(Episode 90)

Why did you come out?

The night air is chilly.

Let's go in.

I don't know if Uri will like this.

Um...

What is it?

Mr. Jin Dohyeon is here at our place.

I feel bad.

But he's here today as Bora's brother,

so I don't think I can ask him to leave.

Okay.

You understand, right?

The bottom line is, you're telling me to leave.

Inspector Cha.

Fine.

What did Suja say?

She was obviously happy to get

a bunch of meat and fruit.

How is Mom feeling?

She's okay.

What about Uri?

She must've been tired. She's fast asleep.

She really likes Dohyeon.

And he seems to have a special fondness for her.

I was frankly a bit surprised.

You heard something, right?

Do I have to worry about it?

What? No.

I'm sure you'll figure it out,

but it does worry me a bit.

He's basically family now.

Geez. I'll handle it,

so just go to Bora.

And be sure to thank her for me.

Okay.

What's this?

A reward.

Thank you for today.

I didn't do much.

Sure you did.

You did everything.

This is why mothers-in-law get angry.

Do you know that?

Did I mess up again?

Since Dohyeon came over and we talked,

I feel much better.

Dad will come around one day,

and I'll be comfortable with him, too, right?

Ms. Lee Seonok.

I figured you'd want a drink.

A daughter is better than a son.

Suhyeok seemed oblivious.

Of course.

Did you just realize that?

Just one, and then off to bed.

Geez. I must be a loser.

Others are thrilled if their children marry rich.

But I got mad that Bora's brother

brought so much stuff.

I wondered if he thinks we can't afford food.

I don't know why I feel so uneasy.

You're just upset because of Bora's parents.

But let it go, for Suhyeok's sake.

And Bora is a real sweetheart.

What did I ever do?

They say a married son is a son no more.

Geez, Mom. Don't say things like that.

Suhyeok is a newlywed.

Cut him some slack.

Say, why did you go out earlier?

Did Inspector Cha come by?

Yes.

Just briefly, to bring Uri a gift.

But you sent him away?

What could I do?

Mr. Jin was here.

I couldn't shoo away my sister-in-law's brother.

(Officer Moo Gunghwa)

Why didn't you answer your phone last night?

My goodness. September's almost over, too.

After Chuseok next week,

won't the rest of the year just fly by?

We'll be busier, since we'll be on holiday patrol.

You'll get to go home, right?

Lucky you.

I don't know.

It was only nice when my mom was healthy.

Now I'm just visiting her at the nursing home.

It doesn't feel like a homecoming.

How is her health?

She has her ups and downs, of course.

It was nice when she used to make us rice cakes.

I prefer working here at the station.

At home, I'm in the kitchen all day,

and relatives nag me about getting married.

Isn't getting nagged 100 times better

than being harassed by drunks?

That's because you're a man.

Holiday stress is so hard on women.

Right, Officer Moo?

Sure.

As the head family, your family must go all out.

Sure.

Oh? Even your answers are in sync,

as if anyone would doubt you're partners.

Anyway, one of our biggest national holidays,

Chuseok, is coming up soon.

Since it's a long holiday,

it'll be a rather grueling week for us,

but amp up patrols

so the holiday goes by without major incident.

Yes, sir.

Inspector Cha,

Hwang wants you at the precinct this afternoon.

Yes, sir.

Report to me when you get back.

Yes.

I'm back.

Come sit here.

What is it?

Sangcheol, are you seeing Seonghui these days?

Pardon?

So it is true.

Then again, Gyeonga wouldn't have made it up.

We only met a couple of times about the kids.

Then why didn't you tell Gyeonga?

Why are you sneaking around

like there's something you're trying to hide?

I didn't want to worry her.

It's nothing pleasant.

All the more reason you should've told her.

What woman would like her husband

seeing his ex-wife without telling her?

Can we talk?

You're home.

Lunch will be ready soon.

Wait just a bit.

Come with me.

I heard you're upset I'm seeing my ex-wife.

Yes.

Why did you have to worry Mom

instead of talking to me?

Mr. Cha Sangcheol.

Why?

Do you think I'd do something with Seonghui?

Do you not know me?

If someone keeps quiet,

can't you just assume he has a reason

and let it go at that?

Why look at me like that?

When I'm cooking in the kitchen these days,

I'm reminded of Juyeong.

I wonder what I'm doing here,

leaving my son on his own.

I didn't know I'd be with you and think this way.

Couldn't you be a bit more attentive,

and visit Juyeong without my knowing,

and be honest about seeing your ex-wife?

All I wanted was that kind of effort,

but was I expecting

too much from you?

Chullae.

I've done the best I could, but it feels

like it's been for naught these days.

But Chullae...

Stop the sighing.

Hey, want to hear something that'll perk you up?

Haechan made me a sandwich yesterday.

Are you serious?

Yes.

He still isn't talking,

but what counts is, he responded to what I said.

Man, that squirt.

He did hold it in long enough.

Let's be glad he blew up now rather than later.

People who bottle things up

totally lose it when they explode.

Look at Taejin.

I think Taejin's planning to get married.

What?

He said he told Father

that he's getting married.

I doubt any further opposition will do anything.

He seems to have his heart set on it.

Father hasn't said anything, either,

so he's probably decided Taejin can't be stopped.

Why? Why did you want to see me?

I'm busy.

Your face looks drawn.

Did you call me here to tell me that?

Huijin.

I'll go if you have nothing to say.

I'm leaving him.

After all this time?

I can't help it if you don't believe me,

but I planned to regardless of you and Taejin.

Since I'm here, let me ask you something.

What was the reason?

Why have you been living like that?

Because that was the original condition.

That I wouldn't marry him.

After your father and I got divorced,

I vowed never to marry again.

But it only came back to bite me.

I swear.

I'm really leaving him.

Had I known, I would've left him

before showing up in front of you and Taejin.

Will you be okay?

Seeing how they ransacked the restaurant,

they seem like very scary people.

Don't worry.

I won't stupidly let them get the better of me.

How is Taejin doing?

It seems like

he's made up his mind to marry Officer Moo.

What?

I guess he can't live without her.

But you can't just sit back and watch.

After what happened with you,

no one dares to provoke him.

Why are you here?

I was asked to give a witness statement.

It looks like you've investigated

the restaurant ransacking.

What should I do?

If I'm to testify truthfully,

I must explain that I did it

because I got angry at Ms. Heo

for planning to steal what's mine

to give to you.

Would it be okay to expose her?

I didn't know how remarkable Ms. Heo was.

Her swindling and prior record aside,

a love affair as well?

So? Should I remind people again?

Could you handle it?

So Cha Taejin, watch who you're messing with.

There's a limit to my tolerance.

Fine.

Go ahead.

What is it that you can do?

Exploit poor people like your father has?

Or be true to yourself and go on power trips?

Go ahead and do whatever you like,

and I'll show you what happens.

You're always fired up whenever I see you.

Too bad it's just bravado, not fortitude.

Hello?

It's been a long time.

Yes.

Alas, here we are, seeing each other again.

You don't say.

Tea?

I'm fine.

So why did you want to see me?

Please take good care of Bora,

Seonok.

As you may have suspected,

our family situation is unusual,

so Bora grew up with a lot of heartache.

Some time before she left home, she told me

that she wanted to live freely.

My heart ached when she said that.

That's why I'm asking you this.

Can't you let her and Suhyeok move out?

I'd like to get them an apartment if I could,

but Daegap would be furious,

and you'd feel uncomfortable, too.

So I think it'd be nice if they could

live on their own by leasing a small apartment

with what Bora has.

Okay. I'll think about it.

I'll go if you're done.

One more thing.

You know that Dohyeon

has feelings for Moo Gunghwa, right?

That's another reason why I came.

It's bad enough as it is,

so I'm worried how Daegap will react

if he finds out,

and I'm also curious what Officer Moo thinks.

Don't worry.

My daughter is in love with someone else.

He works with her at the station.

He's never been married,

so his family is opposed right now,

but Inspector Cha wants us to wait,

as he says he can never leave her.

So you just

reason with Bora's brother

so that he moves on.

You have nothing to worry about on our end.

You still go around provoking the wrong people.

Did you call me here to cover up

Mr. Jin Dohyeon's case?

He'll only be slapped with a fine,

while you'll bear the full brunt of it.

How can I let that happen, as your superior?

Senior Inspector Hwang.

You know

who your mother lives with, right?

If you sniff around Chairman Jin,

you'll be doing the same to your mother.

So? Should we implicate Jin Dohyeon?

Is that what you want?

Then I'll gladly render my support.

Don't get carried away.

The only thing people will remember

is your mother's scandal.

If what your mother did

and how she's living now is exposed,

do you think you'll last in this organization?

Your mother is a disgrace not only to you,

but also to the police force at large.

(Officer Moo Gunghwa)

What do you think, Juyeong?

I guess she's cute.

She's a student of mine.

She works at a conglomerate

and has a great personality.

What would someone like her see in me?

She took to you.

I showed her your picture.

She said you were very cute.

Cute? I'm not some puppy.

Let me see.

Wow. Hey, she's pretty.

She has a nice body, too.

She's voluptuous and tall.

She's fine. Meet her.

Good grief.

Suhyeok.

I'd meet her right away if I were you.

So you like voluptuous women?

Someone tall and long-limbed?

Huh? No, I just...

Geez. You have zero tact.

I was blinking to give you a sign,

yet you dug your own grave.

I was mistaken.

I thought I was your ideal type,

but you like the sexy types?

No, Bora. It's not that...

Suhyeok was trying to encourage me.

It wasn't because he found her attractive.

That's right.

Though I can't say he never liked the sexy types.

Hey, you squirt.

Where are you going?

What are you doing?

I'm working.

You told me to organize the data.

Shall we have coffee before we get started?

Go away.

I have to work.

Why bother with someone who's not voluptuous?

Hey, Jin Bora.

Aren't you being too childish?

I'm really disappointed.

They say all men are the same.

And you're no different.

Who knew you were into sexy, voluptuous girls?

Are you jealous?

How scary.

You're even prettier when you glare at me.

Smile, kiddo. Smile.

If you don't smile, I'll kiss you.

Geez. Let go.

Good grief.

- Seriously... / - What?

Mom, what's wrong?

What?

You've been in a bad mood.

You barely answer me.

We're back.

We're back.

Hi, Bora.

What's that?

What else?

Ms. Lee Seonok's favorite rice cakes and sausage.

Let's gain some weight tonight.

Come in.

Why?

You two move out.

Mother.

Mom, what's the matter?

I think it would be for the best.

Geez, Mom.

We can't afford to get our own place.

Are you putting me down in front of Bora?

We'd have moved out already if we had the money.

You shouldn't pull rank in front of your son.

I'm not kidding.

Living like this is uncomfortable for me,

and it must be uncomfortable for you, too.

Just get a small studio

near your office and live on your own,

like newlyweds should.

I'm going to live with Gunghwa and Uri.

What's gotten into you all of a sudden?

It's not sudden.

I've been thinking about it

ever since you said you were married.

Why be cramped here in this tiny place?

It must be uncomfortable for Bora.

I'm fine, Mother.

It's not always a good idea to live together.

Absence does make the heart grow fonder.

My son and my pretty daughter-in-law,

it's because I want to get along with you guys.

Mom, what's gotten into you?

Mom.

Did you tell your mother we're getting married?

I told my dad.

You see,

it's been so crazy because of Uri...

It's okay.

I'll go tell her myself.

It looked brutal in there.

And Inspector Cha seemed distraught,

as if he'd been told something awful.

I'm back.

Hi.

It was tough, right?

It was fine.

I heard the gist of it.

Seeing that Hwang is continuing to pressure you,

someone higher up is involved.

Will you be okay?

It doesn't matter, sir.

Inspector Cha.

Please don't stop me.

I can't walk away from this.

I'm going to see this through.

Very well then. Go unwind.

See you tomorrow, sir.

Bye.

You'll have to help him.

Why are you acting like this

instead of talking him out of it?

How much more can I help him?

A lot more. A whole lot more.

Geez. You're driving me nuts.

Why are you being like this?

He even won a contest

while he was a student at Hanguk University.

Then why is he in such a wretched state,

instead of getting a corporate job?

He must've given up due to his colorblindness.

Good grief. It's just one thing after another.

What about his family?

His father died of an illness when he was

in middle school, and his sister's a cop...

That girl had a nasty temper.

What about her? Is she married?

She's widowed.

Widowed?

Her husband Bong Yunjae, also a cop,

died in a traffic accident

before their child was born.

Geez. What a cursed family.

Darn it.

Who did you say he was?

Officer Bong Yunjae.

What's wrong, sir?

Oh, nothing.

You can go now.

Yes, sir.

Bong Yunjae...

It can't be...

What is it that you can do?

Exploit poor people like your father has?

Or be true to yourself and go on power trips?

Go ahead and do whatever you like,

and I'll show you what happens.

Hi, it's me.

Why haven't you been answering the phone?

I was worried sick.

I'll be waiting in front of your house.

Why are you being like this to me?

I do understand why you're upset,

but there was nothing I could do.

Yes, I know it's not your fault.

Then why are you being like this?

Don't you trust me?

It's not that I don't trust you.

At this point, I don't know anymore

if I can do this.

What are you talking about?

Like you said, I must not be ready.

So are you saying that

we should break up?

Yes.

Fine.

Let's end things here.

I'm sorry.

In retrospect, we've thought hard enough,

hesitated long enough,

and I've tried to run as much as I could.

I guess we've done all that we could.

But frankly, I'm a bit disappointed.

Why are you doing this?

Are you scared to take the plunge?

Was this the extent of your love for me?

Yes, this is all I've got.

So let's just call it quits.

Fine.

What can I say to someone who's unsure?

It's actually for the better.

Thank you for being honest with me.

I want us to move out.

Be nicer to Bora if you're trying.

Bong Uri!

You must've timed it just right.

What can we do,

if this is our destiny?

What ill-fated ties...

So she was the wife of the cop who got killed...

If you're going to drink and be wayward,

move out.

We broke up.

Don't mention marriage to me again.

I heard we're both being transferred...

It's my fault...

Moo Gunghwa, pull yourself together.

You're Uri's mom.

He said it was over.

Non-Native vs Native English teachers: CULTURE and Language - Duration: 6:49.

Hi there, Vladimir here with another video on how to learn English

I start my book Virtually Native with some of the biggest myths about

learning a second language

the biggest of them all is the myth that native speakers are the best teachers.

Native speakers of any language not just native speakers of English

Native speakers can get a job anywhere in the world, without any teaching experience

or teaching qualifications

just for being native.

one common argument in favor of learning from native speaking teachers is

their superior knowledge about their culture

This is by far the weakest argument and here is why

Native speakers are preferred because of their knowledge about their own culture

Where do I start?

This is wrong on so many levels

First of all,

I'm not at all sold on the idea of language and culture having strong relationship

the belief that language is influenced by culture

especially when talking about wide-spread languages like

Spanish, Russian, French Arabic and of course English

A native speaker of Spanish from Barcelona

and one from La Paz

There will most certainly be vocabulary differences related to business and technology

but the core language is still Spanish

as a tool of communication is still Spanish

whereas the culture is vastly different.

We could probably make a similar comparison between North and Sound Korean language

How about a native English speaker from Miami Florida and one from Dublin Ireland

I'm really fuzzy on the relationship between culture and language

but for the sake of argument let us agree that they are closely related

to teach a foreign language you need knowledge of the culture

My first question is:

who is that English language teacher who would be so bold to say that

he or she knows Anglophone culture.

an English teacher from Buffalo New York telling you he knows American culture

America, this melting pot, the most multicultural country in the world

Really you know American culture?

In America we do this, and that, we say this and that.

Really?

You speak on behalf of 320 million people

What does an ESL teacher born in Canada to Indian parents know about Canadian culture?

What is Canadian culture?

Even I, born and raised in a small country, would not presume to say that I know Bulgarian culture

stereotype people one way or another

make sweeping generalizations about what Bulgarians are like

My second question:

is that the job of a language teacher explaining culture?

If you want to know about American or British culture just read books

written by experts in the subject

don't listen to some guy from Birmingham England

save yourself some time and money and buy an online course for instance

Or just google it,

meanings of idiomatic expressions, etymology of words and so on and so forth.

Dictionaries, Wikipedia, forums it's all there, for free

And my last question, issue,

The last point I want to make is that

by becoming the only true global language, for better or worse

English belongs to nobody culturally, socially or any other way

Nobody can make cultural, social, ethnic claims on the English language

it belongs to the world now.

This culture-and-native speaker argument is such a ridiculous one

you won't find anything about culture in my book Virtually Native

you know what you are going to find

you will find how to use movies to learn English

The truth of the matter is that

to master a foreign language you need to listen to a lot of native and non-native speech

and the best and most fun way to do that is through movies and TV shows

you practice your listening and learn about culture

movies are the best way to learn about a culture.

In the chapter on listening I talk a lot about learning English through movies

something native speakers know nothing about

My book Virtually Native is available at Amazon and virtuallynative.com

Knotting a bag with the friendship bracelet technique: zigzag border in detail - Duration: 14:16.

In this video I will show you how to knot this zigzag.

It is here in the large design, so this zigzag, and the other side,

because I noticed when I was knotting this yesterday,

here,

that maybe, for those with less experience with knotting,

it could be difficult because of the turns you have to make.

So that is what I will show you now.

The craftsteacher, tatting, knotting, crochet, weaving, knitting

Okay, I have a detail of the zigzag part here

or the diamond shape, whatever you like to call it.

This upper row with knots is what we did for the border,

so these 2 knots, these 2 purple ones here, here and here, I already did them

in the first row.

Now I will work in this order

first I will knot this row with purple knots

and next this row with purple knots

until the point where you have to make a turn.

So, if you will look at this, not to this knot, because that's from the upper row,

you will see it's a purple knot and 2 threads enter it,

one coming from the blue knot and one from the purple knot,

and that's very easy, it just goes from left to right,

and then at a point you see it crossing 4 orange threads.

Well, the first 3 orange threads are simple,

it just goes from left to right

but the last orange thread is where you change direction.

So we will be making 5 knots,

of which the last, 1, 2, 3, 4 ,5, yes, that's correct,

will change from direction,

and they're all purple knots,

so purple is going to be my working thread.

So it's this thread

which I will use to knot with,

so first it's simple, just purple around purple

and simply from left to right,

so no problem.

I take the first orange thread,

also simply from left to right,

second orange thread,

the third,

and then at the last one we will change direction.

A purple knot, so you will knot with the purple thread,

and now you will change direction, so take over the thread,

hold it taut

and knot the other way

and now you can see that the orange thread ends up to the right side

and the purple thread goes back inwards again.

You can also see this happening here, this purple thread, it goes here

to the left, and the orange thread goes that way.

We're going to do the same on the other side with the red.

We're again doing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 knots.

The first is again just purple around purple

and with the first 3 reds you work from right to left

and the last one, it will make a turn.

So we will take this thread,

it's going to be my working thread,

so the first knot is purple around purple,

next around the first red thread,

around the second red thread,

around the third thread,

and with the fourth we will make a turn.

So you start working to this side,

next you take it over,

you hold taut the red thread,

and you finish it.

Okay, that's part one.

Now we're going to do the next purple row.

It starts with this, so that's easy

it has 2 purple threads that go in and 2 purple threads that go out, very simple

and next we go around an orange thread, first, second,

you see, these orange threads just go to that side

and the purple one goes to that side

and then here, at the third orange thread, we will make a turn.

So here we go,

purple around purple,

simple,

you go around the first orange thread

you go around the second orange thread

and with the next orange thread,

and it is actually quite obvious, because this one already went that way,

you will make a turn,

and ready.

We will do the same on the red side.

This you just made, so we're going now

around the 3 red threads, and make a turn at the last one.

So, here is the purple thread,

around the red thread,

around the second red thread,

and with the third we will make a turn.

Okay, this was the purple border,

and now we're going to do this.

This will be a block of 4 orange knots

and first I will do,

let's see, which one will I do, I will first go this way,

I will first make these 2.

Here it will be an orange knot and the thread just goes from right to the left

around the red thread,

and at the next orange knot we will make a turn to the right.

So, this orange thread,

we will knot it around the first red thread

and next we will make a turn around the second red thread,

so that this thread will end up to the right.

Next we will make these 2, so,

here you see, at the first knot,

that a turn is made

and this one will just be knotted from left to right.

So this orange thread,

it makes a turn around the red thread,

so you start to this side,

and then it goes to the right,

and this orange thread just goes

around the red thread from left to the right.

So, as you can see, and when you compare it to this here,

we just knotted it till this point,

and now we will continue knotting this lower border.

I will first do the purples that are here under the orange knots,

to this side and to this side

and as you can see that's quite simple,

you don't have to make turns, because it just goes in the same direction every time.

So I take this thread,

I will knot it around the 2 orange threads,

and I will do the same on the other side

around the red threads.

And I will also finish it

around the next purple thread that I come across,

I will show you this in the design.

You can see here it completely surrounds it,

so I just first knotted these 2,

then these 2 and next the middle one that's right beneath the orange diamond.

I will do the same now for the other purple border on this side

and here you will also see, quite simple,

it just goes straight on, straight on, straight on,

straight on, straight on, straight on.

So I take my purple thread,

it goes around the second orange thread.

Take care the threads are in the right order,

you always have to pay attention to that of course.

Last orange thread,

and over this purple thread,

you see, it's just straight on, straight on, straight on,

and on the other side

around the red thread

the red thread

this red thread

and around the next 2 purple threads.

And now you have finished knotting this first zigzag,

and if you continue with the design,

look, here you see the orange diamond for example

and when you continue, you will continue again knotting with orange

and then you will get the pattern, these red parts that move around the pattern.

Okay,

I hope this helped you further.

Oh yes, one thing I wanted to show you. Look, you can see now very clearly that these

4 red threads come out at this side, these 4 orange threads on this side,

and that's your check if you've done it right.

Okay, till next time.
