Happy birthday Bayonetta!
No, really, Bayonetta was born today, December 19th, 1411 so she's looking pretty good
for being over 600 years old.
Of course, December 19th is also the birthday of her creator, Hideki Kamiya, making today
a bit of a special occasion.
And to celebrate, we wanted to take a slightly deeper look at Bayonetta 3.
Now we already did an in-depth analysis of the Bayonetta 3 teaser itself so make sure
to check that out if you haven't already.
So to kick the festivities off, let's revisit the birth of the series itself, and take a
quick look back at the teaser trailer for the original Bayonetta that started it all.
Pretty similar to Bayonetta 3, isn't it?
Now let's continue right into the teaser for Bayonetta 2.
Interesting...and let's take one more look at the one for 3.
So not only are all 3 teasers pretty similar, but watching them back to back like this shows
a clear evolution thematically.
In the first one, Bayonetta's the one decimating the Angels with no issues whatsoever.
But in Bayonetta 2, she's shown to be on equal footing with Balder in his masked form.
And by Bayonetta 3, well, she's getting the crap kicked out her and literally falling
to pieces by the end.
No really, you can see her legs fall in different directions indicating that she was either
split in half or destroyed entirely leaving only what we see remaining.
Remember, her clothes are actually made of her hair.
Based on this seemingly gruesome end, many have wondered if Bayonetta 3 might feature
a new protagonist.
And as it turns out, there's possibly even more evidence to support this idea.
Because back in May, Source Gaming had the chance to interview Atsushi Inaba of Platinum
Games, and they asked him If Bayonetta 3 were to ever happen, would Bayonetta still be the
protagonist or would he try to surprise fans?
And his answer was pretty interesting.
Because he immediately mentioned the possibility of a male Bayonetta, but laughed afterwards
making it pretty clear he was joking...but we can't help but wonder, was he?
At the very least, he makes it clear they have definitely been considering the idea
of a new protagonist for Bayonetta 3.
Atsushi stated that...
"There's plenty of precedent for changing protagonists, and so that is something we
discuss – do we want to keep the same one, have a different one, add new ones – but
that's certainly not anything I can say for sure at this point."
Making it even trickier to tell is the fact that the rest of his answer rings true and
even indicated that they were preparing for a Bayonetta 3, or at least ideas for a sequel.
Which, of course, we now know is officially a thing.
So between this interview and the tantalizing suggestion at the end of the Bayonetta 3 teaser,
it seems we very well may be looking at playing as someone else in the next game.
So will a new character actually take over?
Could it be split between Bayonetta and another character from the series like Jeanne?
It's not impossible since the past games have featured her, Rodin, and even Balder
as playable characters in extra modes.
This doesn't answer the question of whether a new male character named Bayonetta will
appear though.
The series loves time travel so maybe her son from the future?
Or perhaps someone wishing to carry on her legacy?
That is, of course, if she really is dead.
It's impossible to tell what direction Platinum will go, but it's those very possibilities
that excite us.
There is one other small thing that caught our eye during the comparison though, Bayonetta's
legs.
In Bayonetta, the shot finishes on her left leg.
In Bayonetta 2, it's on her right leg.
And in Bayonetta 3, it's in the center.
We have no idea what the significance of this could be, but it is a fascinating detail.
But what do you guys think?
Could Bayonetta 3 feature a new protagonist, let alone a male one?
And will Bayonetta really die?
