I had the scariest dream last night.
I dreamt I was in a kid's playground.
sitting on a swing chair, rocking back and forth.
nice and sunny day, kids running around.
wooohooo.
just by me feet, behind the bush, there was a huge tiger!
a big mouth full of teeth.
every time my feet got close to him,
he tried to bite it!
I was beginning to get in panic!
I woke up!
OMG
only to realize
that the sound of the tiger roaring
actually was me snoring!

I really wonder where most of you are from!
would you drop me a comment and let me know your nationality?
I got a phone call from a client,
asking me to photograph their spring&summer catalogue.
we set up a meeting,
I went to visit the client,
they showed me the clothes,
then we gonna discuss how the pictures are going to be taken.
I saw the clothes and that's how they look like,
check this out!
pants, vests, looks like mens clothes, doesn't it?
the very first thing that came across my mind
was the image of a Hollywood actress
during 1940's.
her name was Katherine Hepburn,
also known as Kate, the greatest panted one.
she was the star of a movie called Sylvia Scarlet,
she pretends to be a man,
she is pretty much like a drag-king.
when men dress like women they are known as drag-queens,
but when women pretend to be a man they are known as drag-kings.
Katherine Hepburn was a perfect man!
check out, she has her hair glued to her head...
this kind of silk look.
she was smooth,
she was a man!
no women could wear pants better than her!
I said to the client, what if the photograph the catalogue...
based on Katherine's image.
the hair, the make-up, the attitude...
the client said, yes let's do it!
another image that came across my mind
was the image of Marlene Dietrich.
she was wearing a top hat,
smoking cigars...
pretending to be man.
the client agreed with everything I said.
what if we do the same kind of Hollywood lighting?
the harsh lighting.
strong shadows.
maybe we can get some props,
but the client said, no need for props because it will take attention away from the clothes.
ok, let's keep it simple, let's photograph against a white backdrop.
the client suggested to use curtains.
curtains could be interesting too.
we photograph a few different images,
I am going to show you now
a few different videos of how the photos were taken.
have a look!
you see that I made full use of the shadows,
I told the models to pose in a way that also the shadows were gonna look good.
turn a bit more this way, open a bit more your elbow.
nice shadows, I just love it!
the hair, make-up and styling were all perfect!
great team work.
everyone did a great job.
the photos turned out great!
I just love these pictures.
now let me tell you how the lighting was done.
there is an interesting story about it.
an art director of an advertising agency
saw the dragkings pictures in my website,
and called me asking if I could make the same kind of lighting
for a tyre brand advertising.
sure! I see it as a good chance to film a tutorial video
where I can pretty much explain to you
how the lighting for the dragkings and for the tyre brand
was done. have a look.
have a look at this photo here,
looks like the sun is coming through the door.
you see that the edge of the shadow is very sharp.
to achieve this kind of look
with a flash is quite difficult,
because you don't have a modelling light
to show you where the shadow is.
that's why i chose a 4000W HMI.
it is powerful enough so I can have an even aperture
from the top of her head
all the way down to her feet.
to get that shadow edge really sharp,
I pointed the HMI to a mirror.
the mirror bounced the light back to the wall.
I told my assistant
to move back and forth
so I could see how her shadow was gonna look.
the light beam was a bit too big.
I covered one side of the mirror with black paper to make it a bit more narrow.
the studio was all white,
so I covered everything with black sheets
so only the mirror would bounce the light back to the wall.
otherwise the wall was gonna look grey instead of black.
to get the correct white balance,
I used a Kelvin meter,
hoping to get as close as possible to 5500 K.
which is the daylight temperature.
gladly the studio's HMI was quite well balanced,
I set my camera to 5560 K.
the model was ready to go...
and rock&roll...
the art director was in the studio and he could start working on the lay-out of the advertising straight away.
and I was thinking...can we go and have a beer now?
you see? it is quite simple! all you need is a mirror and a spot light.
it doesn't need to be necessarily a huge mirror.
you can do with something this big.
you don't need a HMI too.
you can do with a 500W photoflood lamp.
all you have to do is set the photoflood lamp behind the model,
make sure you block the light so you don't get lens flare.
the light is gonna be pointed this way.
the light is gonna bounce off the mirror
to the model's face.
it is going to look like this.
this is a picture that I took long ago for a magazine,
but you can see how it works with a small mirror.
sorry for old photo poor quality.
what happens if you get really close to the model's face?
you see the light beam very nicely on her face.
it works great for a nice portrait.
you should try, very easy setting to do and doesn't cost a lot!
a photoflood lamp is around 50 dollars.
now let me show you the preview of the video I will upload next week.
yeah! next week it will a be a nice pin up style sexy photoshooting, you will love it!
don't forget to subscribe.
don't forget to comment your nationality! I would love to hear from you!
see you next week.
thanks for watching.
