Hello and welcome to ComicJay where I steal Drake's meme and my name is Jay.
* Loud Thunder * It was a joke.
Come on man.
Drake has Thor's hammer.
(He likes to shock me with it).
Let's talk about Drax The Destroyer, right after the bump.
Created by Jim Starlin (who also created Gamora), Drax
the Destroyer first appeared in Iron Man #55 in 1973, and later earned recurring roles
in Captain Marvel and Warlock throughout the 70s and 80s.
They were by no means big roles and in a couple of cases when I looked up the exact issue,
Drax was only on one page in the book.
In this issue of Captian Marvel he's in a single panel.
His original self was killed in Avengers #220 in 1982, before being brought back in 1990
in Silver Surfer Volume 3 Issue #37.
Drax's origin story in the comics is maybe one of the biggest departures from his movie
version.
In the comics, Drax is actually a human named Arthur Douglas, an ordinary family guy...
Nope! Nope!
Copyright! Copyright!
An ordinary family man, whose car is attacked during a drive through the desert by Thanos
(who thinks he has been seen humans).
His wife and daughter are killed in the process, and Arthur's body is effectively destroyed.
Thanos' father Mentor, and the Titan god Kronos, in order to create a potential opponent
for Thanos, takes Arthur's soul and places it in a new, supernaturally strong body.
With that in mind, Drax the Destroyer is created, his sole purpose in life being to kill Thanos.
During his attempts to find and kill Thanos, Drax runs afoul of a number of Marvel superheroes.
The first time he meets Iron Man, he helps Tony Stark fight Thanos and the Blood Brothers.
He also holds a grudge against Captain Marvel for killing Thanos before he could, and battles
him several times in the comics.
However, when Thanos rematerializes himself later, Drax wanders the stars searching for
him.
However, another potential threat to the universe comes in the form of Arthur Douglas' own
daughter Heather, who actually survived Thanos' attack on their car and was taken in by Mentor
to become Moondragon.
Initially, Moondragon fights for good, helping Thor defeat a mind-altered Drax the Destroyer;
she and Drax then travel the universe in search of knowledge.
However, on the planet Ba-Banis, Moondragon uses her powers to stop a deadly planetary
civil war, and sets herself up there as a goddess-like dictator.
After calling the Avengers to help him stop her, Moondragon forces Drax's spirit to
exit his body, effectively killing him.
That's not the end of Drax in the comics, though; he is brought back by Mistress Death
and given even greater power by Kronos.
He joins the Infinity Watch along with Adam Warlock, and is tasked with guarding the Power
Gem.
It's during this time that Drax's appearance and personality changes as well; his superhuman
strength and power is somewhat enhanced, and he also carries all the emotional and mental
scarring of his initial death, leaving him with a slightly reduced mental capacity.
In the Annihilation comics storyline, Drax develops an affinity for knives (much like
in the movie version), and sees yet another physical change, reducing in size to something
more like his original form.
After his work in helping the original Nova, Richard Rider, get back up to full fighting
strength and defeat the Annihilation Wave, Star-Lord recruits him to join the Guardians
of the Galaxy.
The Drax of the movies is, well, a little simpler.
No longer is he a resurrected human, but the last of his race who blames Ronan the Accuser
(and Thanos) for killing his wife and daughter.
He loves knives and takes things far, far too literally, making himself a much more
comedic personality to fit the lighter tone of the films.
Even so, he still loves destroying and hates Thanos, which is something both versions of
the character can certainly agree on.
So jump down to to the comments section below and let me know:
Does it bother you that Drax's story was changed so much in the MCU?
What do you think of his MCU redesign?
Did Drax take your favorite knife?
I hear he's bad for that.
I want to take a moment to say thank you to all the wonderful nerds that came over from
NerdSync this time.
I'm happy to have all of you.
There's an ongoing contest you can enter, if you want.
The prize is a $20 Amazon gift card.
Just check out Sunday's video called Top 10 Marvel Comics Alternate Universes and Timelines,
tweet the video and tag me in the video @parksjay.
When we did this last week the only six people entered so the odds are pretty good compared
to larger channels.
This is the 3rd video in our quest to do a 5 video week.
We have two days and two videos left and I already have scripts and some assets for those
videos.
By the time you see this video I'll also have them recorded, so it looks like we just might
make it.
It's a real grind though so I may scale back to three a week going forward and maybe make
them 10-12 minutes again.
That way we can keep YouTube happy with frequent uploads and 10 minute videos while also giving
me a break between releases.
Either way the one thing we will not do is return to a video every 7-10 days.
Thanks for watching you Fancy Nerds, until next time, I'm Jay Parks.
