I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation of the Smittybilt
SRC Tube Doors, fitting all 2007 and up JKs.
There is, of course, a set available for the front of your JK and a second set available
for the rear.
If those of you with a four-door are interested in getting all four doors, the doors are sold
as a pair.
Today, we're going to talk through the installation of these doors which is a very simple one
out of three wrench installation.
These ones are a little bit more complicated than some of the other tube doors because
of the adjustability that Smittybilt builds into the hinge mechanism.
However, again, still a very simple one out of three wrench install that can be done in
around an hour.
We're also going to talk through some of the features and the construction of these doors.
One of the unique things, and one of the best things, about owning a Wrangler is the fact
that you can take the doors off and have an open air driving experience unlike you can
get with any other vehicle.
Now, some of us like to have that open air driving experience.
However, we want a little bit more security whether because you have kids riding in your
Jeep with you or you just want something to brace against when you're off-road.
Or, possibly you just want a little bit more of a secure feeling while still having the
open air feel.
So, that's where a tube door comes in.
These ones from Smittybilt, in particular, have a slightly different latching mechanism,
a little bit different hinge design, all which make them a really nice option if you're looking
for a tube door.
Now, because of the way this latch is, you do have this piece of steel here.
Where other tubular doors give a little bit more of an open feel, they're just more of
a bar.
So, it comes down to a little bit of aesthetics but also a little bit of functionality, whether
you choose to go with these Smittybilt doors or one of the other doors on the market.
So, as I said, there are a couple of things that make these doors unique when you compare
them to some of the other tube doors on the market.
And one is right here in the hinges.
A lot of companies will weld the door pin hinges right onto the door.
Now, if they weld them correctly, the door will just drop into place, and you may have
to do a little bit of adjusting on the latch side.
However, if they're not welded correctly if they get bent in shipping, then you are going
to have a problem getting your door to fit properly and to latch properly.
With these doors here, the hinge is a separate piece from the door.
They get bolted on.
And as you can see, these holes here are a little bit oblong which allow you to adjust
the door up and down, make sure it's good and level, and make sure that the latch mechanism
hits the strike pin on the body of the Jeep and that the doors latch properly.
So, that's one big difference with these doors versus some of the others on the market.
And the other is right over here.
Again, this looks like it may just be there for style from the back side.
But if you actually flip the door around, you'll see the latching mechanism.
And a lot of doors will have latching mechanisms these days.
And oftentimes they will be on a slider hole so you can make your adjustment.
This latch mechanism is really internal to this piece of steel here.
It has a slide which is how you release the latch instead of lifting up on it.
A lot of the latches seem like a re-purposed gate latch almost where this is much more
of a built in, more of a substantial latching mechanism which is something I really do like.
Now, these latches are not lockable.
Some of you might be saying it's a tube door.
Somebody can reach in or climb over it and get inside my Jeep anyway.
Who cares if it's lockable?
Well, the nice thing about a locking tube door is that if the door is closed and locked,
you can't just open the door and lift it off the hinges and take it away.
Now this, as well as other tube doors on the market, do have a bolt that you can install.
But a lot of us take our tube doors on and off a lot and don't always reuse that bolt.
So, by being able to lock the door when you are walking away from it, you know that the
doors are still going to be there when you get back and that they're not going to be
the ones that are walking away.
Again, this isn't a lockable latch.
So, if that's something that is a big deal to you, maybe you do want to look at one of
the other brands.
These doors do have a rubber bump stop on them which is a nice feature.
It allows the door to have something a little bit more firm to close to and actually gives
a little bit of back pressure on your latch which can help with alleviating any sort of
rattling.
And while I do have a rear door here on the table, if I had a front door I would be able
to show you the factory mirror mount.
So, there is an area to mount your factory door mirrors directly onto your tube doors
keeping you legal, keeping you from having to purchase a mirror mover bracket that will
put that factory mirror up on the A-pillar or an aftermarket quick release mirror that
goes on the A-pillar.
This allows you to use your factory mirrors which is a very nice feature.
As we said, the install for this is a very simple one out of three wrenches.
You're going to be able to get these installed in about an hour.
The first time you install these, it's a little bit more complicated because you do have the
adjustment of the hinges to do.
Again, not a big deal but it will take a little bit more time.
Once that's done, these are going to drop on even easier the second time and all of
the other times that you install and uninstall these doors.
So, of course, the first step is removing your factory doors.
You'll have to disconnect your factory wiring harness, your limit strap, and the retention
nuts if you have them in place, and then just lift the door off of the hinges.
From there, you can install the retention strap for this door on the tub side of the
Jeep.
Go ahead and loosely attach both of the hinge pins onto the door, and then set the door
in place latching it.
Once it's latched, you can take a look.
Make sure it's level.
Make sure it's square.
And go ahead and tighten down your hinges.
Try the door a couple of times.
Make sure it latches properly.
And then, really torque down those bolts.
And that's the last time you're going to have to do that unless they come out of adjustment
from vibration, you're not going to have to mess with the hinges again.
After that, you're pretty much finished up.
These doors are going to be installed.
If you want to install the retention nut, you can go ahead and do that.
Again, that'll help with keeping the doors on your Jeep because these aren't lockable.
That retention nut will keep somebody from very easily lifting them off.
Of course, they could still remove them with a wrench.
With the front doors, you'll go ahead and install the brackets in your factory mirrors.
But overall, very, very easy install.
Let's face it, these are designed to come on and off, whether it's once a year if you're
in an area where it doesn't rain a lot, and you want to install these all summer.
Or if you're going to be throwing these on on the weekends, when you go trail riding
or when the weather is nice, these are designed to very easily install and uninstall from
your Jeep.
From a price standpoint, these come in right around where a lot of the other tube doors
are priced, right around the $300 a pair mark.
So, if you have a four-door, you're getting four doors, $600.
If you have a two-door, or you're just looking for front doors for your four-door, $300 for
a pair of these doors.
And for what you get, I think these are very fairly priced.
As I said before, the latch mechanism is a lot more substantial than it is on some of
the other doors that I've seen.
And even though there's a little bit of setup the first time you put these doors on your
Jeep because of the way the hinges are built in an adjustable fashion.
I really like that because I've seen too many reviews, I've seen too many people who get
their doors home, and they don't fit quite right because the hinges were warped a little
bit when they were welded, or they were damaged in shipping.
Now you're trying to bend it, or you're having to ship it back and get another one.
This adjustability gets rid of all of that.
Ensures that you're getting a door that is rattle free, that's going to latch tightly
and latch properly, and all for just a couple more minutes the first time you install the
door.
So, overall for the price, I really like these doors.
So, if you're somebody who likes that open air feel of not having doors on your Jeep,
but you're looking for something to brace against when you're off-road.
You're looking for a little bit more secure feeling, or you're looking to make sure that
pets and kids stay inside the Jeep, this is going to be a nice hybrid option giving you
that open air feel but still having a door in place.
These are priced fairly, and I like the adjustability that's built right in.
So, that's my review of the Smittybilt SRC Tube Doors, fitting all 2007 and up JKs that
you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.
