Day seven! We are already awake, it's 3PM, and we're about to start the soundcheck.

All the gear is almost set up, the drums still need some work... but the guitars are making noise already.

There has been a cold making the rounds in our crew, Kapu is probably the sickest one at the moment.

But that's part of the job, sometimes you catch a cold on the road.

What else... we have a sold out show tonight, it'll be nice to play here in Dortmund.

So, we're getting the day started. Really looking forward to the evening!

Day eight is coming to an end, as is our first week!

Starting week two here in Mannheim.

We had a day off today, and we got to see the live show of the legendary progressive rock band Focus.

They played right there in Alte Seilerei, where we'll also play tomorrow.

We've really enjoyed the day off, and it was great to see the show and meet the guys.

So we are good to go... oh, we also performed on a local TV show today, which was fun and exciting.

It's always a bit exciting to be on television... Hi mom!

So, now we're just relaxing and waiting for tomorrow, and hoping we too will have a good gig here!

OK! Day nine is almost past us, our gig in Mannheim was very nice!

I'm here at backstage doing my usual aftershow routine, -

ironing my stage clothes, which are soaking wet after a hot gig like tonight.

This way I don't have to put wet clothes in my suitcase. I'm just ironing them dry.

It's been the same every night now.

It's difficult to dry your clothes on the bus without any coat hangers.

But we do have this option. Ironing!

Our next stop is.... Cologne! We'll be driving into the night again.

Tomorrow will be another day and ironing session! Jani, what did you say?

Yes, can you tell us something about your ironing settings?

Well, I have the heat set to "two", because my shirt is made of some kind of fabric mix, whatever this is...

It's like shiny and stuff.

You're supposed to use a really low temp for this, but my shirt is kind of worn out...

And if I want to get it dry tonight, I actually need to make the iron pretty hot.

So right now I'm setting it to "three", the max level.

How about the moisturizing spray function?

Oh no, you don't want to use that, as it will just increase the shirt's dampness.

You see, I'm not actually trying to iron the shirt.

Olli: I'm just vaporizing the moisture. Jani: Oh yes, I see. Right, right...

Jani: That's an expert working right there! Olli: Oh, yes.

Europe did the world a favor - Duration: 4:47.

Hello there. Marxism and communism are at

odds in many ways with those who have

come to be called social justice

warriors. I've always called them the

pseudo left or pseudos for short. But I must

say that this new term is very catchy.

But anyway, today I will just focus on

one area a difference and this concerns

how we feel about the fact that over 500

years ago while emerging from the Middle

Ages Europe developed ocean-going

sailing ships. This opened up the

prospect of plunder and trade on a

global scale. This was the original

globalization. For most of those who

encountered these white monsters it was

not a fun experience. Social justice

warriors do a lot of hand wringing about

this and they are right to point out the

wickedness of the whole process.

However, Marx recognized the dual

character of western expansion. He was

disgusted by European barbarity and

hypocrisy, but he also saw their

marauding as the means of eliminating the

fast frozen and backward conditions that

prevailed in the rest of the world. It

was necessary if the world was to move

forward. In particular communism could

not have emerged out of these backward

conditions. Let's look at some of the

things that Marx had to say on the

subject. In a letter to Engels of October

8 1858 he wrote: "The proper task of bourgeois

society is the creation of the world

market at least in outline and of the

production based on that market. Since

the world is round, the colonisation of

California and Australia and the opening

up of China and Japan would seem to have

completed this process." In 1853 he had a

number of articles in the New York Daily News

which are of interest and I'll read out

four quotes. Quote number one. "England it

is true it's causing a social revolution

in Hindustan [by

that he means India], was actuated only

by the vilest interests and was stupid

in her manner of enforcing them. But that

is not the question. The question is, can

mankind fulfill its destiny without a

fundamental revolution in the social

state of Asia? if not whatever may have

been the crimes of England she was the

unconscious tool of history in bringing

about that revolution," Quote number two.

"England has to fulfill a double mission

in India: one destructive the other

regenerating - the annihilation of old

Asiatic society, and the laying of the

material foundation of Western society

in Asia." Quote number three. "It is almost

needless to observe that, in the same measure

in which opium has obtained the

sovereignty over the Chinese, the Emperor

and his staff of pedantic mandarins has

become dispossessed of their own

sovereignty. It would seem as though

history had first to make this whole

people drunk before it could rouse them

out of their hereditary stupidity." And

finally quote number four. "All these

dissolving agencies acting together on

the finances, the morals, the industry, the

political structure of China receive

their full development under the English

Canon in 1840, which broke down the

authority of the Emperor and forced the

celestial Empire into contact with the

terrestrial world. Complete isolation was

the prime condition of the preservation

of the old China. That isolation having

come to a violent end by the medium of

England, dissolution must follow as

surely as that of any mummy carefully

preserved in a hermetically sealed

coffin, whenever it is brought into contact

with the open air." Of course, in the case

of the Americas, Australia and a few

other places, the locals were not simply

shaken up by the experience, they were

brutally exterminated or pushed to the

margins with the large scale arrival of

European settlers.

To the descendants of these original

people, there is of course no going back.

Indeed their descendants will share with

others a communist future made possible

by modern capitalist society. For more

reading and sources for the quotes

linked to below. See you next time.
