So the first thing I want to show you is an introductory activity. An icebreaker,

actually, that was developed by my colleague Ana Cortesio at Laney College.

And I've expanded on it a little bit so let me show you how it works. This

activity takes place in a discussion forum in Canvas and it has two parts. So

for the first part, students are asked to open up a class map that I've created in

Google Maps and I've asked them to locate their hometowns, place a pin on

their town, and then write something special or unique about where they come

from. And also add an image or a video as well. So here you'll see that our map is

embedded into the discussion forum. However, we can't actually edit here. This

is view only mode so for them to be able to edit they'll click this link here or they can also click this box that says "View larger map" and it will open up our

map in a new window. They'll click Edit and you'll see already that there's a

list of students with their hometowns mentioned. And so they will scroll, they

will zoom in until they find their hometown. They'll click the pin button

here and that will open up a box for them to type into. So they'll write their

name, their hometown, something special about where they're from or something

they want the class to know about where they come from. And then they'll include

an image or a video and upload that. So I'll show you what it looks like.

So if they click on the pins then it'll open up and you'll have to move the map

a little bit. So open up the description of the hometown along with the picture

and you'll see that some students have included a few photos. And now I'll show

you what part 2 involves. So once students place their pin on the map it

will automatically show up in our embedded version here in the discussion

forum. And part 2 ask them to travel the world to scan the map and read all of

the different pins to learn about where their classmates come from. And you'll

see that we have a very diverse class. This is a English to Speakers of Other

Language so students do come from all over the world. And after they take a

tour, I want them to find any similarities or comment on whether or

not they've been to each others home towns or maybe they have some questions

about what their classmates talked about in their descriptions. I want them to

share what they found most interesting and kind of start connecting. And to do

that they will then click reply here and post to the discussion. So you asked me

to comment on why icebreakers are important and this particular icebreaker,

I think, really helps students to create connections to get to know one another

at the onset of the course and feel more comfortable learning together. And I

think this one's also fun because it allows them to experiment with the

technology. They're probably familiar with Google Maps but in a new innovative

capacity. I think this is also an equity-minded activity because it shows that

the instructor really values each and everyone's unique lived experiences and

also encourages other students to do the same. So it levels the playing fields at

the beginning of the class.

Judge Attempts To Limit Evidence Surrounding Roundup Dangers - Duration: 5:21.

The Bayer Corporation is trying to limit the types of evidence that can be used against

them in court as their recent purchase of Monsanto has put them on the hook for Roundup

trials and verdicts.

Farron, this couldn't happen to a better company could it?

To put Bayer on the hook for all the misconduct of Monsanto.

It's not, not like Bayer doesn't have problems themselves.

Look, you know, I got to tell you what bothers me about this, this case and then what's happening

in California is you have this judge.

You, the first thing you have to look at in how a case is doing is first of all, look

at the judge.

Now, this is a judge, you've done some background on him.

You know, you'd think, okay, he's in a, he's a, he's an Obama appointment.

He certainly has to be there for the little guy.

He's not.

You know, he's a corporate, he comes through the corporate structure of Covington & Burling

and these rulings that he's making affects thousands of cases to where we can, these

people can actually get, they can get some justice against Monsanto and Bayer.

What is your take on this?

Well, you know, this judge, Vince Chhabria, completely predictable.

Like you said, Covington & Burling, worked for corporations as their lawyer representing

them.

So what he's done here is a couple of weeks ago he said, okay, Bayer, Monsanto, whatever

you want to call yourselves in court, you don't want the plaintiffs to be able to bring

in evidence showing that you tried to mislead the public.

What you want me to do is basically break the trial into two separate phases.

Phase one did you cause the cancer?

Phase two, did you cover it up?

See Bayer and Monsanto only wanted to do phase one.

So Chhabria finally did come out this past Monday and said, all right, I'm going to allow

some of the evidence of your cover up in public deception, which it means nothing.

It means absolutely...

Look, I have, full disclosure, I'm handling Roundup cases in, in St Louis.

I chose not to go to California to be in front of this judge because I was afraid of these

very kinds of rulings.

You see a federal judge can give you little bits and pieces to make it sound like they're

being overly fair to one side or the other, but the truth is, first of all, a bifurcated

trial, let me, you have to understand, you're first trying the issue of is this person have

a disease relating to this product, right?

You're you're trying that first, and then you're going back and looking at, well, how

bad was the company's conduct?

Are there documents there that shed light on the probability that this person has this

illness?

company Monsanto and now Bayer go about trying to pay off scientists to get them to write

So isn't that probative in of itself?

The very fact that the company is going out trying to hire what we call biostitutes, these

are these scientists that will say anything for the right amount of money.

From an evidentiary standpoint, it's probative on its face that whatever the mental process

is of Monsanto, they have to go out and hire people to say something contrary that nobody

else will say and then pay them big money.

That's probative of the, of the existence of the, of their knowledge, that yes, this

cancer, this person has probably is related to our product.

I mean, what am I missing here?

What is this judge missing?

And the real thing that drives me nuts is every time you go, well, it was a democratic

appointment, they must be great.

No, it doesn't work like that because the democratic appointments are just as bad as

the Republican appointments.

Most of the time the democratic establishment appointments are usually judges like this

who've come up through the system.

You know, they've come up through the system, they've worked for corporations, they've been

paid by corporations, they have little or no, nothing in common with the average American

that's been injured by a product like this.

Right, and part of the problem here too is that this judge Chhabria has 680 Monsanto

cases in front of him.

So he's got 680 ahead of him.

New Traveler's Notebook Cover and iPad Lettering Update! | @laurenfairwx - Duration: 4:32.

Good morning and welcome to my monthly update for January. As you can probably

tell from my voice, I've been a bit under the weather lately, but I have a

couple things I wanted to share with you so hopefully that's okay. First, I have

not had a chance to make a full video about this yet, but I wanted to show you

very quickly, my new traveler's notebook. I've been doing a couple of detailed

traveler's notebook reviews lately, and so I definitely want to make one for

this, but I have had my eye on the deluxe Chic Sparrow covers for a long time now.

It's from their Mockingbird series and the color is Blue Jay. This was very

kindly sent to me by the folks at jetpens and I am completely in love with

it. It has good pockets, I just wanted to show it to you since it's probably gonna

be a little while before I have a chance to do a full setup video and a review

for it and so yeah. So the last time I updated you, I had just bought my iPad

pro and Apple pencil that I got from the VidCon grant, and I got a case for it,

which I really like. This is one of the few cases I've been able to find so far

that has a cutout on the side for the magnetic charging for the pencil. I

really like it, I feel like it makes it look like a fancy notebook, it has an

elastic thing that holds it shut, there's a pocket on the front, and one thing that

I do like about it is that if I'm not charging the pencil I can stick it right

here on this little elastic pen loop. But one of the things that I've started

making with this are handwritten Instagram stories. I did a Q&A where

people asked me questions and I wrote my answers out, and last week I asked for

suggestions for quotes and phrases that I could write out and so I was writing

out a bunch of the quotes and things that people were sending to me and

posting them in my Instagram stories. I've been kind of throwing these

together on the quicker side to kind of combat my need to have everything be

perfect and I've been really happy with the way that they're coming out, even

though they're not super polished. And I'm hoping to continue doing this sort
