What's up guys, Frazier here for Complex News.
In most cases, the most popular show on television does not in any way line up with the critically
agreed upon best show on television.
For at least the last two years, maybe longer, the mathematically most-watched show on TV
has been The Big Bang Theory, the objectively terrible CBS sitcom that's been on the air
for ELEVEN seasons.
In 2016 the Nielsen Company reported Big Bang averages a whopping 20 million viewers per
episode.
Before that reign, another lazily executed CBS sitcom with microwaved scripts was king:
Two and a Half Men.
I love a good simple sitcom, but when it comes to asking just who are the millions of people
settling for these lobotomized layups, I have no answers.
They're in sore need of some HBO and Hulu accounts though.
Anyway, Big Bang Theory's run shows no immediate sign of slowing down.
They roped the adorable kid from Big Little Lies that's scary good at acting into a
spin-off, the cast stays scoring nominations and awards, and collectively they all probably
make a billion dollars.
BUT, interestingly enough, the show did take an unprecedented L this week.
Veteran TV reporter and numbers nerd Josef Adalian reported earlier today that another
series surpassed Big Bang to become the most-watched show of October 9.
What's most surprising is, it's a brand new series, ABC's THE GOOD DOCTOR.
Good Doctor stars Freddie Highmore, fresh off of thoroughly creeping us out for five
seasons as Norman Bates on the underrated A&E series BATES MOTEL.
Highmore plays Shaun Murphy, a young doctor who has autism and savant syndrome but is
nevertheless, next-level at this surgeon shit.
The show's made by DAVID SHORE, the same guy who made HOUSE, and this seems to be more
of the same: a hospital procedural set around people reacting to a guy who's hard to deal
with but is nevertheless a miracle-working genius.
I haven't watched the show but apparently I'm in the minority.
It came out of the gate with super strong ratings and now, as Adalian reports, its THIRD
episode has now surpassed the Big Bang Theory episode that aired on October 9 with 18.2
million viewers to Big Bang's 17.9 million.
This is all very nerdy but it could have major implications.
In a world of PEAK TV where new shows find it difficult to make a splash amongst the
400 other series airing in any given year, this show has leapt to the front of the pack
in just a short month.
And on a basic ass premise at that!
People love to talk about what's new on Netflix and roast broadcast networks as being,
well, basic, but between GOod Doctor and THIS IS US, also a blockbuster ratings series,
it's clear simple dramas still have weight.
For context, while Game of Thrones does indeed have the ratings to back up its hype, a critical
darling like Atlanta—which gets buzz on social media, at award shows and in reviews—only
actually averages under a million viewers.
And as Katz media group proved last month, only a very small amount of peole are watching
PEAK TV shows.
So is Good Doctor actually a good show?
I don't know, I may never know because it sounds boring as fuck to me and ratings have
never swayed my interest.
It has a 52 on Metacritic for what it's worth.
I guess it really just depends on your TV palette.
If you fucked with HOUSE and like a good procedural that also seems to be of the feel-good genre,
then give it a try.
At the very least it's gotta be better than Big Bang Theory.
