(car engine)

- It's lunchtime, and this is Brad Anderson's lunch break.

(happy music)

Two of my favorite things about Microsoft,

are the smart people that constantly visit campus,

and the great fleet of shuttles.

Wherever I can I try to take advantage

of both of these things, and grab lunch with some of

the tech industry's best and brightest.

(happy music)

Today, I'll finish up my conversation

with Jeff Teper, the creator of SharePoint.

(happy music) (engine revving)

I was thinking about a lot of

the things that you and I have done together.

About five years ago I remember sending you a mail.

I was like, "Jeff, hey this whole thing

with non-Windows devices,

we gotta' do some work together here.

You know, I've got this management stuff I'm working on.

There's things you're working on.

Let's get together and let's, - Yeah.

- Let's get a plan for how productivity

and management come together.

You remember when you forwarded that message to Rajesh,

what Rajesh said? - Yeah.

- I can still remember your exact comment was,

"Brad's a Windows guy."

You remember this? - I do, I do.

- Yes, I'm sorry I was a little snippy that meeting,

but I was, you know, "Why am I talking to Brad?"

- He said, "No, Brad's a Windows guy."

- Yeah.

- And I said, "No, Brad's a business guy.

"Brad wants to build the product

"that customers want."

You had a set of competitors or alternatives

that had a pretty crappy set of

productivity, apps. - apps.

- And we had competitors that didn't really

have the manageability,

and so besides being the thing our customers wanted,

it was sort of a win-win.

- [Brad] Okay so we're gonna' play a game

called This or That. - Sure.

- So I'm gonna' give you a couple of descriptions,

and I'm gonna' give you a phrase or a word

and you're gonna' tell me, is it this,

is it that, or is it both.

- [Jeff] Okay.

- Okay, the two terms we're gonna' work with are

Malware, or am I talking about Minecraft.

So Malware or Minecraft. - Malware or Minecraft, okay.

- Way too many people in your workforce

have it running in the background.

- Uh, Minecraft.

- Your kids probably downloaded it on your phone

when you weren't looking.

- Malware.

I answered both those wrong.

They both could be right, but.

- Millions of people all over the world

are working on it right now.

- Uh, Malware.

- At least it gets kids interested in technology.

- Minecraft.

- [Brad] (laughs) Okay, it's both,

could be. - That could be bumped.

- There's a huge secondary economy

for people who are good at building it.

- Oh, well that's, gosh.

I have to pick one?

- I heard that your first job in the software industry

was writing what, a vehicle simulator when you were 14?

- Oh, yeah yeah yeah, wow!

Yeah, wow, you really did dig deep.

(laughter)

So my Dad was a aerospace engineer,

and he had these algorithms for vehicle simulation

that he'd done in Fortran, in a PDP-11.

And he did some work on the side

from the company he worked with,

and I think he probably charged himself

out a hundred dollars an hour,

and he paid me like $7 an hour

to port the Fortran from the PDP-11

to the TRS-80 Model III. - Oh my word!

- And Fortran, whatever it was,

Fortran IV or Fortran 77. - Yep.

- And so I'd never, I had no idea what these algorithms did.

I didn't know what the outputs

they were supposed to do.

But there were some subtle differences,

as there always are in compilers,

with your data types and so forth,

where I had to run it on the PDP-11,

I had to run it on the TRS-80 Model III,

and make sure that I guess,

the car didn't crash. - And this is at 14?

- Yeah, yeah. - Wow.

- There's a ton of upper level math

involved with all that movement.

- Yes, matrix algebra. - You don't--

- I didn't really understand it.

- Just little stuff like that.

- I got it correct, my Dad fixed a couple of bugs,

but he did pay me, so I assume that must mean

that I did do it. - Well, 7 bucks an hour.

- When you and I were 14,

you know what, - Yeah.

- I was delivering newspapers - Yes.

- When I was 14, making a buck an hour.

- Yeah.

- Fun stat for you, we've had a quarter billion downloads

of OneDrive on iOS and Android.

And the-- - Quarter billion.

- The Google Play store, which is of course

the biggest store, 'cuz they have the most

mobile devices. - devices.

- [Jeff] But 800,000 people rated us 4.4 rating,

higher than the home team - Awesome.

- of Google Drive on that device,

which we're really proud of.

It's been really great to see,

and I think the things that people like

about OneDrive are the rich collaboration

capabilities with Office. - Oh yeah, yeah.

- We're starting to do unique things with intelligence.

- You know, what you and I have talked about is,

how do we build this in a way that is loved by users

and trusted by IT, - Yeah, yeah yeah.

- and nail them both, - That's a tricky thing.

- Is actually really hard.

- Yeah, and our teams, and this is good,

our teams fight sometimes so our users

and IT departments don't have to.

Because we will push each other,

- Correct.

- And we'll say, "Brad, this dialogue that came up,

"We gotta' do something about it."

- I know exactly what you're talking about.

- And you say, "Yeah, but if we just blow past it,

"here's the risk that you're,"

And that challenge that we do on each other

leads to, I think, some of our best work

where we balance usability and security.

(happy music)

- [Brad] Well Jeff, let's make sure we

make this a regular occasion,

so you know-- - Yeah, glad to do it.

- I know you've gotta' pick other people up

in the shuttle a lot, you know, don't quit your day job.

- Alright man, - Sounds great,

- Good to see you. - Bye!

- Alright, take care now. - See you buddy.

- Next time, on Brad Anderson's Lunch Break.

- Four of five years ago, I was at a function.

I was introduced to an elected member

of Parliament in New Zealand.

And someone introduced me as a Global Cloud Expert.

And this dude said, without a word of lie,

"Oh, you study the weather do you?"

Modern Triplet Rhythms - Essential jazz rhythms and exercises - Duration: 11:23.

(Jazz Guitar)

- Hi everybody, my name is Jens Larsen.

Most jazz guitar solos are made out of eighth-note lines,

so if you're listening to mainstream or hard bop

like Joe Pass, Pat Martino, George Benson,

then most of the time

you'll hear a lot of eighth-note lines,

and if you're playing yourself,

the eighth-note lines can be a little bit boring

and a little bit un-dynamic,

and it can be a good idea to check out some other rhythms

so that you can just create some variation in your solos,

and it doesn't get too boring or monotonous.

If you wanna improve your jazz guitar playing

and get better at playing over chord changes,

check out some new arpeggios or chord voicings,

then subscribe to my channel.

If you wanna make sure not to miss anything,

then click the little bell notification icon

next to the Subscribed button.

As you heard in the lick at the beginning of this video,

the rhythm that I'm introducing here is a triplet rhythm,

but it still has four notes,

and it's actually really easy

to convert your normal eighth-note lines

into lines using this rhythm,

so first I'm gonna go over

how you can actually feel this rhythm

and get it into your playing,

and how you can practice it,

and get it tight,

and sit well in the groove,

and then I'm gonna give you some examples

of how you can use it on different places in a ii-V-I,

and finally, I'm gonna talk a little bit about how you can

convert your own lines into lines using this rhythm.

Let's first just look at how we play this rhythm,

and how we understand it,

so if we take a look at example 1, that sounds like this.

(Jazz Guitar)

The way I hear this rhythm

is probably closer to the second bar,

where it's written out as an all-triplet rhythm,

but since we are relating it to eighth-note lines,

and we're using it in eighth-note lines,

I've written it out with eighth-notes,

just to keep it sort of connected to the lines

and the examples that we're gonna use it on.

To practice these rhythms, I have two different exercises.

One is approaching it from the triplet point of view,

and one is more coming out of the eighth-notes

and eighth-note triplets point of view.

I think you probably need to be able to do both

with a metronome without too much trouble

if you wanna use this in your playing,

but let's just go over them.

So the first one starts with the triplets.

(Jazz Guitar)

The idea in this exercise is quite simple.

We start by just establishing the quarter-note triplets

on top of the four-four, so that's the

(Jazz Guitar)

and then in the end we split the last note into two, so

(Jazz Guitar)

In the second exercise,

I'm starting with two eighth-notes

and an eighth-note triplet,

so we're kind of staying with the eighth-note flow

in the beginning,

and then just really establishing that, so we get

(Jazz Guitar)

And then, once that's there we take the last eighth-note,

and then tie that over to the first eighth-note

of the eighth-note triplet, and then we have this rhythm.

(Jazz Guitar)

In this first example, I'm using the rhythm on a ii chord

in a ii-V-I in the key of F major.

All the examples, actually,

are gonna be on this ii-V-I in F major,

and what I'm playing on the G minor chord here

is I'm using first

a first-inversion Bbmaj7 arpeggio, so

(Jazz Guitar)

like this

(Jazz Guitar)

and then the same thing with a G minor first inversion

(Jazz Guitar)

and then with the rhythm, that's gonna be

(Jazz Guitar)

and here you can also see

that I'm using alternate picking for the first two notes,

and then, because I'm starting on a downstroke,

I'm actually sweeping the next two

(Jazz Guitar)

and the same for the G minor

(Jazz Guitar)

and then I attach that to a C7 altered

(Jazz Guitar)

and then resolve that to Fmaj7.

If you wanna work on

using this type of picking for the rhythm,

then one way of working on that

is to take that type of figure

(Jazz Guitar)

and then move it through the scale on a string set,

and that way, you're gonna be checking out

a lot of different versions of arpeggios,

and you're gonna have a lot of material

that you can put to use on other chords.

That exercise could be something like this.

(Jazz Guitar)

In this next example,

I moved the triplet idea to the altered dominant, so the C7.

I start on the ii with just a scale run,

so the first part of the line

is just starting on A, and then

(Jazz Guitar)

basically up to Bb and then down the scale

(Jazz Guitar)

shifting position down to the C to go down under the Db,

and then on the C7 altered,

I'm starting on the Db,

and then I'm playing with the triplet rhythm,

first DbminMaj7 arpeggios, so this is one

(Jazz Guitar)

and then I'm chaining that together

with a Bbm7b5 arpeggio

(Jazz Guitar)

in this way

(Jazz Guitar)

and then I'm resolving this high Ab to the 9th,

so G on F

(Jazz Guitar)

If you wanna work on chaining together arpeggios

and using this rhythm, then you can do this exercise.

(Jazz Guitar)

So here I don't really have a set pattern for picking it,

so I'm just using alternate picking all the way,

as far as I can tell.

(Jazz Guitar)

And I think it's important

that you really have sort of a good visual reference,

that you really know that the D minor arpeggio

(Jazz Guitar)

looks like this, and then, while you're playing that,

that you're aware that you need to play

(Jazz Guitar)

this Bb afterwards,

so for this exercise, this first line

(Jazz Guitar)

will work really well for a G minor chord.

The second one

(Jazz Guitar)

could be really good for like a D minor or an Fmaj7,

and the same goes for the last one.

(Jazz Guitar)

So really what we have here is, first,

an idea that works well for Bb or G minor,

and then two ideas that will work well for an Fmaj7

or a D minor 7 chord in the key of F major.

(Jazz Guitar)

Here, I'm using the triplet rhythm

on a pentatonic scale idea on the I chord,

so on the Fmaj7.

The line starts with a G minor line

that skips from G to C on one string,

it's kind of coming out of pentatonic scales

with three notes per string,

(Jazz Guitar)

and then I'm shifting up here,

and then it's gonna be a scale run,

(Jazz Guitar)

and then a D minor triad,

(Jazz Guitar)

and on the C7, I'm starting on the flat 13, so

and then it's just really down the scale,

(Jazz Guitar)

and then we get to the Fmaj7,

and on the Fmaj7 I'm using A minor pentatonic,

so the idea is I'm on this Ab,

and I'm just resolving that up to the A,

and then I'm playing, essentially,

just this chord as an arpeggio, but then I'm playing it,

(Jazz Guitar)

and then shifting up,

because the next note in the scale would be this one,

and then I'm doing the same thing

from that note in the A minor pentatonic, so

(Jazz Guitar)

and then ending on the C, so

(Jazz Guitar)

If we separate the idea that I'm using on the Fmaj7,

and turn that into an exercise, just an A minor pentatonic,

then you can, of course, take that,

and use that in every place

that you can use a minor pentatonic scale,

which I've made a lot of videos on

that you can use in really a lot of different places.

That exercise sounds like this.

(Jazz Guitar)

Again, I don't have a set pattern

for when I'm picking this type of exercise,

so I'm relying mostly just on alternate picking,

and you'll see that a lot of the things that I work with,

in terms of quartal harmony,

and using drop 2 voicings,

and shell voicings,

you really get a lot of one-note-per-string type patterns,

and to deal with them,

you kinda wanna work on playing

all those one-note-per-string things with alternate picking,

because that's just the easiest,

most-flexible way to deal with it.

If you can do that, you don't really have to think about it.

That's a little bit how I approach it at least.

So I have exercises,

and I have videos on how to work on this,

and also picking exercises.

I'll link to them in the description of this video,

and you can check them out,

because I know that this is a fairly difficult topic

for a lot of people,

and it is something that you do need to work on,

but it's also very much worthwhile.

Just check some bluegrass

if you wanna see what that can lead to.

Just to demonstrate how easy it is to implement this

to your eighth-note lines, let's just look at this line.

(Jazz Guitar)

So just a regular ii-V-I in F again, and

(Jazz Guitar)

Bbmaj7 arpeggio,

scale run,

Emaj7#5 arpeggio,

and then a Db minor triad,

and then resolving to the 9.

So if we apply the rhythm to it, then we get this line.

(Jazz Guitar)

Of course, when you're doing it like this,

then I'm just putting it everywhere that I can,

and that works well as well,

and you might wanna do that once or twice in your solo.

When I use it like this,

then it's, of course, a bit much,

because I'm using it four times within the same ii-V-I,

but it is possible, and as you can hear,

it actually does sound okay,

and when you wanna implement this,

and when you wanna try using it,

you might not wanna use it all the time,

but you can use it like this,

and you should experiment with it

once you get comfortable playing that rhythm,

and it's a nice way

to just break up a stream of eighth-notes,

and just make something

that sounds a little bit different once in a while,

in terms of just the rhythm,

not only in terms of what notes you're playing.

I think it's important that you do this,

especially if you're not familiar

with using other rhythmical devices,

like three-note groupings,

and five-note groupings,

and playing across the bar line,

all stuff that I might be doing videos on later,

because I'm hoping to make this the first in a series,

and just to go over some different rhythmical

and phrasing ideas that you can use

to break up your solos

and add some other interesting things,

apart from what notes, and what scales,

and what arpeggios you're playing.

Apple Pay, Bitcoin and the Alternative for Online Payments - The Good, The Bad and The Tip - Duration: 3:23.

The good this week revolves around money...

(MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY)

...or rather, the ways we part it with.

Paying with a credit card is not a great user experience.

Bring out the wallet.

Find card.

Give it away.

Swipe.

Enter the amount on the processor.

Confirm.

Print receipt.

Sign.

Now you have this paper invoice you have to get rid of.

Cards get lost, stolen, they break, their magnetic bands fail, and they look like shit

after ten swipes.

Don't get me started on how cash is even worse.

We take visa.

It turns out, there's a better way, and there has been for a while, only it's taking longer

than expected to pick up.

The concept of using your phone to pay is almost too obvious in today's world.

It's contactless, password, fingerprint or face-protected and extra secure.

While Google Wallet was honestly the first widely implemented payment method, Apple Pay

has been spending A LOT of money to integrate NFC payments to their phones and to retails

stores, but more importantly, to get people to use it!

These things are going away.

Soon.

Good riddance.

One player that hasn't succeeded here is Bitcoin.

Bitcoin could very well be the future of currency, but they haven't solved the simplest thing:

making payments.

Sending Bitcoins is as simple as sending an email (NOT).

And... you can purchase anything with Bitcoin. (NOT).

The whole concept of having a 'wallet,' the fact that you can 'lose' all your money if

the hard drive where your wallet is, fails; this is not a simple UX, and they are still

miles away from mass adoption.

I own some Bitcoin, and I've made and lost some money with the extreme surges we've seen

in the past couple years... but I don't see why I would use it to pay for anything when

even a credit card is a simpler experience.

Now for the tip; when you are looking at conversion rates on websites, you want to reduce friction

to the absolute bare minimum.

Ever been on a checkout page and realize they don't take your American Express?

OLD LADY: But my very best friend is this little gem: the American Express card.

OLD LADY: Don't leave home without it.

Or they only take PayPal, and you don't have an account?

(Obviously because it sucks).

The struggle is real for your users and the fewer barriers you have, the better.

Companies like Stripe and Square are doing marvels around this.

Stripe, for example, lets you add Apple Pay to your checkout page with a few lines of code.

And Square's minimalistic... square lets anyone collect payments without going

through the trouble of getting a payment processor.

By the way, neither of those work in my home country of Costa Rica.

Stores have to go to a bank and pay thousands of dollars to get their credit card stations

and deal with their ridiculous 7% or 10% processing fees.

A year salary, right here. You know what I call them?

Fun coupons!

Stripe, Square will you please come over?

We'll have piña coladas and get caught in the rain.

Lip Bubble (Lip Trill) - Singing lessons and tips #40 - Duration: 2:31.

Welcome to your singing lessons

My name is Eilish San and today we're going to see

one of the exercises that are most recommended

in modern singing to improve your voice

You will have seen or heard in many places

that one of the exercises that are most used

to learn to sing is the lip trill, trumpet,

lip bubble or lip trill, this is because it is

an exercise with many benefits

One of the benefits is that it balances the airflow

with the right amount of resistance,

with this you learn to not sing with breaks in

your voice due to excess or lack of air

It releases the tension of the face, since to do it

you need to be relaxed, this helps you to feel

what it is like to sing without tension in lips and tongue

It helps with connecting the voice so it doesn't break

and you can sing the higher notes more easily

It also helps restarting your voice,

if it's been a while your voice does not work as usual,

this is an ideal exercise to put it back in tune

It's great to warm up the voice because it's a very easy

and relaxed exercise that does not create tensions

and does not need to follow any scale,

you can practice it as if it were a song

Let's see how to do it correctly

Place two fingers at the sides of your lips

and lightly hold the skin,

do not pull the skin backwards

or you won't be able to do it

Some people do it without using their fingers,

and it can be done like that,

but it is easier and more effective if you hold

your face as it removes tension from jaw and lips

You do not have to use a lot of air to do the exercise

correctly, or it will sound choppy and you won't get as much volume

The sound below this exercise is a UH,

it is a mixture between an A and an O,

as when yawning

To do it right, it will help you raising

your palate a little, do it like when yawning

and use that feeling with the exercise

It's an exercise you can do anywhere,

since as I said you do not need to do it

with any scale, and it will help you a lot,

I hope you comment and tell me

your experiences with this exercise

If you liked it, do like it

If you know of someone this might help

share it with her, she'll surely thank you

and so will I,

You can subscribe to my channel

so you will not miss any of my videos,

and remember, it's free
