What's up guys, Frazier here for Complex with some bad news.
This outcome has been a possibility for awhile now, but today it became official: the final
season of Game of Thrones, will not air until 2019.
The confirmation comes courtesy of Sansa Stark herself, Sophie Turner.
In a new interview with Variety discussing her career plans for life-after-Thrones, Turner
casually reveals season 8 is set for 2019 while listing off her release schedule.
For what it's worth HBO hasn't actually said anything concrete but, let's be real...Turner
probably knows what's up.
If anything her slip will just force HBO's hand to confirm it.
This definitely sucks, but the writing was on the wall.
Thrones only just started filming season 8 in October, and in the same interview Turner
estimates they have at least six more months left.
Add in all the special effects and other time consuming post-production flourishes each
episode needs, and there's really no way the show could realistically meet a 2018 release
date.
There are ice dragons in play now, after all.
Making that shit look cool takes time.
A twelve-month minimum wait isn't ideal but at least season 8 is shaping up to be
worthy of the long wait.
The season will only be six episodes but showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff have hinted at
each ep being super-sized in length, maybe even 80 minutes.
Here's what Turner was able to tease about Sansa's arc.
"This season, there's a new threat, and all of a sudden she finds herself somewhat
back in the deep end.
And without Littlefinger, it's a test for her of whether she can get through it.
This season is more a passionate fight for her than a political, manipulative kind of
fight."
When we last left Sansa, she skirted every fan's fears that she'd kill her sister
Arya and instead teamed up with her to take out master schemer and all-around fuckboy
Littlefinger.
Meanwhile her brother Jon just pledged the family's loyalty to his new boo slash unbeknownst
aunt Daenerys.
And ice zombies are on the way.
So, yea, there's gonna be a lot going on next season.
2019 can't come soon enough.
Hopefully by the time Thrones premieres we'll at least have a new president.
Meanwhile you can catch Turner on the cover of EW previewing her role as the titular Dark
PHoenix in the hotly anticipated new X-Men film, due next November.
