GIVING PEOPLE A WAY OUT OF BIG

SUR, AND IT WOULDN'T TAKE LON

.

>> DEPENDING ON YOUR FITNESS 20

: 450 PEOPLE STUCK IN BIG SUR

BETWEEN THE BRIDGE CLOSURE TO

THEIR NORTH AND LANDSLIDES TO

THEIR SOUTH.

>> EXTREMELY DIRE.

FAMILIES ARE TORN APART WE HAVE

PEOPLE LIVING ON THE OTHER SIDE

WITH SCHOOL KIDS JUST GOING BA

FANFARE, SUPPORT AND ALSO

OPPOSITION.

STUDENTS AT BURBANK HIGH SCHOOL

ARE NOW GETTING SOME EXTRA

PROTECTION, EVEN IF THEY ARE

HERE IN THE COUNTRY ILLEGALLY.

>> THE SACRAMENTO CITY UNIFIED

SCHOOL DISTRICT WANTS TO MAKE

SURE THAT UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS

AND THEIR PARENTS KNOW THAT WE

WELCOME EVERYONE ON OUR SCHOOL

SITES.

AND THAT NO POLICY ON THE

FEDERAL LEVEL IS GOING TO STOP

US FROM PROTECTING THOSE

STUDENTS.

MIKE: STARTING TOMORROW SIGNS

LIKE THIS WILL BE GOING UP

DISTRICT WIDE.

ANNOUNCING THE SAFE HAVEN

POLICY.

>> RIGHT NOW WE'RE LOOKING AT

DISTRIBUTING 50,000 OF THESE

CARDS THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.

MIKE: AND THESE KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

CARDS WILL BE HANDED OUT TO

STUDENTS, PARENTS AND TEACHERS

ACROSS THE DISTRICT.

SAFE HAVEN MEANS THAT AGENTS

FROM ICE IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS

ENFORCEMENT ARE PROHIBITED FROM

ENTERING CAMPUS WITHOUT SIGNED

AUTHORIZATION FROM THE

SUPERINTENDENT.

OF THE 43,000 STUDENTS IN THE

DISTRICT IT'S ESTIMATED THAT 1

IN 5 WILL BENEFIT FROM ADDED

PROTECTIONS INCLUDING LEGAL

PROFESSIONALS ON CAMPUS.

>> I FEEL LIKE THAT'S GREAT

BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE EVERYBODY

SHOULD GET A CHANCE TO GET THEIR

EDUCATION.

MIKE: AND TEACHERS WE SPOKE WITH

HER ALSO SUPPORTIVE.

>> I FEEL STUDENTS SHOULDN'T

HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT THERE'S

ALREADY ENOUGH FOR THEM TO

WORRY.

MIKE: BUT OPPONENTS INCLUDE

SACRAMENTO SHERIFF SCOTT JONES

WHO TOLD US THAT FEDERAL LAW

TRUMPS THE DISTRICT'S SAFE HAVEN

>> IMMIGRATION BY ALL ACCOUNTS

INARGUABLY IS A FEDERAL ISSUE.

THEN FEDERAL LAW PREVAILS.

SO I'M NOT SURE HOW A SCHOOL

DISTRICT OR EVEN A STATE FRANKLY

CAN DECLARE THEMSELVES SOME SORT
