Hi guys and welcome back to Relax My Cat, my name's Savannah and here with me is
Mia looking a little bit moody because it's warm, so I'm going to make this
video for you which is quintessential to owning a black cat or any cat actually
and what video could be so quintessential, quintessential?
this one is how to keep your cat cool during summer, so to kick off these tips
I'm gonna start with a really easy one get your cat a fan, I know it sounds
a bit weird but we've got a super cheap one for Mia it's just there next to her
bed, yeah it's really quiet so if your cat is a bit nervous, definitely play
they Relax My Cat music in the background as you're introducing your
cat to your fan, you can get a really quiet one as well like we did with Mia but
she's had no problems with hers and she really likes it, a good tip for keeping your
cat cool is definitely keep a lot of areas in your home shaded, maybe keep one
room with the curtains drawn where she can go if she needs a- good girl! Aww! - a
place where she can go for some shade, nice piece of floor just to flop on
because you can make as many cool little areas if you want
your cat is gonna choose her own little place no matter where you put these
little devices that I tell you about today, also as well as you're cutting off
a lot direct sunlight from your cat, make sure you keep your home ventilated as
well, what you can hear at the moment is all the traffic going by because I've
got all the windows open because Mia is a black cat, I am very conscious of her
temperature, so I apologize in post for the sound of traffic. Next one is ice
I know it sounds a little bit stupid but Mia actually loves ice and it's great if
you have to leave the house as well, just pop a few ice cubes in their
water bowl and that'll keep it nice and cool, also another one we do for Mia if you've
got a metal or ceramic bowl put it in the fridge for a little while to get the
material cold and Mia loves to kind of like lie around it, it's adorable
now I don't recommend cooling packs, you know the ones that you can buy
from the store however you can make your own, the main reason I don't recommend
these is because if your cat claws them open or eats anything that's inside, we
don't know what that can do to your pet and I don't wanna- that's
really scary for me so I don't even want to try it so how you can make your
own is just get like a tea towel and wet it, pop it in a ziploc bag and
freeze it and then that's it, you can wrap up in your cat's blanket or put
underneath the bed, I usually put it underneath a pillow but it's not too hot
today, she's doing all right, these can make a massive difference on a hot
day and I will admit I've used them for me before so yeah, they're good, they work
and lastly this one is for the lighter cats, did you know that cats can
actually get sunburnt, Mia, I've never had a problem with Mia obviously, but
cats that have lighter colours or white cats or cream cats, their noses and their ears and
anywhere where there's not a lot of fur can get sunburnt, so keep an eye out for
this, any redness take them straight to the vet, the best ways to avoid this
is keep your cat inside during, you know, really really hot times of the day, so like
11 until 4ish keep your cat inside and when the sun is a little
bit cooler then let your cat out, Mia's never had sunburn like I said but when she
was younger she managed to get up onto the side where we had candles and
sniffed a candle, it was terrible she burnt her little nose and it was just, oh it
was awful, so until we could get her to the vet the next day after we, you know, treated the
wound, I put a little bit of coconut oil on, that just helped soothe it and that
helps her relax a lot more, a lot of vets actually recognize coconut oil when
treating dermatitis with cats and even with humans - which i think is kind of
