Google: Duplex phone calling AI will identify itself

Youll know if youre talking to AI -- we think.After an impressive Google I/O demo where its Duplex AI system called a restaurant and salon to set up appointments, one of the big questions concerned the ethics of the technology.

The Google Assistant voice took steps to pretend to be human, inserting umms and ahs into the conversation while a person on the other end appeared to be unaware that they were talking to a program.

As a Turing Test candidate, it was impressive, but wed like to know if the person who just called us has a heartbeat and a favorite One Direction member.

In a statement, a Google spokesperson said transparency is a key part of the technology and: We are designing this feature with disclosure built-in, and well make sure the system is appropriately identified.

Well see what that looks like when the Duplex technology rolls out in testing as a part of Google Assistant this summer.

Singapore hosting first-ever N. Korea-U.S. summit -- why Singapore? - Duration: 2:02.

Switzerland,... Mongolia,... the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom and even the North

Korean capital Pyongyang.

Various locations around the world that were considered as plausible locations for the

first-ever summit between North Korea and the United States.

But finally, after weeks of waitings, President Trump announced Singapore was chosen over

the other options.

Our Oh Jung-hee sheds light on the reasons why.

Out of several candidate locations, it's finally down to one: Singapore.

What makes Singapore a favorable location for both Pyongyang and Washington is that

the Southeast Asian country is diplomatically neutral.

It has good relations with North Korea and the U.S., and both countries have embassies

there.

Before international sanctions took full effect early last year,... Singapore had been at

the center of North Korea's overseas economic activities.

But at the same time, it is also home to a U.S. naval base,... where American ships and

aircraft make regular visits... and several are stationed.

Singapore is also close enough to North Korea for the regime's planes to make a non-stop

flight.

And the country is well-practiced in hosting international events,... with the Asia Security

Summit Shangri-La Dialogue taking place every year.

The U.S. actually preferred Singapore more than North Korea did, due to Singapore's security

and infrastructure... as well as the political burden that would follow if the summit were

held at Panmunjom or Pyongyang.

And as North Korea has close relations with Singapore,... it seems that Pyongyang chose

not to drag on with a tug-of-war over the summit location but jump into the real business

of the talks.

Singapore's foreign ministry welcomed the decision, saying the country is pleased to

host the summit talks between President Trump and North Korea's Kim.

It added the country hopes the summit serves to (quote)"advance prospects for peace" on

the Korean Peninsula.

U.S. Treasury, UAE sanction Iranian currency network connected to Iran's Revolutionary Guard - Duration: 1:34.

It was just two days ago when President Trump announced he was withdrawing the U.S. from

the 2015 Iran nuclear deal,... and now the administration has imposed new sanctions on

Iran.

These measures are focused on currency exchanges -- individuals and companies suspected of

funneling large sums of money to Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

The United States has imposed its first sanctions on nine Iranian individuals and entities,...

just days after President Trump's announcement to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced Thursday that it took joint action with the United

Arab Emirates against six individuals and three companies,... to "disrupt an extensive

currency exchange network" that has funneled millions of U.S. dollars to the Iranian Revolutionary

Guard's elite Qods Force-- a group designated by Washington as a supporter of terrorism

since 2007.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin gave a statement,... accusing the Iranian regime and its Central

Bank of helping the group access U.S. dollars to use for malign activities such as funding

and arming its regional proxy groups.

He called for the international community's joint efforts to combat Iran's efforts to

fund what he called "the world's largest state sponsor of terror."

The UAE government has also announced that it will impose sanctions against 9 Iranian

individuals and entities.

It did not specify the targets, but American media have reported that they are likely to

be the same entities that the U.S. has targeted.

Will there be chemistry between Kim and Trump at summit in Singapore? - Duration: 2:26.

Between now and the summit next month, it's expected that at least the broad outlines

of a deal will be put together by officials in Pyongyang and Washington.

But the question is -- a deal on what scale... and will it lead to the North's complete denuclearization.

Some of that could be left until President Trump and Kim Jong-un actually meet.

Both are leaders with distinctive styles, so will they get along?

Our Lee Ji-won takes a closer look.

Two very different yet similar leaders of decades-long adversaries are set to have their

historic first meeting next month.

The two leaders aren't even of the same generation.

U.S. President Donald Trump is more than twice the age of Kim Jong-un.

They also rose to power in contrasting ways.

While Trump is a businessman turned politician who climbed his way up to the nation's top

seat, Kim was born into the regime's ruling family,... who have been passing down the

crown for three generations.

But the two also share similar backgrounds like being born into rich families, and having

international levels of education.

Whether there's a spark between the two leaders could be crucial in the upcoming North Korea-U.S.

summit, as Trump has emphasized the chemistry between him and his counterparts when meeting

other world leaders.

But the two leaders share two major characteristics,... 'unpredictability' and 'boldness in making

game changing bets'.

Some observers say these characteristics are what helped Trump win his presidency.

He bravely jumped into the world of politics, and changed the game with never-before-seen

moves and pledges.

Kim also showed these characteristics, when he made a series of bold moves to open up

his regime after his New Year's address.

His offer to South Korean President Moon Jae-in to cross over to the North for a few seconds

when they met at the military demarcation line at the beginning of the inter-Korean

summit also surprised many.

It is this unpredictability and boldness that enabled the Pyongyang-Washington summit,...

as it was unimaginable just a few months ago, with the two leaders having exchanged harsh

rhetoric last year.

Amid cautious optimism,... observers are keen to see if these bold, unpredictable moves

can spark chemistry between the two leaders, and result in a complete denuclearization

deal.

the day, we have Professor Shin Sang-hyup from Kyunghee University here in the studio

with us.

Professor Shin, thank you for joining us.

My pleasure.

1 - So in the report we just played there, we looked into the details of why Singapore

was chosen as the location for this important meeting.

Our reporter Oh Junghee explained that Singapore is a neutral country, with diplomatic relations

with both North Korea and the U.S., it's close enough for Kim Jong-un to fly to directly,

and it has the infrastructure to support this kind of major international event.

How do you rate the choice?

2 - Are there any disadvantages of it being held in Singapore?

Do you think there might be any security concerns?

3 - The date is set for June 12th.

That's just over a month from now.

Is that enough time to get all details for the negotiations in place?

And can we expect a deal on denuclearization?

4 - Of course, we will keep watch over all the developments leading up to the summit

over the next few weeks.

Now professor, I want to move on to another topic to discuss with you today.

And that's the U.S.-China trade talks.

Last week in Beijing, we had the first round of talks, but that ended without much progress.

This has sparked concerns that a trade war is inevitable.

First can you explain to our viewers what this trade dispute is about and what the two

sides want from each other

5 - Beijing's commerce ministry gave a very bullish statement this week, saying that it

has no intention of changing its stance.

Washington has also said there is still a big gap in their positions, but added that

there is hope for progress.

Even if a perfect deal cannot be met, can at least the differences be narrowed to avoid

a trade war?

6 - Next week, it's the second round of talks, and it's the Beijing officials' turn to go

to Washington.

Do you think something substantial could come out of that, or will there have

to be further rounds of talks?

7 - Amid all these trade talks, the situation with North Korea continues to develop as well.

Trump in the past had openly suggested that if China helped deal with North Korea, he

might be more willing to make concessions on trade.

Now that was quite a while back, and

things have changed somewhat since then, but could the North Korea factor play a role in

the trade talks?

8 - If trade talks do not go China's way, could Beijing influence Kim Jong-un to be

more difficult with Trump?

9 - The U.S. and China are South Korea's biggest trading partners, and so anything that happens

between them will likely have an impact on South Korea as well.

What would a trade war between those two superpowers mean

for Korea?

Korean businesses to invest up to US$150 bil. in new industries by 2022 - Duration: 1:34.

The South Korean government is joining hands with some of the country's biggest businesses...

to make sure the local economy stays on the cutting edge of industry.

Technology is changing fast, so the government is going to invest tens of billions of dollars

into next-generation tech... like the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Kim Hyesung reports.

The Korean government will work with local companies to sharpen the country's edge in

future industries.

Seoul's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced its new industry development plan

on Friday with businesses in the private sector.

Dubbed the "Industry Innovation 2020 Platform," Korean businesses will invest up to 150 billion

U.S. dollars over the next five years in new industries like driverless cars, renewable

energy and the Internet of Things.

The ministry said it expects the massive cash injection to create around 200-thousand new

jobs by 2022, and about 27-thousand jobs this year alone.

It will support the plan by nurturing talent and easing regulations to allow businesses

to test their products and services.

The goal is to create more innovative products and enhance competitiveness in five major

industries, including electric and driverless cars, IoT-based home appliances, semiconductors

and displays, renewable energy and biotech.

The ministry said it will increase the percentage of R&D investment on these industries from

the current 30 percent to 50 percent by 2022 and improve Korea's intellectual property

related laws.
