Youtube daily May 9 2017

- Mobilize has been really amazing,

and mainly its given us the opportunity

to talk to our community in ways that we weren't able

to with the Google group.

- We are often on location on site

trying to make sales happen.

So really having a Mobilize app

at our fingertips really helps us keep these

events successful.

- Being a maker's really overwhelming

and so using Mobilize to connect with a group like Etsy

just makes you feel connected.

- They have grown their community from 1400 members

to 2800 members.

And I just see them continuing to scale that community.

Continuing to organize and collaborate together.

My Nvidia Shield TV Setup with Accessories Re-upload with Video of Setup - Duration: 14:01.

welcome to my Nvidia shield TV and today

we're going to take a look at my setup

for the shield TV I've disconnected

everything so I can show you guys

so there's the shield and as you can see

right there is the external hard drive

that I used as internal then it goes to

the USB here you can see the connection

the only one that's not here is the HDMI

but the first one right here is your

external internal then you have the USB

hub right here as you can see it's

hooked up to this hard drive you can

also hook up this little thingy which is

this you can see this is the mouse I use

as a little Dumbo

you can plug it in here is the

headphones that I used to record as you

can see and then there's the mic USB the

hard drive 5 terabyte hard drive the

only thing that's missing here is the

webcam but that's the setup a very quick

look at how I have my shield TV set up

there we go I have a 256 gigabyte SSD

external USB 3.0 hard drive SSD solid

state drive as my internal so it

replaces that 16 gigabyte hard drive

with 250 gigabytes and it's extremely

fast it's faster than the probe trust me

I've done the numbers the next thing I

have is a USB hub and that brings it all

together that basically connects all

this stuff down here you see

just by this one little device here and

then I have a five terabyte external

hard drive hooked up to the first slot

here so let's just go to settings and

check that out I actually have a one

terabyte hard drive right now because

I'm doing a reset so I saved I backed up

everything onto this one terabyte hard

drive it was only a hundred gigabytes

but I backed it up here's my internal as

you can see the 16 gigabyte gives you

actually 11 gigabyte hard drive internal

and now this is my internal when you

adapt it becomes your adapter storage

and that becomes your internal storage a

formats it and sets it all up so I have

that hooked up the next thing I have

actually what's moving the mouse right

now is this right here with this little

dongle set up right in here and it works

just like a regular Mouse sometimes I

put in a wired mouse the wired one works

a little bit different with the wired

mouse the keyboard down here opens up

much quicker than with this one the one

I have right here on hand which I'm

going to test is this one right here is

the MINIX I also have one of these which

the kids kind of messed up and this is

the same thing as the MINIX one but each

one has the little dongle and they work

only if you plug it into the USB hub the

next thing I'm using to record is this

right here a headphone with mic it has

to have a 3.5 millimeter jack and it

hooks up straight to the gamepad

as you can see right here we'll take a

look look a closer look at it later you

also have one of these with a USB and

see this one right here is another one I

have two USB you can use it for Skype or

twitch you know all the live stuff

hangouts it will work and it records and

it's very clear so the next the last

thing I have is a USB cam I don't use it

very much it's hooked up to the TV but

the kids sure do enjoy it and they

record straight to the external hard

drive so now let's go take a look at all

the products here take a closer look

as you can see you can get a one

terabyte external but there's no point

you really don't need that much internal

storage 16 is too small but 250 is the

perfect it's very hard to fill up to 50

if you're storing all your emulators at

net and games on the external as long as

it's 3.0 and it's a desktop that's

plugged in it will work fine

I play 4k movies some of those 4k movies

are a hundred gigabytes and it plays

perfectly through the USB hub so you can

see their different sizes this is the

one I have right here I got it for a

little cheaper was around 50 bucks and

it works great it's faster than the 500

gigabyte Pro so for anybody who's

getting a pro I suggest you get the 16

and spend the money on a solid-state

drive because there's nothing faster

than a solid solid state drive so now

let's take a look at the USB hubs as you

can see this is the one I own right now

that's plugged in right at this moment

right now the other one I have is this

one right here and I don't use it

anymore for some reason I don't know if

it's something went wrong with it but I

always thought that if it was plugged in

it would be better maybe it was

defective if any of you guys having a

plugged in one let me know might get

another one but this is the one I have

it's unbelievably fast quick small

so that's going to bring together all

your stuff so let's move on the external

hard drives

you don't need oh my goodness 8 terabyte

hard drive Jesus I thought 5 terabytes

was huge so let's scroll down I just

want to show you one thing here now I

have one of these right here it's

plugged in right now the 1 terabyte and

let me tell you it's much slower because

it's a portable then the then the

desktop one much much slower who is

directly plugged in to the shield not

going through the hub it would still be

slower than the desktop one so just

letting you guys know that now the next

one is obviously the air mouse you can

get a combo keyboard with mouse which is

what I'm using right now and this right

here is air mouse let's plugged in I'm

going to plug it in right now

I'm going to show you what the

difference is as you can see when I

select up here you can see the keyboard

pops up and I can do type in whatever

with the mouse now I'm going to put in

my MINIX won't air mouse and you're

going to see the difference so I'm

plugging it in now there we go it's

plugged in

this opens up for some reason so let's

go back I'm actually using the MINIX

Mouse here so here you see I'm moving it

around like a regular Mouse my wrists

everything works perfectly on here go up

moves up now the differences is when

you're typing now as you can see when I

select up here you see the bottom you

won't get a keyboard popping up anymore

when you're using one of these uh air

Mouse because it has a keyboard on the

back of it as you can see it's pretty

cool so let's go back and let's write

something in here

let's go home let's go into Firefox

I'm just going to type up here you see

at the bottom so I'm going to type on

the back YouTube I spelled it wrong but

you see at the bottom fix it up just

like that

and most of the buttons work I can go

home

pushing the home button the volume works

most of the buttons work as you can see

I'm moving everything around here and

I'm doing that with the bear Mouse so

that's the air Mouse let me unplug it so

I can go back to the some reason and

acts funny when there's two two of them

plugged in

so this is the one I'm using right now

when this is very good one of these

these are the ones I'm using with the

dongle works very well so let's go to

the microphone and headphone here now I

have one that's very similar to this the

reason I'm showing you this is down here

I want to show you this picture here

because these are the ones you have to

get if you're going to use with the

gamepad you see it has a 3.5 millimeter

jack here for your headphones let's hope

this thing as you can see goes straight

into your gamepad and then it comes with

this little one to go into your computer

but without that it will not work the

other one I have is something like this

and that's what I'm recording with right

now so let's go to the next one which is

what I use right here for Skype for I

use it for the hangouts and it works

very well

I have something that kind of looks like

that just a little more expensive or you

can get a Bluetooth one you also can get

with the headphones with the USB and you

plug it into your USB hub and it works

and the last one is your webcam and your

webcam comes all different this one has

this is the one I have right here

recording 1080p

one day I'm going to use this sucker who

knows totally the accessories I have

that's how I have my shield set up

guys if you like enjoyed this video

please give it a thumbs up if you guys

have any questions please leave them in

the comments and I'll get back to you as

soon as I can I hope you enjoy this

thank you so much for watching and take

care

you

- Well hello there.

Nice to see you, how have you been?

When you're a partner manager

and you want to mobilize developers or brand ambassadors,

soccer moms, or any other group,

you have to make people feel

like you're talking directly to them.

The problem is that today

you're using about 15 different tools to do so,

and you're wasting a huge amount of time,

energy, and data.

That's where Mobilize comes in.

A single hub to organize

and communicate authentically at scale with your groups.

You can manage thousands of people right from your phone,

using the Mobilize app.

It's just amazing really.

With Mobilize, your member data management,

communications and networking,

are all in one place.

First, you import up to thousands of your members,

and organize them into groups.

No member login is required.

In each group, you can see your communications.

You can send email or a text in just a few clicks,

and you can use very precise filters to send a message only

to the right people.

You can also send an event

that will automatically appear in your partners' calendars.

Send quick polls

that they can directly answer through email,

and get smart follow-ups.

Nice job, well done.

Keep up the good work!

The great thing about Mobilize is that you can sync member

data from multiple sources.

I can create an onboarding page

so that anyone can register to join my group.

Companies that have switched to Mobilize

report double the engagement,

compared with other management and communication tools.

One Bad Reddit Post Brought $198 in Adwords Traffic - Duration: 9:42.

So, last week I posted my vlog to Reddit.

It only got up to 23 upvotes, but that generated over 2,000 views and 170

subscriptions.

Then, over the next two days, I tried to duplicate that Reddit traffic using YouTube pre-roll

ads to find out the monetary value of that Reddit

post, As well as what views and subscribers cost,

right now, during Adpocalypse, using YouTube pre-roll ads.

Now, I know that numbers aren't for everyone, and this episode is going to be particularly

number heavy, so I wanted to add, next week,

I had an idea, I came up with a website, it was eChemistry.com.

I had 169,000 users.

I haven't talked about it since I shut it down,

but in next week's episode I'll discuss my experience turning an idea into a website.

Make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss it.

Now back to the current thing.

First, I'm going to show you the raw numbers and then we're going to go through them again

slowly to really pull out the meaning.

So, I took my vlog and paid to play it before any other video on YouTube, as an ad, to see

what it cost to get views and subscriptions.

Untargeted, the ad ran 1,137 times for $26.79.

That happened all within ten minutes.

It played all over YouTube on 1,050 different channels and brought in 30 subscriptions.

Targeted ads were viewed 780 times for $86.47 and brought in 67 subscriptions.

Then, finally, Reddit.

This post was not popular on Reddit.

It peaked at 23 upvotes and stabilized around 8.

The Reddit numbers were awful.

The YouTube numbers they generated were AMAZING.

That post alone brought in 2,335 views, 170 subscriptions and $1.01 in ad revenue.

Now there are a lot of ways to do the math here.

For Reddit I'm going to use peak votes, because I think the number of votes a Reddit post

has at its peak is the most influential in driving traffic.

So now, let's do meaning.

Unrestricted views cost me 2.36 cents per view.

When the ad shows and people skip before 30 seconds, I didn't pay anything.

But, anyone who hit 30 seconds I paid 2.36 cents each.

Now, with unrestricted views, 1 out of 43 people who watched for 30 seconds or more,

ended up subscribing.

That made the price per subscriber using YouTube pre-roll ads, on unrestricted content, during

Adpocalypse, 89.3 cents per subscriber.

I'll link to the video I used in the description below, if you want to see what they saw.

Next, targeted views.

I targeted several channels and even up to a bid of 30 cents per view I could only get

on the channel called "Crash Course."

Because I was targeting, the views cost much more.

I paid 11.1 cents per view on average, which is 4.7 times the cost of an unrestricted view.

But targeting worked in that 1 out of 11.5 people who viewed 30 seconds of the ad ended

up subscribing.

So, that's a conversion rate almost four times higher than the unrestricted views.

But because those eyes cost so much more, it ended up averaging out to $1.29 per new

subscriber using targeted ads.

So this could be different for your type of content, but for me, the niche I'm targeting

is so expensive that it's worth just shotgunning my ad out to unrestricted, untargeted viewers.

But trying targeted ads for similar content was really interesting for market research.

What that means is that advertisers think that users who watch this type of content

are more than ten times more valuable than random YouTube eyes.

To make this all better, Adwords has a coupon that I mentioned last week, which I link in

the description below.

When you spend $25 they'll add $75 to your account.

I was able to get a coupon for a hundred dollars when you spend $25 by calling the 1-800 number

on that page.

Using my actual numbers, unrestricted views which spent just the bare minimum 25, plus

the hundred dollars from the coupon would bring in 140 subscribers.

If you use the $75 coupon, that would bring in 112 subscribers.

Using my targeted numbers and the hundred dollar coupon, that would be 97 subscribers.

And with the $75 coupon it would be 77 subscribers.

This is a great example of why using data is important.

With the same $25 you can either get 140 subscribers or 77.

Now, if you're a huge channel this is a really bad idea.

Even at the cheapest possible option, those users would have to watch an average of 90

more videos just to make back the money it cost to get them in the first place.

But if you're a tiny channel, like me, then this is an amazing deal.

I have 324 subscribers, so I still know everyone's name and would be overwhelmed to get 140 more.

But before we hit conclusions, let's do Reddit.

At the peak this post had 23 net upvotes, with upvotes being the currency of Reddit.

Now here's the really amazing thing, 1 out of 13.7 views that came from Reddit ended

up subscribing.

If you compare that to the two Adwords options, the people who showed up were much more like

targeted viewers than like random viewers.

So each net upvote on that Reddit post brought in 101.5 YouTube views, 7.4 subscriptions

and 4.4 cents in ad revenue.

That is huge.

So, now, if I use my actual, combined numbers, that one unpopular Reddit post was worth $198.71

in Adwords driven subscriptions.

Or it was worth $128.52 in Adwords driven views.

So, if you were equally targeting views and subscriptions using my actual data,

then each net upvote at the peak added $7.11 in Adwords advertising to my post.

And each down vote took away $7.11 in Adwords ads.

Because you have the power to vote either way, your one vote made a $14.22 difference

in how many people came and saw my video.

This might be the one part of life where your one vote makes a huge, meaningful, instant

difference, regardless of what the majority ends up choosing.

So, summary points.

If 140 new subscribers would make a difference to you, from my experience, spending the $25

pre-rolling your ad, especially during Adpocalypse, is really worth it.

This was in last weeks' episode, but if you're going to buy a house, you buy it right after

the crash.

If you're going to buy stocks, buy them right after the crash.

If you're ever going to buy YouTube ads, do it during Adpocalypse.

I was able to get the $100 bonus coupon by calling, I don't know that everyone will be

able to get that.

Leave comments below on what works and what doesn't work, if you do call the number.

Test out targeted views.

They convert better and teach you about the value of your market.

But don't be afraid of untargeted views.

For me, untargeted pre-rolls were so much cheaper that they were the better option.

Next, don't use an adwords expert.

When I called to get that coupon, I got transferred to an "expert" who tried to help.

They're trained in selling products and external websites.

Mine didn't know what a vlog was.

And even after watching the episode and consulting with her manager, she suggested that instead

of running YouTube ads that I use regular Google search and buy the keywords "Free Online

Movie Download."

That's an adorable misunderstanding of what YouTube is and my "expert" was super nice

and really trying to help, but I deleted her entire campaign as soon as we got off the

phone so I could do it right.

Next, Reddit is better than Adwords for the effort you put in to get each viewer and subscriber.

YouTube is better than Reddit for friendly comments.

Reddit's thing is anonymity.

People make up weird usernames, and can say whatever they want with no repercussions.

That makes Reddit a really safe place to be mean and write mean comments.

If you have bile in your soul, Reddit is the place to take it out and spread it all over

the Internet.

So, post your content to Reddit. There are lots of good people there and it brings tons

of high quality traffic.

But then read your comments on YouTube where people use their real photos, their real names,

and people are much more supportive and friendly.

Adwords sells a great product, but dealing with them was one of the worst consumer experiences

of my life.

I was permanently banned, for life, from Adwords, while I was still on the phone with my Adwords

"expert" setting up my account for the first time.

Once you're banned, they send you a letter telling you that they won't tell you why you're

banned.

I ended up figuring out that it was because there's a # sign in my mailing address.

Billing cleared my ban as soon as I removed that pound sign.

But I had to open a second account in order to get the data for this video,

that's how I figured out that the # sign was the problem.

And now Terms & Conditions has permanently banned me for life because I opened that second

account.

Despite being banned, I'm going to try to find a way to repeat this experiment with

each vlog.

Day 1 will be Reddit.

Day 2 will be Adwords ads.

And, over time, hopefully the numbers will get better and better.

Looking at numbers like this, you can really see why entertainers make so much money.

If untargeted eyes are worth 2.36 cents each (per ad!).

And targeted eyes are worth more than 30 cents each (per ad!)

then anyone who can draw a huge audience is really drawing a huge amount of value for

advertisers.

So, to Redditors, thank you for all the traffic and subscriptions.

To YouTubers, I was overwhelmed with how friendly and supportive complete strangers were to

me, just because I posted one video.

Mouse over this floating face icon for the subscribe button so you're here for the eChemistry

story next week.

And the Reddit / Adwords updates, whenever they happen.

This is still the beginning of this channel, so you being here means way extra right now.

So: Thank you.

And I will see you next week.

Video: Cool days head, spot showers possible - Duration: 2:42.

>> A GOOD TUESDAY TO YOU, I'M

METEOROLOGIST CINDY FITZGIBBON.

HERE WE ARE WITH THE NINTH DAY

OF MAY, AND IF YOU THINK IT'S

BEEN RUNNING CHILLY SO FAR, YOU

ARE RIGHT.

THIS RIGHT HERE IS A COMPARISON

OF THE FIRST EIGHT DAYS OF MAY

THIS YEAR WHICH HAVE BEEN A BIT

BELOW AVERAGE VERSUS LAST YEAR,

WHICH IS ACTUALLY EVEN COLDER

THAN IT HAS BEEN SO FAR.

EITHER WAY WE'RE RUNNING COOLER

THAN WE OUGHT TO BE.

TYPICAL HIGH IS 64, AND FOR THE

MOST PART WE'RE HANGING IN THE

50s HERE FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL

DAYS.

IT HAS TO DO WITH THE JET STREAM

WHICH IS NOT ONLY TAKING A DIP

IN THE NORTHEAST BUT THERE IS

THIS CUT-OFF AREA OF LOW

PRESSURE THAT HAS BEEN STUCK

OVER US, AND THAT'S GENERATING

THE BUILDING CLOUDS AND THE SPOT

SHOWERS, AND WE'RE GOING TO HAVE

THAT INTO TOMORROW AS WELL, AND

THEN AS THAT UPPER LEVEL LOW

MOVES OUT WE'RE DRIER HERE TO

END THE WEEK BUT THE REAL WARMTH

STAYS STUCK TO THE SOUTH AND

WEST SO WE'RE NOT LOOKING FOR

ANY BIG WARMUPS AROUND HERE ANY

TIME SOON.

THIS AFTERNOON, A BIT OF A SEA

KICKING IN, SO ALONG THE

COASTLINE LOW 50s THE BEST WE

DO, AND OVER THE INTERIOR, A FEW

SPOTS MAY SNEAK UP FROM THE

MERRIMACK VALLEY.

AS YOU ADD THE ELEVATION, COOLER

OUT TO THE WORST HILLS.

IT IS A COOL AFTERNOON, AND NOT

DRY FOR EVERYONE.

YOU CAN SEE A LOT OF BREAKS IN

THE CLOUDS NRTH AND WEST OF THE

CITY THIS MORNING.

A COUPLE.

LITTLE SPRINKLES AND VERY LIGHT

SHOWERS MOVING INTO SOUTHEASTERN

MASSACHUSETTS EARLY IN THE DAY,

AND WE GET INTO THE AFTERNOON

THE CLOUDS MAY GENERATE POP-UP

SHOWERS, AND THIS IS 3:00,

NOTICE THEY ARE SCATTERED AND

THEY ARE GOING TO BE WITH US

RIGHT UP UNTIL SUNSET, SO

BETWEEN 2:00 AND 8:00, HIT OR

MISS SHOWERS AROUND, AND NOT

EVERYONE SEES THEM BUT WHERE YOU

GET THEM THEY WILL BE BRIEF AND

PASSING SO CERTAINLY DON'T

CANCEL ANY PLANS, WE GO PAST

SUNSET, AND SKIES DO BECOME

PARTLY CLOUDY.

AND THAT WILL ALLOW THE

TEMPERATURES TO DROP ONCE AGAIN

SO LOTS OF 30s TOMORROW

MORNING IN THE SUBURBS.

I DON'T THINK WE'RE DEALING WITH

FROST IN MOST AREAS.

A LITTLE BIT MILDER TOMORROW, A

SLIGHT BUMP UP IN THE

TEMPERATURES, WITH ENOUGH

SUNSHINE WE COULD SNEAK INTO THE

LOWER 60s BUT IT'S A BLEND OF

CLOUDS AND SUNSHINE HERE THROUGH

THE END OF THE WEEK, A BIT MORE

CLOUD COVER ON THURSDAY.

BUT DRY INTO FRIDAY, AND

SATURDAY EVENING AND INTO

SUNDAY, THAT'S OUR NEXT

WIDESPREAD RAINFALL COMING ON

IN, AND THE COMPUTER MODELS ARE

DEVELOPING A COASTAL STORM TO

THE SOUTH HERE ON SUNDAY.

AND IF IT COMES CLOSE ENOUGH WE

COULD BE TALKING ABOUT A

WIND-SWEPT SOAKING RAIN WITH

STRONGER WINDS ALONG THE

COASTLINE.

EITHER WAY IT IS LOOKING DAMP

AND COOL FOR MOTHER'S DAY.

WE'LL KEEP YOU POSTED ON THE

TRACK OF THAT STORM WITH WET

WEATHER TO END THE WEEKEND.

Welcome to the Amigo Gringo Talk Show - the only show in Portuguese without Brazilians.

We only interview gringos, and today it's a very special gringo. Well, I think he's very special.

I don't know who it is, it's a surprise guest. Eric told me it's a really famous Hollywood person.

I don't know who it is. Let's meet our SURPRISE GUEST!

What is this Eric? YOU are the surprise guest?

Of course.

Well, I guess it is indeed a surprise. But you are a gringo who speaks Portuguese and lives in Los Angeles

so let's make the most of it and find out how life is in Los Angeles.

What is the biggest difference between New York and Los Angeles.

I'm still new there, but what I have noticed is that the people there are very happy.

And I'm not sure why. I think it's in part because of the sun.

I think it's because they don't work very much.

No, they do work, just not as much as New Yorkers.

Everyone I know that comes from California seems artificially happy.

But maybe it's real.

I don't know if its artificial or real but yes, they are happier.

For example, when I was in New York, all my friends and I had a love-hate relationship

Especially because of money, I think. Life here in New York is very expensive. It's expensive there, too

but not as much as in New York. Even my friends with a good job never have any money here.

It's so expensive! These New York apartments! You'll be $1500 here for a piece of crap.

You sit in this piece of crap and that is called a "house" or an "apartment"

but it's really like living inside a bathroom .

I know one big difference is climate.

I was very happy to be in Los Angeles during the winter.

Because New York winter is...New York is my favorite city in the world, but I hate...Chris.

I hate the winter.

I also wasn't here, II escaped in February, the worst month.

But I have a theory. Do you think the weather itself is what makes people happier?

Let's conduct a test. Vanessa lives in Miami. Are people in Miami happier?

I don't doubt it at all.

In Los Angeles, the nightlife is really good. There are fantastic bars, but everything closes at 2am

as if it were a military exercise. Everyone is at home by 2, as if there were a law.

In the United States we often put the people from the East and West coast in one group and the middle in another.

Do people who live here and in California have anything in common?

In Los Angeles, people think they are very different from New Yorkers.

And New Yorkers think they are different from Angelenos. But as someone who has been in both cities,

I think they have a lot in common. It's true that the climate is different.

But this idea of living in a difficult city - because LA is a difficult city too, there's traffic, a lot of hard things.

I think people who are in New York and Los Angeles are there on a mission. A career mission,

a mission to be in a marvelous city, and that means some inconveniences.

Exactly, these are the cities with opportunities, if you want to become a movie star, a writer, anything.

So, tell me, how's single life in LA?

How is it different from New York.

I think it's pretty similar. In both cities, people are always, looking, looking.

For example, I can go out with a model one day, but she might go out with five other men the same week.

Everyone is always looking, as if they were in a fish market.

But here in New York it always seems like women want to know how much money you make.

In LA would it be what kind of car you drive?

Yes, which car, and...

Hold on a minute. And what car do you have?

I have a very sophisticated model of Converse All-Stars.

Whoa, but what is it like to be in Los Angeles without a car?

-Can you manage to get places? -I do.

This is important, if you're thinking of going to LA, you can survive for a few months without a car.

Uber is very cheap. I pay between $3 and $7 to get from one place to another.

You can survive like that but eventually you'll need a car.

Coming back for a minute to your love life, when you're on a date, and that person says "Can I have a ride home?"

-What do you say? -I say: "No problem! Get on my back and let's go!"

No, I say "I'll get an Uber for us."

Final question. Here in New York it's pretty safe. I'm guessing safety is not a problem in LA, or is it?

Los Angeles in like New York in movies. There's always a hero who has to save a woman who has been attacked.

But in New York that's not true. In New York it's very safe. But I think LA is not that safe.

It's not very dangerous but I don't feel all that safe.

So you must spend a lot of time saving women being attacked.

Yes, I put them on my shoulders and we go!

Hey, Eric, can you stick around for the Idiot Challenge? It's going to be different this time.

Ah no, I didn't come from Los Angeles to lose this Fricking Idiot Challenge again.

We'll see...soon.

IDIOT CHALLENGE

Welcome to another Idiot Challenge, and it's a historic one with this extra-idiotic duo,

Anyway, this is how it works...

A special flavor of idiocy.

It's very simple, We selected some difficult or unusual words in Portuguese that gringos who speak Portuguese

might not know, and we challenge these two to create some creative sentences, or at least sensical sentences.

They will have one minute to read the words in Portuguese and to prepare their answer.

And then you and I will choose the best, the biggest FRICKING IDIOT of the day. Here are the words.

-3-2-1...go! -I'm rooting for myself.

No copying! Don't copy my poetry, you idiot.

OK, time is running out!

This is from a work by Machado de Assis.

-Done? -Done.

Let's start with Eric.

-I'm dating a woman from Lepe...Leper. -Doesn't matter, it's wrong either way.

I made a bowl of riot fruit for her. And she was so happy that she wanted to have my child.

Now we have one, and she is named "Flirt".

She is a good daughter but she's in prison for "falling to pieces" a dog.

-Go, Seth. -I like the part where you had a male daughter.

I was in a boat on the Solimões River with 300 people, all fighting over where to hang up their hammocks.

It was a riot of people. I know that's right, but they others are wrong.

Someone wanted to steal my place, and I said "You leper!"

Go over there with the other flirty women and fall to pieces to hell!

I wash my hands of this. You all will help me decide who created the best sentences in this Idiot Challenge.

Was it Eric?

Was it Seth?

-Eric? -Seth?

I can't believe it! Finally, really, this is a historic Idiot Challenge! For the first time, Eric wins!

He is NOT the fricking idiot of the day!

I have an idea for a punishment. Since poor Eric lives in Los Angeles constantly carrying friends and lovers

on his back, today's loser, should do a lap of this table carrying Eric!

Eric, you've been eating too much in Los Angeles.

Liberty Chronicles, Ep. 2: History from Above and Below - Duration: 19:31.

Anthony Comegna: From its very earliest iterations, really the first written histories that we

have, history has been overwhelmingly conducted from above.

If you collect, say a thousand random historical tones, the really old books in the libraries

from across the ages, probably 95% or more of them will have been written from above.

That is to say they're about great men, [00:00:30] their great deeds, the great kingdoms and

empires and nation states they construct and rule.

Histories from above are about the big books, the big ideas, the big institutions, the big

thinkers, the massive events and the golden ages.

This is Liberty Chronicles, a project of Libertarianism.org.

I'm Anthony Comegna.

By studying history we empower ourselves to challenge received wisdom [00:01:00] and create

knowledge of our own.

There are many, many different methods one can adopt to do exactly that.

Today we'll be speaking about two very broad approaches to constructing narratives of past

events and interpreting their meaning for both actors in the past and for ourselves

in the present and the future.

I recently asked Jason Kuznicki, a historian here at the Cato Institute, to give us some

examples [00:01:30] of how exactly historians and historical education in the Ancient and

Medieval periods especially tended to support or justify existing institutions.

Jason Kuznicki: The earliest histories that we have are essentially chronicles.

They are chronicles of kings or emperors, when they ruled, what events took place when

they ruled and maybe some short commentaries about what they did well or badly.

When we [00:02:00] get to the Greeks, the founder of history conventionally is Herodotus,

although there were lots of historians before them they were mostly chronicles.

Herodotus though wants to tell a story of civilizational conflict between Greece and

Persia.

He is very intent on particular ideas about how an individual relates to the state.

The state [00:02:30] to him is in a sense a theater of virtue, it's a way for people

to demonstrate their virtue or lack thereof.

It is the opportunity that we have on earth to show that we can be self sacrificing for

something that is greater than us, which ought to be our country, our homeland, which is

exemplified by the state or by the polity.

Anthony Comegna: Our study of history instructs [00:03:00] us as to how the state should be

run, what kind of state we should want, and therefore what kind of society we should have,

how it should be organized and so on.

Jason Kuznicki: Ancient historians were very explicit about this.

People like Herodotus and later Thucydides, very clear that what they were doing was writing

an instruction manual, a manual for how to have a good polity and how to be a member

of it, and how to do a good job at that.

That's why you [00:03:30] would study history, was to improve your participation, to improve

your civic participation up to and including by sacrificing your life if necessary.

Anthony Comegna: What exactly changed between the Ancient Medieval world and today to make

historians and people studying the past take average people and every day events seriously?

Jason Kuznicki: Average people began to have more disposable income.

This is one area [00:04:00] where there really is an economic cause.

The economic cause really is the rising bourgeoisie.

People wanted to read histories about things besides just state power and how to be a good

citizen soldier.

People nowadays have much more interest in reading cultural history and in reading scientific

history, and in reading lives of people who simply led interesting lives whether or not

they were functionaries of [00:04:30] the state or guiding the state in some way.

Anthony Comegna: To your mind it doesn't have a whole lot to do with the intellectuals themselves,

it's more about the marketplace.

Jason Kuznicki: I think it is a market driven phenomenon.

When you look at who wrote histories in the Ancient world, they tended to be people who

were already of the upper classes, and they tended to be people who were already very

deeply involved with the government in one way or the other.

Even in Imperial Rome where you've got political histories that were sometimes written from

a critical [00:05:00] viewpoint, they are still very intensely political history.

Tacitus writes in this vein a lot.

You find much less writing about what is it like to just live in say a Roman town and

what's day to day life like for people, or how did Greek theater develop, what's the

history of the theater.

You don't find histories like that so much.

Anthony Comegna: It strikes me that people used to very interested [00:05:30] in Philology

and things like that as a matter of history, learning the origin of language.

I mean, that's a very from below sort of history, and people have a deep interest in that.

Jason Kuznicki: You're absolutely right that Philology is an example of history from below.

The beginnings of that, I think, come from the church because church men were very intensely

interested in language.

This is not something that relates directly to the state or to government.

It comes from the fact [00:06:00] that they are themselves highly literate.

They are very concerned with the meanings of words because of theological disputes and

the need to get their theology right.

They are concerned because they believe with Isidore of Seville that words have power,

words are ontologically important.

They are important in the order of the universe.

When Isidore of Seville writes this very long treatment of etymologies and of the imagined

origins of [00:06:30] words, he's trying to get a handle on creation.

He's trying to understand creation.

Now, a lot of his etymologies turn out to be completely fake and spurious, but it's

an interesting attempt to show how things work, and to do so by looking at the history

of words.

It's a very interesting document, the etymologies is, in the history of history.

Anthony Comegna: Because history from above is [00:07:00] usually about these great, big

people, these great, big blob units, political units like kingdoms and empires, they're usually

narratives that are entirely connected to the perspectives of elites in society.

Elites are the only people, after all, who have possessed a strong historical voice throughout

most of time.

This is sometimes not necessarily a choice the historian makes, [00:07:30] so much as

it is a choice thrust upon them by the weight of the evidence.

So much of what we have that we know about the past simply comes to us from the elite

echelons of society.

Gradually, as we learn about the past this way, we come to actually understand the world

from the elite point of view, so much so that we even internalize it and accept the world

that is given to us, that we're born into, [00:08:00] as though it were the world that

naturally is supposed to be.

We take history as given as though it's a fact of nature.

It has been said by many different people in many different ways that history is myth

trying to become nature.

That's exactly what history from above tends to promote.

A world in which some rule over others seems so natural to some of us, that to pause it

otherwise is often immediately dismissed as Utopian, foolish, [00:08:30] even dangerous

simply to bring to expression.

Is there no saving grace here?

After all, haven't those with the most concentrated political power, the greatest amounts of wealth,

and the most cultural influence been the most significant to history when everyone's contributions

are tallied up?

Well, you might think that if you've never seriously considered history from below.

You might not have considered history from below in part at least because [00:09:00]

elites do not want you to seriously consider it.

To them, they are the natural rulers and we are the natural slaves, surfs, or today democratic

rubber stampers.

The historical record has been terribly biased by the perspective from above.

A view from below is therefore an absolutely necessary corrective.

History from below is the history of average people, marginalized people, every day activities,

emergent social phenomenon, [00:09:30] things that are not centrally planned or put into

place by a single will acting.

It's the history of those people and subjects largely excluded by traditionally histories.

For some examples of this, some ideas to get us going here, I want to turn to a poem.

This is a poem called Questions From a Worker Who Reads: 1935.

Narrator: Questions From a Worker Who Reads by Bertolt [00:10:00] Brecht, 1935.

"Who built Thebes of the 7 gates?

In the books you will read the names of kings.

Did the kings haul up the lumps of rock?

And Babylon, many times demolished, Who raised it up so many times?

In what houses of gold glittering Lima did its builders live?

Where, the evening that the Great Wall of China was finished, did the [00:10:30] masons

go?

Great Rome is full of triumphal arches.

Who erected them?

Over whom did the Caesars triumph?

Had Byzantium, much praised in song, only palaces for its inhabitants?

Even in fabled Atlantis, the night that the ocean engulfed it, the drowning still cried

out for their slaves.

The young Alexander conquered India.

Was he alone?

[00:11:00] Caesar defeated the Gauls.

Did he not even have a cook with him?

Philip of Spain wept when his armada went down.

Was he the only one to weep?

Frederick the 2nd won the 7 Years War.

Who else won it?

Every page a victory.

Who cooked the feast for the victors?

Every 10 years a great man.

Who [00:11:30] paid the bill?

So many reports.

So many questions."

Anthony Comegna: Naturally one should not only do history from below, but we certainly

cannot simply do history from above either.

Rather, we should be painfully aware of how shifting our perspective shifts the facts

of the past [00:12:00] as well an interpret our sources accordingly.

Let's go through some examples to see exactly how history from below is a necessary corrective

to essentially millennia of history from above.

More often than not history from above results in narratives that serve the self interests

both of the historians and the powerful people who benefit from intellectual defenses of

the status quo.

A professor of mine in graduate school, named Marcus Rediker, [00:12:30] was the best lecturer

I ever saw.

He started his semesters with undergraduates by pointing out to them the idea that history

is myth trying to become nature by giving a list of several very widely accepted historical

myths.

First the poor will always be with you.

This is a Bible verse, Mark 14:7, "The poor will always be with you."

Well, is this necessarily the case?

Is poverty a fact of nature [00:13:00] or a fact of history?

Are we condemned to forever have rich and poor, simply because there always have been

rich and poor?

I certainly see no particular reason to think so, and when we accept a statement like this

as a fact of nature rather than a fact of history, we come to accept the world we're

used to as though it was the only world that could or ever should be.

Our second myth is that a woman's place is in the home.

[00:13:30] Now, throughout most of time and in most places around the planet, men have

forcibly subordinated women through a long series of historical events, culminating in

societies that imagine it is natural and right that women be constrained from individual

participation in society.

Does this mean, however, that there is something in the genetic code of women that will cause

them to explode or become damaged if they leave the house and run for parliament?

Certainly not.

Obviously that's ridiculous.

[00:14:00] Genetics may aide patriarchy, but the concept depends not on our DNA, but rather

our laws and customs.

Our histories produce patriarchy, not our natures.

Race is perhaps an even clearer example of this.

Race is an entirely contrived category.

It's socially invented with absolutely zero genetic basis.

Certainly people do look different from one another, I will grant you that, but phenotypical

[00:14:30] differences in skin tone or hair type account for a vanishingly small portion

of our genetics, so small in fact that if you plucked a random white European and a

random black Sub-Saharan African, the two individuals are more likely to share a greater

amount of their genetics than they would with random individuals in their own populations.

So similar are the fundamental building blocks nature provides us.

History however provides us with something much different and [00:15:00] much more sinister.

The law condemns some people to be slaves on the basis of their biology.

The law elevates others to the position of permanent or potential masters.

These legal and social categories are not given by genetics.

They are the products of centuries and millennia of deliberate action, usually on the part

of the powerful few, to justify their exploitation of weaker parties.

[00:15:30] Next is the myth of the pilgrim fathers as America's great origin myth, which

provides purpose and mission, and therefore justification for our society.

Most people probably do have some sense that the Puritans and Separatists in New England

did not in fact hope to establish this continent as some sort of Libertarian escape from the

old world where people could finally live freely and practice their religion.

In reality, the Colonial elites [00:16:00] uprooted the old world governing institutions

and grafted them onto American soils.

They imported the very same sorts of tyranny they supposedly wanted to escape.

This is shocking, but from roughly 1500 to 1800 five out of every six immigrants to the

new world were unfree.

What, was that Bacon's New Atlantis or some city on the hill, or were the Americas much

closer to a prison [00:16:30] planet?

Well, each of these myths are powerful, primarily because they are half truths.

Yes, people are biologically different.

No, those differences do not necessarily imply condemnation to particular social existences.

Yes, poverty has always existed and does not seem ready for conquest any time soon.

No, this does not mean that we will never be able to eliminate significant material

want.

[00:17:00] Yes, many colonists fled Europe and elsewhere to live freely on the frontiers

of civilization.

No, these actual liberty seekers were not successful on the whole.

There were small pockets of libertarianism and individualism, but they were quickly and

relatively cleanly rounded up and ironed out.

Historical myths captivate you with the truth and hoodwinks you with the falsehood.

All the while, you are likely [00:17:30] so impressed with the truths that you don't even

notice the trickery already afoot in your brain.

Who exactly creates these myths?

Who's interests do they serve?

You'll never really know until you do the work of history from below.

Sometimes doing history from below rather than above is as simple as broadening the

scope of your evidence beyond the relatively controllable published record.

[00:18:00] It might mean deep dives into personal diaries, letters, newspapers, pop and material

culture.

You might have to use archeological, anthropological evidence.

You might introduce a variety of methodological approaches to often studied subjects.

Practically every type of history you can imagine can be practiced both from above and

from below.

The very best historians are able to put together a holistic picture of human action and interaction,

[00:18:30] such that everybody, everyone and their agency can be accounted for, no one

unduly emphasized and no one's existence unjustly denied space in the record.

That's the sort of method we have adopted here.

So often we like to think that brilliant and courageous entrepreneurs should take the place

of emperors and legislators in dominating the historical record, but perhaps we should

remind ourselves from time to time at least that pencils are not [00:19:00] handed down

to us from great entrepreneurs.

They are built by countless millions from below.

3 Ways to Achieve Greatness - Duration: 4:16.

Hi! I'm Sharon Jurd and welcome to my Biz Blitz video

and today I want to talk to you about greatness and really achieving that level of greatness,

whatever that is for you. And it's really, really easy; in fact,

it doesn't take a lot of work but there are three things that help you along the way to your greatness.

Firstly, just be nice. Be a nice person, that's not so hard.

You just have to be mindful of other people and really be nice and care about them,

ask them how their day is, say hello, smile to people when you go and get your coffee in the morning.

The simple things around being a nice person are not that hard.

But what happens is sometimes we get busy in our day and not that we're not nice people

but we forget to be nice because you're busy, you're going to get coffee and you pay

and you ask and you might be on the phone, and you're busy and you're thinking about the email

you have to send and you actually forget to have a conversation with the person

that's serving you your coffee or at the fuel station or wherever you frequent.

So just remember in your day just to take those little moments of being nice.

Secondly, be grateful because you have a great life right now.

And yes you might want to achieve other things in your life but where you are right now, there's a lot to be grateful for.

And if you struggle with that a little bit, what I suggest you do at the end of the day or at the beginning

of the day or both, write down three things that you are grateful for,

just three things and it might be the sunshine, it might be the rain,

it may be the electricity you have in your home so you can boil a jug to make a cup of tea.

It doesn't have to be massive, massive things but if you start off with those little things,

you start to look around and take time to be grateful for the little things around you

where people try to think about the big things to be grateful for instead

of being grateful for just the little things in your every day life.

And thirdly, be giving. Give to people, don't hold on and be selfish of your knowledge, your time, your energy.

I'm always giving and some people say to me,

"Sharon, you give too much." Well, I don't think so and I don't believe so because

I know that the more I give, it will come back to me in ten-fold. And I'm not going to be selfish.

If I've learned something, if I've gone to a seminar and I've learned something

then I want to share it with the people who I hang around with.

And I don't learn things for me, yes it helps me,

but I learn things so I can share it with more people. So be giving.

People say to me, "With your videos, you give away a lot of information, a lot of strategies

and you have some free stuff on your website.

And there seems to be a lot of free stuff and I'm unsure whether

I should do that in my life and in my business," and I go, "Give away."

You always got more to give. And don't be scared of giving it because it will come back to you in ten-fold.

So there are my three things, they are:

Be nice, be a nice person and say hello, say good morning, smile to people.

Be grateful, write down at least three things that you're grateful for every day and thirdly, be giving.

If someone needs you, give to them and I know then that you will be on your way to greatness and that's how you will achieve greatness.

Thank you for listening, if you think this will be of value to your friends,

family and colleagues please share my video because I want to reach as many people as I can

and I hope that you can help me do that. Thank you for your time and I will talk to you soon.
