Hi and welcome to Elite News.
For today's report we are going to look at Corporate Social Responsibility for the one
and only, Google.
Joining us today, we will have Haima Bali, who will be interviewing a Google employee
at the Google headquarters in Mountain View, California.
Hi I am here with Cristal, who works here at the Google headquarters in California.
Welcome to Google!
Let's get started.
So as everyone has probably heard, Google has quite a name for workplace perks.
We are here to see if Google can live up to its name.
How is it like to work here?
Well we definitely have a lot of perks that are not common to have such as the fitness
room, healthcare services, music classes, and variety of more where I'll take you in
our next steps.
So I'm gonna show you around now, let's go.
This is the music room where we offer music classes and you can come in here to relax
and get your mind off things.
Wow I see lots of people playing!
Yeah we also have special classes such as guitar lessons, you could take other lessons
that you want to take.
We also have degree programs here and this is a class setting of a typical day at Google.
And of course we have campus cafes and microkitchens.
So here is our fitness center.
We have a variety of classes if you want to go to yoga, if you want to go for free time.
Other than the fitness classes, we also have cooking classes, and this is the caterer's
entrance to the kitchen.
Wow, I hear people.
Yeah there are people cooking there right now and we cannot go in.
Oh do you want to hear something cool?
We also can bring our dogs to work!
So, Google is definitely excelling in wellness.
Can you tell me more about the employee benefits?
Yes, from the top of my head we have parental leave policies, retirement saving plans, and
death benefits.
They offer highly rated retirement savings, financial advisors and planning services which
is really helpful.
The employees are very well taken care of here!
It makes me want to work here.
Everyone here seems so excited to work.
Yeah, the atmosphere is very vibrant.
The goal is to accommodate Google's employees the best we can in all aspects of life, we
know that work is a huge part of an individual's life so we want to make it a lifestyle, and
comfortable, because the workplace is like a second home.
We value our employees and we want them to be here to stay.
That is Google's approach.
So workers are taken care of, what about the local community, or in other words, the greater
society?
Is there anything significant that Google does?Google has been participating in many
charities.
Google Givebacks and Charity: The Water is probably the most biggest one that involves
everyone around the world.
Their mission was to bring clean drinking water to every single person on the planet.
I've heard of that before, but how did they manage to do so?
Well, using Google Maps, this charity helps donors to connect with their donations.
After making your donations the donors are sent a set of GPS coordinates and photos where
they can track their donations and see the impact they are making.
That sounds really interesting and I hope there is a change.
Yes I agree and by using Google maps and Google tools this will reach out to the world and
inspire everyone to join organizations.
That is very nice.
We know that environmental concerns are arising and become more and more of an issue, especially
with climate change, and we want to know, how is Google addressing these concerns, being
one of the world's most largest and valuable brands?Well, Google has in fact many different
programs and initiatives that try to help preserve the environment.
One program that we have is our "Project Sunroof".
As more people are starting to lean towards solar energy, Google is making installing
solar panels easier and understandable for everyone to help people decrease their energy
bill.
This program puts Google's expansive data in mapping and computing resources to use,
helping calculate the best solar plan for you!
Wow that is interesting.
What other types of environmental initiatives does your company work on?
Yes, well another big environmental initiative we have would be our work towards encouraging
a green energy economy.
Our company has invested billions at developing wind and solar farms.
Additionally, as of 2017, Google has purchased enough renewable energy to match 100 percent
of its total electricity use, which has been a big goal of ours.
Also, fun fact, as part of our green initiative, Google regularly rents goats to mow the lawns
of their mountain view HQ.
The employees here even claim that they find it calming to see goats outside the windows.
Wow, that's definitely fascinating!
Thank you so much, this was lovely, I can see why Forbes ranked Google as having the
third best corporate social responsibility reputation as of this year.
Anything you would like to add?
Yeah I would just like to say I think Google has inspired many people around the world.
Google has given opportunities for everyone to shine and show others who they truly are.
They have been through so much just to make their employees happy by never giving up.
Since people are using technology to communicate and interact with each other from across the
world google was successful with making softwares to do so and this will spread the word out
to everyone.
In the future, Google should continue to guide everyone to the right path by supporting them
through charities and fundraisers.
They should continue to give free grants and scholarships to schools who are in need of
it.
Google is such a big company that it should be able to persuade their audience by advertising
and expanding.
I always think of myself as extremely lucky to work here, and I am grateful everyday that
I enjoy what I do because I know that there are a lot of people who don't feel the same
way.
Ok!
Thank you again!
And thank you for visiting!
Well, I think that this was a great experience.
Overall, I think that the way that Google has represented themselves is smart.
They have put in the effort to make their employees happy through multiple different
ways, which pays off for the company at the end of the day, as the more happy the employees
are, the more productive they will be.
I am also impressed in the way that Google has taken corporate social responsibility.
They have been using their very large platform to speak up and do good for society.
By the initiatives and programs that Google has created and continued to work on, such
as giving education to those that need it and encouraging a green energy economy, it
shows that Google is developing themselves in many ways, not just in their technology
industry.
I am reporting from the Google Headquarters in Mountain View, California, now back to
you Atika.
Thank you, Haima.
I personally love the attitude that Google has towards its employees, the amount of trust
they put into their employees by giving them all these assets and trusting them to be productive. In
the future, being one of the most influential companies in the worldLike Haima mentioned
earlier, Google has been ranked with one of the best corporate social responsible reputations
by multiple sources.
Reputation Institute, for example, globally ranks Google as having the best CSR Reputation
for the third year in a row.
The institute claims that four characteristics distinguish companies with strong CSR from
companies without: alignment, leadership, sincerity and engagement.
U.S. News and World Report mentions that Google is succeeding at not only at being good corporate
citizens, but also in communicating those characteristics to consumers who increasingly
rely on a brand's reputation in making purchasing decisions and recommending products and services
to others.
They also mention that Google has been carbon neutral since 2007 and has implemented numerous
environmentally friendly initiatives, including Google Green.
They add that Google was one of the first tech employers to release workplace diversity
statistics and has dedicated itself to expanding internet access.
Both sources based their rankings off of 3 aspects.
The first one is workplace which covers employee treatment and equal opportunity.
Secondly, they base it off of citizenship, which means the company's support of good
causes, positive societal influence and environmental responsibility.
And lastly governance, which looks at openness, transparency, ethical behaviour.
If you want to look at Google's financial reports you can visit their website where
you can find the quarterly and annual reports with the social audits and the shareholders
information.
That is it for today, and until next time.
I'm Atika and your watching Elite News.
