Youtube daily May 9 2018

- So we're here at day one of Google IO

checking out new features for Google Lens.

It's an AR and AI platform for the company,

and it's basically built into Google Assistant,

and now it's built right into the smart phone's camera.

So Google first introduced Google Lens last year,

and basically at the time, it was a way to look

through the camera's viewfinder

and identify objects in photos.

Now Lens is much more sophisticated.

It uses all Google's understanding

of natural language processing,

and object recognition, image recognition.

It combines it into one big platform.

So that the smart phone can see and understand

the world around it and it can parse human language.

Prior to today, Google Lens was only available within

Google Assistant.

Now it works right from the smart phone's camera

and it works in other devices.

Right here we have an LGG7

and we have a whole wall of props behind us

that we can use Google Lens to identify

and get information from Google Search.

There are three ways to access Google Lens.

The first is to just open the camera

and click the Google Lens button.

From there the phone starts looking

and trying to identify objects it sees through

the viewfinder.

The second way to access Google Lens

is basically just by touching and holding the home

button down here launching Assistant and just clicking the

lens button.

And as you can see right now,

Lens already sees and identifies objects

with these little colored dots,

that's how it knows what it is.

Tapping on one of the dots,

will pull up Google search results.

So you see it understands that this is an album

by Justice Woman and conveniently Justice happens

to be the artist performing at Google IO tomorrow.

And the third way to access Google Lens will

be a double tap on the camera button,

but that only works on the RGG7.

If you look at some of the clothing here,

whoop, doesn't quite identify the clothing,

but it asks if I like the clothing.

I guess it's trying to build a preference profile for me.

Let's try this one.

Whoop, there it goes, it pulled up shopping results

from Macy's, from QVC.

So it understands what this item of clothing is

and it then prompts you to buy it online.

Now as you scan Google Lens over other objects,

it'll slowly start to recognize everything else

that you pan it over.

So we have a piece of art right here,

that is not correct,

hold on.

Looking for results.

There we go.

So it went from the album,

but now it knows this is a painting by Pablo Picasso.

Right here it sees a photo.

And it knows that was a Norwegian Lundehund.

I don't think I pronounced that right,

but it is a dog breed and Google identified it.

So Google Lens isn't just for photos and objects.

You can do a lot with text now,

that includes text inside the book jacket of a book,

it includes text on menus at restaurants.

You can point the camera at a whole list of food items

and you can pull up images of those food items.

You can pull up YouTube videos of how to make them.

You can even translate those food items if they're

in another language into English or into Spanish

or into any other language that you want

that Google Translate supports.

Now if you're looking at a book,

for instance, like the book Swing Time by Zadie Smith,

you can look at huge passages of text,

you can even grab that text using Google Lens

and you can pull it out as if you had just copied

and pasted it from a document.

From there you can translate that text into another language

you can even then do Google searches on it.

Google Lens essentially takes text

from anywhere out in the world,

street signs, restaurant menus, even books

and it makes that text searchable.

Now the underlying technology behind Google Lens,

it isn't just for basically looking through a smart phone

viewfinder and looking at products or

trying to translate text.

What powers Google Lens is,

a lot of the foundational AI work that lets Google

do AR experiences.

So for instance, because Google's software

and the phones that power that software

can understand and see the world,

you can create whole virtual 3D images.

For instance, you can have paintings come to life

right out in front of you and you can walk around,

you can even see the reflections of objects behind you

in those 3D images,

if developers design them in the right way

and know what environment you're standing in.

That's pretty wild.

You can also point your camera lens at a podium

and have an entire 3D image come to life in front of you,

grow up into the sky

and encompass the entire vertical area around you.

Now these Google Lens features

are all coming later this month

and as Google said on stage at the IO keynote,

they're coming to more than just pixel devices

and within the Assistant.

You'll also be able to access them in IOS

from within the Assistant itself.

But you have to use the Assistant, you won't be able

to access it from the Iphone's camera, of course.

How You Can Increase Your Salary as a Software Developer - Duration: 8:22.

Hey, this is the Daily Overpass, my name is Eric and I make apps!

Now today, I wanna talk about how you can increase your salary as a software developer!

Alright!

So today I'm coming to you from Green Park in Reading.

It's this big industrial business park.

I was here for a seminar which just let out a little while ago and I thought I'd take

a little walk around, and this place is nice!

One day, you see something like this and you think one day I want Overpass to be at an

office complex like this because there's a big lake in the middle, all these big glass

buildings, there's walkways here, you see a bunch of young technology people with their

day badges on walking around.

Kind of like when you see the Google complex and everything like that, and it's really

nice!

In fact, we are moving to a new office in Wantage here soon, just yesterday looking

at some new offices, and we will be moving within the next month, something a bit nicer

now that we're getting some employees and stuff, try to grow a little bit!

Anyway I wanted to start off today by thanking everyone for the live stream last week.

I did my first live stream of Thursday night and I was really nervous, I wasn't sure if

I was gonna have enough stuff to talk about.

I appreciate everybody who showed up and asked questions and everything, and we're gonna

do it again this Friday at 8 pm UK time, which I think is noon on the pacific coast in California,

so if it's something you're interested in, attending the next live stream, it would be

really great to have you there, and if you have any questions that you wanna ask, we

can put it to the group so it's not just me, because I'm not an expert on anything.

But we can put it to the group and if you want us to look at your Google Play page,

or anything like that, that might be kind of fun too!

But, if you're brave enough for everyone to see it and give a bit of constructive criticism,

but it's a really good group!

Anyway, that's there.

And also I wanna say thanks everyone for liking and subscribing and sharing the content here

on the channel - I'm supposed to say that at the beginning!

So, today I wanna talk about developer salaries!

I was talking to a friend....

Eeek, I am so sorry for this awkward transition, I filmed that entire video out at Green Park,

it was beautiful scenery, people were walking by, everything, and the microphone failed

halfway through it, so I got a lot of footage of me just "mu mu mu", like an idiot with

no audio.

Sorry about that sorry for this awkward transition.

So what I was telling you about was a couple of days ago I was contacted by a friend of

mine that I used to work with when I worked at an investment bank as a contractor.

Se this must have been about twelve, thirteen, fourteen years ago, and it was one of my first

contracts, my rate kept going up and up and I was making about 375 pounds a day working

at this investment bank, which I thought was really good, and it is really good!

So as a developer, back then it was a lot of ASP stuff, it wasn't even ASP.net, it was

a lot of Vb, you know, com components, stuff like that.

And there was a guy who came in as a consultant to work on this one project, on this one trading

system that we worked on together.

So it was like an older legacy system and I was writing the new glue that connected

other systems, kind of the piping, and everything like that.

And we talked a lot at lunch and he just knew this one technology which is an older technology,

unic space, and we talked and I kept trying to tell him he should learn ASP or ASP.net

because there's more job opportunities in that language that I have.

And I was very much like "you spend some much time looking for work, I would say you should

learn this technology because there's lots of jobs!

I'm thinking you should do the thing where there's lots of jobs for.

And then one day I found out how much he was being paid, like we were just having a conversation,

I was making 375 a day and he was making over a thousand pounds a day!

I couldn't believe it!

I think he was making three times more than me, it was more than a thousand pounds a day.

And it turns out, because there were not a lot of people who could do what he could do

- the market was full of ASP developers, was full of PHP developers, full of all these

developers, everyone who goes looking for a job, you look for the one with the most

opportunities, but that meant that the supply was bigger than the demand, so that they could

lower down the rate.

So this guy was making loads because there was only a handful of people in the world

who could do what he did!

Then I started thinking about this, thinking "wow, I didn't think I was actually on a low

rate, so I started asking around.

There was another team that were mostly Java developers, Java and some older technology,

I can't remember what it was, but they used some older technologies and everything like

that and I started asking them and they were making more too because it was hard to find

the skills that they had, even though the skills they had used to be mainstream, but

they were older technologies.

It wasn't Java - it was...I can't remember what it was but it was an old technology!

And these guys, they knew it so they were able to charge more!

And it made me start thinking about the distribution curve.

So I don't know if you've ever seen the distribution curve, where its like the bell curve where

you've got the early adopters, the early majority, the late majority and the laggard that come

up behind.

It made me start thinking about technology and being able to raise your rate as a developer!

So it seems to me, if you were in the early majority and you have a skill that's not very

widely used yet, you might not find a lot of jobs in that.

So right now maybe flutter, flutter might be a good one now.

So if you were just becoming a developer and you went to go learn flutter, you might have

a hard time finding a job.

But, you'd be able to charge a lot more because there's fewer people in that market.

As soon as it gets to the early majority, right now the early majority in my opinion

is react native , ionic, native - all that kind of stuff!

And then you've got the late majority, which is definitely PHP, I could throw a stick out

the window and hit a PHP developer!

There are so many out there, so their rates are much lower.

We've got PHP, c sharp, that kind of stuff.

Then you've got the late majority which is like the laggers, which is like pearl and

all this ASP, classic ASP, VB6, that kind of stuff.

Those people could probably charge a lot more because it's hard to find those developers

with those skills to look at the old stuff.

SO,my advice always to new developers is to look at the center section for the job that

you're gonna go for.

Because you don't wanna learn a technology which you can't find a job in, but at same

time focus on the early majority, because that's...if you can learn those technologies

while you learn the other thing, while you're learning react native, also learn something

that's cutting edge.

And I say flutter but there are probably things that are more cutting edge than that now!

There's always machine learning and AI and all the other cool stuff that's coming out.

But if you were to lean that early majority stuff right now, eventually it might become

the majority and then the reins will go down, there's more people flooding into the market,

but if you hold onto those skills as you get older, you might be able o charge more again

at the late majority.

So anyway, those are just my opinions after talking to him it was kind of funny, it was

funny, he was doing ok.

I was worried about him thinking if you can't find any jobs, you should learn ASP, and he

had no problems!

So anyway, sorry about the audio problems today.

That;s it for today, I'll talk to you tomorrow"

N. Korea denuclearization issue brings together S. Korea, Japan and China - Duration: 2:15.

So why has it been over two and a half years since the three nations held a trilateral

summit of this kind?

Various disputes between the countries caused them to drift further apart, and now, North

Korea's denuclearization brought the parties back to the discussion table.

Kwon Jang-ho explains further.

The leaders of South Korea, Japan and China seem to be on the same page towards North

Korea.

In the first trilateral meeting of this kind since 2015, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo

Abe and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang expressed their support for the Inter-Korean Summit

and the Panmunjom declaration,... and pledged to continue cooperation with Seoul on the

denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Seoul and Beijing had been reluctant to hold such a summit in recent years because of territorial

disputes with Tokyo, but recent developments with North Korea seem to have brought the

three nations together, as explained by Professor Song Se-ryun speaking to Arirang News on Wednesday.

"We have a much larger issue of the peace treaty and the peace process on the Korean

peninsula.

All those disputes and tit-for-tats have been subsumed under that big agenda.

So I hope that the relationship that gets better and better will probably look for some

ways for resolving some of the issues that we have been struggling with."

Professor Song also stressed that there was a need for the three key regional players

to at least show signs of a united front to show support for the U.S. summit with North

Korea, which is set to be the real litmus test of whether Kim Jong-un is serious about

giving up the regime's nuclear weapons.

"It was a necessary and timely dialogue among the key players, sort of lining the ducks

in a row before the big talk between North Korea and the United States.

Necessary messages were aired, support for the Panmunjom, and complete denuclearization

support..."

Differences in the details of the how to deal with North Korea remain,... as do individual

bilateral tensions,... but for now, the possibility of peace and stability in the region has brought

the leaders together in the same room, and they left with a promise to meet more regularly.

Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing welcome Panmunjom Declaration, pledge cooperation - Duration: 2:53.

President Moon Jae-in became the first sitting South Korean leader to visit Japan in over

half a decade today.

Meeting with his counterpart in the host country and the Chinese premier, it was an extra-busy

day for the liberal leader, who got a lot done during the sit-downs.

Hwang Hojun in Tokyo starts us off with the long overdue three way meeting.

Diplomacy was the name of the game.

Resuming the three-way talks for the first time since 2015,...

President Moon, Japanese Prime Minister Abe, and Chinese Premier Li said they throughly

discussed how their countries can work together to deal with the North Korea issue while seeking

the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of lasting

peace in the region.

They welcomed the outcome of the recent inter-Korean summit and even adopted a special statement

welcoming the Panmunjom Declaration.

In that statement, they also expressed hope for the success of the upcoming Pyongyang-Washington

summit… and pledged joint efforts for peace and stability in Northeast Asia.

Of course, the focal point of each leader reflected a slightly different approach.

President Moon voiced the importance of holding the trilateral summit on a regular basis.

"I wish and I also promise that the three countries will continue their close communication

and cooperation on the process of establishing lasting peace in the region."

The Japanese prime minister stressed that the international sanctions on North Korea

need to be adhered to... to get the regime to take concrete action… such as resolving

the decades-long issue of its abductions of Japanese citizens.

"It is the three countries' common stance to completely fulfill the UN Security Council's

resolutions on North Korea issues."

China wanted to make sure that it would still be able to exert influence on North Korea-related

affairs.

"China hopes for the restoration of dialogue and for a political resolution of the Korean

Peninsula issue by making the most of this opportunity.

To this end, China will continue to play a constructive role."

Economic cooperation between the three countries was also mentioned.

The leaders noted that their combined GDP accounts for around 20 percent of the global

economy and agreed that together they can accomplish anything.

They also attended a business summit, encouraging business leaders from all three countries

to do more together.

President Moon stressed the need to jointly tackle trade protectionism.

And he called for joint efforts to conclude negotiations on the Regional Comprehensive

Economic Partnership, or RCEP,... a regional free-trade pact involving South Korea, Japan

and China as well as ASEAN nations.

The recent inter-Korean summit and the Panmunjom Declaration were apparently more than sufficient

reasons to end the trilateral talks' 2-and-a-half year hiatus.

And now with the emergence of North Korea on the global stage,… three-way cooperation

between Seoul, Tokyo, and Beijing has become critical to navigating the region's changing

diplomatic landscape.

Make Better Decisions: Measure Your Site's Data (& Ask The Right Questions) | The Peep Show - Duration: 2:21.

- Here's the most common problem I see with websites.

(motivating rock music)

The problem is that stuff is not being measured.

So you have all this stuff on your website.

You have something on your home page

and maybe you're on e-commerce stuff

so you have a category page, product page,

and you're thinking, hey what should I change

about my website to make people buy more of my stuff?

Well sure, but let's see what people are doing

or not doing on your website to begin with.

We'll look at your analytics data and there's nothing there

because no measurement has been set up.

Are they scrolling down, how far down the page,

which elements are they seeing or not seeing.

If it's on the category page, you have all these filters.

They can filter by price, they can filter by color,

size, all these things.

They can change the sort order of the products.

How many people are using it and if they are using it,

what is the impact on their purchasing behavior?

So if you don't measure

every single thing that users can do

on your website, you're in the dark.

You're blind and stupid in a situation

where you don't need to be blind nor stupid.

You can be very educated about things.

Sometimes I see business owners or marketers worry

about an area of their website that nobody ever goes to.

Like 0.2%.

You don't need to just come up with ideas and wonder about,

you can look at the data and see ah, if people interact

with these things they are far more likely to convert.

Or maybe people are interacting with your filters,

they sort by price,

they want brown shoes in size 11

and you see oh, if people use combination

of these three filters, their conversion rate goes way up.

Oh now, now you want to optimize to get more people

to use those three filters.

You want to make them more prominent.

And maybe some filters that people are using have 0 impact

of the purchasing behavior.

So you want to either get rid of them,

or minimize them, change the order.

So basically what I'm saying is that if you have data

on what people are doing and not doing

that will solve half your problems

'cuz you'll actually know what might have an impact.

(motivating rock music)

LEADS Scholar Spotlight: Predictive Policing Algorithms - Duration: 1:50.

{Music}

SHON BARNES: Predictive policing algorithms is just simply taking data and putting into a system

that will tell us when and where crime is going to be. The purpose behind algorithms are to better assist

police managers and deployment of officers. So we want to be where we need to be

in order to prevent crime. It's a little different from "hot spot" policing, whereas the data tells you

where crime is happening now. Predictive policing algorithms give police mangers

an opportunity to determine where crime will be.

So what we did was we did a predictive policing quasi-experiment based on the way our police department

was structured so that we had one group of officers applying the treatment which

was the predictive policing algorithms. We had officers go to where crime was supposed to be.

And then we had our other officers doing the normal routine—"hot spot" policing, answering calls for service,

and that type of thing—and we were able to show a greater reduction in the areas where

we looked at predictive policing algorithms versus the areas we did not.

We also looked at how many people were on the street. Turns out those that did the predictive policing

algorithms went out with less officers, were more busy, yet they had a greater reduction on crime

than those offers who didn't. So NIJ was very instrumental in helping me understand my data,

helping me ask the right questions. The LEADS Scholarship Program is great for me because it's not

about teaching you what the answers are but teaching you how to ask and

write the right questions in order to solve a problem.
