Today we're talking about how to throw grip and throw a nasty splitter.
"Hey John, I've been having trouble with my control with my change up and I was wondering
if you could make a video showing how to grip and throw a splitter and if a splitter is
a good alternative for the change up.
Thank you".
Thank you so much for the question.
I'm sorry I didn't catch your name or I may have when we were text messaging.
It's just been so long.
I know I've been slow to get these videos out but I really appreciate the question and
of course after this video I'm going to find you in the text message and hit you up and
let you know I got your video done.
But thank you so much for the question and I'm sorry I didn't have your name ready for
this video but let me answer your question for you.
You're having trouble locating or having accuracy with your change up.
That happens.
I didn't have a great change up either.
That's ok.
At least you are self aware of what pitches are good for you and what isn't.
So now you're asking is the split finger a good alternative.
Now, you look like a younger guy, probably in high school aged I'm guessing.
The split finger isn't necessarily a great pitch for younger guys just because it's going
to put a little more stress on your elbow but that doesn't mean there's not a lot of
high school guys out there that are throwing it.
So for you, you have to kind of analyze the risk vs reward.
Would you throw that yet?
I threw a forkball but it wasn't until later in my career.
Like the last 2 years of my baseball career and I always had a good one.
I just never brought it into games just because to me the risk vs reward wasn't there and
so for younger guys I don't necessarily recommend it because that risk vs reward might not be
for you at that time.
But I will go ahead and show you how to throw it because I know some of you guys watching
may not be at the high school level or the risk vs reward for you might be worth it.
I don't know.
But let's talk about the split finger real quick.
The split finger, a little bit different than the forkball I threw but very similar, all
you're going to do is grip this ball on the laces.
I don't know if you can see my middle finger is here on this lace, my pointer here is on
this lace, and the thumb is kind of right underneath on the other lace.
Now, when we throw this ball, my ring finger and my pointer finger are not even, excuse
me my pinky finger, are not even touching.
Now when we throw this ball we want to come straight through.
Some guys like to pull down on the pointer finger a little bit to get a little bit of
a tumble to it.
But I really like to come straight through it.
It gets more of a, almost like a knuckle if you pull it hard enough.
So it's right here and it kind of knuckles a little bit and it might dive and dip at
the end.
Again, some guys like to pull on this one and get a little bit of like a spin tumble
to it and it kind of has a, sometimes it will have a knuckle and spin down and arm side.
You can mess with it, play with it, see what works best for you.
But that is the grip right there and that's how you throw it.
It is an alternative to the change up because it's a slower pitch.
Obviously our job as a pitcher is to disrupt that batters timing and balance.
Timing by throwing fast pitches and slow pitches and the split finger is a slow pitch so it
is a replacement for the change up if your change up is garbage like mine and yours but
again for you a younger guy the risk vs reward might not be there for you just yet.
So be careful when you're throwing it.
If you have any pain in your arm or discomfort or it doesn't feel right at all, don't throw
it.
You don't need to.
You're too young.
For some of you older guys who are getting to the end of your game, maybe some of you
men's league boys trying to break out everything in the kitchen sink, but the kitchen sink,
and the kitchen sink, you might want to try throwing that.
I hope this helps.
I hope that answered your question.
Thank you so much for your question.
