India's muted response to Donald Trump's Jerusalem move stokes Arab unease - Trump News
A dozen Arab ambassadors have asked India to clarify its position on the U.S recognition
of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, diplomatic sources said, after New Delhi's muted response
suggested a shift in support for the Palestinian cause.
U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly reversed decades of U.S. policy this month when he
recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, generating outrage from Palestinians.
Trump also plans to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.
Countries around the world, including U.S. allies Britain and France, criticized Trump's
decision, but India did not take sides.
Instead, the Indian foreign ministry in a brief statement, said India's position was
consistent and independent of any third party.
The bland statement made no reference to Jerusalem and prompted criticism at home that it was
insufficient, vague and anti-Palestinian.
Israel maintains that all of Jerusalem is its capital.
Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of a future independent state and say Trump's
move has left them marginalized and jeopardized any hopes of a two-state solution.
Last week, envoys from Arab states including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Kuwait based in New
Delhi met Indian junior foreign minister M.J. Akbar to brief the government about an Arab
League meeting on Dec. 9 condemning the U.S. decision, a diplomatic and an Indian government
source said.
The envoys also sought a more forthright Indian response, the sources said.
But Akbar gave no assurance and the Indian source said the government had no plans for
a further articulation on Jerusalem, which is at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict.
"Akbar did not promise anything," the diplomatic source briefed on the meeting said,
speaking on the condition of anonymity because of diplomatic sensitivities.
India was one of the earliest and vocal champions of the Palestinian cause during the days it
was leading the Non-Aligned Movement while it quietly pursued ties with Israel.
But under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, New Delhi has moved to a more open relationship
with Israel, lifting the curtain on thriving military ties and also homeland security cooperation.
Modi's Hindu nationalist ruling group views Israel and India as bound together in a common
fight against Islamist militancy and long called for a public embrace of Israel.
Modi in July made a first trip to Israel by an Indian prime minister and did not go to
Ramallah, the headquarters of the Palestinian Authority and a customary stop for leaders
trying to maintain a balance in political ties.
P.R. Kumaraswamy, a leading Indian expert on ties with Israel at New Delhi's Jawaharlal
Nehru University, said a "major shift" on India's policy had been evident since
early this year when Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas visited New Delhi.

The Carolina Panthers had a lot going on in addition to a football game on Sunday.
The team announced on Friday that it had hired a law firm to investigate accusations of workplace
misconduct by owner Jerry Richardson.
The NFL then took over the investigation from the team, and on Sunday morning, Sports Illustrated
reported the team had reached monetary settlements with at least four former female employees.
After Sunday's game, the 81-year-old team owner announced he plans to sell the team
after the season.
On the field, the Panthers had to deal with the return of two-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers.
The Green Bay quarterback had missed the previous six games because of a broken collarbone,
but came back with a chance to salvage the Packers' playoff chances.
But the quarterback of the game was Cam Newton, who threw four touchdown passes in the Panthers'
31-24 victory over Green Bay.
Newton completed 20-of-31 passes for 242 yards with no interceptions.
"We've been weathering the storm, not letting the minutia of the media kind of affect and
alter our focus," Newton said.
"We control the narrative, as Coach always says, if we go out and do our job.
Be professionals about it.
Understand what your No. 1 priority is and everything else falls second, third and fourth.
We still want to keep that professional approach to it, but keep moving forward."
The game was the fourth of Newton's NFL career in which he threw at least four TD passes
with no interceptions.
The first two came in 2015, when he was the NFL MVP, and the other came on Nov. 13 in
Carolina's 45-21 victory over the Miami Dolphins.
Green Bay led 14-10 at halftime.
Newton put the Panthers in front on a 30-yard touchdown pass to tight end Greg Olsen with
11:34 left in the third quarter.
Newton threw two more TD passes to wide receiver Damiere Byrd to keep the Panthers in front.
Newton also ran for 58 yards on 14 carries against the Packers.
That boosted Newton's rushing yardage for 2017 to 643.
He joined Michael Vick as the only NFL quarterbacks with four seasons of at least 600 rushing
yards.
Newton had 706 rushing yards in 2011, 741 in 2012 and 636 in 2015.
The victory boosted Carolina's record to 10-4.
The Panthers are tied for the top spot in the NFC South with New Orleans with two games
remaining in the regular season, but the Saints swept the season series with Carolina.
Newton was among the 21 former Auburn players who got on the field during the 15th Sunday
of the NFL's 2017 season.

Resolving North Korea nuclear issue peacefully is most urgent diplomatic challenge: FM Kang - Duration: 2:34.
Foreign minister Kang Kyung-wha described the North Korea nuclear situation as the most
urgent diplomatic challenge for the nation on Monday.
Speaking at a rare meeting of South Korea's overseas mission chiefs, Kang stressed cooperation
with the international community was key in this endeavor.
Kwon Jang-ho has this report.
Addressing a crowd of 182 South Korean ambassadors and consulate generals from 163 overseas missions,
foreign minister Kang Kyung-wha, said resolving the North Korea nuclear issue peacefully is
the most urgent diplomatic challenge.
She stressed the importance of working closely with the international community,... especially
with South Korea's four key partners, the U.S., China, Russia and Japan.
However, Kang also said that South Korea remains pro-active in finding its own path towards
a peaceful resolution.
(Korean) "At the same time, we are finding our own
diplomatic space and are pursuing a range of measures to draw North Korea out for talks.
We will continue to make persistent efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the North
Korea nuclear issue."
Kang reiterated Seoul's plans to reach out to other non-traditional partners, such as
through the 'New Northern Policy' and 'New Southern Policy', announced by President Moon
earlier this year, to help tackle North Korea... as well as build a future of, quote, 'mutual
prosperity'.
(Korean) "Finding a peaceful resolution to the North
Korea situation, cooperating with the four key partners, and expanding our diplomatic
reach has a direct connection to our national interest."
Kang's speech was part of a 5-day meeting for the mission heads, where they will be
briefed on the administration's policy direction and discuss how to achieve their diplomatic
aims.
They will also carry out some volunteer work and visit the venues for 2018 PyeongChang
Winter Olympics,... the promotion of which is a key objective in the coming months.
It's the first meeting of its kind since President Moon Jae-in took office in May, and he will
be hosting dinner for all 182 diplomats at the
Blue House later on Monday... before the diplomats return to their diplomatic missions around
the world next week.
