Remembering May 18th Democratic Movement - Duration: 1:57.
And in light of today's solemn anniversary in remembering many innocent civilians that
were killed by government troops.... we go back in time with our Ko Roon-hee who takes
a look back at the day of the uprising.
Thousands of people took to the streets on May 18th, 1980 in the southwestern Korean
city of Gwangju.
This was after then-president Chun Doo-hwan seized power in a military coup and took suppressive
measures... such as banning political activities and imposing martial law.
Protesters were beaten and fired upon by government troops during the military crackdown.
This left an unknown number of people dead and thousands more wounded.
Although the uprising was quelled on May 27th, 1980, a look back in history has proven that
it was a victory, not a defeat… as it paved the way for later movements in the 1980s that
eventually brought democracy to the country.
Last year, South Korean President Moon Jae-in vowed to carry on its legacy…by reopening
the probe into possible crimes that may have been committed by the troops.
"Demanding the truth of the May 18 Democratic Movement is not a political issue.
It is about common sense and justice.
It is also about protecting the value of democracy in South Korea."
Recently, a rare video capturing the scenes of the democratic movement was disclosed to
the public.
A private collector notified the May 18 Archives of the video's existence in December last
year, and the archives purchased it in March.
The new video shows soldiers implementing martial law and wounded citizens at local
hospitals.
The footage will be screened at the archive until May 30th... to remind citizens of a
pivotal moment in the country's modern history, that continues to provide inspiration for
freedom and human rights.

downside to such apps is that they aren't always connected,

This is where mobile navigation apps such as Waze shine, and the good news for Ford
owners with an iPhone is that together with Waze,
iPhone users will now be able to project their aps on the built-in displays on Ford dashboards,
with Waze being the focus in this particular announcement.
All this requires is the SYNC AppLink, a connected iPhone, the latest version of Waze, and iOS
11.3 or later.
Waze itself will continue to run on the iPhone, but microphone and touch controls have been
moved over to the car.
This means that users won't need to fiddle around with their phones while they drive
and can instead rely on the bigger screen of their dashboard along with voice controls.

Trump blames 'spoiled China' for sluggish progress of trade talks - Duration: 2:32.
The U.S. once again turning up the heat on China over trade.
Amid a second round of trade talks with China in Washington,... Trump said... he had his
doubts on whether they'd be successful... since he believes China has become "spoilt"
after years of having it easy with U.S. trade negotiators.
Choi Si-young tells us more.
"But with all the years and all the years that you've covered trade and nations and
wars and everything else, you've never seen a people come over from China to work on a
trade deal.
Now, will that be successful?
I tend to doubt it.
The reason I doubt it is because China has become very spoiled."
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Thursday, President Trump expressed his doubts
about reaching an agreement with China over trade, as the world's two largest economies
sat down for crunch negotiations to avert a potential trade war.
Trump's remarks come as the two sides are holding round two of their high-stakes talks
on trade.
The first round held in Beijing earlier this month yielded little in the way of progress.
Back on home ground, the U.S. delegation made up of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Commerce
Secretary Wilbur Ross and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer held talks with their Chinese
counterparts led by China's Vice Premier Liu He in a bid to narrow their differences.
The New York Times reports that China is preparing to offer the U.S. a deal to buy 200 billion
dollars' worth of American goods.
Under the deal, China would buy a range of American goods, including everything from
soybeans to semiconductors and natural gas.
The Chinese vice premier, also the top economic adviser to Chinese President Xi Jinping, is
expected to present the deal to the U.S. on Friday.
Experts, however, remain skeptical over how effective such a deal would be in narrowing
China's sizable trade surplus with the U.S.
They argue that, even if China sharply increases its purchases of American goods in the short
term, it probably wouldn't come close to the proposed 200 billion dollars.
Plus, the U.S. is already running at its full productive capacity, so it would be unrealistic
for the U.S. to meet greater demands from China.
President Trump's top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, says Washington's stance on trade
with China remains the same.
He says the U.S. will continue to pressure Beijing to open its market to U.S. companies,
by removing trade barriers and respecting intellectual property rights.
With the U.S. eager to grab the upper-hand in the remaining negotiations, it remains
to be seen whether the two world's largest economies can arrive at a compromise, avoiding
a devastating trade clash.

S. Korean gov't commemorates 38th anniversary of May 18th Democracy Movement in Gwangju - Duration: 3:16.
Today marks the 38th anniversary of the May 18th democratic movement,... which took place
in the southern city of Gwangju,... in 1980.
Our correspondent Park Ji-won has this report about today's ceremony in Gwangju.
The government-organized ceremony for the 38th anniversary of the May 18th Democratic
Movement was held Friday morning,... at the May 18th National Cemetery,... in Gwangju.
Some five thousand participants,.. including bereaved family members of the victims,...
citizens, students, and politicians,... attended the event.
In his speech,...
Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon vowed that the government will work hard to find the truth
about what happened,... much of which,... such as who first gave the order to open fire
on civilians,... is still not known.
"I believe when the special truth committee on the democratic movement,... formed according
to a special act on May 18th enacted during the Moon administration,... is launched in
September,... the committee will clearly reveal all the truth, without any restrictions or
any doubts."
The Prime Minister also called the democratic movement the 'victory of justice',... saying
that Korea will always remember the sacrifices of Gwangju that contributed to the nation's
democracy.
Although never confirmed,... it is widely thought that there are some five thousand
victims of the massacre,.. including over 160 deaths,... hundreds of others missing,...
and thousands injured.
Victims and bereaved family members still haven't gotten over the grief.
"I witnessed the scene, even though I was young.
I saw dead bodies, crying family members, so every year, the scene comes up as a trauma."
"My friends were shot many times, bleeding to death.
I feel ashamed in front of all those martyrs."
Foreign participants also say South Korea's pro-democracy movement has become an inspiration
to their countries too.
"The spirit of Gwangju is from the minimum to the ultimate.
That is, for example, housewives, they made food, but also fight.
Daughters who made sacrifices in many, many ways, like giving blood, but the ultimatum
is giving lives.
This is great, this is something we need to learn."
What is also notable is that wives of a late foreign journalist, and pastors,... who recorded
the massacre 38 years ago,... either with video cameras or through photographs,... to
let the rest of the world to know the truth about what happened in Gwangju,... were also
present at the ceremony,... remembering all those who fought for a just and democratic
society.
"The actions of the brave Gwangju citizens who stood up against the injustices of the
military dictatorship,... even sacrificing their lives for the cause,... eventually led
to the end of the military regimes,... and the start of true democracy in Korea.
