offer."
That's not what they're buying.
They're going to go, "Holy cow, that's way more money than I was willing to spend."
What they were looking to spend was a $150 to get their kitchen floor mopped, the counters
wiped down, the bathrooms tidied up, and the guestroom ready.
That's what they're willing to play.
So there are things that you're offering to sell sometimes and it's not what the customer
is buying at all.
I had this experience the other day.
I have a leak in the roof of my house.
It is one leak.
Turns out that it was a little bracket that was poking up and that was catching the rain
and the rain was coming directly down in the bracket.
There was no damage surrounding the bracket at all and the roof was in perfect condition.
It was one bracket causing a leak.
That's it.
So the job was literally to repair two, two shingles on my roof.
Pound the thing down, replace those two shingles.
That was the job.
I had a couple people come out because they couldn't find the leak.
One guy gave me this enormous project that he was going to do.
It was literally ripping off most of the roof of my house and he was going to re-shingle
things and he was going to paste things down and do all kinds of fancy things, and it was
this exorbitant price.
He never addressed the fact that I just had one leak in one spot.
That's it.
That's it.
That was my only problem.
So he came in trying to sell me what he wanted to sell me, but not what I needed.
He didn't get the job.
So he could go tell all of his friends in a Facebook group that, "Well, I didn't get
the job because she said I was too expensive."
No, no, no, no, no, for what you are offering, you are perfectly in line with what you are
selling, but it's not what I needed.
You see what I'm saying?
So when you go to bid a job, are you selling what the customer needs?
The reason I ask this question is because there are a lot of house cleaners that don't
actually know what they're selling.
So they know how to sell one thing and they take that to a customer and the customer says,
"That's not what I'm buying."
Then the house cleaner gets all bent out of shape and they don't know how to adjust.
So if you don't know how to adjust and you don't know how to sell in value and you don't
know what you're selling, it's time to stop and relook at your process, because if you
are the high-end, expensive meal, and you're going to a market that's looking for gas station
food, you're never going to make that sale.
I'm not trying to be ugly, but I do want to explain the fact you're never going to make
that sale.
It's the wrong item for that market.
So I like to back up just a little bit and encourage you to take a look at what you're
selling.
Who are you?
Be very clear about what you're selling, because if you are the name brand chef and you are
the name brand restaurant and that is your specialty plate that you offer, then you have
to know what market you're selling it in.
You got to know what neighborhood is willing to buy it.
You have to know what price point at which you can sell it, where people are not going
to come in and just order the broth soup and they're actually going to order the entrée.
You got to make sure that you know what you're selling and to whom.
Then if a gas station comes in and says, "Hey, we're offering cheap sodas and candy bars,"
you're not going to look at that as competition because they are not your competition.
They are selling something completely different to a completely different audience.
All right, I hope that helps you a little bit.
I hope this reframes the way that you feel about your business.
You can sell the high-end meal, but you have to know that that is what you're selling and
then you have to sell it with flare and finesse and confidence.
Alrighty, if this helped you a little bit, please pass it on to a friend, please share
it, and if you have questions or comments, you can leave those in the notes below.
Until we meet again,
leave the world a cleaner place than when you found it.
