This is gonna be the companion video to the digital versus analog video that
preceded this one and it's gonna break down in detail how I do this analog
glass marker rendering my name is Eric Strebel I'm an industrial designer welcome
to my channel about product design and making I hope that you like enjoy and
become a subscriber make sure you give the video a thumbs up and then you hit
the bell hit the bell again so you get the little parentheses around it that
way you'll be notified every time I have a new video and this rendering it's a
very specific there's no perspective like the image on
the left and it's shot in a controlled studio environment it's important to
know what you're rendering and in what environment and in what context so that
you can tell the story about your product in the best way possible or for
whatever's appropriate so I'm gonna start with my sketchbook just regular 7
by 10 inch sketchbook white paper using a mechanical 0.7 millimeter lead pencil
I'm laying down everything in pencil so I can come back and erase these pencil
marks later I'm gonna start using my markers with a 10% cool gray you could
use a neutral gray here most glasses not warm but if you wanted that effect you
could use a warm gray this is how the shot is set up it's a straight on view
my light source is coming from the right over my shoulder onto the bottle I have
a white card on the right and a bigger white card on the left this is just a
guide it's not exactly like that next I'm coming in with a 20% gray and
I'm starting to lay in the refraction of the environment into this glass so
there's white and black which is pretty typical of a photography studio and with
glass like this that's cast you get all sort of imperfections in the
glass showing up the environment around it but it's very controlled and so we
get these very specific refractions onto the glass okay we're going to use a
black uniball example on the right of more of this refraction shown in clear
glass it's very black and white I'm want to build up the contrast in the glass
because that's what makes glass look the way it is it's that contrast between
black and white but it's not like a black and white all together there is a
lot of gray gradations I give you those soft transitions from dark to light in
addition to that contrast that make it look like glass the top is a chrome top
and so that contrast is going to be a little bit stronger and I'll talk a
little bit more about that in a little bit here's another example of a glass
bottle shot in a studio environment and what that kind of looks like and the
look that we are going for here on this rendering good thing to know about is
that the image on the right that was shot in a photography studio was
probably shot with a pretty long lens probably a hundred millimeter maybe even
150 Joanna makes everything very flat and very compressed we're gonna add in a
little bit of blue into the top and that's gonna suggest that chrome sokar
on the right you know its chrome because it has that blue in it let's add the
liquid into the cologne bottle and start off with a cream prismacolor markers I'm
going to use three different colors here next we're gonna come in with a deco
yellow it's a little bit more intense that's gonna give us that and then a
darker tulip yellow to give us a little bit of a refraction in the liquid
underneath the cap and you can see that image on the right there where we get a
little bit darker and throughout the glass especially in the corners where
that light starts the Poole now I'm gonna go for a ballpoint
pen here and this is gonna give me some contrast and refraction in the liquid
this is the light that travels through the glass and reflects into the liquid
and we get a little bit of fuzziness here and I'm adding this all over the
place just to kind of blend out any black so we don't get any things that's
too harsh to show again the refraction of the light and the environment into
the glass and into the liquid I do some cleanup here with my eraser assign my
name at the bottom and we take it into Photoshop and adjust the levels select
the white and the background so we get a nice white and we're going to come in
and just do some basic cleanup and straighten out the image here it needs
to be rotated very slightly to the counterclockwise direction to make
things square because it didn't say get scanned straight then we're just
cleaning up stuff at the bottom again we got that black line at the bottom it
helps anchor the image to the page super important so that it's not just floating
off in space we know exactly that this thing sits flat on a table and doesn't
float or have some alien technology that allows it to float it's anchored on a
table I'm using the curves tool here to makes just some general overall
adjustments to the color and the contrast and we're pretty much done at
this point just little specks here and there that I'm cleaning up we get this
really nice image of this cologne bottle if there's enough interest I'll do the
blueberry soda bottle in another video don't forget to follow me on Instagram
