Why GM Decided to Cut 14,000 Jobs - Duration: 6:11.Chris Hill: GM announced it is laying off 15% of its employees and cutting production
at five plants in the U.S. and Canada.
And just to be more specific on that, two of the plants are in Michigan, one in Ohio,
one in Maryland, and one in Ontario. That's close to 15,000 jobs.
As we've come to expect, at least from the stock market perspective, we shouldn't be
surprised that shares of GM, up on this news.
David Kretzmann: Of course, we always sympathize with people who are losing their jobs.
That's a big blow -- Hill: And a rough time of year.
Kretzmann: Yeah.
It's unfortunate on a lot of levels, for the individuals, the families, those communities
that probably rely a good amount on those factory jobs there.
That's always a painful process.
But looking at GM from a business perspective, this is a company that needs to cut costs.
They need to find ways to cut expenses, raise free cash flow, and improve profitability.
This is a company with an operating margin of 5%, a net profit margin of less than 1%.
They're, right now, cutting a lot of corners there. They're pinching pennies at this point.
I think this makes sense from a strategic perspective.
At first, when I heard this news, I thought, OK, maybe they're shifting some of those production
jobs to another market, maybe overseas, where you're able to hire labor for a cheaper rate,
or whatever it might be.
But it looks like they're essentially just taking that capacity offline and just trying
to ramp up capacity or utilize their existing facilities even more than they already are.
From an efficiency perspective, that makes a lot of sense.
If you have enough capacity with other factories, with other production facilities,
then you should just focus on those existing production facilities rather than having several other
facilities that you don't actually need to produce the vehicles that you need to supply.
Hill: It was interesting to see that this wasn't simply, as you said, "Let's cut these
jobs and move them elsewhere." About 25% of these jobs are white collar jobs.
So, yes, they're are a lot of factory jobs, but they're are also some front office jobs, as well.
And, as you said, scaling back the production in a pretty dramatic way.
It's interesting, this was hinted at a week or two ago by Jim Lutz, one of the former
vice chairs at General Motors, talking about Mary Barra, the CEO of General Motors,
and her message to her executive team.
It was essentially like, "Let's start to look at ways that we can tighten the belt."
I don't know if Jim Lutz thought it was going to be on this level, but it's clear from this
move that Mary Barra and her team essentially are saying, "Not only are we tightening the
belt for our own business, we're doing this now.
We would rather be early in cutting costs in the wake of the economy and the run that it has had.
We'd rather be early on this than be late. We don't want to be the last ones to do this."
Kretzmann: GM isn't in a position where they have a whole lot of flexibility.
It's a company with a lot of debt. They're burning cash.
And, as I mentioned, their profit margins are about as narrow as you can get and still be profitable.
It's not like they have a lot of time to tinker with things around the edges.
They really have to address those core issues now. In this case, they're ripping off the Band Aid.
They're saying, "Yes, we can simplify our product portfolio."
One thing I noticed in their press release is 75% of their global sales volume is expected
to come from just five vehicle architectures by the early part of 2020.
So, essentially focusing on select vehicles or architectures and building production facilities
around those architectures, rather than having a ton of different types of vehicle architectures out there.
It's just harder to have an efficient operation when you're trying to produce every vehicle under the sun.
Trying to simplify the product portfolio, simplify production, and in doing so,
reduce expenses, increase efficiency. This should end up saving them a lot of cash.
They're expecting cash savings of about $6 billion by 2020.
Part of that is lower capital expenditure costs.
Some of is just cost reductions, lower labor expenses, things like that.
Ripping off the Band Aid, as we mentioned, it's a painful time for those individuals
who are affected and losing their jobs.
But for GM, it's a company that really needs to do something drastic like this, if they
want to raise their chances of surviving over the long-term.
Hill: And I think if you're looking at automakers, two things to watch for over the next
two months are, one, Ford Motor and others, are they coming out with similar tightening of the belt?
Two, we are less than two months away from the North American International Auto Show,
which is held every January in Detroit.
I have to believe that this is going to be a topic of conversation for the media
at that event -- whether anyone follows suit or not.
It's almost like, if you're a reporter covering this industry, if Ford hasn't announced job cuts,
that's probably one of the first questions you're asking their executives at the event next January.
Kretzmann: Absolutely.
This move from GM undoubtedly impacts the competitive landscape for North American automakers,
and potentially international automakers, as well.
Building cars is a really challenging and capital-intensive business.
These are companies with narrow profit margins.
You've got to do what you've got to do if you want to raise the odds that you will be
around over the long run.

15 Royal traditions Queen Elizabeth Broke for Meghan Markle | British Royal Family - Duration: 11:02.Fifteen royal traditions queen elizabeth ii broke for megan Markel
Megan Markel isn't your typical royal family member by any stretch? She's the first biracial
American divorcee to marry into the British royal family and marry a prince and potential heir to the throne
No less the Dutchess of Sussex has turned heads and inspired tons of gossip
Thanks to her refusal to follow well-established royal traditions, perhaps her husband Prince
Harry finds her lack of
Rule-following refreshing after all he's been described as the black sheep of the family and went through his own rebellious phase
But what about queen elizabeth ii what does she think of her grand daughter-in-law breaking protocol?
Shockingly, the queen isn't just accepting of megan Markel just the way she is
She even assists her with royal tradition breaking from time to time ahead
Check out all the royal traditions that queen elizabeth broke for. Megan Markel one
Christmases for royal family members only it's common knowledge that
The Queen takes Christmas very seriously
Royal family members are required to put in an appearance at their Sandringham Estate royal celebration
But typically no one is invited to join unless they're part of the family
that's what made it so surprising when megan Markel got invited to the
2017 royal Christmas gathering before she was technically married to Prince Harry for Christmas 2018
the Queen is even inviting Megan's mom Dorie Raglan to come to to the coat-of-arms honors the whole family an
Official coat of arms was created for Megan Markel in May 2018, but it didn't follow the tradition of including the whole family. For example
Kate Middleton's coat of arms references her mother's maiden name
But Megan's coat of arms is just for her this could be because there's so much family drama with Meghan's extended relatives
Megan markle's coat of arms features elements that represent her past including a blue background
symbolizing the Pacific Ocean and gold rays for the California sunshine
three
Divorcees don't get a church wedding
There was a time when men of the royal family weren't even allowed to marry someone who was divorced
That's how Queen Elizabeth became Queen in the first place when her uncle abdicated the throne to marry an American
Divorcee even though the rules are more relaxed now royal family members still don't get Church weddings when they marry someone who is divorced
When Prince Charles got remarried to Camilla, they had a simple civil ceremony that the Queen didn't attempt
But for Prince Harry and Megan Markel, Queen Elizabeth allowed a huge church wedding, even though Megan has been married before
For no Royals get married in May Queen, Victoria
Great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth believed in the superstition that it was unlucky to get married in the month of May
Married in May rue the day is the popular adage
She followed that's why it's so strange that the Queen approved Prince Harry and Megan Markel's May wedding date
The Queen's own sister Princess Margaret got married in May and eventually divorced
Ostensibly proving the myth the Queen must truly believe Megan and Harry can overcome the curse of May 5
The bride is called miss on the wedding invitations royal wedding invitations are exceedingly formal
Usually the bride is referred to as miss but that wouldn't have been appropriate for Megan Markel who has been married before
Instead the Queen approved the invitation that said Ms. Megan Markel in the UK
There's no period after miss 6 the bride's father walks her down the aisle at a royal wedding
Who could forget the drama surrounding Megan Markel and her father Thomas Markel right before the wedding?
Sources speculated for weeks on whether he would attend or not
And if he would be the one to give her away in the end her new father-in-law
Prince Charles walked Megan down the aisle a break in protocol that was approved by the Queen
7 the best man in the host give wedding speeches
traditionally the best man in the wedding host
Usually the Prince of Wales offer toasts at a formal royal wedding
But at Prince Harry and Megan markle's nuptial celebration, the bride herself was granted the opportunity to make a speech
Probably because she has a real way with words 8 grooms. Don't wear wedding rings
Most royal men don't we wedding rings Prince William doesn't and neither does Prince Philip or Prince Charles?
But perhaps Harry likes jewelry
Or maybe his new bride believed in the more American tradition of both men and women wearing wedding jewelry
No matter what. The reason Prince Harry wears a wedding ring in the Queen doesn't mind nine
royal weddings
Exclusively include British music there might not be much discussion about including music from other countries
When a British royal family member marries someone from the same country?
But in the instance of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex the bride had a few American songs
She wanted included in the ceremony the Queen gave the go-ahead to break the standard in this case 10
There's usually no garlic allowed. No garlic breath Queen Elizabeth doesn't just hate eating garlic
She despises it so much that she doesn't allow anyone in the royal family to eat it either
That's why it's so surprising that Prince Harry and Megan Markel were roasting a chicken with lots of garlic on the night
He proposed the pair didn't even try to hide their forbidden spice usage 11 Royals
Can't bare their shoulders. It's always been tradition that women of the royal family aren't permitted to expose their shoulders
So you can imagine the surprise
when the Duchess of Sussex arrived at her first
Trooping of the color a birthday celebration for Queen Elizabeth in an off-the-shoulder Carolina Herrera dress
Apparently the Queen let that rule slide for Megan Markel 12 wedge heels aren't allowed
Just like her dislike of garlic
The Queen of Horrors wedge style heels and most royal women would never Don them in her presence
But Megan Markel chose fashion sense over tradition when she wore them anyway
Apparently Kate Middleton has done the same and neither has been reprimanded for it
13 royal ladies wear hosiery
hosiery companies with suffering sales fell in love with Kate Middleton after all she helped increase sales and make
flesh-colored stock and cool again
But they don't have similar feeling for Megan Markel
even though royal women are supposed to cover their legs with stocking in public the duchess of sussex skipped out on
hosiery during her engagement photos
14 she crossed her legs incorrectly
It's no coincidence that all the ladies in the royal family crossed their legs the same way
This so-called Duchess slant involved in merely crossing the legs at the ankle and angling the legs
But Megan Markel attended a Buckingham Palace event and crossed her legs at the knee like she was used to doing
The Queen may not have loved it, but she didn't throw her out
15 Megan and Harry can't keep their hands off one another the rule may be unwritten
But it's still understood that public displays of affection
PDAs are strongly frowned upon that's why it's so shocking when the Duke of Duchess of Sussex are caught holding hands or even
kissing in public situations
Even if they've received a royal reprimand from the Queen it can't stop their love which manifests in a very physical way
Meagan markle's handbag might have broken royal protocol
All eyes were on Megan Markel as she stepped out on her first royal engagement on Friday with her soon-to-be husband, Prince Harry
Crowds gathered in Nottingham from as early as 6 a.m. In the freezing cold weather to catch a glimpse of the newly engaged couple
But according to one royal etiquette expert the American former actress may have broken royal protocol during the outing
During the outing Megan donned a burgundy and navy leather handbag by Scottish label strawberry
But etiquette expert Micah Meyer told Good Housekeeping royal family members
Usually carry a clutch rather than a handbag as a way of avoiding shaking hands with people with whom it might be awkward
Both the Queen and the Duchess of Cambridge are often seen with clutches or bags with just a small handle for this reason. She said
when the Duchess is at an event, she holds her bag in front of her in both, hence when shaking hands might be awkward or
She can place it in one hand to have the other free
She said adding it is never to be tucked under an arm or placed on the ground or table
However, etiquette expert William Hanson has also weighed in on the matter
previously telling the Daily Mail
This was not always necessary as there were other ways to achieve this often used by the Queen and other members of the royal family
It is protocol that you do not extend your hand to any member of the royal family
Blood royal or those who have married into the family unless their hand extends first
But a courteous smile at those whom she does not have time to shake hands will suffice
In any case one person that was thrilled about Megan's choice of accessory was Leanne hon loving
The 45 year old mother of four who started the handbag label strawberry with her husband in
2013 told The Telegraph she sent Megan a selection of the labels handbags a fortnight ago on a whim before the engagement
announcement
Yet she was as surprised as anyone when Megan stepped out on Friday to buting the navy and burgundy tote
which retails for
495 and sold out within minutes after being touched by what is being dubbed the Megan effect
It's just amazing for us. It really is the greatest a spokeswoman for the brand told The Telegraph
It was a fantastic surprise and we are really excited
We're suddenly incredibly busy
Many have hailed Megan as a natural after the outing
While she politely declined selfies as is protocol
she chatted with on lookers warmly introducing herself to them as Megan and
McGuire who brought her nearly three-year-old son Leo with her described how Meghan bent down to speak to the toddler
Telling him he was so brave to come out in the cold
She reached out again and grabbed my hand and said I'm so glad you braved it to stand in the cold. She said
She's such a natural
twenty year old my Schley litters
From California said Megan had recognized her accent and told her it's so lovely to meet a fellow Californian
I'm so excited to be here

11 Korean display technology information, 11 people indicted in leakage to China! - Duration: 6:06.11 Korean display technology information, 11 people indicted in leakage to China! (Translated by google.com)
As Korea Samsung Display 's OLED panel 3D laminate technology leaked to China,
Eleven people including the president of the affiliated company, former senior managing director and design team manager were charged.
According to the prosecution, we set up a camouflage company to deliver confidential information such as facility specifications and panel drawings provided by Samsung Electronics to China,
It is doubtful that he got 15.5 billion won (about 14 million dollars) unfairly to China.
The camouflage company used the president's brother as the representative director and made a factory with signs of cooperators.
Based on the data obtained from May to August, we have produced 3D laminating equipment and are suspected of exporting 16 units.
I found out that I tried exporting these eight additional units and failed.
Such technology is the core technology of edge panels where both ends of liquid crystal adopted in Galaxy Note 9 etc. are curved,
Samsung Electronics spent six years developing 38 engineers, 150 billion won (about $ 140 million).
He sold it at a price of only 1 / 10th.
Also, in preparation for the investigation, it was an organized and systematic crime such as using a phone call to deal with individual mail rather than internal mail.
This company is a manufacturer of mobile panel manufacturing equipment and automated equipment and was listed on KOSDAQ last December.
However, as the business performance deteriorated this year, I broke the confidentiality agreement with Samsung Electronics and was exporting core technology.
Samsung Electronics estimated sales loss of 6.5 trillion won (about $ 6.5 billion) for three years.

Korean reaction
In this way technology will catch up to China, but what is the difference between technology leakage and the salesman?
China is historical and realistically the enemy of this country 's impatient enemy.
A related person who handed over South Korea's pride to enemies is not enough to destroy the three families.
The technology leaker must be a death sentence with a salesman.
What country will be a country that can not develop without stealing others' skills What will G2 and hegemonia become?
That has not simply sold the technology. I sold the treasury of this country.
There are reasons why the card game will fight against China. It is sensible.
Such a crime is a crime to sell the country. It is necessary to amend the law.
Even if it is voluntary development, even if there is some disrespect, why did you develop the technology developed by sweating blood? We have to punish weighted.
Is this a crime? Even though the government told the core technology to be released.
The salesman must live in jail for thirty years after confiscation of property.
Such punishment will persist because punishment is light. Strengthen punishment!
Employment of young people is gone by such guys. If you really want employment policy, you should put them down.
I have to proudly disclose my identity by pushing the brand name of a salesman.
That's why China hates the Republic of Korea. It is a truly miserable and unknown tribe.
Surface laminate was the core technology? I can not help it.
Even though the National Intelligence Service preliminarily prevents such international crimes and domestic enemy acts and investigates it.
We must make a huge amount of damages for Samsung.
Previously LG Electronics executives grew 20 billion drastically and delivered tens of trillion won of technology to China ....

The idea of Japanese editors
Of course it is also evil for individuals to ignore the contract at the time of retirement and to pass information to Chinese companies for money,
To a listed company that has a confidentiality agreement to do like this ...
In the Korean media initially he was hiding the company name to protect suspects, but it was revealed that it was a top-tec company in economic news and others.
Although it was a suspect stage, it was a related company of Samsung and there were no equipment manufacturers listed on KOSDAQ last December.
Top Tec's share price fell more than 20%. Probably it will be a stop-stop.
It was found that Chinese display companies are also four companies including BOE. Although it was completely frowned at the beginning this time, it was released.
Three companies other than BOE are limited, but there is no specific mention of anything.
It is a mystery why Korean media made it public like this. After all, the suspect was clearly understood from the company name rather than the usual one.
This is a serious crime that betrays the state as well. How can we put down the lid?
Even large-sized OLED panels also gave new power to China display companies, which are highly chasing.
It is not unusual for manufacturers listed on to sell others' souls due to their sales.
It can not be tidied up by the word moral hazard any longer. The people who lost their souls are terribly terrible.
Thank you for your viewing.
If you do not mind, please evaluate the movie.
Either good evaluation, bad evaluation, it does not matter.
