Roon 1.6: Qobuz, improved Radio and new screens - Duration: 10:56.
The new features of Roon version 1.6 could be listed on less than one page.
You would then know the improvements but would you understand the impact of them?
The Roonlabs policy on updates has been the same
since the beginning: feature updates get a decimal increment in the version number, like
now from 1.5 to 1.6.
Bug fixes only get a higher build number, like version 1.5 build 328.
So version 1.6 must have new features and other goodies.
Roonlabs granted me a preview so that I could report on it directly after the release.
Roon already integrated the use of the Tidal streaming service and from now on the French
high-res streaming service Qobuz is integrated too.
People that have no hands-on experience using Roon will claim that about any streamer and
network player not only supports Roon and Tidal but also many more.
And they are right.
But supporting isn't integrating.
In any other application and streamer you have to go to - for instance - the Qobus environment
and browsing there won't show your own albums or albums from other streaming services.
In Roon if you go to David Bowie, your own albums are shown - and can be played directly
by just clicking - you are also informed that Tidal and Qobus also offer Bowie albums.
If I scroll down here, you see the albums on my hard-disk.
Then Bowies presence on compilations, appearances on albums by other artists and albums he produced
are shown, as was already in Roon for a long time.
Below that the albums available from Qobuz and Tidal are listed.
From here you can easily add it to the playlist or open it to start an individual track.
On the right of the track you can see that for instance Changes appears five times on
my hard disk wile Tidal has 26 versions and Qobuz 18.
A simple click shows these versions, split up between my library, Qobus and Tidal.
Like with an internet browser you can track back through the pages you already visited.
Let's go to David Live, an MQA album from Tidal.
But by clicking on versions you find that Qobus also offers one version in cd-quality
and a 96 kHz version.
As you can see here, I didn't have this album in my collection.
By simply clicking on Add To Library the metadata of this album is added to my collection and
will appear in my collection as if I own the album.
When I play it, it will collect the music from the Qobuz or Tidal server, depending
on what source I selected.
One question often asked is why Roon doesn't support other streaming services, like Deezer
or Spotify.
Roonlabs insists that streaming services have to be really integrated and to do so, the
streaming services need to give Roonlabs a deeper access to their service.
Most streaming services don't like that.
Why I don't know.
Perhaps they find modifying their servers to grant access to Roon to costly.
Safety could be a factor.
But whatever it may be, Roonlabs said already two years ago that they would be very happy
to add other streaming services, as long as they get sufficient access to the servers
so the Roon expedience remains in tact.
Users of Roon will see that the time-line wave-form along the bottom of the screen now
is wider and an icon called Queue is added.
When I start David Live from Qobuz you see the wave-form disappear.
Roon can only make wave-forms from local files.
When I click Queue, the cued music becomes visible and tracks can be moved up and down
to change the playback order.
There also is a menu and a heart-shaped icon to mark the track as favourite.
Now when I click on the album icon in the lower bar, the new Now Playing screen opens
and when lyrics are present, they are shown immediately.
If timed lyrics are present, which is indicated by a microphone with clock icon, the lines
will even be shown in sync with the music.

If no lyrics are present the track credits are shown but you can also switch to album
credits, artist bio or Artist photo.
There are many that tell me they miss the old fashioned vinyl cover for it was a great
read.
I find this a worthy replacement.
And if you have added cover art and pdf's of inlays, these can be opened as well, regardless
whether you use a computer, tablet or smartphone to control Roon.
The worst name for a feature ever must be Roon's Radio.
Many think it's about internet radio, which it isn't.
The internet radio function still is primitive.
Or, rather, searching and adding radio stations is very primitive.
Once added, it all works fine.
The Roon Radio function has nothing to do with internet radio.
It automatically searches music that matches the last played track - when switched on,
of course.
So after playing an album the music doesn't stop but continues with music that Roon considers
to have the same feel.
I already liked this in previous versions but Roonlabs now claims to have it further
improved using artificial intelligence.
It now offers an extended menu to comment on the music chosen by Roon.
So over time it will get better and better in knowing your preferences.
And - talking about integrating streaming services - it is no longer restricted to your
own music.
Roon Radio now also finds and plays music from Qobus and Tidal - provided you are subscribed
to one or both of these streaming services.
Over the almost three weeks I tested version 1.6 it confronted me with music I had never
heard.
Amongst hem some very interesting ones.
It appeared to be an interesting feature for discovering new music.
Why I have a subscription on both Qobuz and Tidal?
Well initially because of my work.
I needed it for testing Tidal for MQA and Qobuz on Roon 1.6, of instance.
I also planned to do a comparison between MQA from Tidal and 96 or 192 kHz from Qobuz.
That will not be soon though.
I also noted that - despite both services claim to have tens of millions of tracks on-line
- there are quite some tracks or albums that are exclusive to one service.
And neither offer all tracks.
I can only suggest to take a trial subscription and try them both.
More and more manufacturers support Roon Advanced Audio Transport - RAAT for short - making
their device a renderer for Roon, or endpoint as Roonlabs calls it.
And it can drive Sonos, Airplay , Chromecast and HQPlayer.
That's very handy for people that started with network audio some time ago and now can
use older - phased-out - equipment in the study, garage, children's rooms and so on.
And for audio journalists like me since I can use the same user interface, catalog and
playlists for a wide spectrum of hardware.
Don't be mistaken, I also have Audirvana Plus 3, Bluesound, JRiver Media Centre, Lightning
DS, Logitech Media Server, MinimServer, Roon Essentials on Elac, Samba share and Sonos
in my audio network.
But these are mainly present for research reasons.
Roon is by far my favourite music player and I expect the company to further grow and become
the standard for audiophiles - if they aren't already.
It IS the standard for me and my colleagues all over the western world.
I have bought a lifetime subscription without hesitation, might you wonder.
It would be nice if highresaudio.com would be added to the supported streaming services
for then all the lossless services I know are supported.
There will be people that would like voice control via Siri, Alexa or Google Assistent.
No me, by the way.
I like browsing through my albums on my iPad or computer.
The added play-screen of version 1.6 is ideal for this.
Perhaps the most important feature of Roon is ease of use.
The program is structured in a way that primary functions are easily found while over time
you discover more and more features.
In the mean time new equipment keeps streaming in, so next Friday, 17:00 hours CET yet another

TWO HUNDRED EPISODES of the V-LOG!
It's been a pretty long journey and we've had some great times together.
Our V-LOG has gone through many faces and voices,
and there's still so much we can do.
One thing's for sure.
We're all looking forward to creating many more episodes.
To celebrate this important milestone, we're creating a special contest.
We want you to create a 90 second tribute video for the V-LOG...
a montage of what you think were the best moments from these past 200 episodes.
Make sure you go as far back and as deep as you need to,
because there are some cool gems to dig up!
The best video will win weekly containers,
and will be featured in the next episode of the V-LOG.
Some important rules:
The video must not be longer than 90 seconds.
A couple of seconds here and there won't hurt,
but if you push it too far you'll be disqualified.
Don't use any copyrighted music in your montage.
Stick to the Tanki Online official themes
and don't be afraid to keep the original dialogue in there too.

So, get ready to have some fun revisiting these past 200 episodes
and snatch some cool prizes.
Today, Friday, a pretty big update has been released.
Let's look at it in detail!
Several turrets have been affected.
We buffed Shaft and Magnum,
slightly increasing their firing rate, making them more interesting to play.
Additionally, Magnum just got a cool new XT skin.
Check it out in the Shop.
Hammer and Striker have been nerfed a little.
Not the turrets themselves, but their alterations.
The Duplet on Hammer was too strong.
The double shot feature is cool, so we didn't want to touch it.
So to balance it out, we've increased clip reload time instead.
And we've done the same for Striker's "Uranium" Missile launcher,
since it was also too strong.
Next, Isida.
You could say that Isida has pretty much found its balance recently.
In fact, it's not Isida itself that is the problem...
but the tanks it repairs.
It's very hard to destroy a tank when it's constantly being repaired by Isida,
even if it's just sitting still and firing.
That's just not fun.
Fun is when everyone blows up!
So here's what we did with Isida:
We increased its area of effect so that it deals even more damage.
With the area of effect, the repair time has also increased.
This means you can repair tanks for a longer time,
which in turn brings you more battle points from a single charge.
However, we've reduced the rate of hitpoints restored.
So now, the turret's focus has shifted more towards attacking.
You can still earn good points by healing teammates,
but it's more of an option than a central feature.
Of course, if you still want your main focus to be on repairing teammates,
the "Support Nanobots" alteration is the way to go.
But you will have to sacrifice damage for that.
Also, in the name of holy-balance,
with this update we've made the matchmaking-Highways map slightly shorter.
We've also changed the distribution of containers in daily and weekly missions.
Up until now,
you've been receiving up to 6 regular containers and 3 weekly ones per week.
Now it's the other way around
You can earn a maximum of 3 regular containers,
and 6 weekly ones for your efforts.
And to conclude, three words about the upcoming release...
Cryo, Snow, Tuesday.
Today, January 25th, is the last day of the first Challenge in Tanki.
Since some of you have fallen a bit behind,
we're giving everyone a free day of Premium account.
Now you can complete stages twice as fast
and finish the challenge for some awesome prizes.
The next challenge starts very soon, on February 1st.
This one will be a bit shorter — 4 weeks.
All subsequent challenges
will also be starting on the 1st day of the month and have a duration of 4 weeks.
And with the exception of February's challenge,
there will be a two or three-day break between Challenges.

And if the rumors are true that it's going to be in the next Challenge,

Together with the start of the new Challenge,
we'll also be reducing the length of battles to 7 minutes.
And as you might have realized, the shorter the battles, the faster you can earn stars.
The "Masters of the Sword" tournament has just kicked off.
The first competition, which is for clans,
will not be open for everyone, only for the best.
Only clans from the first and second leagues may participate.
And for the first time ever,
the competition will not be held in the classic XP / BP format,
but in the Light format, that is, only light hulls, Railguns, and one Smoky per team.
Later on, we'll also be having
the Masters of the Sword Solo, Tandem and Trio tournaments.
These will be open to anyone with a rank of Brigadier or higher,
and will be held in the XP / BP format, so you can start training right away.
Now the prizes!
On top of large heaps of crystals and other goodies,
prizes will include shot effects for Railgun,
the Impulse paint, and the Spectrum M-B module
with 20% protection against all turrets and mines.
So, watch the Clan live streams,
and participate in the Solo, Tandem or Trio tournament versions
for some great rewards and lots of fun!
The "Discount Weekend" has just kicked off in Tanki.
