I'm here for Google I/O and I'm pretty excited
to learn a lot of stuff, meet new people.
Google's mission is to make the world's information
universally accessible and usable.
We do that with our products;
we also think we should do that for our events.
We've worked to make I/O more accessible this year
for speakers, attendees, and staff.
Everyone should experience things in the same way,
so we're hoping that we provide that experience here at I/O.
I have a hearing loss. I wear hearing aids.
I use subtitles, so by keeping me
in their thoughts, everyone gets a fair chance.
Accessibility matters because it's inclusion.
This year's I/O has more accessibility content than ever.
We try to think about accessibility from start to finish.
From the keynotes, to the sandboxes and sessions.
We've done a lot with accessibility at the Financial Times,
but we've not had as much effort put into our application
and I got lots of great advice for how we can improve it.
Since I need closed captioning, I got preferential seating,
so it's easier for me to see if I'm up close,
like that's going to be super helpful.
Not being included is more painful than being disabled.
Normally events aren't like this. I go somewhere
and there's a long, grassy patch or stairs that go up,
and I have to ask my friends to carry me up.
It ends up excluding a lot of people that really
want to come to these events, and these could be
really amazing people that can
make profound impacts on this industry.
The great thing about technology is it's constantly evolving.
In fact, we can even apply machine learning
to a 200-year-old technology: Morse code.
We're very, very excited to have Tania and Ken join us today.
I am here because we worked with Google on creating the
fantastic Gboard, and I hope it will help many have a voice.
We're here in the Accessibility Sandbox where we're
demoing new features for accessibility
including a new app called Lookout.
"Celery salt"
As a blind person, you don't realize how much
ambient text is truly around you in the world.
My goal today was to get as much information
as I could and I certainly did.
Accessibility matters because without it,
I and many people wouldn't be able to live life
and give back to the community.
