Youtube daily Mar 4 2017

Hey there, Alex here.

12th of July, 2013.

I saw an article on the Verge that gave what was the clearest look at the rumoured Google

X phone from motorola.

It had a stormtrooper theme going on, with a curve on the back of the phone that looked

so ergonomically sexy.

It was love at first sight.

Anyway, a few weeks later, the phone was officially announced, and after seeing what it could

do, I knew at that point in time I had to get this phone.

You know how some people like to document happy occasions in their life?

I did that when I got my Moto X. I made a video professing my love for the phone.

Sadly, like all puppy love, it eventually came to an end, when I felt that my needs

were no longer being satisfied.

It was a painful breakup, but it had to done.

But you never forget something you love that much.

So let's take a walk down memory lane, and take another look at what made the 1st generation

Moto X so special.

Have you ever felt like the design of phones these days are getting a little bit boring?

You can only choose from a small set of predetermined colours, and most manufacturers tend to stick

to a pretty similar colour palette.

With the Moto X though, you can truly make the phone your own with your favourite colours,

no matter how bad your taste may be.

I went with a more conservative look myself with an all black design with blue accents,

which isn't the most creative or exciting option.

But it's understated, and I like my phones that way.

If you've customised one yourself, you'll know how special it feels to know the phone

was made just for you, no matter how small the customisations were.

The phone is unapologetically plastic, but it still has a nice and solid feel to it.

That curve on the back, that little dimple in the middle, and the grippy body, all translate

into a phone that begs to be used naked.

Best of all, this is a phone that I can use one-handed with ease.

Despite having a 4.7-inch screen, it's actually not that much bigger than the iPhone SE.

The moto x is not just all looks and no brains, it's actually pretty smart too.

Motorola didn't go too crazy with the customisations on the software.

It runs pretty much a vanilla version of Android with just a sprinkle of Motorola's special

toppings.

One of them would be this very useful way of showing me new notifications.

If it's on the desk, or when it detects that i just pulled the phone out of my pocket,

the screen comes to life to tell me what's new.

From there i can preview the messages, jump into it, or just swipe it away.

Because it's using an AMOLED screen, so only the areas that lights up uses power,

so it's pretty power efficient.

But if i don't even want to get my lazy ass out of bed, I can even ask the moto x

to read out my notifications to me.

"Wake up, Moto X. What's new?"

"Hello, Alex. The time is 12:10.

Alex Hong sent you a Google Hangouts message at 11:55 saying let's meet for lunch."

You know how you can talk to your phones these day, and get it to do stuff without ever touching it?

Well, Motorola was one of the first companies that got it working, and you can even set

a custom launch phrase for it.

Something you still can't do on other phones.

There is this other feature which I think is worth mentioning too, and that's the

quick launch camera.

It may not be a unique feature, or the fastest way to launch the camera these days.

But I still think it's the easiest way, since I don't have to look for a particular

button on the phone.

Being a phone that's over 3 years old now, I don't think anyone is expecting the phone

to keep up with the Google Pixel.

But even back when it was new, it wasn't exactly packing the largest guns.

Pretty much everything about the phone in terms of the hardware were pretty average

for its time.

Motorola did do some nifty optimisations to ensure a smooth user experience, but there

are things you simply can't make up for in software.

The smaller battery means that it can barely last me a day of use; the 720p screen has

vibrant colours, but is lacking a bit in outdoor visibility; and the 10MP rear camera is simply

just average at best.

Fast forward 3 years, and these things really don't age well.

But if you're just talking about the core experience, the Moto X has aged remarkably

well all things considered.

Even though the hardware is no longer relevant today, it still performs well enough for most

day to day tasks.

I'm actually still using this Moto X as a spare phone to run some simple apps and games.

You know what the Moto X is?

I think it is Google's first attempt at making a Pixel.

It is basically Google taking a more opinionated approach with Android.

If you ask me to compile a list of milestone devices for the Android ecosystem, I'll have

the moto x on that list.

That's how special I think it is.

But you know, in the end, the Moto X is a bitter-sweet reminder of what Motorola could

achieve under Google.

Since Lenovo has taken over Motorola, it seems like the magic that I once felt with the Moto

X is no longer there.

I can only hope Lenovo will do right by the Moto brand in time to come.

Thanks for watching this video, sorry that it got a little bit depressing at the end.

I just can't help it.

Anyway If you like it be sure to give me a thumbs up and share the video with your friends.

Thanks, and see you guys on the next one.

"Chiến tranh Toàn Dân" Chống Người Hồi Trung Quốc | Trung Quốc Không Kiểm Duyệt - Duration: 6:14.

On this episode of China Uncensored:

Move over, Global War on Terror,

now it's the People's War or Terror!

Hi, welcome to China Uncensored.

I'm your host Chris Chappell.

China is a land of diversity.

There are 56 officially recognized ethnic groups!

Although about 92% of people

are from the Han ethnic group.

But the important thing is that they all live in harmony

under the loving guidance of the Chinese Central Government.

Like Tibetans!

Those rooftop snipers are there to keep everyone safe.

Same goes for the less-talked about groups

like the Uyghurs,

a Turkic minority in the Xinjiang region.

Thousands of heavily armed troops

have marched through cities in Xinjiang

over the past week,

in mass military demonstrations.

As the region's deputy Communist Party chief says,

it's to show "the caring and strong leadership

of the Communist Party Central Committee."

Also to show that "all separatist activities and all terrorists

shall be smashed to pieces."

How will they do that?

With the "powerful fist of the People's Democratic Dictatorship" of course!

You know about the Chinese military's,

um, benevolence, in Tibet.

People in the West are pretty familiar with the political situation there,

thanks in part to Gwyneth Paltrow-era Brad Pitt,

and notorious foam visor lover, the Dalai Lama.

Well, the same kind of Chinese military "benevolence"

happens on a regular basis in Xinjiang, too.

Xinjiang is a giant region in Western China

with roughly the land area of Alaska.

Like Alaska, it's mostly uninhabitable.

And they also can see Russia from their backyards.

But unlike Alaska,

Xinjiang's reality shows have never really taken off.

Sand Road Donkeys:

Truly an underappreciated gem.

But the ethnic Uyghurs living in Xinjiang

don't get much media attention

compared to Tibetans.

Why?

Well, they don't have a lovable religious leader

to be their spokesperson.

And it might also be because they're Muslim.

Not Muslim extremists generally;

mostly moderate Muslims.

But the Communist Party doesn't like moderate Islam

any more than they like moderate Buddhism.

Any system of belief in a higher power

is seen as a threat.

So how to solve this problem?

For decades, the Communist Party has flooded the region

with non-Muslim ethnic Han Chinese.

Which has now increased to 38% of Xinjiang's population.

And the CCP has recently implemented a loving,

big brother system of mass surveillance

like "grid management, face recognition software

and big data analytics."

And of course,

who could forget all the things the CCP

has banned in Xinjiang at various times,

because they're too dangerous:

Beards, veils, traditional clothing, the internet,

and even, for civil servants,

fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.

Hey, fasting is dangerous.

You're not yourself when you're hungry.

I'm looking at you, Betty White.

Now it used to be that Uyghurs who were not fully supportive

of their benevolent communist overlords

were called "splittists"—

the same term used for Tibetans.

But after 9/11,

the Communist Party adopted a more politically savvy label:

terrorists.

According to Beijing Cream,

"Everything—from the theft of sheep to a land seizure protest

to a fight with knives—

can now be labeled as 'terrorism,'

as long as Uyghurs and Han are involved in the conflict."

It's lead to what state-run media are calling

"the People's War on Terrorism."

And if your neighbor turns you in for being a terrorist sympathizer,

which they get a reward for by the way,

you might find yourself subjected to,

shall we say,

"enhanced interrogation techniques."

Unless you then turn in your other neighbors for being terrorists.

I mean, that technique worked so well

during the Cultural Revolution.

That's why there's not a single counter-revolutionary left in China today!

Fortunately, the Party has put up colorful propaganda

to educate the Uyghurs about potential terrorist activities.

Like sharing banned information on video CDs.

Or installing a satellite dish.

News is dangerous.

And don't wear veils.

You'll be much happier without.

And if those doves become a problem,

why, there's always friendly soldiers nearby to shoot them down.

So if you see a group of Uyghurs

happily reading Party propaganda

in front of a Chinese flag,

you can bet it has something to do with

the Xinjiang party chief saying,

"We shall load our guns, draw our swords from their sheaths,

throw hard punches and relentlessly beat,

and strike hard without flinching

at terrorists."

All under the watchful eye of the 40,000 security cameras

set up in Xinjiang's streets, public places, and mosques.

And now the latest news,

they're going to use GPS surveillance

to keep track of every single car in the region.

This is not to say there are no real terrorist problems in Xinjiang.

It's just that when the persecution of Muslims in Xinjiang

becomes severe,

I imagine that Islamic extremists around the world

will have an easier time convincing otherwise peaceful Uyghurs that

violently rising up against the Chinese government

is their only option.

But don't worry though,

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has a plan.

"Build a 'wall of bronze and iron'

to fight against terrorism."

A wall?

This sounds like a job for Matt Damon.

So what do you think of the "People's War on Terrorism" in Xinjiang?

Leave your comments below.

Thanks for watching this episode of China Uncensored.

Once again I'm your host Chris Chappell,

see you next time.
