This video explains about NASA's
newest
planet discovery of Kepler-90i
using Artificial Intelligence.
This new exoplanet Kepler-90i was
discovered by NASA in December 2017
as the 8th planet of Kepler-90
planetary system.
An exoplanet is a planet which orbits
a star, but it does not belong to our solar system.
With this discovery, Kepler-90 planetary
system is equal with our solar system
as both of them having the equal number of planets
around a single star.
Accoring to NASA, our solar system and
Kepler-90 planetary system have the
highest number of plannets around a single star.
The distance
to
Kepler90 star is
2,545 light-years from Earth.
Kepler-90i is a too hot, rocky planet
which orbits its star Kepler-90,
once every 14.4 days.
The average surface temperature of 800 °F
suggests it is impossible to find a life form there.
All Kepler-90 planets orbit close to
their star than earth orbits sun.
This planet discovery was made by applying
Google machine learning and signal data from NASA's
Kepler Space Telescope.
Machine learning is a form of Artifical Intelligence,
where machines learn and adapt through experience.
The transit method was used to discover this
new Kepler planet.
This technique detects distant planets by
monitoring the brightness of many stars to look for
perioic dimming of a star.
Orbiting planet passes between its star
and the Earth is the reason for this dimming phenomenon.
The researchers Christopher Shallue and Andrew Vanderburg
trained an Artificial Neural Network.
Artificial Neural Network is a machine learning technique
which act like a human brain.
This network is used to identify
transiting exoplanets by feeding the light readings of
Kepler telescope.
First, they fed neural network with train data set of
15,000 previously-verified Kepler signals.
For the test set, the neural network has
successfully identified true planets.
Then, this well-trained neural network is directed
to feed weaker signals in 670 star systems
with known multiple planets.
Suprisingly, they discovered Kepler-90i as
a result
In addition to Kepler-90i, this neural network
has dicovered a sixth planet in the
Kepler-80 system. It is the Earth-sized Kepler-80g.
