Here's a challenge.

You need to send a number to someone across the room, but you can't talk, and you can't

write it down.

How would you do it?

In this project you'll use Google Science Journal, an app on your phone that allows

you to record light [pause], sound [pause], and vibration [pause].

This will allow you to send a message across the room without talking or writing.

But which method will work the best?

It's up to you to find out.

To view written instructions for this lesson plan, along with thousands of other science

and engineering project ideas, visit us online at www.sciencebuddies.org.

-------------------------------------------

How to Measure Light with Google's Science Journal App - Duration: 1:38.

You can use Google Science Journal to measure light levels using your phone's built-in light

sensor.

Enter observe mode by selecting the menu icon in the upper left, select observe, and then

select the light bulb icon.

You can now measure light levels in lux, the SI unit of light intensity.

Meter mode displays the instantaneous reading.

You can switch to graph mode to see how the reading changes over time.

In order to take accurate measurements, it is important to find the exact location of

the light sensor on your phone.

You can do this by putting the phone under a bright light, switching to graph mode, and

slowly waving your finger around in front of the phone.

When your finger blocks the light sensor, the value on the graph will drop.

Conversely, you can try shining a flashlight at the phone, and the reading will go up when

you aim it directly at the light sensor.

Try using the light sensor to do some simple experiments, like measuring light levels at

different times of day, or how the brightness of a light bulb changes as you get farther

away.

How to Measure Sound with Google's Science Journal App - Duration: 1:14.

You can use Google Science Journal to measure sound intensity using your phone's built-in

microphone.

Enter observe mode by selecting the menu icon in the upper left, select observe, and then

select the speaker icon.

You can now measure sound intensity in decibels.

Meter mode displays the instantaneous reading.

You can switch to graph mode to see how the reading changes over time.

In order to take accurate measurements, make sure the microphone is not blocked or covered.

Try using the microphone to do some simple experiments.

Measure ambient noise levels at the places you live, play, or work.

Or, measure how sound intensity changes with distance from the noise source.

-------------------------------------------

How to Measure Acceleration with Google's Science Journal App - Duration: 1:59.

You can use Google Science Journal to measure acceleration using your phone's built-in accelerometer.

Enter observe mode by selecting the menu icon in the upper left, and select observe.

You can select the X, Y, or Z icons to measure acceleration from side to side, front to back,

or up and down with respect to the phone.

Meter mode displays the instantaneous acceleration in meters per second squared.

You can switch to graph mode to see how the reading changes over time.

Try using the accelerometer to do some simple experiments.

Watch the graph as you wave the phone around with your hand, or put the phone in your pocket

as you walk.

You can also use the accelerometer to detect vibrations.

You might wonder why the screen sometimes says nine point eight even when the phone

is not moving.

The simplified explanation is that the accelerometer also detects gravity, which always points

down.

Depending on your phone's orientation, part of the gravity vector will line up with the

X, Y, or Z directions of the phone, resulting in a nonzero reading even if the phone is

holding still.

This ability allows you, for example, to steer in a racing game just by tilting your phone.

available, see the rest of the videos in this playlist.

-------------------------------------------

How to Record Data with Google's Science Journal App - Duration: 1:36.

To record data in Google Science Journal, open any sensor in meter or graph mode.

Set up the phone for your experiment, and press the record button at the bottom of the

screen to start recording.

Perform your experiment, then press the record button again to stop recording.

You may need to crop your data, for example, if there is noise at the beginning and end

from when you were handling the phone.

To do this, select the three dots in the upper right, select crop, drag the two sliders to

select the region of data you want to keep, and then press the check mark.

You can also add notes to your data using the note icon, and rename the trial using

the pencil icon.

Finally, you can export the data by selecting the three dots in the upper right and selecting

export.

You can then send a comma separated variable, or CSV, file, to your computer using email

or Google Drive.

If some of these options do not appear for you, try uninstalling and reinstalling the

app, and make sure you enter your birthday.

The export option is not available to users under thirteen.

To learn more about the different sensors available in the app, view the other videos

in this playlist.

Earthquake-Resistant Building Lesson Plan with Google's Science Journal app - Duration: 2:37.

In this project your students will design earthquake resistant buildings using Google's

Science Journal, an app on your phone that can measure acceleration.

Watch what happens if I attach the phone to this model building that is attached directly

to the ground, or this piece of cardboard, and then shake the cardboard to simulate an

earthquake.

You can see that we get minimum and maximum accelerations of roughly five meters per second

squared.

Now, watch what happens if I put the house on these markers that act like rollers and

allow it to slide relative to the ground.

You can see that we have much lower minimum and maximum accelerations of less than one

meter per second squared.

This happens because the markers function similarly to a base isolation system in a

real building that isolates the movement of the building from the movement of the ground,

allowing the ground to slide back and forth under the building during an earthquake.

However, this simple design is not perfect, for example there is nothing stopping the

building from drifting off to one side and falling off the markers.

In this project it will be up to your students to improve the design using common classroom

materials.

For example you can add rubber bands to keep the house centered, but be careful, if the

rubber bands are pulled too tightly, they can actually make the oscillations worse.

You could add padded stoppers to both sides of the building that prevent it from rolling

off the tracks.

But again be careful, if these stoppers are too close to the building or too hard, they

could cause the spikes in the acceleration to increase.

You can even get rid of the rollers entirely and try suspending the house using straws

and string.

Your students can use a combination of these methods, or completely different ideas that

they come up with on their own, to try and reduce the peak accelerations felt by the

building during a shake test.

Reacion Rates: Speed It Up with Temperature - Duration: 0:51.

Chemical reactions can happen really fast.

Or they can go on for days, months, or even longer.

Explore chemical reaction rates with the help of the bleaching reaction – a reaction that

you may be familiar with from removing stains from your clothes.

The main things you need are bleach and food color.

Then monitor how the color of your dye, the reactant, disappears from your solution over

time.

Do you think you can change the chemical reaction rates?

What about using different temperatures?

Which temperature will make your food color disappear the fastest.

Find out yourself in this color-changing experiment!

THEY'RE OVER THERE, AND WE DON'T LIKE THEM MUCH.

NAZ, THANK YOU, SUSAN PAGE AND MICHAEL SCHMIDT.

COMEY FACED A BARRAGE OF CRITICISM FROM DEMOCRATS TODAY.

AFTER COMEY TESTIFIED HE FACED TO BAD CHOICES, ADAM SCHIFF

TWEETED, THE REAL CHOICE WAS NOT CONCEAL OR SPEAK.

COMEY SPOKE ABOUT CLINTON AND CONCEALED TRUMP INVESTIGATION.

THE REAL CHOICE WAS TO ABIDE BY DOJ POLICY OR VIOLATE IT.

HERE'S OU DEMOCRATS ON THE COMMITTEE REACTED TODAY.

>> THIS EXPLOSIVE ANNOUNCEMENT -- AND IT WAS --

CAME UNPROMPTED AND WITHOUT KNOWING WHETHER A SINGLE E-MAIL

WARRANTED A NEW INVESTIGATION. IT WAS, IN FACT, A BIG OCTOBER

SURPRISE. >> ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS YOU

TOLD US TO COMMENT EXTENSIVELY ON THE INVESTIGATION.

YOU EVEN RELEASED INTERNAL FBI MEMOS.

I MAY HAVE MISSED THIS, BUT IN MY 42 YEARS HERE, I'VE NEVER

SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THAT. >> I'M STRUCK THAT YOU CHOSE TO

MAKE PUBLIC STATEMENTS ABOUT ONE INVESTIGATION AND NOT ANOTHER.

>> I FIND THAT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT YOU DID NOT CONTEMPLATE

THAT THERE WOULD BE POLITICAL RAMIFICATIONS TO YOUR COMMENTS.

>> DO YOU HAVE ANY REGRETS, OR ARE THERE ANY THINGS YOU WOULD

DO DIFFERENTLY? >> THE HONEST ANSWER IS NO.

I'VE ASKED MYSELF THAT A MILLION TIMES BECAUSE LORDY HAS THIS

BEEN PAINFUL. THE ONLY THING I REGRET IS MAYBE

ANSWERING THE PHONE WHEN THEY CALLED TO RECRUIT ME TO BE FBI

DIRECTOR. >> I'M JOINED BY SENATOR

BLUMENTHAL OF CONNECTICUT. LORDY.

I'VE NEVER HEARD A POLITICIAN SAY LORDY WHEN THEY'RE TALKING

ABOUT EVIDENCE. ANYWAY, WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THIS

TESTIMONY? DO YOU THINK COMEY COST HILLARY

CLINTON THE ELECTION? >> I THINK WITHOUT QUESTION, IT

HAD A PART IN THE OUTCOME OF THE ELECTION.

SO DID THE RUSSIAN MEDDLING AND INTERFERENCE.

NOW THE QUESTION IS DID THE TRUMP TEAM COLLUDE WITH THE

RUSSIANS, AND WILL THEY BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE CRIMINALLY?

THE REAL TAKEAWAY FOR ME FROM TODAY'S HEARING IS JIM COMEY

SHOULD NOT BE MAKING A DECISION ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT TO

PROSECUTE TRUMP OR HIS ASSOCIATES.

AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES IS A POTENTIAL TARGET

HERE. SO THERE IS A NEED FOR A SPECIAL

PROSECUTOR BECAUSE OTHERWISE, EITHER JIM COMEY OR A TRUMP

APPOINTEE WILL BE MAKING THAT DECISION, AND WE KNOW IT WILL BE

TAINTED AND IN QUESTION. >> WHICH WAY WOULD IT TAINT?

I MEAN IF IT'S COMEY RIGHT NOW AND HE HAS TO PROSECUTE OR NOT

PROSECUTE PERHAPS TRUMP INVOLVEMENT IN -- OR IN CAHOOTS

WITH THE RUSSIANS IN THE CAMPAIGN, WHERE WOULD HE BE

TILTED, DO YOU BELIEVE, IN PUBLIC PERCEPTION?

>> THERE WILL BE TAINT AND DOUBT EITHER WAY.

IN FACT, THERE IS A NEED FOR AN INDEPENDENT SPECIAL PROSECUTOR

IF THERE IS, IN FACT, A CRIMINAL CHARGE AGAINST TRUMP ASSOCIATES,

AGAINST PAGE, MANAFORT, STONE, OR FLYNN OR THE PRESIDENT OF THE

UNITED STATES. AND THERE'S A NEED IF THERE'S A

NON-PROSECUTION BECAUSE OTHERWISE, THE PUBLIC WILL

RIGHTLY DOUBT WHETHER IT IS AN INDEPENDENT AND IMPARTIAL

DECISION JUST AS NOW THERE IS DOUBT ABOUT WHETHER COMEY

REACHED THE RIGHT DECISION INDEPENDENTLY.

>> WELL, DEMOCRATS BELIEVE THAT COMEY HELPED TRUMP.

SO YOU'RE SAYING THAT THEY WOULD BE LIKELY TO BELIEVE THAT HE

WOULD HELP TRUMP IN THIS INVESTIGATION AS WELL?

>> THE OVERWHELMING TRUTH HERE IS, CHRIS, THERE'S GREAT AND

SUBSTANTIAL WELL ESTABLISHED PRECEDENT FOR AN INDEPENDENT

SPECIAL PROSECUTOR, AND THE DOUBTS WILL JUST BE MULTIPLIED

IF JIM COMEY HAS A PART IN THIS DECISION.

HE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT HE WOULD NOT AND SHOULD NOT BE THE ONE TO

MAKE THE DECISION. NOW IT IS A QUESTION OF WHETHER

THE PRESIDENT'S APPOINTEE, THE DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL, DOES

SO. AND IN MY VIEW, THE DECISION

WILL BE EQUALLY TAINTED AND DOUBTFUL IF A TRUMP APPOINTEE

RESPONSIBLE TO THE PRESIDENT, WHOM THE FBI IS NOW
