Hello everyone. Thanks for tuning in again. I have a number of new Google Home
and Google Assistant features and products to talk to you about this week.
Let's get right into them right after this
First thing's first. Now Amazon Alexa or the Alexa-enabled assistant has been
ahead of Google in terms of the payments functionality, and Google is trying to
play a little bit of catch-up here. So they've gone ahead and they've updated
Google Assistant to accept payment methods in six different countries.
We already have payments in the US but now we're capable of adding a payment
style or a payment information if you're in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan,
and the UK. Next up is something that Google is playing catch-up with again.
The Google assistant applications or set of skills...whatever we want to call them
today, they haven't had a real robust review system, and Google has gone ahead
and updated that with the capability of adding reviews. Now there's been some
functionality here and there in that system, but we're now seeing the ability
to go ahead, edit reviews, review actions, specific actions, and the system is only
improving. Alright, so something else Google is doing, and I think this is
interesting for those of you with a bit of a technical background like myself. If
you've been interested in some of the functionality of Google Assistant and
you think you have what it takes to, either give Google an idea, or create a
product or a system to utilize Google Assistant and improve its features or
capability or integrated with something else.
So if you have any of those sorts of ideas, there's now a program available
for you to apply to. Within that program, you're going to be able to get
investment funds, guidance from Google engineers, early access to Google's
features and tools, and you even get a little bit of promotion, and
then of course access to the Google cloud platform, which is actually a
pretty big benefit for those of you who are actually going to go and develop a
product. So I think the point of this is, when we're talking about the massive
amount of Alexa based skills that are out there, and the amount that Amazon is
putting into their developers program, on that side, this really is a second
or a third component of Google going out and getting developers on board. And
working with little companies, or little startups, and helping them through the
process of creating something that works with the Google Assistant. Switching over
to something a little more fun. Star Wars day was May the 4th and and of
course all of you are gonna post below May the 4th be with you, but
Google has tried a number of times to
catch on to these events, or these days, and they've done the same thing with the
May the 4th here. So what's interesting is I'm actually talking to
you on May the 5th, and you're watching this video at least on May the 6th, or
after, and Google has left some of this interesting new functionality, or this
fun functionality, in the Google Home. So I'm going to show you a quick demo here.
Who shot first? "Han Solo."
"...OK I just watched the video again and now I'm
thinking Greedo."
"All right here we go, I've now watched the video 15 times and
I can say for sure that Chewbacca was not in that scene and I am therefore not interested."
Speak like Yoda.
"This moment waiting for I have been you, I think so."
There you go, we're here on May the 5th and Google Assistant, I think that's
pretty fun, I don't mind that kind of functionality
at all. Skipping over to the product side of things. If you're someone who has an
Android watch and it has the Wear OS, and we know a number of devices just got an
update, from Google up to Wear OS. If you have one of those
watches, you're now getting improved functionality from Google Assistant. So
you're going to be able to communicate, and the Google assistant will
communicate back to you. If your watch has a speaker, you'll actually be able to
hear it there. If not, the Bluetooth headphone capability will actually bring
the the message directly to your ears through your Bluetooth headphones. So
lots of new functionality coming for those of you with a Wear OS device.
Probably my favorite new feature this week comes to us directly from Google.
They're trying to promote some of the capabilities within the Google Play
Store and Google Play Books. This has been something that I don't think is overly
utilized by the public. I think on the flip side, Amazon has quite the
book service, and they announced that Audible book service, so Google has gone
ahead and they basically released the capability for Google to read you a book.
Now we had that functionality a few weeks ago here on the channel, and I told
you about that and you know it was more based on which books you have. Something
for kids though this week, and I really like this functionality, is you could
just ask for a classic story. I'm going to show you in a second how that
works. You just get a classic story at night, say read to your child by the
Google Assistant or the recording they have for that
classical story. So here's the demo. Let me show you real quick. We'll come right
back. Tell me a story.
"Okay, this one's called Little Red Riding Hood and it's
from story nori on Google Play Books. Little Red Riding Hood - Once upon a time
there lived a little country girl. The prettiest little girl
who's ever been seen. How did little red riding-hood..." The last thing
to talk to you about this week: Xiaomi Aqara, I talked about that earlier in the
week with the new Home Automation or new Smart Home products and features video.
What I want to tell you, for those of you with a Google Home you're going to
be able to control those products with your Google Home or Google Assistant by
the end of 2018. So that's been announced by the company. They have a smart home
light bulb, they have a number of other smart home devices, so you're going to be
able to buy those from this Chinese manufacturer, who is really trying to
ramp up their smart home game. So there you have it one last thing to tell you
guys about. I'm gonna show you at the end of the video.
Dana B is the winner of our Google Home Mini giveaway. Of course I can't give you all of
her information, but I'm going to show you the draw here right now. Alright, so you
can clearly see we had three thousand seven hundred and eight entries into our
contest, which is great. I love to see that you guys were really engaged in
this giveaway, and I'm happy to give away the Google Home Mini. So I'm going to go
ahead and click draw winners. I only have one winner for this contest, and we're going to
do more of course as we go. I'm gonna hit draw and you're going to see Dana's name
show up here. She's the winner! I've reached out to her. So there you have it
if you're Dana, and you're watching here today, make sure you reach out to me I've
already emailed you and you just have to email me back and let me know where I'm
supposed to send this thing. So anyways everyone, thanks for watching again. We will
see you next time here on the channel with more new home automation
features and new home automation products related to Google Home and the
Google Assistant next week. Thanks for watching, we'll see you next time.
