Hello everyone!
And welcome to a brand new episode of MajestiComic.
Today's episode is about a newer character in the DC Universe, so it's possible that
not everyone will be familiar with her yet.
However, she is a very important character, because she represents a lot of important
things, like diversity, female empowerment, the strength of family, and a deep connection
with nature and the world around us.
Before we start, though, I just want to apologize in advance if I pronounce any of the names
wrong!
They're kind of tricky this time.
The character of Equinox was created in 2014 by Jeff Lemire for the Justice League United
line of comics.
Lemire wanted to create a character that represented the native tribes of his home country of Canada,
and he found inspiration in the Cree community of Moose Factory in Ontario.
His main inspiration, though, came from the life of a thirteen year old Cree activist
named Shannen Koostachin.
Shannen fought for better education for the aboriginal communities in Canada, and she
inspired millions with her spirit.
Unfortunately, though, she died in a car crash in 2010, when she was just fifteen years old.
To honor her memory, Lemire created Miiyahbin Marten, a.k.a. Equinox, a strong, spirited
teenaged superhero with powers based on the seven pillars of the Cree tribe, and a blue,
black, and white outfit that was inspired by a shirt Shannen Koostachin wore in one
of her most famous photos.
In order to write a better, more realistic storyline for Equinox, Lemire visited the
community of Moose Factory often, to learn more about the Cree culture and to give art
lessons to local children.
The things that he learned while in Moose Factory were the driving force behind the
powers that he gave to Equinox, which all have to do with the seasons and a connection
with nature.
Miiyahbin Marten (affectionately known as "Mii")'s story begins when she is just
sixteen years old.
She lives on Moose Factory Island, and is returning home from school when her incredible
powers manifest themselves for the first time.
Attacked by a creature known as the Whitago, the boogeyman of the Cree culture, Mii is
compelled, for reasons unknown to her, to say the word "Keewatin."
Keewatin roughly translates to "Northern Blizzard" in English, and saying this word
transforms her into Equinox, a superheroine who can then shoot a blast of blue energy
at the monster attacking her.
Later on, when Mii has returned to her normal, human state, she and her friend Heather see
a battle between the Justice League of America and an alien adversary.
Mii and Heather return to the site of the battle after it is over, and find that it
is an abandoned NATO base.
Before they can investigate further, Mii is grabbed by a creature and dragged into a cave.
She wakes up frozen to the wall, and is confronted by a man who calls her his granddaughter.
She tells him that he is not her grandfather, and he replies mysteriously that he is quote,
"one of the Seven."
Mii then hears the Whitago coming back, and she begs him for help.
In response, he tells her that only she can save herself from the Whitago by saying that
one special word.
He also tells her that within all of the Cree people, there lives a piece of the Seven,
a group of seven spirits that include bravery, humility, truth, wisdom, respect, honesty,
and love.
Within Miiyahbin, though, there also lives the spirit of a beast… called the Whitago.
Outside of the cave, Mii's friend Heather is discovered by Alanna Strange, a member
of the Justice League.
She helps Heather to get into the cave to find Mii, but Mii doesn't want them to help
her to break free of the ice that is encasing her.
She is afraid of the powers that come when she says that one strange word, and she doesn't
know what she will become if she embraces them.
In the end, though, she must save her friends, because she alone can defeat the Whitago.
So, she says the word "Keewatin" and seemingly destroys the Whitago before passing out.
Once she has recovered, Mii learns that her grandmother once carried the mantle of Equinox,
a being guided by the seven guiding spirits of Cree society, as described before.
She also tells her, though, that her long lost father was once a Whitago, a creature
driven by seven completely different, much darker spirits: control, aggression, deception,
greed, selfishness, dominion, and fear.
According to her grandmother, the Whitago can never be killed, but it can be prevented
from harming others.
Armed with this knowledge, Equinox returned to the cave where the Whitago lurked, and
fought the fear with her own bravery.
Using the powers she now embraced, she was able to draw her father's spirit out of
the Whitago, and set it free.
Alanna Strange, who accompanied her on this journey of self-discovery, was impressed by
her growth and her bravery, and this led to Equinox becoming a part of the current Justice
League.
