Hi, it's Jen with lavenderandlatte.com and today I want to talk about what are
essential oils anyway, do they work and how we can use them. When I first got
started it was after I'd already started
ditching chemicals in my home I'd already swapped over a lot of my
traditional more toxic cleaning products over to DIY or plant-based things
and I remember we had conversation with
my friends and they were saying how they didn't trust that a house is clean
unless it smelled like pine-sol or chemicals and that horrified me because
I had already spent years using plant-based and DIY cleaning products
and I was worried that my when my friends came over they thought my house
smelled bad or really that... not that it smelled bad necessarily but that
it wasn't clean um you know it looked clean but you know, I mean it just made
me really self-conscious so I can't tolerate fragrant candles or plugins or
things like that without getting a migraine,
dizziness, feeling nauseous, things like that, that wasn't an option so I was
looking up natural ways that I could scent my house and started doing all this
research or just googling natural scents and came across essential
oils well in that process I also learned that, you know... I used to have
like a little burner that you could candle underneath and you put the essential
oils on top well I learned that that could actually damage the therapeutic
properties of the oil. I'm like, well aren't they just first scent like I
didn't really understand... I was huge skeptic that
they were actually therapeutic so I continued to do a little bit of research. I
kind of went down a rabbit hole with that and I was pretty astonished at what I found.
I ended up on PubMed.gov looking up you know all kinds of things and I do
recommend that you do your own research but I was pretty astonishing with what I
was finding and so it just led me down this path and I learned about cold
diffusion and electric diffusers and how those worked and how
they didn't heat the water, heat the oils, and so they wouldn't damage them.
So I ended up getting, after months of research because I was really reluctant
to join an MLM company... ummm, I was not a fan of
them at the time but here I am. But I was reluctant to join an MLM and Young Living, I looked
all the different brands and I did my research and I finally decided on Young
Living because the bottom line to me was their transparency not only did they tell
you where their farms were, they actually invited their members to come
and help plant and harvest and all that so you can see that there was no
pesticides used on the plants, they have their proprietary seed to seal process.
They're very particular about the seeds that they use, the land that they
plant on has to be virgin land and have not been planted on in 50 years.
No pesticides, so they're organic and had full transparency so I was still
skeptical and what they did to our bodies I was more just wanting scent but
I ended up purchasing a Premium Starter Kit with Young Living because it came with eleven
oils and you basically got a free cold diffuser in the process. I was
really excited and while I was waiting for my order to arrive I continued to
research and all the different things that they could do so when I actually
got my kit, I opened it and I dug right in. I actually used so many oils
in a day that I actually caused myself to have a detox reaction because yes
they do have therapeutic properties and I did actually... they naturally detox so
yeah when you start using essential oils I recommend that you start slow and it
doesn't take a lot you know one drop goes a long way so that's my story on how
I got started. I went from a huge skeptic - I have a science background, I actually
am a former engineer - and so for me it was like how I just didn't understand
how plant matter can make such a huge difference but I love my results and now
I haven't been able to shut up about them and that's why I'm making videos. So what
are essential oils anyway? They are basically most simply put, the life
essence of a plant. So they're highly concentrated aromatic
essences of trees, shrubs, herbs, grasses, resins, and flowers and so they're
greaseless they're volatile which means that they're not greasy like olive oil
or jojoba oil or coconut oil or anything like that it will actually evaporate
pretty easily essential oils give the plant their
natural defensive and protective mechanisms and they work the same way in
our bodies as they do in nature they penetrate cell membranes and disperse into
our blood and our tissues. One drop contains 40 million trillion molecules
that affect the body at a cellular level and yeah I am looking at my notes
because I love these numbers and I want to share them with you. These
particles are one of the few things that can actually cross the blood-brain
barrier. Their purpose is to help support our body systems by keeping our bodies clean
and our systems functioning as they should. On average each essential oil
contains over 100 medicinal compounds with more being discovered every day. The
key to producing therapeutic essential oils to use the lowest temperature and
pressure to protect these delicate compounds and so that's something to
consider when you're looking at brands. And each one of these compounds is
important so a lot of times when you buy an essential oil off the shelf you're likely
getting something that's full of synthetic fillers and they might take
one compound that they believe is most effective and use that one compound and
then fill it with synthetic fillers so... and actually by labeling law you only
have to have 15% of product (plant matter) in a bottle to call it a hundred percent pure
so be careful about what oils you're using and be sure to do your research
essential oils are primarily made by steam distillation, another common way is
you know for citrus fruits is to cold press from the rind (peel)which is great
because I learned that you know it's
because this essential oils not coming
from the acidic center of the fruit it doesn't hurt the enamel on your teeth to
put like a drop of lemon essential oil in your water. Lemon Vitality anyway. And
that might be something you guys are wondering like what's the
difference between Young Living's white labels and regular colored labels these are two
different oils one's lemon one is frankincense, but there is a yellow label for
Lemon as well and they're the same exact oil except the white label is labeled as a
supplement as part of our dietary line and is safe for internal use and the
colored labels are for aromatic and topical use. The same exact oil, it just
makes it clear on how they're supposed to be used, and it makes the FDA happy.
How do we use essential oils? There are three main ways. The first one being and
probably the most popular is aromatically so you know you can take...
I love frankincense, you can inhale directly from the bottle, you can place a drop
in your palm, or 2, and rub your palms together and cover them over your face or
another popular way is to... if you're trying to open up your nasal
passages you can put a couple of drops and a bottle in a bowl of warm (hot) water and
then put your face over it and cover your head with the towel and that's
called tenting. So you can use it that way, and we can also diffuse to
uplift our emotions and use them for spiritual and emotional purposes so
diffusing is a really popular way to use oils for emotional and spiritual support
um because your sense of smell is directly linked to your limbic system in
your brain. It brings up a lot of emotions and things. Like you
walk in your house, and it smells like cookies what kind of memories does that
bring back or you know the smell of cut grass... you know things like that will
bring back childhood memories so aromatic is the first way. Second way is
topically by placing a few drops in the desired area on your skin.
I like to apply oils directly over whatever area I'm working on because you
want them to go into that area and not get distracted by trying to go and work
on something else. So be sure that you follow the dilution recommendation
that's written on the bottle and you can dilute with any kind of carrier oil
such as... jojoba oil is one of my favorites because it's close to our
natural skin oil there's also coconut oil, olive oil, argan
oil, things like that. So those are considered carrier oils and they're
great for diluting. Another great way to use essential oils topically and
especially when you're doubting, you don't know what to do with them, is to apply
them to your feet. So the entire body... I don't know if
you've seen like a reflexology chart or like where all your nerve endings go in
your body but they're all connected and it's really kind of amazing how you have
these vita-flex points on your feet that are connected to different
organs in your body. It still kind of blows my mind every time I try it and it
works. But I will leave a link to an image of our vita-flex points on our feet
so that you can look that up if you want, in the description below. But basically
you can apply them on your feet if you're in doubt of where to go... I
usually either let it drop on my foot or I'll apply it, or I'll make a
roll-on or something like that and I'll put it on my feet and I'll rub my feet
together, just to cover my bases, I get everything covered. So when in doubt
I can tell people just to put it on their feet. A couple of things to
think about when you're using them topically... you can put essential oils
diluted anywhere on your body - and I mean anywhere - except that you want to make sure
you don't get them inside your ear canal or in your eyes, and yes I have
totally done that before where I use essential oil and then rub my eyes or
something got it in there I just grab what's closest. I'll grab like olive oil
even and just put it around and it'll immediately take the sting way. I've
basically washed my eye out with olive oil and it works and everything's fine so
try to avoid your eyes. Don't put them in your eyes and don't ever let
them get into your canal so when you want to apply something around your ear
I'll put it on a cotton ball and put it in my ear or I will dab it
around the outside of my ear and it works for me.
So the third and final way to use essential oils is internally and whether
or not... you have to do what you feel comfortable doing. Again, Young Living has these
white Vitality labels... it's our supplement line they're safe for
internal use. You can put a couple of drops in a capsule. You can get empty
veggie capsules from Young Living or you can get them on Amazon, or a health food store so
you put a couple of drops that... for whatever goal that you're working on
and then I recommend putting in also a carrier oil. So good ones to add are like
coconut oil or olive oil and what that does is it helps prevent the oily
burps. Like when I first start taking them internally in a capsule I didn't
know to do this and like, I felt like I had a forest coming out of my mouth! So
if you put carrier oil in your capsules that will prevent that from happening.
So the other way to do is just to place a drop in your water. I love adding
lemon or citrus fresh vitality in my water. Just a drop... I
usually do about a drop per 8 ounces, that's kind of a rule of thumb that I go
by, it seems to work for me and then you can also add you know one
or two drops to meals or recipes. Be careful when you're using them in
cooking just know that a lot of the herbal essential oils like basil and
thyme and oregano are very highly concentrated a little goes a long way so
when you're using those oils I recommend that you actually use a
toothpick and you put the toothpick through the center of the reducer
and then swirl it through your food and then you can build flavor that way but
generally one drop of essential oil is equivalent to about a teaspoon... of an
herb which... I kind of say that for like that's how I use a lemon and orange
and things like that but again the herbs like the oregano, thyme, basil those
I start with the less and build from there. So that's the three ways you can
use them. If you have any questions please let me know in the comments.
Please keep them FDA compliant. I cannot talk about illness, disease,
or anything like that. If I get comments like that asking those kind of questions
I have to delete them so help me out and keep it what we call above the Wellness
line if you haven't heard about that before basically they have a line and
anything above (I mean below) it would be illness or disease anything above it is anything
you know, healthy, well, and you know working toward optimal health so let's
keep it above the wellness line. Let me know if you have questions and thanks
for joining! Have a great day and I'll see you next time.
