Youtube daily May 17 2018

So in a recent video, I spoke about a study on blame contagion that used a story about

Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The story detailed a failure of Schwarzenegger's when he was the Governor of California – in

one version he took full responsibility for his failure, and in the alternate version

he blamed other people.

The group exposed to this blame shifting were twice as likely to blame others for their

personal mistakes.

And I wondered… how many times has Arnold Schwarzenegger been mentioned in scientific

studies?

And then this question consumed me….

The answer… gets a little out of hand.

As I turned to Google Scholar, I figured there were probably a handful of political science

papers on Schwarzenegger's time as governor, possibly some fitness or bodybuilding studies,

and definitely a few things referencing his films.

I grossly underestimated the scientific impact of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

First of all, it turns out he's a great example for common problems in information

and data sciences: like how do you know if a name in your database is a duplicate or

if there are just two people with the same name?

Hint: Arnold Schwarzenegger is always a duplicate.

In a table of US citizens, Arnold Schwarzenegger is a very rare name.

And strangely enough, he's also a helpful example because his name is so hard to spell.

What if someone is searching for Arnold S-H-W-A-R-T-Z-I-N-E-G-E-R?

How does your search know who they're talking about?

Well, there's a paper for that too, on how we can optimise search algorithms to look

for results that are similar rather than exact matches.

To be honest, most of the information science and mathematical linguistics papers were very

complex.

Automatic Fine-Grained Entity Typing by Hierarchical Partial-Label Embedding.

Sure.

And luckily, they're just the tip of the iceberg.

Apart from just using his name, there seems to be a study looking at every part of Arnold's

career – He's kind of done everything

So what makes him such a popular choice to be used in research?

Schwarzenegger sits at the intersection of many cultural spaces and academic fields of

study.

Also, he's just a fun example.

Looking at Arnold as a professional bodybuilder, he's mentioned in a paper talking about

sarcopenia, or the degradation of muscles with age.

And he's also mentioned in a paper looking at the attractiveness of averages versus extremes.

Spoiler: Arnold "Sex Symbol" Schwarzenegger falls in the attractive extreme category.

And yes, the scientific paper calls him a sex symbol, so if that's confirmed by science

He's also mentioned, unsurprisingly, in papers on nutritional supplements and anabolic

steroids.

Even papers about very serious public health issues, like "the effect of body weight

on adolescent academic performance" (It found that white teen girls who weigh more,

perform worse in school.

For everyone else, it's complicated.)

Even papers about animal behavior throw in a mention of Arnold here and there, like "Biological

effects of locomotor play: Getting into shape, or something more specific?"

(It turns out animals don't just play to get fit, it's also good for other things

like motor learning).

The fact that I didn't find a paper called "Is Arnold Schwarzenegger Actually a Robot:

A Multidisciplinary Approach" actually surprised me, but maybe I just didn't get far enough

in the results.

Once he became an actor and a cultural icon in his own right, a lot of papers starting

looking at Schwarzenegger's impact on culture as a whole.

"Do Movie Stars Encourage Adolescents to Start Smoking?

Evidence from California" found that yes, adolescents who prefer actors who smoke, or

whose characters smoke, are more likely to pick up the habit themselves, and yes, Arnold

is one of those celebrities.

Other papers looked at his impact on culture through the lens of his identity as masculinity-made-flesh.

Papers like "Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mister Universe?

Hollywood Masculinity And The Search Of The New Man" or "Gender and the Action Heroine:

Hardbodies and the "Point of No Return"" look at what make our badass movie stars so

badass, and how that relates to gender norms and culture as a whole.

As expected, there are lots of papers on "Arnie's" time as governor, a.k.a.

The governator, and the recall election during which he won office.

Papers like "Somebody versus nobody: An exploration of the role of celebrity status

in an election" looked at how his fame impacted the election – participants showed a greater

intention to vote for a candidate who was a recognizable Hollywood actor rather than

an unknown candidate, regardless of the political information provided about the candidates.

And a bunch of papers that examine fame and politics from slightly different angles.

Others look at his political impact and surprisingly, most focus on his work as an environmentalist

after he was governor.

"The Making of an Environmental Hero: A History of Ecomodern Masculinity, Fuel Cells

and Arnold Schwarzenegger explores how Schwarzenegger's symbolic masculine persona expanded to include

compassion and responsible care for the environment.

And "'Charismatic megafauna': The growing power of celebrities and pop culture in climate

change campaigns" looks at how the un-endangered species of the modern celebrity is replacing

the polar bear as the "charismatic megafauna" glamourising climate awareness.

More than anything – now you know that Ecomodern Masculinity and Charismatic Megafauna are

phrases you can use in your everyday life.

And in psychology, naturally, there's the Arnold Schwarzenegger Effect.

Of course he has his own effect.

The study "The "Arnold Schwarzenegger Effect": Is strength of the "victim"

related to misinterpretations of harm intrusions?"

looked at how we feel in response to a car accident involving an elderly man versus one

involving a young, fit, able-bodied man, like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It found that when the victim is the Governator, we feel less distress, and weaker feelings

of "moral wrongness" than we would if the victim was perceived to be more frail.

This is an especially important finding for doctors, who may misdiagnose or underweight

pain reporting in patients who appear otherwise strong and healthy.

In neuroscience, one study asked memory-impaired individuals to imagine, with as much detail

as possible, "Arnold Schwarzenegger interacting with a typewriter in an attic."

Another asked participants to play a pictionary style game and draw Schwarzenegger, among

other celebrities.

And Arnie's face has been used as an example in a bunch of facial recognition experiments.

Once you're used in a famous faces test, you kinda walk into a lifetime of scientific

analysis.

So at this point, I was on page 18 of the Google scholar search and realised there were

A LOT of papers mentioning Arnold.

I hadn't quite trusted the accuracy of the initial search – it showed tens of thousands

of results.

But my researcher Teagan and I had read more than 100 papers mentioning Arnold Schwarzenegger

and… they just kept coming.

[

Well, based on the types of papers we'd seen come up, even if only 54% of the results

are actual academic papers then there are approximately 15,000 papers that mention him.

If we flashed one title on screen every second, this video would run for more than four hours.

I told you it got out of hand.

So think of this video as the top hits — every study is contained with these search pages

on Google Scholar.

Though, there are a few things that all 15,000 scientific studies have in common.

Obviously they all mention Arnold Schwarzenegger, but they do so for a reason.

From his name and image to his fame and cultural impact – he's a fascinating individual

and a solid example.

And now he keeps getting used as an example in studies to ensure things can be replicated.

Science builds on science.

On top of that, people have a tendency to use celebrities and pop culture to make difficult

ideas easier to digest.

We can be certain that no matter how many times Arnie says – "cya" "hasta la

vista" "..." – in the world of academia, this father of Ecomodern Masculinity will

always "be back".

IT'S ALL BECAUSE OF GOOGLE HOME - Duration: 10:28.

If you want to turn on the TV you just need to say, "Hey Google!".

(Janice is panic) Michael, it's showing a respond!

Finally!

We were able to buy this

Let's open it!

We bought this together with our friends

Because you will get a $30 off on a Google Home and a free shipping if you purchase a Google Mini

So yeah. That's the story behind this. We bought ours alongside our friends' products as well.

okay!

Let's find the nearest power plug!

Then you can explain the steps to the viewers, right?

Cause I don't understand how to activate and use that thing.

Let's download the Google App first!

Oh do we need the app?

Yeah, I think so. Just in case.

Look over here! (The instruction did mentioned to download the Google App)

I think it's better to plug it right there.

You have to plug in the Google Home for 24 hours.

Because the purpose of this device is to control all the smart devices & turned your home into a smart home.

But since not every things in our apartment are smart devices

We only have a smart TV here.

Yeah, only the TV.

Since we already have smart TV , why don't we just buy the Google Home and give it a try, right?

And they're offering a discount as well so why not?

And there will be a lot of smart homes in the future so why don't we buy this thing now, right?

So why we choose to buy Google Home instead of the other smart home devices out there? (e.g., Echo Dot, Alexa, etc)

That's because after we did some research

Google Home has a better data mining so it contains a lot of information compared to the other smart devices

Dear viewers...

So we are trying to figure out how to activate this device using the App

If I press this button on the phone, the sound will come out from the google home

The reason behind I bought the Google Home is

because I love to cook new recipe....

and it's hard for me to keep looking on the recipe from my phone while cooking

And this Google Home.....

The Google Home can help us to find a recipe

And help us read the recipe step by step while we are cooking.

which I found really helpful.

So....

We are setting up the speaker and everything

It also can be synchronized to our credit card or paypal

But I suggest to not sync your credit card with this device

I think if we own a smart device, it is important to always be careful and smart on using it.

Thankfully I have him in my life hahaha

It works!

Let the viewers know how to set up the Google Home then!

Don't pick your nose! Hahaha

The app explains how to set up this thing step by step

So the first step is...

Plug the Google Home on the power cord

Then what?

After it's turned on, then the Google Home will ask you to download the app

Sorry I'm not used to talk to the camera

Then you have to download the Google Home App on your phone

After you download it, the App will direct you for the next steps

It was easy!

Right now, I'm trying to find a way on how to sync the Google Home with our smart TV

So the goal is to turn on the smart TV just by saying

Hey Google!

Oh! It's showing a response!

From what I know

Google Home is still not available for sale in Indonesia

Even the Google Home Mini....

Let me promote these products to you guys!

The Google Home Mini only costs you IDR 600,000

And it's so small and compact

Only IDP 600,000 for this smart device!

And super compact!

It is available in three different colors:

black,

pink,

and grey

Ask her, when did Stephen Hawking die?

She knows it even though Stephen Hawking just died yesterday.

It's all thanks to Google search engine

because it connects to the Internet

So another reason behind we bought Google Home instead of Alexa....

even though Alexa is significantly cheaper

It's because Google Home contains more data since it uses Google search engine

Also it can understand a lot of accents

especially Asian accent

It also can speaks in different languages

while Alexa still can't do it. Maybe one day.

As for now, only Google Home can speaks different languages

I'm curious, what if you ask her your name?

Can you enter my name in her system?

So she's not recognize me then

If you want, you have to use your own Google account. I used my account on her.

But you said it's our Google Home not yours only

Let's fight then! Hahaha

So that's the Google Home and that's Michael standing there

We'll test whether we can operate Google Home from afar without really shouting

Chris Cornell on His 1st Solo Album 'Euphoria Morning' (1999) | #TBMTV - Duration: 4:54.

- It's like throwing darts, for me,

making a record that's like, you know,

one of 'em hits, uh, you know,

this close to the bullseye,

one of 'em hits this close to the bullseye,

one of 'em hits the cat.

(electronic creaking and clicking)

(keys typing)

What was different, it was just moments, really,

when I initially started writing songs

and it was clearly going off in different directions.

There was nobody in my band I was playing tapes for

to give me a perspective and in the past,

you know, about half the stuff

that my band didn't like I would listen to

five years later and I would think,

thank god that somebody told me that this sucked

'cause it's really awful.

(interviewer laughs)

And, uh, I didn't have anybody like that

and eventually, you know,

Natasha was sort of helping me out with that as well

and we didn't always agree either

but there was other aspects of it too.

Like the production of the album,

the first day the drummer shows up,

I realized that I was always involved

in every part of Soundgarden production

but not drums, really, because Matt was so good

at what he did, I just let him do it

and I had never done it before

and so it's the first day and the drum sounds are coming up

and it doesn't sound great to me

but I'm thinking, you know,

I don't really know how to make it sound the way I want

and it took a couple days of a couple different songs

and I realized, hey, I can do this

because really it's all about your ear.

You have to trust it, if it sounds good to you,

great, then it's good and if it doesn't sound good to you,

you just describe what's missing and change it and it works.

- And it's your job to try and figure out

what is is you're trying to get.

- Yeah, it's actually really simple.

You don't even have to read a manual or anything.

- (chuckles) How about some of the specific songs on this,

like 'Can't Change Me', what was the genesis of that

and how did that transform as you recorded it?

- Um, that one was pretty straightforward.

I did a demo of it at home that's almost exactly like

the record, I mean, there's keyboards

and the chorus of the song kinda transformed on the record

but the basic idea is really similar.

That's one of those kind of 15 minute songs

where I started getting the idea musically

and then the lyrics were sort of integral

like through just, the melody started to come

with the lyrics already attached,

so the whole thing just kind of (blows) rolled out

and simple, quick, which are,

a lot of people say those are the best songs

but the reason why is if you don't labor over anything,

you're not tired of it yet so it seems

like the best song.

- But the vocal has a kind of fragility and power

that maybe was hard to get across

in front of, you know, a big, thick band

like you had before.

- Mm-hmm.

- Did that seem, was that a liberating thing for you?

- It's a fun thing, that's for sure.

Especially in recording a song and then mixing

and like listening for vocal nuances

that you might recognize in another harder song

and really like it and then when you go to mix,

you can't get it out, you know,

you almost try to push that little part out

and it doesn't, you're not gonna hear it.

So it's fun when you're mixing and recording.

- People will hear a lot, it's the video,

so I guess folks will be nibbling at the lyric a little bit.

How would you sort of describe what it means?

- Um, well I guess, the, the original,

or not the original but the immediate idea

that someone is gonna get is that it's

a guy making a statement to a woman

about, you know, you can't change me so fuck off.

But it's not that, really,

it's the guy is sort of discovering

that he's involved with this person

that has amazing power in a positive way

and can affect positive change

but it doesn't seem to be rubbing off on him

in any way and he's kind of discovering that

and in a sense it's kind of a sad moment.

- We'll be, obviously because it's your solo record,

we'll be looking for hints of autobiography

in a lot of these songs.

Will they be looking successfully?

Is there a lot of you in here

or are you playing a character?

- Um, there's a lot, yeah, and there's also characters.

I mean, you'll have to put on your little miner's helmet

with the light and like go into the record

and there's part of Chris, oh, that's not him, okay.

'Cause, I don't know, you never know,

I mean, I'd probably have to read through

all the lyrics right now and remind myself

of what was the moment if it's actually me

and what's a character that I'm creating.

Some moments are, that are clearly me

are also moments that I've seen

in a lot of really close friends

and I could be speaking for me,

I could be speaking for them, or, you know,

hopefully somebody else I've never met before

because the universal quality's

the thing that to me is exciting when somebody

can hear lyrics and feel like someone else out there's

going through what they're going through

and previously they thought they were the only one,

you know, 'cause that's what,

human nature is always thinking,

"This is horrible and I'm the only one's

"that's going through this horrible thing

"and no one will understand."

And then you realize as you get older

and you have experiences that everybody

really goes through a lot of the same things.

(electronic creaking and clicking)

According to the trade ministry, last month, car sales jumped four-point-seven percent

on-year..

But domestic vehicle production dipped six-point-four percent.

Auto exports were also eight percent lower than the same period in 2017, due to lower

demand overseas, and increased competition from rival brands.

Meanwhile, GM Korea's sales plummeted by more than 54 percent due to consumers' concerns

over its revival plan.

Objective of N. Korea-U.S. talks stays same, which is CVID: Bolton - Duration: 1:17.

John Bolton reaffirmed his commitment to making sure the summit happens.

However the top official also highlighted, Washington won't back down on its stance of

complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea.

Kim Mok-yeon shares with us his remarks.

U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton has said that he's trying to stay optimistic

and realistic at the same time, following North Korea's summit cancellation threat.

Speaking to Fox News Radio on Wednesday,... Bolton said the U.S. will do everything it

can to have a successful meeting,... but will not back away from its objective,... which

is the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea.

He added that during the recent inter-Korean summit, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed

to denuclearize, and if Pyongyang changes its mind, the U.S. will find out and the scheduled

summit in Singapore will be "pretty short".

The U.S. official also said that he has spoken to his South Korean counterpart, Chung Eui-yong

on the possible reasons behind North Korea's sudden about turn.

The remarks come after the North's vice foreign minister, Kim Kye-gwan threatened that if

Washington continues pushing the North to unilaterally get rid of its nuclear weapons,

Pyongyang will not show up to the summit table.

U.S. seeks to cut trade deficit with China in trade talks - Duration: 2:07.

Trade officials of Washington and Beijing met once again.

A more amicable atmosphere was set for their latest sit-down in the U.S. capital, mainly

because of President Trump's decision on Chinese telecom firms.

Choi Si-young provides a closer look into round 2 of their talks.

The focus of the talks was on narrowing the trade deficit.

The U.S. delegation led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur

Ross and Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer sat down with its Chinese counterparts led

by vice-premier Liu He to try and settle trade disputes.

At the meeting, the US demanded China reduce its trade surplus by 200 billion U.S. dollars

by 2020.

The U.S. also requested the Chinese government to discontinue support for "China Manufacturing

2025," China's blueprint for upgrading its manufacturing sector.

China seemed receptive to the U.S. demands.

The Chinese government is considering removing punitive tariffs on imported U.S. agriculture

items.

It is also reviewing whether to ease non-tariff barriers like import quotas, government subsidies

or customs delays.

"We hope to not see the escalation of U.S.-China trade tensions.

Of course, we have made preparations for all outcomes."

Such moves come in response to President Trump's surprising decision to lift the ban on Chinese

telecommunications firms doing business in the United States.

"We hope that the relevant departments of the U.S. side will take realistic actions

quickly to resolve the (ZTE) case in a just and fair manner."

Adding to the positive outlook on the negotiations is the reduced role of hawkish White House

trade adviser and harsh China critic Peter Navarro.

He is participating in the discussions at the negotiating table but is not officially

on the U.S. representative list.

He was on the official delegation at the first round of trade talks in Beijing.

With China displaying a more agreeable posture and fewer hardliners in the US delegation,

experts are predicting a more positive result from these trade negotiations than from the

previous round in Beijing.

North Korean friendship group meets Chinese leader Xi Jinping - Duration: 1:41.

Pyongyang appears to be strengthening ties with its traditional ally.

A group of North Korean top officials visited Beijing and even sat down for talks with the

Chinese president.

Oh Jung-hee zooms in on how two sides once again agreed to further solidify their friendship.

Following North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's visits to China in late March and just last

week,... this time, a North Korean delegation visited Beijing.

Called a friendship visiting group, the delegation included senior party officials and was led

by Pak Thae-song, the vice chairman of the Workers' Party's Central Committee.

The group met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday.

Noting that he shared detailed views with Kim Jong-un,...

President Xi said China hopes to further advance interactions and cooperation between Pyongyang

and Beijing.

The Chinese leader said he backs the improvement of inter-Korean relations, the planned summit

between Pyongyang and Washington... as well as the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

But it seems the most important part of the delegation's visit was to find out more about

China's economy.

The delegation highlighted that its China visit was to carry out what had been agreed

between Kim and Xi,... which includes learning from Beijing's experience in economic development,

reform, and opening up to the world.

President Xi said China supports North Korea's efforts to develop its economy.

This follow's North Korea's policy shift last month from simultaneous development of nuclear

weapons and economy to a complete focus on building a socialist economy.

President Moon calls for tangible results of innovative growth and government's active role - Duration: 2:32.

President Moon Jae-in reviewed the government's initiatives for innovative growth and the

progress made thus far.

He emphasized the need for speed in reforming the nation's regulation as well as effort

to make a positive impact on people's lives through the strategies.

Hwang Hojun has the highlights from the liberal leader's session with government officials

and business leaders.

Last November, President Moon Jae-in discussed strategies on innovation-led growth and how

to cope with the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

"A prerequisite for innovation-led growth is a swift reform of regulations on new industries

and new technologies.

Creative ideas in the private sector should not be held back by outdated regulations and

practices."

Fast forward six months, the South Korean President reviewed the progress of the administration's

growth initiatives with government officials and local business leaders.

"I want to stress once again that speed is of the essence.

Faced with the limitations of growth and employment, our economy must succeed in innovative growth

to make a new leap forward."

President Moon noted the administration has been laying the building blocks for innovation,

by creating a friendlier environment for startups.

It has begun regulatory reforms,... and has started providing tax support for innovative

technologies and businesses, as well as preparing roadmaps for smart cities, drones, fintech,

and smart factories.

But the liberal leader insisted that the efforts are still short of tangible results for the

people,... and that the government's strategy must improve people's daily lives.

And to do so,...

President Moon asked the government to swiftly commercialize innovative technologies such

as hydrogen-powered electric vehicles, 5G mobile communication, artificial intelligence,

and drones.

A visually impaired working mother took the stage during the meeting, to show the audience

how the AI speaker she had been given has made her daily life and raising a child so

much easier.

President Moon also pledged that the government will try to speed up regulatory reforms to

boost innovative growth, and that it will actively look for public sector demand for

innovative products, in order to create initial markets.

"The private sector should and must take the lead in innovative growth, but the government's

active promotion of it is also necessary."

Innovative growth has been one of the three key pillars of the Moon administration's "people-centered

economy",... along with income-driven growth and fairness.

South Korea to disclose FX intervention records and support the use of LNG powered vessels - Duration: 1:50.

South Korea plans to improve transparency in foreign exchange transactions.

The move is designed to help lift suspicions of Seoul playing around with its currency

to give exporters at home an unfair advantage.

For more on what was discussed during an econ ministers meeting, we turn to our Kim Hyesung.

South Korea will start disclosing its currency market intervention records on a regular basis.

At an economic ministers meeting on Thursday, the Bank of Korea and the Finance Ministry

said they will disclose the country's net buying and selling of U.S. dollars.

The government will reveal details every six months for one year starting from the second

half of 2018.

From then on, the government will disclose the details on a quarterly basis.

The announcement comes after the U.S. government and the IMF repeatedly called on South Korea

to release its FX intervention records and enhance transparency.

South Korea, along with China, avoided being labeled a currency manipulator in the U.S.

Treasury Department's semiannual report in April, but was kept on its currency "monitoring

list."

Finance Minister Kim Dong-yeon said the measure will help remove unnecessary misunderstandings

about the country's currency market operations and help build trust about its policies in

the long run.

Another focus during the meeting was on the use of Liquefied Natural Gas or LNG-powered

vessels.

The government plans to gradually replace its towing vessels that use Bunker C or diesel,

which emit fine dust particles, with LNG-powered vessels that are more eco-friendly.

It will place its first order for two LNG-powered vessels in August that will sail between South
