Was Kanye's 'Dark Fantasy' Album Almost Called 'Donda's Boy'? - Duration: 2:51.

Hey everyone, for Complex News, I'm Justin Block.

It goes without saying, that anytime you can learn about Kanye's recording process, you

pay attention.

Behind-the-scenes stories about Kanye add depth to his iconic body of work, and now,

we think, we have another: the original plans for Kanye's 2010 classic "My Beautiful

Dark Twisted Fantasy."

Of course, Complex's 2010 cover story on Kanye brought readers directly inside the

Hawaiian compound where Kanye and his all-star squad secluded themselves while recording

the album.

But, according to Rory Farrell, who was an intern for Def Jam during the summer of 2010,

the album that Kanye eventually released and its original version were two totally different

projects.

In fact, the album was allegedly going to be called 'Donda's Boy,' named after

Kanye's late mother.

On ItsTheReal's 'A Waste of Time' podcast, Farrell says Kanye randomly showed up to the

Def Jam offices in July 2010, but wouldn't explain anything unless the entire office

was dressed in suits.

Seriously.

This was during Kanye's 'Rosewood' Era of suit style, and he took it just as seriously

as he would any other creative endeavor.

So, the next day, with all of Def Jam suited to Kanye's liking, he came back and played

'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' for the office.

The album Farrell describes, however, is nothing like what was released.

Farrell says the album was called 'Donda's Boy,' and had 10 tracks that were supposed

to be 10 minutes long each, with no features.

Also, "Runaway" was originally 20 minutes long, didn't have Pusha T's verse, and

ended with a 15 minute outro of Kanye singing.

When Farrell's story made its way around social media yesterday, two long-time Kanye

collaborators chimed in to question 'Donda's Boy.'

Mike Dean, who's worked as an engineer and producer for Kanye since 2007, ambiguously

tweeted his doubts, but didn't explain further.

Later, Plain Pat, who once worked at Kanye's manager and A&R, posted this now-deleted tweet:

"News to me"

As great as Farrell's story is, there are some holes to poke at.

First off, we know that Kanye had the album named "Good Ass Job" at one point.

He's never mentioned 'Donda's Boy' before.

Also, if the album was supposed to be ten tracks at ten minutes each, why was "Runaway"

20 minutes?

And by July 2010, Kanye was back from Hawaii, so it'd be strange for him to play the album

for Def Jam without all the guest features he recorded there, like Rick Ross's, Nicki

Minaj's, and many others.

But, there's one quote from Kanye's November 2010 interview with Vanity Fair that could

possibly support Farrell's 'Donda's Boy' claim.

When asked about his retreat from the spotlight and into more recording studios following

Donda's sudden death in 2007, Kanye directly connected his mother's legacy to his own

music:

QUOTE Kanye West via Vanity Fair "The best thing I can do now is carry on

my mother's legacy.

I need to recapture the hearts of the world just to show people how great my mother was,

to show people that Donda raised a good guy.

My responsibility is to make music that's progressive, that makes me happy, that makes

everyone happy."

And what better way to show people that "Donda raised a good guy" than dropping an instant

classic named after her?

Just something to think about.

That's the news for now, but for all the latest on Kanye, be sure to subscribe to Complex

on YouTube today.
