Nestlé: 150 Years of Food Industry Dominance - Duration: 7:41.
We live in the most plentiful times known to mankind.
Whereas in the past our ancestors had to spend most of their waking hours tirelessly working
for their food, today we are just one click away from an endless slew of delicious goodness.
It might seem strange, then, to discover that today, when the choice of brands couldn't
be higher, the companies behind the food industry have never been so few.
That's why today we'll be taking a look at the world's largest food company, Nestle.
The year is 1866, and two entrepreneurs on the opposite sides of Switzerland were getting
ready to start their own companies.
The man on the right was Charles Page, a former US consul who had fallen in love with Switzerland's
green meadows and fat cows.
His dream was to build a condensed milk factory, hoping to mimic the success of the first such
factory in the world built ten years earlier by Gail Borden in the US.
Charles had previously sent his brother George to that factory to try to learn more about
Borden's method, which involved evaporating the water in the milk and adding sugar.
Together the brothers founded the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company, with the hope of becoming
the British Empire's primary supplier of canned milk.
At the same time, 100 miles southwest of the Page brothers lived Henri Nestle, a German
immigrant with an equally fervent passion for dairy products.
As one of fourteen children in the Nestle family, Henri was painfully aware of the high
infant mortality rate across Europe.
To help solve the problem, Henri spent several years developing an affordable breast milk
substitute by combining milk with grain and sugar.
From 1867 onwards, Henri's Farine Lactée became indispensable to Swiss society.
By 1871, his infant formula was sold throughout Western Europe, with his factory churning
out over 1,000 cans every day.
Just two years later, Henri was selling over 2,000.
In 1877, however, a new competitor rose up to challenge Nestle.
While Henri was earning pennies selling his infant formula in Western Europe, the Page
brothers had made a fortune selling their condensed milk across the world.
They had become the primary supplier of the British Empire, as they had originally intended,
but by 1877 they had also spread to the US and Continental Europe.
Eager to expand their business, the Page brothers started selling their own infant formula.
To Henri, this was declaration of war, and so he promptly released Nestle-branded condensed
milk in retaliation, starting a relentless price war that would rage on for almost 30
years.
Although both companies grew during this period, competition hurt their bottom line immensely.
Henri and the Page brothers were proud men and were unwilling to concede, but by 1905,
when all three of them were dead, the directors of the two companies agreed to a merger.
The newly created company had a total of 20 factories and over the next decade Nestle
would spread to every inhabited continent.
The advent of World War 1 seemed advantageous at first, since the world's militaries knew
how valuable canned milk would be.
Pretty soon, however, Nestle realized that they would have no way to service this new
demand: Raw material shortages and international embargoes
left Nestle's 20 factories empty.
In response, Nestle started buying factories in the US, drastically expanding their production
and cozying up to Uncle Sam.
By 1917 Nestle's capacity had doubled to 40 factories, and by 1921 it had doubled again
to 80.
World War 1 had taught Nestle a valuable lesson: don't keep your eggs in one basket.
Throughout the thirties, Nestle opened factories in Asia and Latin America, so that when the
next war came around they'd be ready.
Coincidentally, this decentralization kept Nestle safe from the Great Depression and
allowed them to develop one of their most renowned products: Nescafe.
The idea for Nescafe came from the Brazilian government, which wanted Nestle to find a
use for their immense coffee surplus.
The Brazilians had suggested making coffee cubes, but Nestle eventually decided to make
a soluble powder instead.
Nescafe hit the US shelves in 1938 with minimal advertising, and yet one year later it had
become one of the most popular coffee products in the country.
To Nestle, the outbreak of World War 2 felt like a deja vu.
At first demand grew rapidly, but the sheer scale of the global destruction left Nestle
with huge supply shortages.
Nestle's saving grace came in 1941, when the US formally entered the war.
Nescafe became a staple of the armed forces and government contracts propelled Nestle
to record profits.
World War 2 ended up being so profitable for Nestle that they immediately started buying
up the smaller European companies that weren't so lucky.
Their best purchase by far came in 1947, when they acquired Maggi, the manufacturer of various
soups and seasonings.
One year later, Nestle unveil two other brilliant products: Nestea and Nesquik, which quickly
reach Nescafe levels of popularity.
Throughout the next decades Nestle expanded mainly through acquisitions, entering various
new markets, from frozen food to pharmaceuticals.
One of their most successful moves came in 1974, when they acquired a 30% stake in the
French cosmetics firm L'Oreal.
Just three years later, however, Nestle were faced with their first major controversy.
US activists accused Nestle of using predatory marketing tactics to promote their breastfeeding
substitutes in the developing world.
The boycott quickly spread to Europe, and although Nestle eventually complied with the
demands set forth by the World Health Organization, the boycott has been intermittently active
to this day.
Nestle's expansion continued throughout the 1980s, buying up brands like Friskies,
KitKat and After Eight.
During this time they also created Nespresso system.
In 1992 Nestle decided to go all in on mineral water, establishing what eventually became
the world's largest bottled water company.
Since then their brand ownership has grown exponentially, but so too have their controversies.
In 2002 Nestle demanded debt repayment from Ethiopia during one of the harshest famines
in recent memory, eventually backing down after over 8,000 angry email complaints.
In 2005 the CEO of Nestle claimed that people shouldn't have a right to water, a claim
that backfired so profusely that Nestle have a Q&A webpage dedicated to his apologies and
backtracking.
Last but not least is the cocoa industry, which is the bedrock of Nestle's chocolate
products and is also, coincidentally, one of the global centers of child labor, slavery
and human trafficking.
Despite the numerous lawsuits and calls for boycott, however, Nestle has become bigger
than ever, owning over 2,000 different brands across the world.
Since people are unlikely to give up on Nestle's delicious goodies any time soon, it's safe
to say that Nestle will continue expanding in the future.

7.06 The Art of Dota 2 - General Tips and Tricks! - ROG GAMING School [Part 11] - Duration: 8:01.
Hey guys, Ben here!
Welcome to the tutorial where we plan to go over the general tips for all Heroes, as well
as some specific tricks.
We have already covered the art of pulling, juking and escaping in our previous tutorials.
Some of the information will be well known to the players who already have tons of hours
in Dota 2, but I feel I should still cover some of them for the newer players.
Once you die, your Hero loses the gold equal to the following formula.
This means that the lower your net worth, the less gold you lose, or in other words,
give to the enemy team.
This feature was implemented to protect the poor supports who often end up on the lower
end of the net worth list.
But on the other hand, it gives you a way to comeback by killing an enemy Hero who has
a huge net worth.
A few years ago, gold you lose was simply done over the next formula.
It's obvious that the current formula is, arguably, better.
If you are under the smoke effect, you are allowed to cast spells without revealing yourself.
However, Hero attacks will dispel the smoke effect, even if we are talking about the orb
effects applied to the regular attacks, such as Huskar's flaming spears or Clinkz flaming
arrows.
You can also use items without dispelling the smoke.
Enemy Heroes and towers will break thesmoke effect, but the illusions won't.
This makes it easy to know if the Hero who accidentally stumbles upon you during your
gank is a real deal.
Another cool trick regarding the smoke is related to the Dust of Appearance.
Invisible enemy Heroes also dispel the Smoke, but the dispel radius is almost the same as
the radius of your Dust.
As soon as your Smoke pops out, feel free to use the Dust of Appearance if you think
there might be an invisible enemy around you.
Illusion Heroes, if you play against them, can be really irritating.
There are some Heroes with rather powerful illusions, such as Morphling or Spectre.
If these Heroes get farmed, their illusions can get quite tanky and hard to deal with
if you are a poor support.
However, there are some Heroes, or rather abilities they possess, which can instantly
kill these illusions.
Lion has two abilities, Mana Drain and Hex, which can instantly kill a 4K HP Morphlings
illusion, rendering its ultimate almost useless.
Disruptor has Glimpse, Pugna has Life Drain, Shadow Shaman has Hex, Medusa has Stone Gaze,
but every Hero has the access to Scythe of Vyse.
All of these abilities and items instantly deal with the pesky illusions.
It's also quite important to mention several skills that can give you the ability to deny
your allied Hero.
You will often find yourself playing against Queen of Pain, Venomancer, Doom and similar
Heroes with Damage Over Time spells.
If you ever find the allied Hero escaping with almost no HP while under the effect of
these spells, feel free to deny him and prevent him from giving the gold and experience to
the enemy team.
However, to be able to attack the Heroes affected by the mentioned abilities, it has to be below
25% HP.
It could also be a good idea to remember that you can deny yourself with some of your own
abilities or even by the abilities from the Heroes in your team.
Let's say that you play with Centaur or Tiny in your team.
You need to deny yourself.
The Craggy Exterior and Return can actually trigger even if the ally is hitting them!
Pushing these days is quite important, so let's go over the abilities which affect the
towers by either damaging them or reducing their armor or attack speed.
Let's first go over the items affecting the towers, or in general, all buildings.
Assault Cuirass will give the negative armor area of effect on nearby buildings.
Blight Stone and Desolator will give negative armor to a single building.
Crimson Guard also affects the buildings!
We won't go over all abilities as there are tons of them, but we will mention the most
popular.
Techies Mines deal ton of damage to towers.
Death Prophet's Exorcism also does a lot of damage if the tower is her main focus.
Jakiro's Liquid Fire can decrease the attack speed of the tower.
Naga Siren's Song will completely shut down the nearby towers, but will also make them
invulnerable.
To buff up your own towers against the push, use Lich to increase the Armor of the tower,
or Ogre's Bloodlust to increase the Attack Speed.

The Black Knight I'm about to talk about
is not at all related to this guy
with all his money, cool gadgets and the ability to hide in dark alleys.
The Black Knight we're going to be talking about in this video
is even more mysterious.
In fact, many people think it's an alien satellite
that has been kept secret by Nasa and the government
for almost 80 years since it was first discovered.
Over the decades,
there have been many sightings of the strange object
but no one knows why it's up there floating in space.
Our reports from US, Russia and Europe in general
say the satellite is of unknown origin.
So what is this curious object anyway?
when was it discovered, what does it do?
Well, let's start from the very beginning.
Although there are varied opinions,
it is generally believed that
Nikola Tesla was the one who discovered the Black Knights
where he set up a magnifying transmitter
at his Colorado Springs facility in 1899
to investigate wireless distribution of electricity.
What he didn't expect were strange signals
that were repeated periodically with number in order,
they were timed pulses
coming as: one, two, three
that led him to believe that the signal was indeed
coming from an extraterrestrial source.
Tesla originally thought the signals were being sent from Mars.
But he later restated that the signal was actually coming from another part of space.
It's not surprising that Tesla associated the signal with alien intervention
because a lot of people believe that Tesla has had contact with aliens.
It is believed that he received information from aliens in
a number of different cases.
For example,
once he was trying to find an equation
where principle for the AC machine
and suddenly out of nowhere he got the answer via telepathy
or from an unknown source.
Apparently he also invented many things for the government
that were kept from the public.
But that's another story on his own.
Not long after Tesla's discovery,
Guglielmo Marconi, an Italian inventor and electrical engineer
was also intercepted by a strange unknown artificial signal.
He found that some of his Morse code messages
were being returned to him
which fascinated and frightened him at the same time.
Following his discovery in 1927,
another man named Jorgen Hals, civil engineer in Oslo, Norway
was using a radio receiver to listen to shortwave transmissions
and notice something very peculiar was happening.
His signals were being reflected back to him.
he didn't know what it was
but the echoes were being reflected back to him a strange intervals
ranging from 3 to 15 seconds.
These regularly reflected intervals were later known to be LDEs
or Long Delayed Echoes
After the occurrence of all these events
that might have been related to alien interaction
especially the LDEs,
the press was majorly stirred up
From 1928 to 1930,
experiments were performed that tested
the legitimacy of the reflective signals.
And it turned out that they were very real indeed.
The only problem with that,
no one had an explanation for the signals reflections.
As a result,
even more experiments were run in France, in the UK in the 1930s.
But at the end of the day,
scientists could do nothing but be confused and speechless.
Even today we don't have an agreed-upon explanation for the occurrence
and the location of these LEDs.
Of course, after the experiments were run
the Black Knight became an even hotter topic for many news outlets
And the first story of the alien shadow appeared on May 14 in 1954,
when the St. Louis Dispatch and the San Francisco Examiner wrote about it
explaining that the US had found a strange satellite in space
and that it could possibly be a surveillance satellites
launched by the Russians
Then on August 23 in 1954,
another story was released about the Black Knight.
This time, by the Tech Magazine Aviation Week and Space Technology,
they basically told the world
that the Pentagon found two satellites orbiting the Earth.
Both of which were natural.
The Pentagon was of course furious
when they heard about the release of the story
because they did not want the satellites to be known to the public.
As a result, they lied to the people
and told them that the satellites were merely asteroids.
But by then, the public already knew that something was up
and that either the Russians had managed to put something into orbit
where there was something more supernatural at work.
A few years later, in March of 1960,
another satellite was found orbiting earth.
The satellite was a spectacular discovery
because it wasn't like the previously discovered satellites at all.
It was a large black object
weighing around 15 tonne
that was in polar orbits around earth
which means that it passes over polar regions
and has a plane that contains the polar axis. (plane = mặt)
This is really amazing
because first of all the US and the Soviets
didn't even know how to put an object into polar orbit.
Secondly, neither country was capable of putting an object
that weighed that much into space
Third of all,
the satellite was twice as fast as any known satellite at the time
As a result,
the strange polar-orbiting satellites acquired a name "The Black Knight".
No one knows for sure the origins of the name
but it's believed that the name is based on a rocket the British had developed
which was also called Black Knight.
After the amazing discovery,
astronomers across the country conducted research on the satellite
and realized that it had one of the strangest patterns
of appearance and disappearance.
Because it would disappear for long periods of time before reappearing again years later.
According to Robert I. Johnson, director of the Adler Planetarium
"The object doesn't even have the decency
to maintain a regular schedule
like any other heavenly or man-made object...
we don't known when to watch for it."
After this discovery, the biggest question of course was
what is the thing and what does it do?
And Stanford space scientist Ronald Bracewell
had a possible explanation.
he believed that the satellite was a way
for a distant alien civilization to communicate with earth.
He said the aliens might have sent out a probe
or "Bracewell probe" as we now call it
into the universe to look for other planets
that seemed a promising and contain intelligent life-forms.
He said that the satellites would remain dormant
until humans found a way to send signals to it
in which it would send signals back.
Now here's where it gets really interesting.
Duncan Lunan, a Scottish science writer
was so intrigued by Bracewell theory
that he decided to test it out for himself.
He re-examines the data from the LDEs experiments of 1928
and was absolutely and completely baffled.
What happened was
he mapped out the delays from the echoes he recorded in 1928
and found that they formed the pattern of the Boötis constellation -
a constellation in the northern sky.
Not only that,
Lunan was also able to decode the message
that was being conveyed from the LDE data
at a stable point between the orbit of earth and the moon
called L5.
The message read:
"Start here. Our home is Epsilon Boötis.
Which is a double star.
We live on the 6th planet of 7 - check that, 6th of seven.
Counting outwards from the Sun,
which is the largest of the two.
Our 6th planet has one moon, our 4th planet has three.
Our first and third planets each have one.
Our probes in the orbit of your moon.
This update the position of Arcturus show on our maps."
If that's legit, that's some spine-tingling stuff
And that's not all.
What's even more amazing is that
along with the decoded message,
Lunan also realized something else.
Although he made his discovery in 1972,
he realized that the star system he saw from the LDE data
was not like the star system he saw in the skies at all.
He concluded that
if The Black Knight really was an alien probe,
it must have taken ages to reach Earth.
So by looking back in time, Lunan realized
that the map he created matched
how Epsilon Boötis looked like the Epsilon Boötis
that was in the sky 13,000 years ago.
This means that the satellites possibly sent from a distance alien civilization
could have been orbiting the planet since prehistory.
By then, Lunan was pretty much convinced
that the alien civilization living near the Bootes constellation
was trying to contact earth.
It's possible that the same signal
was also intercepted by Tesla and Marconi as well
but we will never know for sure.
Sadly, since there wasn't solid proof
regarding the existence of such a super natural satellites,
people started to believe the Pentagon
and that The Black Knight was just some space debris.
But these all changed when visual evidence of the satellites
was found in 1998.
When the crew of the space shuttle Endeavour
was able to take high-resolution pictures
of the strange black object
while they were in space.
The old stories of Tesla, LDEs and Lunan constellation map
once again resurfaced
in the minds of people across the country.
Even to this day,
we are still not sure what The Black Knight is
what it does and where it comes from.
But to most people,
one thing is for sure,
it's no regular satellite.
Guys, this was such an interesting topic to talk about.
What if this thing isn't alien at all
And I just have a thought about this.
and I talked about this a lot on this channel
but there has been so many clues
about ancient advanced civilization existing before us.
So what if there was a satellite put into space by...us
or our ancestors who are extremely advanced.
Also and I'm just throwing crazy ideas out here.
What if the message from the constellation Bootes
that's actually sent by us?
what if we left Earth already and relocate it over there
but we left this thing behind until,
I don't know, the new group of us were able to communicate with it.
So perhaps humans have already left Earth and are now living among the stars.
